Fall in Happy Valley: an infusion of 43,000 students and another 100,000 fans for eight home games and our quiet college town is transformed into a bustling, buzzing ball of energy. Penn State takes kids and transcends them into life-long loyal alumni, and our website is dedicated to serving this ever-growing population. This issue we celebrate the heart of Happy Valley, its crown jewel, the “boardwalk” if Happy Valley was on the beach: Downtown State College. For me, Downtown holds many memories. From my first lunch at the Deli in 1975 while visiting my older siblings who were students, to frequent lunches at the Corner Room, to many times at the Skeller, to an iconic moment of witnessing my parents dancing
at the Gaff to “Build me up Buttercup.” I will always love Downtown State College. I am happy to report that Downtown is only getting better in a world where many Downtowns are dying. In fact, our webmaster recently visited California said places like San Jose are all attempting to become State College-like. We’re lucky enough to live here and to make a living celebrating why so many of you enjoy visiting. Whether you’re studying here, dropping off a student, or here for a game, it’s our pleasure to celebrate you home! greg@happyvalley.com

Navigating the Apartment Search By Annalynne Kennawell Can’t have more than three friends comfortably fit into your dorm room? Looking for more privacy or a shower you don’t have to wear flip flops in? Or worse, have you suffered the same fate as many before you and been denied housing or placed in the dreaded supplemental? Maybe it’s time to consider getting an apartment. Luckily Happy Valley has lots of options to fit your specific needs.
Start Looking Early
The best advice anyone can give you in getting a good apartment in Happy Valley is to start early. You just finished hanging up your clothes and making your bed in your nice new cozy dorm room, don’t even think about having a long overdue chat session with your roommate. Now is the time to start looking for an apartment for next year. They go fast. Especially downtown. This is especially true if you have any specific requirements for your apartment-tobe, such as having your own bedroom or require an odd number of roommates.
House or Complex
One of the first decisions to make is whether you want to live in a complex or a house. Complexes offer a lot of pluses: often they include utilities in the rent, and some even have great extras like an onsite gym, laundry, pool, or convenience store. Be sure to note that complexes are far more strict about parties and they don’t offer any outdoor space, so if you are looking to live in Happy Valley over the summer that might be something to think about. Houses are good for bigger groups or if you prefer your own room, but are on a tight budget. Also, in houses you generally have more control over things like bills and move-in/move-out dates.
Downtown Living
To live downtown or not to live downtown? There are many reasons to live ‘out by Wal-Mart’ or over in “UT such as cheaper rooms and bigger places not to mention the perks of hot tubs, pools, gyms and free parking. Living downtown has a whole different vibe to it. Many people cringe at the thought of urine scented stairwells and the Penn State fight song played full blast at all hours of the night on any given night, but others find it to be the true Penn State experience, not to speak of ‘location, location, location.’ You really can’t beat the five-minute walk Downtown living gets you close to campus or the downtown scene to the action. that you can be a part of from your balcony.
Be Informed and Be Assertive
In the end do not be afraid to be assertive. Know what you are doing. Read your lease and ask a lot of questions. Build a good relationship with your realtor or landlord. Make sure you know all your options. For example, some places will let you take the apartment ‘as is’ if you need to move in early. Take pictures of the apartment so you have proof when security deposit time comes around. Be respectful and expect respect in return, do not further stereotypes of irresponsible college students. Help keep Happy Valley a great place for apartment living.

On the Shopping Block Tips on Where to Get Everything from Textbooks to Groceries to Clothes By Krystal Klokow Feeling a little lost on a campus of 42,000+ students? Don’t know where to start when it comes to buying the necessities (or the not-so-necessities) for the upcoming semester? Thinking of going to your first Penn State game in your old high school sweatshirt? (Tip: Don’t even think about it!). Our shopping experts give you the scoop on the best stores, the best deals, and the best ways to avoid waiting in line. Whether you need to buy a textbook for English Lit, a sandwich for dinner or a Penn State hoodie…we’ve got your guide to finding them all.
Textbooks and School Supplies: Because School Comes First, Right?
