Non-profits Bringing Fun and Community to Happy Valley The State Theatre

Thanks to a generous gift from community members and a group of dedicated volunteers, The State Theatre reopened in 2006 after a five-year hiatus, breathing new life into Happy Valley’s arts and culture, indie music and film scenes. Enjoy major musical acts, comedians, musicals and plays in the theatre’s intimate setting, and check out the hottest indie films making the rounds in bigger cities. Upcoming shows include the Flamenco Dance Theatre Company, the Second Annual Happy Valley’s Got Talent: A Fundraiser for the Tides Program, and The Royal Gilberts. For tickets and a full schedule of events, call the box office at 814-272-0606 or visit statetickets.org.

Discovery Space of Central PA

A hands-on children’s science museum located in downtown State College, Discovery Space is a great place for fun for the whole family. With 4,000 square feet of interactive exhibits, Discovery Space was designed to stimulate curiosity and spark imagination as children learn about the world around them. Learn more about Discovery Space at mydiscoveryspace.org.

Mount Nittany Conservancy

With nearly nine miles of volunteer-maintained trails and scenic views, Mt. Nittany offers a unique setting for local recreation. Since 1981, the Mount Nittany Conservancy has built and continued to maintain trails and overlooks on Mt. Nittany, allowing for generations of “Centre Countians, Penn Staters and other lovers of the outdoors” to enjoy all the mountain has to offer. In 2011, the Mount Nittany Conservancy marked 30 years of keeping the Mountain ‘green and growing’. To learn more and download a trails map, visit www.mtnittany.org.

The Palmer Museum of Art

A gem in our small town, The Palmer boasts free admission and dozens of special events and exhibits each year. The museum offers an ever-changing display of exhibitions, in addition to its permanent collection. The Palmer has 11 galleries, a 150-seat auditorium, and an outdoor sculpture garden. Current exhibitions include Hogarth Restored and Painting the People: Images of American Life from the Maimon Collection. Visit www.palmermuseum.psu.edu to check out the exhibition calendar and learn about special events.

Happy Valley’s Best Kept Secrets Everyone knows that Beaver Stadium is the best place to spend a Saturday during the fall in Happy Valley, and that the early bird catches the worm (and avoids long lines!) at the Waffle Shop on weekends. But for the inside scoop on some lesser known spots and best-kept secrets, look no further than this list. Penn State Berkey Creamery

Best Brunch After a Great Weekend – Nittany Lion Inn

Best Dive Bar – The All-American Rathskeller

Best Place to Enjoy Dinner with a Significant Other – The Tavern

Best Kept Bar Secret – Home Delivery Pizza

One of the better kept weekend secrets, Sunday Brunch at the Nittany Lion Inn features waffles, omelets, carved meats and much more. www.nittanylioninn.psu.edu

Dinner at The Tavern has been a long-standing Penn State tradition since 1948. Grab a drink at The Adam’s Apple then sit down for one of the best meals Happy Valley has to offer. www.thetavern.com

Best Late-Night Eats – The Diner

Grilled Stickies are delicious no matter what time you have them. But don’t they seem to be that much better at 2am? www.thediner. statecollege.com

10

The dive bar that truly embraces its image as...a dive bar. Penn State students, alumni and fans have been meeting at the Skellar since its opening in 1933. www.site.theskeller.com

With 14 beers on tap and another 100+ in bottles, we’re not sure how long Home Delivery will remain a “secret.” Check out their menu online or visit one of their two locations in State College or Bellefonte. www.homedeliverypizza.net

Best Hotel – Nittany Lion Inn

Romantic getaways, football road trips or weekend golfing packages...the Nittany Lion Inn has you covered. It has certainly become

one of Happy Valley’s most recognizable landmarks. www.nittanylioninn.psu.edu

Best B&B – Carnegie Inn & Spa

Three miles away from campus and just beyond the 17th green of the Toftrees Golf Course lies the beautiful Carnegie House. Wine and dine at one of the area’s best restaurants, which was recently awarded Best Fine Dining and Best Wait Service by State College Magazine. www.carnegiehouse.com Carnegie Inn & Spa

Kids, adults, it doesn’t really matter. Who doesn’t love The Creamery? www.creamery.psu.edu

Best Place for PSU Gear – Lions Pride

Let’s face it, you can never have too much blue and white gear. Lions Pride on College Ave. will help you get ready for the big game, no matter what season it is. www.lions-pride.com

Best Golf Course – PSU Blue/White Courses

Playing from the Lion Tees on the Blue Course measures a whopping 7,228 yards. We don’t recommend that route for the weekend duffer however. www.pennstategolfcourses.com

Best Photo Op - The Lion Shrine

Rumor has it that the Lion Shrine is the second-most photographed site in Pennsylvania behind the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia. Photos with the Lion on football or graduation weekends are well worth the wait.

