A Few of My Favorite Things One of my favorite things about living here is how special the fall season is. Sure, back to school brings more downtown traffic and longer lines at our favorite stores and restaurants, but that’s nothing compared to the energy and electricity of an autumn day in Happy Valley. You might think it’s all about football--and certainly it’s a big part. The Nittany Nation is here in full force on football weekends, like an enormous family reunion, for tailgating, touring campus and town, and cheering on the Lions. But that’s only the beginning. Fall is the best time for outdoor activities, like kayaking, biking, hiking and more. Fall also kicks off a new season for Center for the Performing Arts, bringing, big amazing shows to stages right here in our little town. Farmers’ markets continue with fall harvest fruits and veggies, and opportunities to stock up on homemade jellies, jams, pickles, and relishes. Breweries and wineries offer relaxing atmospheres and locally-made products. There’s so much to experience, in such a short time. Get out, have fun and enjoy it while it lasts!

Happy Valley: Come See What’s New in Town! We’ve Got the Inside Scoop on the Latest Places to Have Fun in Happy Valley By Cara Aungst There are some great new venues, events and activities in the area and in true Happyvalley.com fashion, we’ve put together some perfect combos for a Friday night or weekend day out (we just can’t help ourselves). Check it out!
For the Family
The Penn State Arboretum already featured more than 17,000 plants over 35 wandering acres, ponds with lily pads, fountains, and always-free admission. But this spring’s addition of their children’s garden has rendered it utterly magical. First, there’s the name, Childhood’s Gate, taken from Penn State’s Lewis Pattee’s poem: When we stood at childhood’s gate /Shapeless in the hands of fate/Thou didst mold us, dear old State/ Dear old State, dear old State. Then, there’s the garden itself. We went on a hot afternoon and the kids were thrilled with the limestone cave (where they were encouraged to create chalk cave drawings) and wading path they could follow around the garden, ankle deep in water. Everything is larger than life in this area of the arboretum, from the giant climbable caterpillar to the flowerbeds and water pump where kids can help water flowers to their hearts’ delight. Aptly called a place to ‘wander and wonder,’ this destination is close and free, so you have time to just be and explore. When you’re done, treat the kids to one of the eateries on College Avenue, like Qdoba, where they can custom pick the toppings for their burrito (208 W. College Ave, 814861-3288) or Rotelli with the best Italian food in town. I mean, how can you possibly go wrong with pizza? (www. Rotellistatecollege.com, 250 E. Calder Way, 814-238-846)
For the Grown-Ups
Big Spring Distillery is big news! Any place whose website starts with a tall tale of a local statesman with a questionable past and shady diplomacy skill already has my full attention, but Big Spring Distillery has more than that: a boutique distillery located in a match factory building in the heart of Bellefonte that uses “Pennsylvania’s best tasting water” and the finest ingredients from local farmers to craft something truly remarkable. Open Thursday-Sunday, stop in for a taste or tour. Or both. (www.bigspringspirits. com, 198 Match Factory Place, Bellefonte; 814-3534478). While you are in Bellefonte, grab a bite at The Gamble Mill. On Thursdays, enjoy out-of-this-world burgers for 6
only $5, and $3 pints. The other days are just as tasty. (gamblemill.com, 160 Dunlap Street Bellefonte; 814-3557764)
For the Adventurers
Tussey Mountain has mastered summertime fun with their Go Karts, mini golf, WingFest, and family-friendly Movies on the Mountain. Just one more reason to love it is the new zipline! You have to be between 80-260 pounds to ride, which eliminated my younger daredevils, but fun is to be had for the older tween and up! It’s a twinline, so get a friend to come with you and see Happy Valley as you’ve never seen it before! (www.tusseymountain.com, 301 Bear Mountain Rd., Boalsburg). When you’re done at Tussey, head over to Kelly’s in Boalsburg. Get steak or seafood, which they’re well known for, or keep with it casual with one of their signature burgers, gyros or Reubens enjoyed in their outdoor dining area.
