What’s New in Happy Valley By Colleen Hanrahan and James Bunting Haven’t been to Happy Valley since the last football game? State College and the surrounding area might look a little different than you remember it. Some places have moved, some names have changed, and some new businesses have emerged. Here’s what’s new in Happy Valley…
Sugar On Top (121 ½ E. Beaver Ave.)
The new cupcake shop located next to Rita’s on Beaver Avenue is a fresh edition to Downtown State College. Sizes of their unique cupcakes include “Cupcakies” (mini cupcakes), “Oh MyMy” (regular size), and “Jumboness” (about twice as large as regular‑size brownies). They also sell truffles, brownies, and, oddly enough, candied bacon. Sugar On Top also makes vegan and create‑your‑own cupcakes for the pickier eater, or if you’re feeling brave, try their pancake and bacon cupcake. No, we’re not kidding. (sugarontopsc.com)
Lipstick (135 E. Beaver Ave.)
This hip new salon for women only is the female counter part of For Men Only, the barbershop on Beaver Avenue that holds true to its name. The interior reflects this, decorated with zebra‑print and pink furniture and walls. (lipsticksalon.com)
Otto’s (Future Home: 2235 N Atherton St.)
Otto’s Pub and Brewery will be moving a few blocks up the road this summer. Otto’s has purchased the former Quaker Steak and Lube building on North Atherton Street. The new location will provide more parking space, brewery space and pub seating for both loyal and new customers. (ottospubandbrewery.com)
Cozy Thai (232 S Allen St.)
Re‑locating from its home on East College Avenue, Cozy Thai has moved to South Allen Street, across from the police station and municipal building. Though still offering the same delicious Thai food, Cozy Thai now can accommodate 130 patrons, as opposed to the old location’s capacity of 60. (cozythaibistro.com)
Mezzanine (420 E College Ave.)
It started as the Crowbar, then became Cell Block, and now it’s The Mezzanine. Still located on East College Avenue, the Mezzanine is making an effort to bring more national acts to the area. LMFAO, Method Man and Red Man, and Omarion have all played at the club in recent weeks, and Mondays are now dedicated to indie rock bands. The new name comes from the club’s new chic design.
Crisp (200 E College Ave.)
A new salad and juice bar is now on the corner of Pugh Street and College Avenue. Specializing in sandwiches, salads, and smoothies, Crisp is a fresh new addition to the downtown restaurant scene.
Luna2 (2609 E College Ave.)
The wood grill and bar at the former Pizza Hut location is an extension of Faccia Luna…with a twist. Besides the traditional Faccia Luna menu options, Luna2 will also feature selections from the wood‑fired grill restaurant the owner, Bill McFadden, operates in Washington, D.C.
Beer Belly’s Beverage (258 W Hamilton Ave.)
A new beer distributor, Beer Belly’s Beverage, has opened in Hamilton Street shopping center next to Brother’s Pizza and Wild Side Pets. Beer Belly’s will not sell kegs, but will carry major brewers, microbrews and imports.
*ndulge (208 W College Ave.)
Another cupcake bakery will be opening downtown near Qdoba, aptly named *ndulge. This cupcake shop, like Sugar On Top, will feature specialty desserts such as Coca‑Cola flavored cupcakes. *ndulge is expected to open in mid‑May.
Tana Asian Cafe (454 E College Ave.)
The owners of Cozy Thai will be opening another Asian cuisine restaurant in Cozy’s former location on East College Avenue. Tana is expected to open shortly, with a menu stretching across several different Asian influences, not just Thai.
Poe Valley State Park
After a four year reconstruction plan, the Poe Valley State Park has reopened in time for trout season. The 620-acre park is accepting camping reservations for the spring and summer.
Millennium Science Complex
The skeletal structure of Penn State’s $215 million science center is complete. The three‑story, 275,000 square foot building is expected to open by the summer of 2011.
Plato’s Closet (1526 N Atherton St.)
