What can I say that our Summer issue does not say far better than I ever could? Just thinking about Summer in Happy Valley is enough to elicit the emotion that our mission is all about. I guess to some people the Outer Banks brings a similar soothing joy this time of year. Not for me, as the Outer Banks means 10 hours of driving (twice!), getting sunburned and spending too much money. You may be rolling your eyes or you may be nodding in agreement. When it comes to loving Happy Valley, you cannot fake the funk! I hope you see in each and every article, and on our website, our authentic love for Happy Valley. We are here to say, simply, this is the

Gingerbread Man Want to grab a beer in a casual outdoor atmosphere? Gingerbread Man has a small outdoor seating area, covered in case of rain. When you’re having a beer‑and‑pizza day, this may be your destination, and there’s very convenient parking just across the street. As Penn State alumni know, the bar boasts a rich history dating back to the 1930’s, snippets of which can be found within its walls. Café 210 West Another Penn State favorite, the white tables, red plastic chairs and green awning hold fond memories for alumni. Café 210’s large College Avenue patio is the perfect location to see and be seen. The restaurant also features a double‑decker patio behind the restaurant. The Cafe has a range of food items, so order a beer and enjoy a sandwich, wrap, salad or burger. Otto’s Talk about luck, a small American town with beautiful mountains and a great local brewery—Germany has nothing on Happy Valley Otto’s brews their own beer, with at least 12 varieties on tap. The outdoor seating area has seven large tables. If you want a light drink on a hot day, try the Spruce Creek Lager or the Apricot Wheat. Or if you prefer to get in touch with your inner German, order the Weizenbach with a reuben sandwich. Mad Mex If you want great Mexican food in State College, this is the place to be. Mad Mex has a large outdoor seating area, half of which is under a large tent. The Deli The Deli goes for diversity in their menu and their outdoor seating options. In back they have seating on Calder Way, where the patio is surrounded by a cool twisted iron railing; in front you can sit on Hiester Street and admire the mural of State College myth and legend across the street. If you’re looking for a sylvan setting for martinis or you just want to sit under the trees with a beer, the American Ale House in Toftrees is well worth the short drive from downtown. They have a large outdoor seating area, literally under the trees that grow up in the middle. The Ale House has at least 15 beers on draft, plus a wine list and a full bar. On a pleasant summer evenings, try one of their large salads with a glass of chardonnay, or if you’re in a less vegetarian mood, go for the Cuban sandwich with a Magic Hat #9 beer. A Blanket and a Basket Guide to the Best Places to Picnic By Rita Lumpkins Nothing says summer like a picnic. So pack a basket and head out to one of Happy Valley’s many parks. Here’s a few we recommend.
Municipal Parks Offer Picnic Pavilions and Fun for Kids
The Centre Region Parks and Recreation’s Web site www.crpr.org lists municipal parks that have picnic tables and picnic pavilions that are able to be reserved. Unreserved pavilions are available on a first come, first served basis. For the kids, you can even rent a “Sports Pack Duffle Bag” full of bats and balls and other picnic fun. The CRPR sponsors special events including a Bike‑In Movie Series, showing Pee Wee’s Big Adventure at Sunset Park on July 18 at 8:30 PM. Bring blankets or chairs and snacks. These events are free, but small donations are appreciated.
State Parks Add Outdoor Fun to Any Picnic
Several of Pennsylvania’s best parks are within easy driving distance of State College and afford perfect picnicking plus opportunities for outdoor fun like swimming, boating, fishing and hiking. You can reserve picnic pavilions, or select an unreserved pavilion where available. For driving directions, visit www.dncrstate.com. We recommend: Whipple Dam, 12 miles south of State College on Rt. 26, features a sparkling lake and sandy beach offset by the beautiful greenery of the surrounding forest. Greenwood Furnace, about 25 minutes southeast of State College on Rt. 305, offers campsites with full amenities, the cool waters of Greenwood Lake for swimming, and trails perfect for dayhiking. Bald Eagle, past Milesburg on Rt. 150, is a large park surrounding the Foster Joseph Sayers Reservoir, which offers great fishing opportunities, unlimited horsepower boating and a sandy beach for swimming. In addition to the campground, primitive campsites are also available within hiking distance of the lake. Stone Valley and Shaver’s Creek, Penn State’s Stone Valley Recreation Area (108 Business Services Building, University Park; 814‑863‑1164; www.shaverscreek.org) has picnic tables and also rents pavilions and charcoal grills. Facilities that accommodate large groups are also available for rent. Located within Stone Valley, Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center (3400 Discovery Rd., Petersburg; 814‑863‑2000; www.outreach.psu.edu) has two picnic areas available on a first come first serve basis.