Oh, the Places You’ll Go! How about Happy Valley? Top 10 Reasons Why You’ll Keep Coming Back to Penn State for a Lifetime by Diana Walker Griffith “Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory.” ~ Dr. Seuss For all the places you could go for your undergraduate education, maybe the best college for you is where you can make happy memories. College ranking sites (like http://colleges.findthebest. com/l/3741/Pennsylvania-State-University-PSU) will tell you Penn State is 37 out of 180 among liberal arts colleges, 93 out of 650 colleges, has a high graduation rate and so on. Penn State is a great and well respected school. So what are the “happy” reasons to choose Penn State, besides being one of the best schools for Big Ten football and Greek life? What matters most to some may not matter as much to others, but the bottom line is this: for the next four-plus years, the college you pick is going to be your first home away from home. How about choosing a school because it’s a place you want to live, come back to, and maybe even stay? Those of us who chose Penn State feel so lucky to have experienced life in Happy Valley that we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Penn State to you. I asked Penn State alumnae Janet Mazur Cavano and M.A. Mulligan, who were my classmates in the journalism program in the School of Communications and co-writers on The Daily Collegian, how going to school in Happy Valley met and even exceeded their expectations. Keep in mind, we went to Penn State about 30 years ago, so we may be the same age as your parents. While a lot has changed in that time, the really important advantages to attending Penn State haven’t. Which is why we STILL are Penn State. Though we left it behind to pursue our careers, we’ve never altogether left it behind. Here are our 10 best reasons why Happy Valley is the place to be: 1. It’s close to home for students from Pennsylvania As a townie, Penn State was home for me. Although I considered going out of state, I’m glad I stayed for the outstanding journalism program Penn State offers. Janet and M.A. came to University Park from branch campuses in Erie and Allentown, respectively. 2. The people you see and the places you hang out become your second family
Despite being a large university, Penn State offers a multitude of opportunities to connect with like-minded students. For us, it was The Daily Collegian, which became our second home on campus. M.A. also found that camaraderie with her fellow residents at Jordan Hall. 3. Penn State is an academic utopia—so much to choose from! All three of us took classes that changed our view of the world, with professors who had a lasting influence on our skills. “It was a mind-expanding experience,” says Janet. “Having grown up in a depressed steel town near Pittsburgh, I am still astounded by the range of courses offered. “You want to learn outdoor living skills--there’s a phys. ed class that culminates in a weekend camping trip. You’re interested in foreign films -- no problem. If a course in Shakespeare is required for your major--you’ll be placed in a tiny seminar room with a renowned scholar leading you through the Riverside Shakespeare. You’ve never swam in — continues on page 10

10 Reasons to Come Back to Penn State — continued from page 8
an Olympic-sized pool--basic lifesaving classes are taught in the natatorium. “Considering a career in journalism? The Daily Collegian is a superb way to test the waters.” “The Collegian created kind of a total immersion experience,” adds M.A. Indeed, The Collegian was our first paying job in journalism. And I might add, is ranked #5 out of 20 colleges for best college newspaper. Majoring in journalism at Penn State gave me the skills and training I needed to excel throughout my career. 4. So many traditions you can adopt as your own “While it may have been isolated geographically, there was no shortage of things to do and traditions to maintain,” says Janet—”grilled stickies at The Penn State Diner, coffee at The Corner room, hanging out on ‘The Wall,’ sipping Rolling Rocks at the Rathskeller on Thursday nights while an acoustic duo played Beatles hits. All good stuff that makes me smile.” Not to mention the superb ice cream at The Creamery! 5. Penn State is as diverse as it is big “I embraced it all with a vengeance,” Janet says. “I took a phys. ed. class every tri-mester, just to learn something new and to keep fit. I filled my non-major requirements with courses like Asian philosophy or other religions. I made it a point to meet students from a range of backgrounds, versus the working class kids from my high school and neighborhood. Such are the advantages of a large university-- the exposure to a range of ideas, philosophies, cultures and people. They really shaped my world view and formed who I am today.”