Don’t be surprised if the majority of your summer earnings are spent before you even start classes. With the average semester’s books costing $450 to $600, it definitely doesn’t hurt to shop around to save a few bucks. The best deals on textbooks can usually be found off-campus bookstores. Tip: Make sure you take care of shopping for textbooks before your parents - and their checkbooks - leave town. The Student Bookstore on College Ave. has some of the lowest prices on textbooks. Nicknamed “The Big Blue on the Corner,” The Student Bookstore also carries a selection of Penn State logo school supplies such as binders and planners. They also offer Vera Bradley notepads and calendars. Got Used Bookstore does exactly what the name implies – they sell last year’s used books at a fraction of the original cost. They also will buy back your books for cash at the end of the semester. Tip: Don’t flunk your first test! Make sure the used book you’re about to buy is the same edition as the one outlined in your course syllabus. Don’t feel like waiting in line? Online bookstores such as PhatCampus.com and TextbookX.com offer discounted prices and are easy to navigate when the bookstores are often busy and confusing to first year students. Target, Wal-Mart and Bed, Bath and Beyond are all within driving (or a bus ride) distance for school supplies, dorm/apartment furnishings and more!
Groceries: Because Mom’s Not Here and You’ve Gotta Eat
Yes, it’s crazy. Starting college means that Mom’s not around to stock your fridge. And trust us, the coolness of Commons’ food will wear off after a few weeks. So here are a few tips on where to go for the best location, price and selection on groceries. Tip: Ramen Noodles and Easy Mac will become your new best friends. Accept it. For convenience, shop McLanahan’s Downtown Market located within walking distance on South Allen Street. It offers a full line of grocery items, fresh cut meats, a deli, plus any toiletries you may need. They also sell printer cartridges, which is a helpful hint to remember when your printer runs out of ink later this year. If you need to stock up on grocery items, head to the local Weis or Giant. Make sure to sign up for their preferred shopper or bonus card to get extra savings. Wal-Mart is often a student favorite as well. There are two locations close to campus, one on North
Atherton and another located on the Benner Pike. Tip: Don’t go hungry just because you don’t have a car. The CATA Bus makes frequent trips to all local shopping plazas.
Penn State Gear: Because You Can’t Be the Only One in the Stadium not Wearing Blue and White
We don’t care what your parents say…you can never have enough Penn State apparel! Take advantage of the beginning-of-the-semester discounts at these downtown stores. The Family Clothesline on College Ave. has two full floors of Penn State gear of every kind. Owned and operated by Penn State alumni, The Family Clothesline has strived to keep its prices down for the past 22 years. They offer authentic Penn State licensed clothing and other Nittany Lion souvenirs. The Student Bookstore has one of the best and largest selections when it comes to shopping for Penn State attire. From tees to sweatshirts to pajamas, The Student Bookstore has so much to choose from when stocking up your favorite colors of blue and white. Lions Pride on College Ave. offers quality Penn State clothing in both traditional and contemporary styles. They are also the only downtown location to sell team practice and game day apparel from Nike. Currently expanding their present location, they also offer custom embroidery and imprinting for your Penn State apparel. Tip: Dressing from head to toe in blue and white for a football game = OK. Dressing from head to toe in blue and white for a date, for a presentation, or for an internship interview = Not OK.