Bear Meadows Rd., Boalsburg; www.tusseymountain.com). The owners of Brookmere Winery & Vineyard Inn (5369 S. R. 655, Belleville; 717‑935‑5380) encourage visitors to stroll their grounds and bring a picnic to enjoy with a bottle of chilled Brookmere wine.
Like to Picnic but Don’t Like to Pack?
Let these local establishments do the work for you. All you have to do is show up and eat! The Fraser Street Deli features sandwiches named after historical local celebrities, including the Nittany Lion, Joe Paterno, James Beaver and Graham Spanier. (109 S. Central PA 4th Fest: An All‑American Celebration Volunteers Show the True Spirit of Happy Valley By Bev Molnar Hands down, Happy Valley offers one of the biggest and best 4th of July celebrations in the country. 4th Fest is an all‑day event featuring fun activities, food and a spectacular fireworks display, consistently rated one of the best in the country. Executive Director Bernie Kiesling told us this year 4th Fest includes the same fun as previous years plus some new activities to enjoy.
Here are some highlights to help you navigate your day: 9 a.m. – The Firecracker 4K Race is family friendly and fun for both runners and walkers. Begins and Beaver Stadium and continues through Penn State campus. 1 p.m. – State College Spikes vs. the Vermont Lake Monsters at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park ($) 4 p.m. – BJC Family Playground inside the Bryce Jordan Center Arena offers a nice break from hot temperatures and the sun. ($) 4, 5:30 and 6:45 p.m. – Pyrotechnics demonstrations at the Pyro Demo Tent by 4th Fest volunteers. A behind‑the‑scenes look what it takes to put on one of the best fireworks displays in the country! 4‑6 p.m. – Free Fantastic Frankfurters at Lot 44! 4‑7:30 p.m. – Nittany Line Hobbies and Toys brings back the popular Remote Control Car Races in the BJC Founders Lot. Sign up at the Information Booth. 4‑10:15 p.m. – Live Entertainment at various locations throughout the grounds.
6 p.m. – The line forms in Lot 44 at 5:30 PM to get a slice of the 14‑foot Flag Cake! 6‑8 p.m. – Sky’s the Limit Ballooning offers tethered hot air balloon rides. ($) 9:20 p.m. – Fireworks begin! As always, the pyrotechnics team choreographs the entire show to music (ranging from patriotic to popular), played on 93.7 FM The Bus. A street dance follows the fireworks, providing the perfect excuse to continue partying and a perfect way to avoid the post‑fireworks traffic jam. Besides the fun and fireworks, what makes the Central PA 4th Fest celebration so special is that it is planned and executed entirely by volunteers. It’s the largest volunteer‑run Fourth of July celebration in the country, according to Jeff Nucciarone, vice president of support and operations and a member of the board of directors. “An event this size produced by paid professionals would cost close to a quarter of a million dollars,” Nucciarone says. His wife, Cindy, an advisory board member, agrees that volunteerism is the “true spirit” of 4th Fest.
VIP Passes In fact, volunteering is a great way to score a coveted VIP Pass for free. The VIP Pass allows you to experience the fireworks from a special reserved viewing area. VIP Pass holders get an up‑close view of the special large ground‑based effects, which have been updated for 2008. VIP parking passes are also available. VIP viewing and parking passes can be purchased at the Jordan Center ticket office right up to the day of the event.

Water, Water Everywhere Boating Opportunities Range from Afternoon Paddling to Overnight Stays It has often been said (by our intern Annalynne) that there is only one way to improve Happy Valley: move it to the beach. But since Mount Nittany isn’t going anywhere, the next best thing is to enjoy fun on the water right here on our area’s lakes and streams. Here, our trusted intern details the best options available for boating, including rental prices. True, surfing is out, but Annalynne says you can still have nearly all the fun of beach going without the drive to the Jersey Shore (that’s the one in New Jersey, not the one a few exits over on I‑80).
houseboat for an entirely unique lodging experience. Get a whole group together with a large boat for 10 people or have a quiet week with just a few close friends. The houseboats include bedrooms, bathrooms, full‑size kitchen, grill, sundeck and sliding boards. Let me tell you, these houseboats are equipped for fun. You can rent a houseboat for as little as a $1,000 or as much as $3,600. Also check out The Proud Mary Tour boat, with “turn of the century hospitality and breathtaking vistas.” If you don’t rent your own boat, this is a must see.