Plato’s Closet has moved to the former location of Whitehill Lighting on North Atherton Street. The store offers a large selection of men’s and women’s gently used clothes, with the new location offering much more space for its growing inventory. (platosclosetstatecollege.com)

Amazing Laser Tag (What‑A‑Blast) Amazing Laser Tag has been voted best amusement place in State College for the past two years. It’s a fun‑filled attraction for kids, college students, or families. The Sowers Street location features a 2,400 square foot arena ‑ blacklit with ramps, stairs, sniper spots, mazes, and mirrors. You can even bring in your own music! Whatablastlasertag.com Center for the Performing Arts There’s no 42nd Street in Happy Valley, but we do have our little bit of Broadway. The 2009‑10 schedule saw some amazing perfor‑
mances like Avenue Q, STOMP, and Mamma Mia. What will the 2010‑11 schedule bring? Check out the Center’s Web site for new show announcements. cpa.psu.edu Downtown State College Improvement District Keeping downtown State College, our crown jewel, sparkling and vibrant is the job of the Downtown State College Improvement District (DSCID). In addition to helping to promote downtown business, the DSCID hosts downtown events, like weekly farmers markets, a fall chili cook‑off, the holiday favorite Polar Express, and of course, the First Night summer concert series. The DSCID also sells the Downtown Gift Card, redeemable at all the best downtown retailers. If you hate paying for
What to Do parking downtown, you can thank the DSCID for its parking program, that allows a long list of merchants and downtown businesses to validate parking slips in municipal garages. PA Military Museum The Pennsylvania Military Museum is ap‑ propriately located in Boalsburg, the birthplace of Memorial Day. You’ll know when you are there; you can’t miss the eye‑catching, colorful front façade design of military service ribbons. (They actually required Pentagon approval!) Inside you will be impressed with the real machinery and informative displays, and you’ll leave with a renewed respect for the Commonwealth’s role in military history. You can also visit the grounds for the annual People’s Choice Festival in July and other special events (see pamilmuseum.org), or to simply relax, perhaps with a picnic or on a walk with your dog. The Museum is also adjacent to the Shrine of the 28th Infantry Division, the Pennsylvania National Guard. Penn’s Cave and Wildlife Park If you’ve driven to and from Happy Valley on any major roadway, you’ve seen their billboards—Penn’s Cave, See it By Boat.
But don’t be fooled—this succinct little promotion doesn’t sum up the Penn’s Cave experience. A natural wonder in its own right (America’s only water cavern, thanks very much), the cave tour is as entertaining as it is awe‑inspiring. We highly recommend the combo package that also includes the wildlife tour, a 1.5‑hour safari‑style trek through the meadows, woods, and wetlands on Penn’s Cave’s grounds, and a chance to get up close and personal with its wild residents. Check out their website at pennscave.com. Penn Skates Ah, the skating rink. The lights, the music, the legwarmers and feathered hair. Lucky for your kids, it’s much cooler nowadays. Indeed, Penn Skates offers public roller skating in a fun, safe environment, plus video games, paint ball, affordable prices, and great packages and discounts. Interactive exhibits, once‑lost memorabilia, trophies and more tell tales of championships, innovations and individual achievements. Try your hand at fencing or pinning a life‑size wrestling dummy. It’s a must‑see for kids (great recruitment tool for Penn State parents looking for legacies) and anyone who loves Penn State sports. You’ll leave feeling a little more proud to be part of Nittany Nation. For hours and information on group and school tours, call 814‑865‑0044 or visit gopsusports.com/museum. Plan a steamy date night or hot night downtown at dantesinc.com/inferno.htm Legends The Penn Stater’s bar and lounge has scenery that can’t be beat – walls adorned with pictures of John Cappelletti, Joe Paterno and other Lion legends, along with facts and tidbits about the team of the years. Best of HappyValley In our last Fun Guide, we asked Nittany Nation what its favorite Penn State bars, restaurants and hotspots were. Thank you to everyone that participated in our survey.