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year: Our Take on the 2008 Season By John Apperson Whether you live in State College, come for games, or follow the Nittany Lions squad from afar, another football season does not simply mean that you should brush up on the roster and get ready to root for the team. Penn State football has as passionate a following and there are plenty of story lines to follow. Whether you are a casual fan or a die hard, here is a brief overview that will have you plenty prepared for any tailgating discussions. As a recent inductee to the College Football Hall of Fame, Joe Paterno is one of only three coaches to receive this honor while still active. He stands at second in all-time in wins with 372 victories among major college coaches. However, at 81 years of age, the talk is as much about when Joe will stop coaching, as it is about how great he is. This is the last year of Joe’s contract, but he certainly doesn’t imply that he plans to stop anytime soon. There will be many rumors and theories surrounding Joe this season, but barring a horrible season or health concerns, you can bank on Joe being back again next year. The Nittany Lions have rarely been in the spotlight for off-the-field issues. Joe’s program has been held up as a shining example of a fine student-athlete program. But a July 27, ESPN program, “Outside the Lines,” ran a story on recent legal issues facing Penn State football players. The numbers discussed were certainly staggering. “Outside the Lines” reported that 46 PSU players have been charged with 163 criminal counts since 2002. Twenty-seven players plead guilty to a total of 45 counts. These statistics are leveraged by many to say Joe has “lost control” of his program. However, the other side of the argument from Joe is that the behavior of his players has not necessarily deteriorated, but that the media coverage and seriousness with which how things are handled have both increased. The truth, I’d speculate, lies somewhere in the middle. The numbers speak for themselves and Joe Paterno’s point is not without merit. So, it all boils down to this, the PSU team has some work to do to clean up the recent blemish on its image, but not as much work as some would have you believe. Those issues aside, here’s a look at the team on the field. On offense, the vacant starting quarterback spot left by Anthony Morelli will be manned by either Daryll Clark (Jr) or Pat Devlin (So). Look for a dual QB system until one of these young men takes the lead or Joe’s fancy. They’ll be handing the ball off to Evan Royster (So) most of the time, as he’s the likely starter at tailback. However, Stephon Green (Fr) has become a bit of a phenom to those who follow team gossip. He’s said to have amazing speed and should certainly compete for carries. Departed All-American linebacker Dan Connor often raved about Green’s performance in practice vs. the starting defense last year. In the increasingly rare instances that Penn State uses a fullback it will be Dan Lawlor (Sr). All of these folks will be protected by five returning starters on the offensive line, which is good news — PSU tends to generate quality play from this unit when there is little to no turnover. The aerial attack is headed by the former top- rated recruit Derrick Williams (Sr). He will be joined by Deon Butler (Sr) and Jordan Norwood (Sr).
Defense, usually Penn State’s strength, is a large question mark going into 2008. The combination of Dan Connor graduating, Justin King leaving early for the NFL draft, an injury to standout linebacker Sean Lee, and the possible absence of multiple other key defenders due to disciplinary reasons has left this unit in a state of flux. The names you can count on are Anthony Scirrotto (Sr) and Tony Davis (Sr) playing the hero and free safety positions respectively. AJ Wallace (Jr) has the potential to step into Justin King’s shoes as the number one cornerback if he can gain more consistency in his play. Linebacker Chris Colasanti should be a household name by the season’s end as PSU will, yet again, have a strong line backing corps despite the holes to fill. The defensive line will have Maurice Evans (Jr), Jared Odrick (Jr), and Josh Gaines (Sr) to stuff holes and rush the passer. Defensive coordinator Tom Bradley has always driven his unit to perform well, but this year will be a challenge for him. Many fans were vocally upset about PSU’s home schedule this season. However, season ticket holders shattered a record with a renewal rate in excess of 99%! Penn State always has strong ticket sales, but being in Beaver Stadium for what “could be” Joe’s last season, is clearly a draw. Coastal Carolina, Oregon State, a trip to Syracuse, and Temple comprise the out-of-conference schedule. Big Ten football for the Lions will begin with a primetime match-up in Beaver Stadium vs. recently-improved Illinois followed by a trip to Purdue. Penn State will then return home hoping to defeat Michigan for the first time since 1995. Ohio State, the likely Big Ten champs, have beaten PSU in every meeting inside the unfriendly confines of Ohio Stadium since the Nits joined Big Ten Conference in 1993, so an 8 p.m. kickoff vs. the Buckeyes will be the largest challenge on the schedule. One last road game in Iowa before the team comes home for a contest vs. Indiana. Finally, Penn State will have its annual battle for the Land Grant trophy against Michigan State University. With questions surrounding Joe’s future, the state of the program, personnel issues, a first year quarterback, and Penn State’s recent track record of poor performance on the road, it all adds up to a soso season. I’d predict a 8-4 regular season with likely losses to OSU and Wisconsin on the road and a couple of close games that don’t break the blue and white way over the course of the year. Here’s to hoping for pleasant surprises to make what “could be” Joe’s last year a pleasant one. Of course I believe that line may have been written a few dozen times before.

