PA Military Museum The Pennsylvania Military Museum is ap‑ propriately located in Boalsburg, the birthplace of Memorial Day. Inside you will be impressed with the real machinery and informative displays, and you’ll leave with a renewed respect for the Commonwealth’s role in military history. Penn’s Cave and Wildlife Park If you’ve driven to and from Happy Valley on any major roadway, you’ve seen their billboards—Penn’s Cave, See it By Boat. But don’t be fooled—this succinct little promotion doesn’t sum up the Penn’s Cave experience. A natural wonder in its own right (America’s only water cavern, thanks very much), the cave tour is as entertaining as it is awe‑inspiring. We highly recommend the combo package that also includes the wildlife tour, a 1.5‑hour safari‑style trek through the meadows, woods, and wetlands on Penn’s Cave’s grounds, and a chance to get up close and personal with its wild residents. Nittany Lion Bling is What Every Penn Stater Wants to Find Under the Tree By Jessica Savrock Looking for the perfect gift for the No. 1 Penn State fan in your life? Though this school-specific jewelry is just a part of their overall business, McKee says that is popular for those looking to show their Penn State pride in a unique way. “Penn State occupies a certain part of the hearts of many students and alumni, and our jewelry is tied to that emotion,” said McKee. “Rather than this jewelry relating to the connection of a husband or wife, it is tied to the emotion of your college experience.” Janelle Mikulca, a senior at Penn State, agrees. She received her Nittany Lion ring as a 21st birthday gift. “The ring means a lot to me and shows my pride at the same time,” she said. “Each time I look down at the ring, I think of all my Penn State experiences and the many wonderful friends I met. It really reflects the fact that Penn State has molded me into the adult I feel I am now.”

What’s New in Happy Valley By Kristin Bushong The biggest news in town of late is the opening of the much-anticipated Chipotle. The chain is well-known for reusing old buildings, this time being what was the Cinema 5 movie theatre. After opening with Free Burrito Day, the place has stayed packed with patrons choosing their own ingredients for burritos, tacos and burrito bowls. A new favorite opened its doors on October 7th: Fasta & Ravioli Co. Who else in town is making pasta and ravioli from scratch with unique flavors? Find them at 129 S. Fraser St. across from Chaar Tae Kwon Do. The former V&S Sandwiches is now Mamma Mia’s. The owner formerly ran Original Italian Pizza years ago where Margarita’s now resides. Visit for fresh baked pizzas and more. Zimmie’s Family Restaurant can be found across Atherton on College Ave. Stop by for family favorites for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Dee’s, another downtown mainstay, has departed and Happy Valley Freez quickly opened in its place.

Two downtown stores also relocated. When the End Result closed, Freeze Thaw Cycles moved from Fraser to the Allen St. spot. The whole move was done without the aid of a vehicle! Sticking with the sports theme, favorite hangout and skate shop Skate Penn moved a few blocks down Calder near the Pita Pit. Along with the State College Diner, another new eatery popped up on S. Atherton St. Pit Stop Pizza repurposed the former south Backyard Burger location and kept the drive-thru - so yes, that means drive-thru pizza. The award-winning Motel 6, located next to Mario & Luigi’s on N. Atherton St., quietly became a Quality Inn at the beginning of September. The 100% smoke free property still boasts 97 guestrooms with a Q Corner Breakfast Area. On the other side of town, the Best Western University Park Inn & Suites opened in time for Parents & Families weekend. Its menu items are named after famous Penn Staters and other local celebrities who left their indelible mark on our beloved Happy Valley. Owners and 2002 Penn State grads Josh and Cristin Guiher researched notable people from the surrounding area and made sure their legacy would not be forgotten. Using everything from the internet to the blue historical landmark plates around town, they collected a list and set to matching the menu items from there. Under previous ownership menu items were named after Hollywood stars, but Josh and Cristin knew the REAL stars are the ones who impacted the campus and community. Cappelletti, Penn State’s only Heisman Trophy winner, boasts a Roast Beef Reuben. Monte Ward, renowned 19th century baseball player from Bellefonte, offers the classic mix of Bacon, Lettuce and Tomato on a Club Sandwich. And Fred Pattee, former professor and writer of the Penn State Alma Mater, gives the perfect touch to a NY Style Chicken Breast Sandwich. Sandwich lovers will appreciate that all meats and cheeses are gluten-free, high-quality Boar’s Head brand, and are topped with only fresh vegetables. I can attest to the truth of this statement having personally enjoyed the Robert Bernreuter Italian Panini. I also recommend their soups, especially on cool fall and freezing winter days. But for Penn State fans looking to plan the ultimate road trip or the biggest Paternoville campout, it never hurts to look ahead. With upcoming out-of-conference games against Alabama and Virginia, and a unique trip to Washington DC, Penn State fans have a lot to look forward to in the future.

Who: Alabama Crimson Tide

What: This is the 14th meeting between two of the most-storied programs in college football. Alabama leads the all-time series 8-5, with Penn State winning the last meeting 9-0 in 1990. Where: Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa (919 miles from Beaver Stadium) When: Sept. 11, 2010 Why it’s important: For longtime PSU fans, this game will certainly bring back memories of classic Joe Paterno-Bear Bryant battles. The respect shared between the two programs is tremendous. Nittany Lion fans still remember the 1979 Sugar Bowl defeat to the Crimson Tide which cost Penn State a National Championship.