You can find similar boating options on a slightly smaller scale 23 miles from State College at Bald Eagle State Park (149 Main Park Rd., Howard; 814‑625‑2775). You can rent several different kinds of boats as well as waterskiing equipment. Waterskiing is exciting for adults and kids, and can also provide some good laughs for those who’ve never done it. If excitement isn’t your thing, consider renting a pontoon boat with tubing gear. Great fun for families. Pontoon boats range from $60‑$75 per hour. If you’re into manual labor, canoes and kayaks are $10, and paddle boats are $12.
Great Lakes State College is only 28 miles from the largest man made reservoir in Pennsylvania. At Lake Raystown, you can bring your own boat or use one of the many places available for rentals, from pontoon and fishing boats to canoes and paddleboats. Most boats are available year round, so you can appreciate the changing seasons from many vantage points on the lake. Pontoon boats can be rented from the Lake Raystown Resort for anywhere between $300 and $450 during the daytime. In the evening, you can watch the sunset from your boat at a reduced rate between $150 and $250. These rentals include a tube or water skis, harness and ski jacket. Fishing boats and canoes can be rented per hour for $30 or $10, respectively. Similar prices can be found at Seven Points Marina (RD 1, Raystown Lake; Hesston; 814‑658‑3074; www.raystown.org). Pontoon boats are $125 an hour and $400 per day. You can also rent a motorized fishing boat for $45 per hour and $100 per day. It’s worth noting that Seven Points Marina does not increase prices on weekends and holidays. For a long weekend or a weeklong adventure, consider renting a
Small Lakes, Big Fun For something different, you can rent an entire fleet of Paddle Boats at Tussey Mountain (301 Bear Meadows Rd., Boalsburg; 814‑466‑6266; www.tusseymountain.com) just 11 miles outside of State College. This is a cool activity for a reunion or birthday party. Boats can be rented for $75 an hour and $40 for every hour after that. In ten short minutes you can be at Penn State student‑favorite Whipple Dam (Huntingdon; 814‑667‑1800). This relaxing area is great for canoeing, sailing and motor boating. You can rent canoes, paddleboats and rowboats for only $5 for a half hour and $7 for an hour. Great Saturday fun for families, groups of friends, or couples. There’s a little beach and a snack bar, and changing rooms and bathrooms are available throughout the park. If you are a Happy Valley native and own your own boat, or are a visitor towing yours in, check out Colyer Lake. Located five miles east of State College, Colyer Lake is a habitat for largemouth bass, bluegill, black crappie, chain pickerel, and pumpkinseed. In other words, the fishing is primo. It’s a nice relaxing spot even if you’re not into the fish. Less than a mile from State College, sailing lessons and boat rentals are available at Stone Valley Recreation Area (Business Office: 814‑863‑0762). The beautiful area is run by Penn State and offers discounts to students and groups for boat rentals. However, Stone Valley is currently on a hiatus while Lake Perez is repaired. Who needs long drives, high gas prices and expensive accommodations when you can have the beach experience right here? Happy Valley is a great place to try on your sea legs!

