Savor a Meal and Drink in the View at Mt. Nittany Inn A Happy Valley Gem is Back in Business Why eat just anywhere when you can dine on top of the world… or at least on top of Happy Valley. In November 2008, the Mt. Nittany Inn reopened at its historic location on top of the mountain

between Centre Hall and Pleasant Gap, overlooking beautiful Penns Valley. The breathtaking view, combined with fresh, delicious menu offerings make the Mt. Nittany Inn the perfect choice for lunch, dinner or Sunday brunch.

A Fascinating History and Recent Challenges

Originating as a roadside stand for drivers making the trek over the mountain, the Inn has a long and dramatic history. In 1919, the first proprietor on the Inn’s location began selling snacks to travelers who often stopped to fill their radiators after the long, slow journey up the mountain. The original building was constructed in 1928 and in subsequent years became a coffee shop, grill and bar. Significant improvements were made in 1975, and a major renovation in 1991 added a deck and a ten‑room bed and breakfast. After suffering substantial damage from a fire in 2003, rebuilding began only to be halted by another, more devastating fire in 2005, in which the Inn was completely destroyed.

New and Improved: Loft Seating, More Deck Space and a Lovely Banquet Room

To the delight of Happy Valley residents and visitors alike, the Inn is back in business following a total rebuild in 2007‑08. (Continued on Page 7)

HappyValley.com 7

Mt. Nittany Inn… Continued from Page 6. The new and improved Mt. Nittany Inn is bright, airy and freshly painted, but the charm of this unique establishment remains. Removing the bed and breakfast accommodations allowed for the addition of more seating in a new loft section, dubbed the Looking Glass Lounge. With the spectacular view, there’s not a bad seat to be had in the Lounge. More outdoor seating space is now available when weather permits thanks to an extended deck area. It’s ideal for enjoying a meal when the air is warm and the sun is shining. Banquet space on the lower level can accommodate up to 125 guests—perfect for bridal and baby showers, reunions, parties and other special occasions.

A Traditional Menu Comes to Life

If you’re a longtime fan on the Inn, you’ll be happy to hear that the bruschetta is still offered as an appetizer and is just as delicious as always. Also try the Cajun Chicken Firestix, a unique stand‑out among the other mouth‑watering starter items, like bacon‑wrapped BBQ shrimp and calamari. Salads are anything but boring thanks to the freshest greens and veggies and the Inn’s homemade dressing selections, including tomato vinaigrette and creamy cracked peppercorn. If you’re a ranch‑lover, you’ll keep coming back for the homemade buttermilk ranch. In addition to a soup of the day, you can enjoy French onion and clam chowder any day of the week.

The lunchtime sandwich selection includes hot favorites like chicken cheesesteaks, burgers, reubens and rachels, all prepared and served perfectly: piping hot on the freshest bread and rolls. For dinner, choose from unique steak, chicken, pork or seafood entrees, or enjoy lamb, veal or venison. All dinners—like classic filet or prime rib, lemon chicken with mushrooms in cream sauce, ahi tuna steak, and pan‑seared venison with mushrooms and rosemary in port wine‑dijon cream sauce—are served with your choice of two sides. Select from soup, salad, fresh cut fries, cucumber and onion salad, and more. The dinner menu also includes pasta dishes, including a four‑mushroom pasta toss with asparagus, roasted garlic, scallions, tomatoes and parmesan, and butternut squash ravioli. Sunday brunch runs from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. and includes a delectable variety of breakfast and lunch items. Is your mouth watering yet? Don’t wait another day to enjoy a unique dining experience at Mt. Nittany Inn.

The Green Life in Happy Valley Spikes and Medlar Field

Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, home to the State College Spikes and Penn State baseball team, is the ultimate among green sports facilities! The ballpark is LEED‑certified, being the first stadium in the world with the distinction when it opened in 2006. The Spikes are even incorporating the green theme in their All‑Star Game festivities on (August 18). Spikes GM Jason Dambach saw the All‑Star Game as the “perfect stage for this concept to take center stage.” Five “Going Green Tuesday” giveaways are set before games this summer, each featuring an item made from recyclable materials: June 30 All‑Star Logo Reusable Grocery Bag presented by P.J. Buy Fresh, Buy Local: Farmers Markets and Local Restaurants Offer the Freshest Fare Did you know that on average, food travels over 1,500 miles before it reaches your plate? Cut down on those miles and support local producers and businesses while enjoying fresher foods: buy locally! The Centre County Chapter of Buy Fresh Buy Local®, a project of the Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture (PASA) can help you reap the fresh rewards of Happy Valley’s thriving agricultural community. You don’t have to wait until summer to enjoy local goods! Two area markets operate indoors in in the cooler months. Visit the Boalsburg Fire Hall in historic Boalsburg from 3:00‑6:00 p.m. Tuesdays, or head to Spring Mills’ Old Gregg School Community Center Market on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The Spring Mills market features fresh baked goods, eggs, homemade granola, meats and cheeses, and beautiful crafts. When spring arrives, the Boalsburg market moves outside to the beautiful grounds of the PA Military Museum, and opens for an extra hour (2:00‑6:00 p.m.). On Fridays the popular State College Farmers Market transforms Downtown’s Locust Lane into a sea of local produce, plants and wares from 11:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The week culminates with the 4th Annual Centre County Farm Tour on Saturday the 8th. Enjoy the unique opportunity to visit area farms, learn more about their processes and products, and collect local items to bring home with you. As the date nears you can view a map of participating farms and plan a fresh and festive daytrip!