6. The natural beauty of Happy Valley will astound you Breathe in the fresh mountain air and look at the green acres all around you. Everywhere you look -- land spreading out far and wide, mountains rising majestically above the rolling hills and valleys. During the summer months, students flock to the farmers‘ market in downtown State College to buy from the Amish and other local farmers. The ways you can enjoy Happy Valley’s natural beauty are as abundant as the nightlife in downtown State College. And to be a true Penn Stater, you need to climb Mt. Nittany at least once. 7. Happy Valley is a mecca for arts and culture There’s so much more to Penn State than football and partying, with outstanding performance venues that include the Center for the Performing Arts at Penn State, the Bryce Jordan Center, The State Theatre, and Pennsylvania Centre Stage. Every year in July, Happy Valley is also home to the nationally recognized Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts, also affectionately known as the Arts Festival or simply, Arts Fest. From May through August, Happy Valley is the place to be for a summer of peace, love and music. 8. It can be affordable Admittedly, Penn State is expensive--the second most expensive in-state tuition among public universities in the nation--although Money magazine ranked it 177 on the best colleges for your money. Penn State President Eric Barron has pledged to make tuition more affordable. M.A. saved money by living at home with her parents and attending a branch campus for two years. “I was determined to make it work,” she says, “and I did.” 9. You start relationships that can last a lifetime We all married Penn Staters and met wonderful people who have become lifelong friends. “After 30 years or so, I stumbled upon several dozen old Collegian colleagues on Facebook,” says M.A., “and was thrilled to find that each of them had grown into people I’d still love to have as neighbors or coworkers: wise, caring, and funny!” 10. You’ll want to come back year after year Though M.A. says her time at University Park was much too short, “State College feels like home for me when I visit each July for the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts, which I’ve attended each year since 1977.” She and her husband have two kids who are now in their 20s. “They have gone to the Arts Festival with us every year of their lives, and refuse to miss it even now.” And those lifelong friends you make? They’ll be back, too.

The Beginning of a New Era, the FrankLion Era Nittany Nation Lays the Foundation for a New Season of Success By Eric Herrold Just as the ball began to drop in Times Square, almost eerily in sync, so did the Bill O’Brien era for Dear Old State. After a brief push to remain within the confines of conformability (our nod to LJ) and a classic one-night stand with something called the “Golden Era,” all of Nittany Nation suddenly found ourselves tracking a flight out of Nashville, Tenn. Through the eyes of a child, we watched with guarded heart as James Franklin give his first, official, “WE ARE” from the other side of the tarmac fence. The self-proclaimed “Pennsylvania Kid with a Penn State Heart” hit the ground running faster than a speeding bullet. We saw him dance at the THON and crisscross the Mid-Atlantic shaking hands and kissing Penn State babies. He brought the team “selfie” front and center to State College. He paid homage and respect to a proud past and reminded us all, that WE ARE….Family! In short, the man raised the Penn State flag high, and “Dominate the State” became an instant battle cry. As the rest of us went about our daily winter grind, James Franklin spent the off season bringing back the “cool” to Happy Valley! All of which leads us to where we are today. Standing at the cusp of a new beginning...the FrankLion Era! Early preseason polls have pegged the 2014 Nittany Lions to finish anywhere from within the top 25 to outside of the top 50. In other words, no one truly knows what to expect. With a year of hard-nosed football under his belt, sophomore QB and reigning Big 10 Conference Freshman of the Year Christian Hackenberg sits at the threshold of stardom. It’s no stretch to say that Hack has all the tools to become one of the very best to ever don the classic, plain jersey that defines Penn State. The challenge will be to overcome the lack of depth along the O-line and to replace the production that Allen Robinson took with him to the NFL. In order combat and offset those concerns, new Offensive Coordinator John Donovan will have to earn his paycheck for sure. Lucky for him, the Nittany Lions have their own version of “The Four Horsemen,” the tight ends. “Outlaw” 10
Jesse James has been labeled a “freak” on the football field, and for all the right reasons. Couple him with Kyle Carter, and you have a one-two-punch that very few can rival in college football. As if that was not enough, Adam Breneman came on strong, hauling in a touchdown in each of the final three games, and Brent Wilkerson is fully healthy after nagging injuries his first two years in State College. Some summer buzz was generated this summer when highly-touted freshman Mike Gesicki landed in Happy Valley. Word is, his strength and athleticism is already enough to warrant playing time. With “The Anchor” Donovan Smith entrenched as the only returning starter on the offensive line, and a hodgepodge of youth and inexperience to fill in the missing pieces, these four and possibly five tight ends will be leaned on heavily to keep the pressure off our young QB and give him plenty of options in the short passing game. Like Breneman, Geno Lewis came on strong toward the ends of last season. The sophomore wide receiver appears ready to take his game to the next level, as well as mentor