Owner of The Bicycle Shop Enjoys Life in Mecca for Mountain Biking Happy Valley Offers Internationally Recognized Trails By Annalynne Kenawell Think football is the only sport in Happy Valley? Think again! Our region is home to some of the best biking trails in the United States. The International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA) has made Happy Valley’s own Rothrock State Forest into the site of one of its epic trails stating: “While Joe Paterno’s Nittany Lions rule State College, there is more to this town than pigskin and pilsner, namely, mountain biking.” The R3, (Roth Rock Ride) a favorite of mountain biking enthusiasts
everywhere was described as: “Thirty‑two miles of single‑track and fire roads. Four‑thousand six‑hundred feet of climbing. More rocks than a Flintstones movie or a paperweight warehouse” in IMBA Trail News. The IMBA Web site lists State College’s The Bicycle Shop as a place for visitors to check out after riding the R3. The little shop, located on the corner of Barnard Street and College Avenue, has been around for 62 years. It has seen more than five owners, including the current owner Erik Scott. Scott says he doesn’t really see himself as someone selling bikes so much as someone selling a lifestyle. If asked at age 21 if he would be the proud owner of a bicycle shop, he would have laughed. A Penn State graduate, he worked for The Athletic Clubs in State College for 12 years. He then founded B&E cycles, a smaller bike shop, and when The Bicycle Shop came up for sale he bought it and merged the two. Considering its international recognition, Scott finds State College to be a Mecca for mountain biking. If you’ve never ridden here, he has plenty of maps and books on trails in and around Centre County. Information on the Rothrock State Forest trails are also available. Of course, some of Scott’s favorite trails aren’t on the maps, they’re the no‑name trails, somewhere in the game lands. Summer in Happy Valley Shines at Arts Fest 2008 Festival Promises to Please By David Hutto Theodore Dreiser once wrote that art is the stored honey of the human soul. From July 9-13, that honey will flow through downtown State College, to be enjoyed by more than 125,000 visitors at the 43rd Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts. As always, the rich diversity of Arts Fest will include extensive exhibits of fine arts, musical performances, activities for children, and a wide variety of food choices. During festival days, downtown State College comes to life—crowds turn the streets into flowing streams of people, from art enthusiasts seeking unique new purchases to little kids with painted faces and dripping ice cream cones. Allen Street is surprisingly transformed with a landscape installation and performance stage.
Whether you’re a veteran Arts Fest‑er or making your first visit, Here are some key things to know to make the most of your Arts Fest experience: • Wednesday, July 9, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. is Children’s Day at the festival featuring the Children and Youth Sidewalk Sale. Kids show off and sell their own artwork. There are also performances both by and for young people, along with craft workshops and demonstrations, and a Grand Procession through the Festival. It’s a great tradition to kick off the fun.
• This year Children’s Day will include the National Marionette Theatre presenting Peter and the Wolf at the Schwab Auditorium, at 11:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
• The sidewalk sale of arts and crafts will be open Thursday to Saturday from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m., and on Sunday from noon until 5.
Even the streets and sidewalks get into the act at Arts Fest. • Most events are free, but entrance into some performances requires a button, which is clearly a bargain at only $7. Buttons can be purchased from many local businesses, including the State Theatre, the Corner Room, the Days Inn, the Student Bookstore, and others.
• For Penn State Alumni, Arts Festival is a special time. Penn State plans Arts Festival Alumni Reunion Weekend, featuring special events and the opportunity to stay on campus. Rooms in West Halls range from $30‑47 per person and include a full breakfast in the dining commons. More than 340 artists are scheduled to take part, selected by a jury from 900 original submissions. Artists come from State College, Pennsylvania, throughout and overall from 35 states, the District of Columbia, and Canada. This is an especially competitive show for artists to enter into, which means the quality of artwork is high. Local artist Sandi Garris, who has turned quilt‑making into a fine art with striking visual combinations, says that this is “one of the more encompassing” shows she attends, and that the quality of art is always good. Sandi has been in Arts Fest more than 20 times, and for an artist who makes her living from festivals, she considers this “one of the better shows of the year.” The enthusiasm of the crowd is a draw for out‑of town artists, potters Doug Johnson and his wife Donna Gilbert, coming from Gainesville, Georgia. This will be the third time at the festival for Doug and Donna, who feel strongly that Arts Fest is worth the long trip to get here. Doug says, “It’s a very upbeat festive feel, and that comes in large part from the audience. People who went to Penn State seem to be very enthusiastic about their school and the festival.”
Art for Your Ears
The sidewalk sale may be the most visible part of the Arts Festival, but there’s more. Musical performances take place in five venues: the Festival Shell, Memorial Field, Allen Street Stage, Schwab Auditorium, and The State Theatre. At these locations over the course of the festival there will be 53 different performances, including folk, rock, Celtic, blues, reggae, swing, and gypsy. While many of the performances are free, don’t forget that some require a button. One musical highlight is Shelby Lynne’s performance on July 12 at 8 p.m. at the State Theatre.
Other Unique Offerings
Believe it or not, there’s still more. In the Schwab Auditorium, audiences can enjoy silent films by Charlie Chaplin, Harold Lloyd, and Buster Keaton, to the musical accompaniment of the Paragon Ragtime Orchestra. Another unusual offering will be tango performances at the Penn State Downtown Theatre Center. For three days, audiences can enjoy the dance and music of Tangocentral, with Adrian Ocneanu, who will be accompanied by the pianist Katee Burago. She says tango music is “sensual and heated… so you can feel the passion running through you.”