Several area restaurants are Buy Fresh Buy Local® Partners:

• Happy Valley’s own microbrewery, Otto’s Pub and Brewery, features Local Foods Nights each Thursday, often combining their beers with local ingredients in their dishes. (The “spent grain” from the beer‑making process is even fed to their cows!) • Harrison’s Wine Grill and Catering’s ever‑changing menu centers on the produce available each season, such as in August during their annual “Fresh & Local GarlicFest.” • Downtown favorite Herwig’s Austrian Bistro makes bratwursts and schnitzels from local meats. Their menu even changes daily with what’s on hand ‑ check out their menuboard!

The 2008 National Champion men’s volleyball team has been on quite a roll this season, including a ten‑in‑a‑row shutout streak! Weeks ago the Lions captured home court for the EIVA Championships, as they are held at the home of the top seed. The best of the conference will now come to Rec Hall for the EIVA Semifinals (Apr. 30) with the winners facing off in the Championship (May 2). Penn State hopes to advance from their home court to defend their 2008 title at the 2009 National Collegiate Championships in Provo, Utah on May 7 and 9. The Penn State men’s golf team can look forward to showing off its renovated Blue Course May 1‑3 as they host the Big Ten Championships for the first time since 1996. Happy Valley Market Report

Local Real Estate Market Remains Strong as Area Continues to Grow By Alison Newman Looking to sell your home or buy a new one? With the current state of the national economy, many are wondering how Centre County home sales are affected. HappyValley.com talked with local realtors to get the scoop about the local market.

Centre County has a Lot to Offer “In my opinion it, is an active and sporadic market right now,” said Re/Max Real Estate Agent Scott Yocum. Yocum, who has more than 21 years of experience as a realtor, may have some encouraging news. He said that the last few weeks have yielded more open house traffic than had been seen in the last quarter of 2008. Jan Gracy, sales manager at Kissinger Bigatel & Brower REALTORS®, thinks everybody in Centre County is concerned with what they hear about the real estate market on a national level. She stresses that it is important to realize it is all about the local market. “The area has a lot to offer, with a strong employer structure in place between the University, the hospital and the local school districts,” she said. “The area also has many parks and the Tussey Mountain ski area.” And both realtors agree that now is a good time to buy. “I’m a big believer in Centre County,” said Yocum. “Right now, it’s good with low interest rates.”

It is a pleasure to be of service to you in all your real estate needs. Mary Ann Scordo, ABR, CRS, e-PRO, GRI, OA Prudential First Choice Realty

What Houses are Selling? Gracy said the properties that are in good condition and priced correctly are selling.“Houses under $150,000 in good condition are flying off the shelf,” she said. While it depends on the price range, Gracy believes many buyers are in a competitive market. For first‑time buyers, she stresses the importance of meeting with a realtor and S&A Homes currently has five new home communities understanding your market, in the Bellefonte area. and to match that market with areas you can afford and areas that work well for your family. “Nothing is perfect, just like people, but you have to see what works for you,” she said. She said it is also important to meet with a local, reputable lender to get pre‑approved for a home loan. “Our local banks have been doing well and they have the funds to lend to qualified buyers,” she said. “Do it now because the prices are good for a long‑term investment.”

The Biggest Investment You Can Make: Your Realtor Like many first‑time homebuyers, you may not know how to select a realtor who will work for you. Yocum recommends interviewing a full‑time real estate professional to see how his or her business style will impact your chances of landing a dream home. Since anywhere from 12 to 20 people can be involved in one sales transaction, Yocum stressed the importance of finding a qualified agent who can be on top of everything, whether you’re a buyer or a seller. But even with the perfect realtor, the market is unpredictable. According to Yocum, one of the toughest parts of the current real estate market is that some lenders and appraisers are being extremely cautious, and Yocum defends this approach. He compared the real estate market to the stock market, saying that there are so many variables including as supply and demand and the economy, along with markets going up and down. However, one thing is for certain: Happy Valley is growing. According to Gracy, the completion of Interstate 99 has opened up the Bellefonte, Pleasant Gap, Zion and other areas to be more accessible for daily commutes into the State College area. She also said there are new developments in those areas that are perfect for families. Though the future of the real estate market still remains unclear, KBB has begun posting sold prices of homes on their web site so that interested parties can easily research local home sales prices. Gracy added that KBB has also recently started opening their doors at their office at 1612 North Atherton Street from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. Monday evenings to answer any questions buyers or sellers may have.