Here are YOUR choices for the Best of Happy Valley… Restaurants
Best Breakfast – The Waffle Shop ‑ This one wasn’t close: The Waffle Shop won in a landslide. We’re not sure which of the three locations you enjoy the most, but Penn Staters can’t get enough of those pancakes. Best Brunch After a Great Weekend – Nittany Lion Inn ‑ One of the better kept weekend secrets, Sunday Brunch at the Nittany Lion Inn features waffles, omelets, carved meats and much more.
uniata River Visitors Guide Size: 2.625(W) x 1.875(h) Colors:cmyk (Oct. 13, 2009) by Apryl Graphic Design. Contact: Best Sparr Place to Enjoy Dinner with a Significant Other – TheApryl Tavern ‑ Sparr (814) 669-1369 Dinner at The Tavern has been a long‑standing Penn State tradition since 1948. Grab a drink at The Adam’s Apple then sit down for one of the best meals Happy Valley has to offer. Best Late‑Night Eats – The Diner ‑ Grilled Stickies are delicious no matter what time you have them. But don’t they seem to have that extra kick at 2am?
Bars
Best Place to Reminisce with Friends – Cafe 210 ‑ This question brought out a wide variety of answers, with Champs, the Skellar, and the Tavern generating lots of responses. But for Happy Valley’s best, we head to Cafe 210 where the iced teas are always flowing. Best Dive Bar – The All‑American Rathskellar ‑ The dive bar that truly embraces its image as...a dive bar. Penn State students, alumni and fans have been meeting at the Skellar since its opening in 1933. Best Kept Secret – Home Delivery Pizza ‑ With 14 beers on tap and another 100+ in bottles, we’re not sure how long Home Delivery will remain a “secret.” Check out their menu online or visit one of their two locations in State College or Bellefonte.

Best Reason to Come Back ‑ Football ‑ Beaver Stadium is the second largest venue in the country...Someone has to fill it, right? Win, lose, or draw (er, 6‑4 game, anyone?) PSU Football will always be the thing that keeps Happy Valley united. Best Reason for Your Child to Choose Penn State ‑ “Best school in the world” ‑ Not quite the academics of the Ivy League. Not quite the weather of the SEC. Not quite the “looks” of Southern California. But our readers say Penn State has a little bit of everything, and that makes a BIG difference in creating a great university. Best Reason to Retire Here: Makes you feel younger…it really is “Happy Valley” ‑ Want to feel young again? Come back to Happy Valley and settle here. Our readers say we have the feel of a big city, with a fraction of the crime and worries. Biggest Topic of Discussion – JoePa and Football ‑ When is he going to retire? Does he still have it? Who’s going to take over when he leaves? There’s only one man that can gener‑ ate that kind of intense debate.
Must‑Do Attraction Each Time You Visit ‑ The Creamery ‑ Have you ever seen the line on a busy weekend? The Creamery estimates it sells 4,000 cones on a home football weekend. Thousands of Penn Staters make the Creamery their “must‑do” each time they come back to Happy Valley. Best Place to Take Your Kid – The Creamery ‑ Kids…Adults…it doesn’t really matter. Who doesn’t love The Creamery? Best Golf Course – PSU Blue/White Courses ‑ Playing from the Lion Tees on the Blue Course measures a whopping 7,228 yards. We don’t recommend that route for the weekend duffer. Best Place for PSU Gear – Lions Pride ‑ Let’s face it, you can never have too much blue and white gear. Lions Pride on College Ave. will help you get ready for the big game, no matter what season it is. Best Photo Op ‑ The Lion Shrine ‑ Rumor has it that the Lion Shrine is the second‑most photographed site in Pennsylvania behind the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia. Photos with the Lion on football or graduation weekends are well worth the wait.
Most Emotional PSU Moment – Oct. 8, 2005 Tamba Hali sacks Troy Smith ‑ Do you remem‑ ber where you were when Scott Paxson picked up the loose ball with a minute and a half left? 109,839 packed Beaver Stadium that night to celebrate Penn State’s “We’re Back” victory over the Buckeyes.
Lodging
Best Hotel – Nittany Lion Inn ‑ Romantic getaways, football roadtrips, or weekend golfing packages...The Nittany Lion Inn has you covered. It has certainly become one of Happy Valley’s most recognizable landmarks.

Get a group of friends together to split a Topper and watch the game. Champs has 26 beers on tap, so it shouldn’t be hard to find something to agree on.
Champs
1611 North Atherton Street State College, PA 16803 814‑238‑7788 champssportsgrill.net Our Food Pick: The Palestra – Philly might be three hours away, but who says you can’t get a good cheese steak? The Palestra is piled high with steak and topped with onions, cheese, and red sauce on a fresh, delicious roll. You’ll feel like you’re eating on Broad Street. Our Drink Pick: The Table Topper – An 80 oz. beer tube: What could be better than that?