Host a Tasty Event with a Happy Valley Caterer With so many events – weddings, graduation parties, holiday parties and of course tailgates – happening throughout the year in Happy Valley, it’s almost a given that you will need to find a good caterer at some point. Luckily, there are numerous great options in the area.

Hoag’s Catering at Celebration Hall

Harrison’s Wine Grill and Catering

It’s impossible to talk about catering in State College without mentioning Harrison’s Wine Grill and Catering, which has swept the “Best Catering” category in State College Magazine’s Best of State College poll every year since 2005. Although delivered lunches are their most popular catered meal, the professional staff at Harrison’s can help create the perfect event – whether a party for 50 people, the perfect tailgate, a memorable wedding reception or anything in between. Harrison’s provides options for meal pick-up as well as full menus with set-up and professional service. Check out sample menus online at www.harrisonsmenu.com. In addition to delicious, award-winning food, Harrison’s also is conscientious about the environment. They have been making strides to research and convert to green, eco-friendly options for catering disposables and are participating with Penn State’s Campus Sustainability Office project for green caterers.

Hoag’s Catering at Celebration Hall

Owned and operated by the Moerschbacher family for over 50 years, Hoag’s Catering at Celebration Hall specializes in off-site catering, party rentals and on-site events at their State College facility, which can accommodate groups of up to 250. Hoag’s offers several wedding packages at Celebration Hall, as well as enhancements to each, allowing couples to create their perfect day. Check out Hoag’s packages at www.hoagscatering.com. Sweet Innovations by Rachel, a subsidiary of Hoag’s catering, offers customized wedding cakes, groom’s cakes, cookie displays, birthday cakes, cupcakes and much more.

16

Carvers Deli & Barbecue

Carvers Deli & Barbecue cooks their barbecue using a traditional “low and slow” method where meats are cooked at low temperatures for long periods of time to produce extremely moist, succulent meats. Carvers catering menu features barbecue choices including pulled pork sandwiches, applewood smoked chicken, pork ribs and brisket, as well as deli sandwiches, salads and soups. In addition, customers have the option of building their own sandwich and/or wrap trays. To help create the perfect tailgate, Carvers offers several packages that include pulled pork and beef barbecue sandwiches, wings, ribs, chicken, soup, chili and sides. A unique feature of Carvers tailgate packages is that customers can choose to get their ribs finished or unfinished. Finished ribs are sauced and ready to eat, while unfinished ribs are for those parties who would like to heat the ribs on their grill and then apply the sauce. Carvers has a special tailgate menu at www.carversdeliandbbq.com.

Doan’s Bones Barbecue

To create a tailgate or other event that will be the envy of all those nearby, Doan’s Bones Barbecue offers a mobile wood-fired pizza oven. Event attendees can create their own pizza, choosing their own toppings and watching as it bakes in minutes. Doan’s Bones also offers baby back ribs, barbecued chicken, baked ham, roasted portabellas and other entrée options as well as a large array of sides. Specializing in custom catering, Doan’s Bones strives to create personalized menus to perfectly fit any occasion. Check out Doan’s Bones at www.doansbones.com.

All Natural Fun: Happy Valley Activities in the Great Outdoors Happy Valley is a great place to spend some quality time in the great outdoors, no matter what the season or the temperature. There are plenty of things to do, from hiking and bike rides, to hot air balloon rides and old-fashioned carriage rides.

Bike Trails State College and its surrounding areas have numerous biking paths that will lead you to a variety of locations and enjoyable events for you and your whole family. If you don’t have a bike of your own, don’t fret; simply head over to The Bicycle Shop on West College Ave. to rent one from there. For a low key bike ride, there are many bike path loops that will take you around The Penn State University Campus and the surrounding areas, including The Bellefonte Central Bike Trail (1.3 miles) and The Park Hills Bike Path Loop (about 5.3 miles). For the more adventurous type, there are mountain bike trails in the area. Some are a bit more challenging than others, and require experienced riders, so check either The Bicycle Shop at thebicycleshopinc.com or The Centre Region Bicycle Coalition at centrebike.org for more information. You can also grab your bike on Fridays and ride into downtown State College to check out the Farmers’ market during the summer and fall. It is located at Locust Lane and begins at 11:30 am.
