Get to Know Harrison Schailey, Chef/Owner, Harrison’s Wine Grill and Catering How long have you been a Happy Valley resident? We moved back to State College in 1996. I was a Penn Stater and worked for Mike Desmond (of Hotel State College) back in the 80s.
Please give us some background on Harrison’s Wine Grill and Catering. Along with my wife, Kit Henshaw, I’ve owned and operated Harrison’s Wine Grill and Harrison’s Catering since it opened as Harrison’s Chef-Prepared Foods in 2000. I am a native of the Levittown, PA and originally came to State College to wrestle for Penn State. I got my start in restaurants and management in State College with well-known local restaurateur, Mike Desmond at Great America, now known as Hi-way Pizza North where I met Kit, a State College native. We lived and worked together all over the country and along the way Kit acquired an MBA from the University of Virginia, Darden Graduate School of Business. We had our first child, a son named Cole, in 1994. Like many State College natives and Penn State alumni starting a family, we decided to move back to State College and had another son, Mac, in 1996. In 2000, we opened Harrison’s Chef-Prepared Foods on North Atherton Street, offering quality foods for carry-out, eat-in and catering. As this business grew and the lease ran out, Harrison’s
grew into a full-service restaurant by relocating to the restaurant space located within the Hilton Garden Inn, where we’re located now. This added breakfast, banquets and full bar service and allowed a more extensive and interesting dinner menu influenced by the seasonal-regional cuisine of California wine country. Now known as Harrison’s Wine Grill and Catering, our growing business is upscale yet casual, offering contemporary American cuisine with a seasonal/regional focus for lunch, dinner, catering and carry-out and providing the breakfast and banquet-fare for the Hilton Garden Inn.

HV: What is unique about being a business owner in Happy Valley? We enjoy getting to know all the other business owners in the area. It’s a nice business community where everyone is very supportive.
HV: Your personal favorite thing about Happy Valley? It’s a small town with big city attractions, like football, baseball, concerts and, of course, dining. And there is easy access to outdoor recreation and activities. We enjoy visiting all our great parks like Whipple Dam, Stone Valley, Collier Lake, and, especially Spring Creek Park.
HV: Something you’d recommend all visitors do while they’re here? Of course we hope you’ll come see us at Harrison’s and I’d also suggest taking advantage of all the offerings at Penn State, like the Palmer Museum of Art, the many great concerts and shows at Eisenhower Auditorium, and my personal favorite, Nittany Lion football.

Buy Fresh, Buy Local Campaign Promotes Happy Valley’s Abundance of Locally Grown Food with Centre County’s Local Foods Week August 6-11 Ever wonder how far your food travels before reaching your plate? According to a study conducted by the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture, food travels an average of 1,500 miles before it’s consumed! Finding sources for fresh, local food is a great way to eat healthier, tastier meals while keeping money in our local economy. Fortunately, Centre County has an abundance of farmers, restaurants, and markets that make the search for good food easy. The Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture (PASA) is the driving force behind the Buy Fresh, Buy Local campaign. PASA is a nonprofit organization working to improve the economic and social prosperity of Pennsylvania food and agriculture. They work with the farmers that grow our food, the consumers that eat the food, and those concerned with the ecological well being of our environment and natural resources. PASA has planned Centre County’s Local Foods Week from August 6 through 11 to celebrate Centre County’s abundance of local foods. Special events at the Millheim, Boalsburg, Bellefonte, and State College Farmers’ Markets will spice up your shopping experience. The week culminates on August 11 with a family-friendly farm tour highlighting over a dozen Centre County farms. It’s a fun, unique way to spend a Saturday. Also, be on the lookout for area restaurants participating in the Buy Fresh, Buy Local festivities—the food doesn’t get any better than this! You can enjoy Happy Valley-grown products through the summer and fall at one of four Farmer’s Markets in State College, Bellefonte, Boalsburg and Millheim. Local farms and bakeries, including Way Fruit Farm, Tait Farm, Sunrise Bakery and many, many more, participate, selling delicious seasonal produce, fresh-baked breads, cookies and pies, and fresh meat, fish, cheese and yogurt. PASA is a growing member-based organization offering over 30 farm-based educational events throughout the growing season. In February, PASA hosts the annual Farming for the Future conference, the largest sustainable agriculture conference on the east coast.

A Free Kid Series, Award-Winning Films, and Excellent Concerts Are Highlights of Summer at The State Theatre Executive Director Mike Negra Shares the Excitement With HappyValley.com What upcoming events are you most excited about? Mavis Staples on September 7th, the Friday before the Notre Dame vs. Penn State football game, is very high on my list. Her new album, produced by Ry Cooder, might just be the album of the year. Also, we have the Blind Boys of Alabama coming on December 2nd for a Christmas show that should not be missed.
What is the State Theatre offering during Penn State football weekends? We will program concerts on Friday nights and most likely movies on Sundays. Home football Saturdays create challenges for us due to the shear mass of people in town who are almost all here for one thing: Penn State football. We’ve come up with a unique way to meet this challenge: we’ll rent the theatre to private groups on home football Saturdays. They can watch the game on our 31-foot screen.
Can you share a little bit about the Free Kid’s Series that will be held throughout the summer? This idea came through Susan Shedd, our Operations Manager, and I think it’s a great one. The State, in cooperation with Schlow Library’s summer reading program, will offer eight films derived from classic children’s books. The READ IT, WATCH IT & WIN series is free to everyone, including parents. If a child reads two or more books and watches the corresponding movie, they become eligible for a prize pack after the entire series is over. There are extra incentives for reading and watching four, or even all eight, books and movies. In addition, we have partnered with a different charity each week to set up an informational booth in our lobby to distribute literature and request donations. This will give each charity great exposure to pass along their message and connect with our customers. We are also requesting that customers who are seeing the free films consider bringing in a canned good for the State College Food Bank. We thought incorporating a charity would be a great life lesson for the kids and help them discover the many ways they can give back to their own community.

The Wegman’s movie of the month series has several interesting films on your schedule for the next few months. What are the highlights? There are some great older movies booked for the rest of the year at the State. Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Beetle Juice and To Kill a Mockingbird are all fantastic movies and cross generational lines. I am looking forward to Veteran’s Day on November 11th for a special screening of The Best Years of our Lives. This picture won nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, and Director. It tells a tale of three WWII vets coming home after the war and their difficult readjustment to everyday life in America in 1946. It’s as powerful today as it was then.

It stars Glen Hansard (from the Commitments) and Marketa Irglova. Look for it on our schedule in late July or early August and don’t miss it!
What’s up at the State for Arts Festival weekend? We’re chock full of exciting events. On Children’s Day, we are screening The Secret of NIMH at noon, 2:30 and 4:30. That evening we are showing the classic 1962 film Mafioso at 7:00 and 9:30 pm, for an adult treat. On Thursday, we will have tours of the State Theatre throughout the day, providing a cool alternative to the sunny sidewalks and educating the public about our facility. Geist, a multi-talented comedic performer, will provide the Thursday evening entertainment at 3:30 pm and 7:30 pm. Superstar singer and songwriter Don McLean, best known for his hits American Pie and Vincent, will take the stage at 8:30 pm on Friday. His performance is sure to be one not to miss! The PA Dance Theatre will perform Jala, which features new works by Artistic Director André Koslowski and internationally acclaimed choreographer Mark Taylor, on Saturday at 1:00 pm. Come out to party on Saturday evening at 8:30 pm with Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes. We finish off the Arts Festival on Sunday with two showings of the acclaimed film, Brand upon the Brain! at 4:00 and 7:00 pm.