The Penn State Tailgater: The 12th Man By Jennifer Young For many people, tailgating isn’t just a way to spend the time before or after a Penn State football game, it’s a way of life. It is just as important—if not even more so—than the game itself. If you don’t believe this, take a look around the parking lots on game day. Check out the people in matching “tailgate team” t-shirts; the old school buses that have been gutted, painted blue and white, and outfitted with more amenities than some local hotel rooms; the giant smoker grills housed on their own trailers; and the outdoor living rooms created next to some RVs, complete with couches, coffee tables, satellite dishes, big screen TVs, and even hired acoustic guitar musicians. It is thanks to the dedication of people like these that Penn State is regularly ranked in the top five tailgating schools in the country. Don’t have a spare bus or RV lying around? Don’t despair: you can have a great tailgate without shelling out a ton of cash or putting forth a ton of effort. Planning ahead is a great way to lessen game-day stress. A few days before the big day, think about the menu: are you going to just have burgers and dogs, or do you want to get a bit fancier? For some extra fun, think about doing a theme based on each week’s opponent, such as pulled pork for Coastal Carolina, cheese steaks for Temple, and bratwurst for Illinois. Finger foods should be the theme of the day—no one wants to have to try to find a place to sit down and juggle a plastic knife and fork on a paper plate. Prepare as much as possible a day or two in advance and pack food in disposable containers so there’s less to take home at the end of the day. If you’re planning to tailgate for more than one game, put together a tailgating kit that includes items you’ll use each time like paper
plates, cups, napkins, plastic utensils, table cloths, trash bags, sunscreen, wet wipes and a first aid kit. Or, laminate a checklist of items needed each week and check them off with a dry-erase marker as each one is packed (can you tell I’m a pro?). Just like in football, teamwork is the key to successful tailgating. Ask everyone who will be coming to your tailgate to bring something so you’re not stuck preparing everything yourself. If it’s the same group every week, consider having a rotation so no one gets tired of bringing the same thing: one week someone brings an appetizer, the next week a dessert, the next week some drinks, and so on. While most people think automatically of “adult beverages” when planning their tailgate, it’s important to remember to bring plenty of soda and especially water to have on hand for those who either choose to either not partake or take a break from the alcohol. Many local stores, such as Wegmans, Giant, Clem’s Barbecue, and Prospector’s Allegheny Rib Company often offer tailgating platters and specials for those who don’t want to go to the effort of cooking. These specials often are limited and/or change from week to week, so it is a good idea to call ahead and inquire prior to game day. Whatever you do, don’t forget the entertainment! A Frisbee or Nerf football always is a great go-to, but recent years have shown the emergence of games like tailgate golf, cornhole and washers, just to name a few. Never underestimate the power of tailgating. Joe Paterno has commented during his press conferences that tailgating helps fire up the crowd, which in turn fires up the team. Be the 12th man and fulfill your tailgating commitment this fall.

Tailgate Banter: What You Need to Know to Participate Most overlooked game…
Sports writers are predicting losses to…
Oregon State, ranked 18th by SI, comes to PSU with a high-powered offense and PAC-10 experience (they’re no Akron Zips) challenging some to ask who will prevail: the Beavers or Beaver Stadium?
Ohio State, Wisconsin and with at least one or two other opponents.
Game not to miss… Michigan State game JUST IN CASE it ends up being JoePa’s last game coaching in Beaver Stadium.
Most successful offensive system (today)… The Spread Offense is taking over college football, and Penn State will be running its own version this year. “The Spread” is when teams remove the fullback and sometimes running back from the backfield, spreading receivers out across the line of scrimmage to run 5 different receiving routes. It is difficult to defend and teams like Florida, WVU, and Mizzou experienced success with it. Look for Michigan to employ this offense under the tutelage of new coach Rich Rodriguez (former WVU coach).
Most anticipated home game… Illinois, under the lights at 8 p.m. Not to mention the all-day tailgating extravaganza beforehand.

Underestimated asset… Penn State has one of the best offensive lines in years leading the run and pass blocking, which could be the sleeper asset to propel them to only 2 losses and, who knows, maybe a better year than anyone is expecting.
Off the field chatter… ESPN’s Outside the Lines program on off-the-field incidents will still be a hot topic.