Bill Pickle’s Tap Room 106 South Allen Street State College, PA 16801 814‑272‑1172 hotelstatecollege.com
Our Food Pick: Peanut Butter Wings – Don’t knock it ‘til you try it. Pickle’s blends two varieties of BBQ sauce, original spices, and peanut butter into their wing sauce. “Hot” has definitely has a spicy kick to it, but “mild” will bring out the peanut butter flavor. Our Drink Pick: Lynchburg Lemonades – Tuesday nights at Pickle’s means “Country Crossover” night. Bring your cowboy hat and favorite boots and enjoy a $2 Lynchburg Lemonade. The open windows over‑looking Allen Street always provide great sight‑seeing.
Café 210
210 West College Avenue
State College, PA 16801 814‑237‑3449 cafe210.com Our Food Pick: Skillet Fries ‑ Café 210’s Skillet Fries should be in their own major food group. The crispy fries are topped with three cheeses, tomatoes, onions, sour cream, and bacon. Is your mouth watering yet? It should be. Our Drink Pick: Iced Teas – With 12 different flavors, it’s hard to go wrong. Café 210 has iced teas named Long Beach, Long Island, and South Beach. So, you can basically travel across the country without ever leaving Happy Valley.
Mad Mex
240 South Pugh Street State College, PA 16801 814‑272‑5656 madmex.com Our Food Pick: The Mad Mex Burrito – It’s not fancy, but it’s done right. Start by choosing your style of tortilla, then make the always‑tough decision of steak, chicken, shrimp, portabella mushroom, or marinated tofu. The chef will pile on Mexican rice, black beans, and Monterey Jack cheese. You’ll feel like you just arrived in Tijuana. Our Drink Pick: Margaritas – “Frozen or on‑the‑rocks?” Those are the most popular words spoken at Mad Mex. Bartenders whip up dozens of raspberry, strawberry, kiwi, and mango margaritas each day. Love tequila? Try an original recipe on‑the‑rocks for a smooth afternoon treat.
Inferno
340 East College Avenue State College, PA 16801 814‑237‑5718 dantesinc.com/inferno Our Food Pick: Inferno Pizza – It’s not called Inferno for nothing: This place is hot. The Inferno Pizza is a meat lover’s dream with prosciutto, pepperoni, salami, and sausage. It’s topped with vodka sauce and fresh fontina cheese. You won’t want to share. Our Drink Pick: SinS – Inferno has seven SinS, but trust us, they aren’t deadly. Sit back and enjoy a Lust, Envy, Seduction, Desire, Greed, Passion, or Tease. Each one combines blueberry, raspberry, and orange vodka in a delicious blend with other mixers.

Hidden in Happy Valley By Colleen Hanrahan Happy Valley is loaded with exciting attractions, great places to shop, and delicious restaurants to try. But sometimes, businesses can slip under‑the‑radar in the commotion of a big weekend. Next time you’re in town, make sure to check out these fine gems that are hidden in Happy Valley. The Nittany Quill – With spring graduation on the horizon, The Nittany Quill is a great place to pick up a gift for your soon‑to‑be graduate. Nittany Quill specializes in custom calligraphy for all occasions: from wedding invitations to baby announcements and memory books. The owner, Joy Rodgers‑Mernin, also offers special consultations for brides‑to‑be on invitations, save‑the‑date cards, and shower notifications. Stop by the store at 111 S. Fraser Street to see their work. India Pavilion – Located in Calder Alley behind The Tavern, India Pavilion sometimes gets lost in the bustle of Downtown State College. India Pavilion offers a welcomed break from your typical dinner menu. The vegetarian selections are extensive, and you can get anything you order with a selection of sauces. Try the “spicy” if you’re feeling daring. For lunch, stop by the all‑you‑can‑eat buffet and spend less than $10 for a terrific meal. Webster’s on Aaron – Webster’s Bookstore Café on Allen Street has been a downtown staple for over a decade, but what about Webster’s Café on Aaron Drive? Owner Elaine Meder‑Wilgus and her