Who: Iowa Hawkeyes

What: Penn State’s first trip to Iowa since 2008’s last-second loss to the Hawkeyes. Iowa has won seven out of the last eight meetings with the Nittany Lions. Where: Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City (773 miles from Beaves Stadium) When: Oct. 2, 2010 Why it’s important: The Hawkeyes are the only Big Ten team that truly has Penn State’s number. This game will serve as the Big Ten opener for both teams and will set a major tone in the conference race. Will PSU be able to erase its Iowa demons?

Where: The friendly confines of Beaver Stadium When: Sept. 10, 2011 Why it’s important: Unless these two teams meet in a bowl game, this will almost certainly be Joe Paterno’s last game against a team he has incredible respect for. As November nears, Joe Paterno has his sights set on bringing the Big Ten Championship back to Beaver Stadium. Across the street in the Bryce Jordan Center, Nittany Lions head coach Ed DeChellis has some hardware of his own to defend. The NIT Champion men’s basketball team highlights an exciting winter sports season on the way in Happy Valley. The Nittany Lions are coming of an electrifying season that featured a school-record 27 wins, with 17 of them coming at home. Penn State will have to replace the scoring and leadership of graduated seniors Jamelle Cornley, Danny Morrissey and Stanley Pringle. The unquestioned general of this year’s team will be junior All-Big Ten point guard Talor Battle. Battle’s 2008-09 season was one of the best in Nittany Lion history. His 189 assists set the school’s single-season record. He was the league’s top regular season scorer last year with 17.3 points per game, and led the nation in playing time. Battle is a preseason candidate for the 2010 Wooden Award, given to the country’s best player. 42

Joining Battle in the backcourt will be sophomores Chris Babb and Cammeron Woodyard. Both guards are 6-5 and will have opportunities to create shots over smaller players. Babb and Woodyard are both effective three-point shooters. In the frontcourt, DeChellis will look to Jeff Brooks and David Jackson for more consistency. Jackson struggled early last season, but played his best basketball when it mattered, scoring 14 points in the NIT victory at Florida and 10 points in the title game against Baylor. Brooks’ long and wiry frame makes him a tough matchup for opposing coaches. At 6-8, he is not afraid to play under the net or beyond the arc. Centers Andrew Ott and Andrew Jones will once again be tested by the Big Ten’s best big men. Jones set career highs for scoring (16) and rebounding (14) in the NIT semifinal win over Notre Dame. At 6-10 and 240 pounds, Ott will be asked to defend some of the biggest and best centers in the country. Big home games on the Nittany Lions’ slate include Virginia Tech (Dec. 12), Wisconsin (Jan. 3), Illinois (Jan. 27) and Ohio State (Feb. 24).

Washington Leads the Lady Lions

Sharing the Jordan Center with the Nittany Lions of course are the Lady Lions, under the leadership of third-year head coach Coquese Washington, who had quite a successful offseason. In April, she gave birth to her second child, Rhaiyna. Then in September, she welcomed one of the best recruiting classes in the country to Penn State. WBCA and SLAM Magazine All-American Nikki Greene and Parade Magazine All-American Alex Bentley figure to make an immediate impact on the court. The Lady Lions return eight players from last season’s 11-17 squad, including leading scorer Tyra Grant.

Grant was the Big Ten’s secondleading scorer at 19.6 points per game and was named to the All-Big Ten first team. After the Lady Lions open their season on Nov. 13 at Drexel, they’ll turn right back for their regular season home opener Nov. 15 with NJIT. The Big Ten/ ACC Challenge follows, with Penn State welcoming Georgia Tech in the Yellow Jackets first visit to the BJC on Dec. 2nd. Conference play gets started at home Dec. 28 with Iowa. chants, music and…nachos. The crowd is rather knowledgeable but the game’s easy to follow for those new to hockey. Sit with the diehard fans in the center reserved section! Dayna Wenger, manager of team sports, noted a fun party held early this season. A lucky girl had her Sweet 16 party at the game, with not only a group of friends, but the players as well! They signed shirts and posters, and took pictures with the group. Sounds fun! Get your own group together and save with advance tickets! Sanderson’s Grapplers Ready to Impress in 2009-10 Wrestling Season By James Bunting

(Photo by Mark Selders) Penn State shook up the collegiate wrestling world in April when the school announced that wrestling legend Cael Sanderson would be the Nittany Lions’ next head coach. Sanderson has not just succeeded as a wrestler and coach; he has been nearly perfect. As a wrestler at Iowa State, Sanderson finished his career with a record of 159-0, four National Championships and four Most Outstanding Wrestler awards. As a coach at his alma mater, Sanderson led the Cyclones to three consecutive Big 12 Championships and never had a wrestler miss the national tournament. And as a nice side note, he also has an Olympic gold medal. Sanderson’s brother Cody made the move from Iowa State to serve as associate head coach here for the Lions. It doesn’t end there as younger brother Cyler will wrestle for the team in his senior year. Cyler is one of five Lions ranked in W.I.N.’s Pre-Season Top 20, coming in at No. 6 at 157. 2009 All-American Frank Molinaro is No. 7 at 141, with 2008 national runner up at 149, Bubba Jenkins, ranking No. 6. Senior Dan Vallimont moved up to 165 last season and will enter this one at No. 9, with Clearfield’s own Brad Pataky ranked No. 9 at 125. Get your first glimpse of Sanderson’s wrestlers at their intrasquad match on Thursday, Nov. 5 at Rec Hall. Five regular season duals will follow including the all-day Nittany Lion Open on Dec. 6, and a huge Big Ten weekend at the beginning of February with Northwestern on the 5th and Michigan on the 7th.