The Paterno political divide… Jay Paterno is supporting Obama and Joe is supporting McCain.
The Tale of Two Quarterbacks... When it’s all said and done, who’ll lead the Lions down the field in ’08, Daryll Clark or Pat Devlin?
Potential replacements for Joe… Will Tom Bradley take the reigns or will an outsider come in to take over? That is, if it is JoePa’s last season…
Rock Out with Rock On State Rock on State is a modern spin on the historic fight songs that Penn Staters and fans love and cherish. Conceptualized and produced by former Blue Band Drum Major Trevor Gast, Rock on State is a blend of traditional Penn State pride carefully mixed with a rock edge. The album features rock versions of the Penn State classics Hail to the Lion, Victory, Fight on State, and The Alma Mater. In addition, Rock on State includes an anthem for the new generation, We Are. All songs on the Rock on State album were recorded, arranged and performed by pop-rock recording artists, Sunset West. Comprised of the alumni brother-sister duo of Jill Jayne (HHD ‘04) and Mark Jayne (CM ‘07), Sunset West is proud to bring their talents back to the University. Rock on State is an officially licensed Penn State product and is available at The Student Bookstore, The Family Clothesline, Lions Pride, McLanahan’s Penn State Room, Rapid Transit Sports and online at www.rockonpennstate.com. Return to Happy Valley: The Alumni Perspective By Scott Ott Ensconced in the apple-red 1966 Mustang convertible, Jerry, Paul and I glided through the crowd next to Beaver Stadium under a cloud-kissed indigo sky. Jerry had secured 50-yard-line tickets with a parking pass from a wealthy alum. He slid Iacocca’s dream gingerly between two over-decorated conversion vans, in the very shadow of the stadium. Our lives were complete. This was the zenith. Three fraternity buddies who started out as freshmen in Pinchot Hall, arrive in style to the accolades of our nameless fellow Penn Staters. We’ve come to enjoy the greatest afternoon in history from the best seats on the planet. As if by magic, we had become the alums we used to mock (and envy) from a distance—back when we struggled to stand erect in the six-dollar cheap, wet, boisterous southeast corner of the stadium. Now we were the people who decided when ‘the wave’ would die, the people who shouted the definitive response “Penn State” when we heard the youthful call “We are...”, the people who remained seated until the Lions did something really impressive. ‘You want us to stand and cheer?’ we almost sneer at JoePa...earn it!
Yes, now we were officially...old guys. It’s like a second puberty, a phase-two bar-mitzvah, this rite of passage into elderly alumdom. The young women at whom we used to gaze longingly, suddenly looked more like daughters than opportunities. The beer had become a beverage with flavor, enjoyed in moderation, rather than a high-volume tranquilizer. The transition from a life of reckless abandon, to one of responsibility and confident self-control had drawn nigh. We now had wives, children, jobs, community involvement, dreams reached and new dreams hatched. We had met the future, and it was us. Inside each of us there’s a yearning to return to the halcyon days of our youth, but as we near our old stomping grounds in Happy Valley we find that another herd has supplanted us. These are they who stomp to the beat of a different drummer...or a different rapper. (Who knew when we first heard The Sugarhill Gang in 1979 that it would come to this?) This year marks a quarter-century since I flew from the Nittany nest, bearing my B.A. degree, with a head full of dreams and, to be honest, a lot of ridiculous notions about life. This autumn, I’ll doubtless pick a weekend to navigate the mini-van through the Lewistown gap, loaded with today’s treasured memorymakers—our children. We’ll visit some local friends and relatives, marvel at all the new buildings, and probably attend a football game. At some point in the weekend, as if drawn by a magnet, I’ll cruise through downtown State College and up onto campus. I’ll bore the wife and kids with historical discourses as we pass points of interest, and then we’ll retreat to a friend’s house. Happy Valley seems sometimes like Brigadoon, emerging from the mist between the ridges. But it’s more than that. It’s a great community, with nice neighborhoods, vibrant high-tech businesses, joyful churches, lots of little league sports and an ever-growing selection of restaurants and shopping opportunities. I return to Happy Valley to touch base with the past, but really, to enjoy today in a place like no other.