Arts Fest food is equally as popular as the art. Chocolate covered strawberries, smoothies, fresh lemonade, ethic treats, and much more. Restaurants downtown are also open for business. Don’t let the crowd scare you… if you pick the right time you can score a great table overlooking the festival at Allen Street Grill.
New This Year
For the first time this year there will be a booth of Penn State students selling student work. And for the first time in many years there will be a classical concert at St. Andrews Episcopal Church on Saturday at 3 p.m.. For more casual music, the festival will make use of local talent by hosting jam sessions for folk musicians.
Parking
To make your visit to the festival easier, use the festival parking area at Jordan East, next to the Bryce Jordan Center. Parking here will cost $5 a day, and you can ride the free shuttle buses downtown and around the festival.
Visit The Pasto Agricultural Museum Journey back to a time when farmers used muscle power, both human and animal, to produce food and fiber. Get hands-on experience with rare and unusual farm and household items dating from 4,000 BC to the 1940s. Learn about early farm life and how it contributed to the growth of our nation. Happy Valley Day Trip Victorian Bellefonte Epitomizes Charm If you have the urge to explore but don’t want to stray too far from the heart of the action, Bellefonte is the ideal choice. Just 12 easy miles north of State College off Rt. 220, Bellefonte was founded in 1795 and is steeped in a rich history, evident in the Victorian architecture of town’s homes and businesses alike. The best way to experience Bellefonte, a National Historic District, is up close and personal, so park the car and get out and stretch your legs. The terrain is hilly so wear your walking shoes, or stop by Campinis (at the corner of Allegheny and Bishop Streets) to pick up a pair. Historical Museum (203 N. Allegheny Street), and check out more than 4,000 items from the area’s earliest Native American culture to artifacts of daily life in the early 1900s. One short block away, find themed exhibits in the Bellefonte Museum (133 N. Allegheny Street).
Dining La Bella Trattoria, located in the lower level of the Garman Opera House, serves traditional regional Italian cuisine in a unique atmosphere. High Street Pub (213 W. High Street) incorporates as many regionally‑produced ingredients as possible, and has great beers on tap. There’s a small deck for outdoor dining in nice weather. Jim’s Italian Cuisine (East Cherry Lane) is a hidden gem that’s busy from open (4 PM) to close (8 PM), but worth the short wait for a table. Join the ducks on a stroll through Talleyrand Park
Talleyrand Park Stroll through Talleyrand Park , where the “beautiful waters” for which the town is named flow through Big Spring. Visitors and residents alike enjoy feeding the gigantic fish (feeding the ducks is not allowed) or snacking on a sandwich or ice cream cone from The Café on the Park, right across the street. The park offers free wireless internet connection and is home to the restored Bellefonte train station, where period passenger trains still run on special occasions, such as the Bellefonte Cruise and Victorian Christmas.
Shopping Though the town is small, you could spend an entire day shopping in its quaint shops and antique stores. The farmer’s market, held in front of the courthouse on Allegheny Street, Wednesdays and Saturdays April through November, offers locally grown produce and seasonal flowers. Find upscale antiques at Victorian House Antiques and Artisan Gallery on High Street. Also on High Street, check out Pure Imagination for classic toys and games, and Go Velocity for die cast cars and trucks as well as vintage European and Japanese tin toys, a must for car lovers. The Black Cat artists’ cooperative on Allegheny Street showcases some of the area’s finest artists. Local artists are also featured at the Garman Opera House (116 E. High Street), a restored 1890s theatre now operating as a state‑of‑the art movie theatre.
History If you’re a history buff, stop by the Centre County Library and
Gamble Mill Tavern (160 Dunlop Street) offers upscale dining in a casual, rustic atmosphere. Recently purchased by the owners of State College favorite Zola New World Bistro, the Gamble Mill offers the same delicious food and some new menu items. Hofbrau (106 E. Bishop Street) Enjoy their “world famous” pizza, wings or a sandwich.
Birds‑eye View When you finish your walking tour and are back in the car, cap off your day by taking in one of the best views in Happy Valley: From Talleyrand Park drive up High Street to the Centre County Courthouse and turn right onto Allegheny Street. Follow Allegheny through the traffic light at Bishop Street and head to the top of the hill where you can pull your car into an on‑street parking space and turn around. The tops of the Victorian buildings rise up from the street and are set against the backdrop of the surrounding hills. From this vantage point View from the top you can see the true beauty of this charming small town, just one of many special places in Happy Valley.