India Pavilion husband Bill opened the second location in 2007. The two cafes offer the same delicious fare: scrumptious soups, salads, and quiche. Different than the downtown location, Webster’s on Aaron is BYOB – bring your own books. The Way Fruit Farm – This farm in Port Matilda has all the fresh fruit and vegetables you’ll need to create that perfect summer salad, from strawberries to peaches to sweet corn. The beginning of Way Fruit Farm dates back five‑generations to 1875, and is now operated by Brooks and Sharon Way. When football season rolls around, don’t forget to visit them for their Fall Festival ‑ a great time for kids especially. Seven Mountain Wine Cellars – Looking for a different kind of date night? Instead of dinner and a movie, go to Seven Mountain for a wine tasting. Located off Route 322 in Spring Mills, Seven Mountains offers a tremendous variety of wines to keep your taste buds guessing. Surprise your significant other with a tour, including a look at the 4,000 square foot winery, the production area, and the wine cave. Amazing Laser Tag (What‑A‑Blast) – Quick… Which business has been voted “best amusement place in State College” for the past two years? Amazing Laser Tag (What‑A‑Blast) is a fun‑filled attraction for kids, college students, or families. The Sowers Street location features a 2,400 square foot arena ‑ blacklit with ramps, stairs, sniper spots, mazes, and mirrors. You can even bring in your own music!

2010 PSU Football Preview
On September 11, Penn State will attempt to do something it hasn’t done in a long, long time: Beat a team with a number 1 next to it. The early season clash with top‑ranked Alabama will highlight the Nittany Lions 2010 schedule. Here’s how Joe Paterno’s team is looking as he enters his 45th season as head coach.
Players to Watch
In his two seasons as Penn State’s starting quarterback, Daryll Clark went 22‑4 and set the school’s career touchdown record. His successor has some big shoes to fill. Sophomore Kevin Newsome will enter the 2010 season as the favorite to take over. As a true freshman in 2009, Newsome went 8‑for‑11 for 66 yards (72.7%). He rushed for 95 yards on 20 carries and scored two touchdowns in second‑string duty.
Joining Newsome in the quarterback discussion is former walk‑on Matt McGloin, and freshmen quarterbacks Robert Bolden and Paul Jones. Jones is a 6‑3 pocket‑passer from Sto‑Rox High School, and Bolden is a speedy 6‑4 quarterback from Michigan. It will be interesting to see which direction Jay Paterno and the rest of the coaching staff decide to go. Senior Evan Royster will be back for his third season as Penn State’s starting tailback. Royster rushed for 1,169 yards in 2009, and was named first team All‑Big Ten. Entering the 2010 season, he needs 481 yards to break Curt Warner’s school record of 3,398 career rushing yards. Penn State will have arguably the best running back tandem in the Big Ten, and possibly one of the nation’s best, with senior Stephfon Green joining Royster in the backfield. Green is

lightning quick, and a great compliment to Royster’s power running. And don’t sleep on sophomore Curtis Dukes and four‑star freshman Silas Redd.
Games to Watch
In 2010, Penn State will be the first team in college football history to face three BCS bowl game winners from the previous season (Alabama, Iowa, and Ohio State). Here are the games that should be circled on your calendar as the Nittany Lions march towards a Big Ten title: After what should be an easy opener against Youngstown State, the Nittany Lions will head to Tuscaloosa, Ala. for the first time in 20 years. The Crimson Tide leads the all‑time series 8‑5, including a 14‑7 victory in the Sugar Bowl for the 1979 National Championship. Alabama is coming off a 14‑0 season and a BCS Championship victory over Texas. The Tide returns Heisman Trophy‑winning running back Mark Ingram and fifth‑year senior quarterback Greg McElroy. Alabama defeated six ranked teams last season, and hasn’t lost at home in its last 14 games in Bryant‑Denny Stadium.
Looking Ahead ✔ Finished 11‑2 Last Season (No. 8 in Coaches poll, No. 9 in AP) ✔ Record of 51‑13 (79.7) since the start of the 2005 season ✔ Returns 37 Letterwinners, Including 13 Starters (7 Offense, 5 Defense, 1 Specialist) ✔ Will Play 3 BCS Game Winners from Last Season (Ala., OSU, and Iowa) ✔ Must Replace QB, all 3 LB’s, and Punter ✔ Evan Royster Needs 481 Yards to Break PSU Career Rushing Record ✔ Royster and Stefen Wisniewski are Returning First‑Team All‑Big Ten Selections.
Is this the year? Penn State heads to Kinnick Stadium on October 2 for an early Big Ten clash with the pesky Iowa Hawkeyes. Iowa ended Penn State’s perfect season in 2008, and overcame a fourth quarter deficit to stun the fifth‑ranked Nittany Lions in 2009. The Hawkeyes have won seven out of the last eight against Penn State. Is this the year the Blue and White can turn its luck around? Home sweet home. Penn State’s Homecoming game is set for October 9 against Illinois. The Nittany Lions hold a 15‑2 advantage in the all‑time series against the boys in orange. Penn State is 39‑5 on Homecoming under Joe Paterno. Payback: Round 3? After suffering nine consecutive losses to the Michigan Wolverines, the tide has certainly turned in the Nittany Lions favor. In their last two contests, Penn State has defeated Michigan by an average margin of 28 points per game. Will the third time remain a charm? In a season with a mediocre (at best) home football schedule, this pre‑Halloween slugfest has the potential to be a nighttime/White Out affair. Beaver Stadium and Ohio Stadium – two of the largest, loudest venues in the country. Normally, playing on the road is a very daunting task, but maybe not so much in this series. The road team has won the last three games, and the Nittany Lions will head to Columbus on November 13. Can the Penn State defense slow down Ohio State’s thrilling quarterback, Terrelle Pryor? Roadtrip! In exchange for a nice payday, Indiana has agreed to move its November 20 home game from Bloomington to FedEx Field in Washington DC. This game should be a treat for the 40,000+ Penn State alumni in the DC‑MD‑VA region. FedEx Field has a capacity of 91,704. It’s safe to say there will be a lot of blue and white in those seats.
Beaver Stadium: Fast Facts ✔ Moved to its Current Location in 1960 ✔ First Game: 20‑0 Victory over Boston University ✔ Seating Capacity: 107,282 people ✔ Second Largest Stadium in the Country, Behind Michigan Stadium ✔ Third Largest Sports Stadium in the World ✔ Largest Crowd: 110,753 people (Nebraska – 2002) ✔ Named for James A. Beaver ‑ Former Governor and President of the University’s Board of Trustees.

Happy Valley Travel By James Bunting Three hours to Pittsburgh. Three hours to Philadelphia. Four hours to New York City. We know that traveling to and from Happy Valley isn’t always easy. But don’t just pack up the car each time you want to visit Central PA. There are plenty of great ways to get to Penn State, and not all of them involve Route 80.
By Air
University Park Airport may be small, but it’s always busy with business travelers, visitors, and Penn State students traveling to and from home. With direct service to three major metro areas, you can get anywhere from here: Northwest Airlink to and from Detroit United Express to and from Washington/Dulles USAirways Express to and from Philadelphia Short‑ and long‑term parking is available in secure lots at a very reasonable price. Only a short drive from Downtown State College, you can be on the Penn State campus just minutes after the wheels touch the ground. For more information, including driving direc‑ tions, fares, and more, visit the University Park Airport Web site at universityparkairport.com. **Don’t forget: Harrisburg International Airport is only an hour away. HIA serves six airlines and offers nonstop flights to 13 destinations.
By Land
State College’s Greyhound station is conveniently on the west side of campus, at 152 N. Atherton Street. Busses leave for travel hubs like Harrisburg and Pittsburgh multiple times each day. Traveling on a budget? Greyhound is a cheap, efficient method of weekend transportation. Whether you’re looking for a quick daytrip, or a weeklong excursion, Fullington Trailways has you covered. Fullington specializes in exciting trips to places like Atlantic City, Niagara Falls, and Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. Keep Fullington in mind during football season, when shuttles run to Altoona and the surrounding areas. Visit fullingtontours.com for more information. **Don’t forget: State College doesn’t have a train station, but it’s still easy to get to Happy Valley via the rail. Amtrak has train stations in Altoona, Lewistown, and Huntingdon – all a short trek from Penn State.