a group of highly touted freshmen waiting in the wings. Running back continues to be a strength. The elusiveness of Bill Belton and the sheer power and guts of Zack Zwinack should be a force to be reckoned with. Akeel Lynch is patiently waiting in the wings and completes a backfield that has been commonly referred to as the “ThreeHeaded Monster.” On defense, the Nittany Lions seem poised to bounce back after a somewhat off year last season. Since the hire of James Franklin and Defensive Coordinator Bob Shoop, the word we have continued to hear is “aggressive”, and it has been welcomed by all with open arms. Sean “Coach Chaos” Spencer takes over for longtime D-line Coach Larry Johnson, and has experience and potential chomping at the bit. Austin Johnson is slated to take over in the middle with possible “X Factor” Anthony Zettel moving from end to tackle beside him. Deion Barnes is looking to reestablish his freshman dominance at one end with C.J. Olaniyan manning the other. At linebacker, Mike Hull takes over the middle and has established himself as the unquestioned leader of the defense. Nyeem Wartman, Brandon Bell and Gary Wooten look to battle it out on the outside. True freshman Troy Reeder and Jason Cabinda will be looked upon to add depth to a thin group and both look ready to be thrown into the fire early on. The defensive backfield is loaded and

Sept. 6 - AKRON Sept. 13 at *Rutgers Sept. 20 UMASS Sept. 27 - NORTHWESTERN features four-year starter Adrian Amos at safety and Jordan Lucas as a shutdown corner. Both have been mentioned as possible candidates to move down to the “Star” linebacker spot to help offset the depth issue. Expect both to be a show of force this year! A welcome change that came along with the new staff was a complete shakeup to the special teams. Sam Ficken returns for one last hurrah and it’s been said he has benefitted from the “in your face” style that Franklin has implemented. Special Teams Coach Charles Huff has vowed to add speed to the coverage units. Look for freshman DeAndre Thompkins to make an immediate impact in the return game. All in all, there is a ton to feel optimistic about this season. The energy and excitement that Franklin and staff brought with them to Happy Valley has been a welcome and well-deserved change over the doom and gloom predictions that were forced upon us. Whether that translates to seven wins or 10, the first glimpse of light has begun to shimmer. Success this year truly depends upon the ability to build chemistry and bring all the fresh faces up to speed. Whether that begins in Dublin right away or takes a few games to develop, make no mistake, the 2014 Penn State Nittany Lions will be remembered for laying the foundation to a new era of success! Eric was born in State College and has spent a lifetime calling Happy Valley his “home away from home”. His Penn State fan page, Nittany Nation, was started in January and is widely recognized for its level of fun and participation with the fans, alumni, and both past and present players of Penn State football.

A Parent’s Survival Guide to the Best of the Blue and White Hit Up Happy Valley’s Hottest Spots When Dropping Off Your Penn Stater It’s finally here: the weekend you’ve been waiting for…or dreading, depending on feelings about sending your student off to college. Happy or sad, we promise it’s the first of many fun weekends you’ll spend in Happy Valley. Here’s our guide to making the most of every visit.
Get some gear.
Your new Penn Stater needs some blue and white in his or her wardrobe, and so do you. Get your Nittany Lion supplies at one of many downtown retailers (we recommend The Family Clothesline or Lions Pride on College Avenue, or the Penn State Bookstore on campus). Don’t listen if they say it’s embarrassing to buy a “Penn State Mom” or “Penn State Dad” shirt. You earned it, and how else can you tell the world? Get a sticker for the back of your car,
too. Your Penn Stater will love it. If you’re planning to be here for the October 25 for the game against Ohio State, it’s Whiteout Weekend – pick up a shirt, too!

If you an afternoon and feel like a nice, long walk, put your smart phone’s GPS on walking mode and check out the on-campus landmarks. First, go to the Nittany Lion Shrine. It’s a well-known rite of passage to get your picture taken there. Then, head over to The Creamery and get a cone. The most popular flavor is vanilla, but there are so many more to choose from! Ultimate Party: Tailgating in Happy Valley Join Your Penn State Family for Seven Reunions this Fall (and Wow Them with this Great Harvest Recipe) By Jonathan Dougherty Despite all the changes Penn State football has experienced over the past two years, the one constant has been the “fan experience,” which for many of us is characterized by the Blue Band’s signature Floating Lion, the ringing of the victory bell, a White Out crowd, swaying to the Alma Mater after a win with 107,000 of our closest friends in Beaver Stadium, and of course, tailgating! For seven Saturdays this fall, the once serene and picturesque pastures surrounding Beaver Stadium turn into the biggest family reunion the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has ever experienced. The Penn State Family knows how to tailgate, and the traditions and atmosphere are #UNRIVALED! Our tailgates are as diverse as our fan base, and our collective game day experiences are engrained as treasured memories of tailgates past and present. My first tailgating experiences date back to my days in elementary school, when on very early Saturday mornings, my dad, two uncles and I would pack a cooler and make the hallowed trek from Wilkes-Barre, Pa. to Happy Valley. As we pulled into the parking fields, my dad would always joke with the attendant about this being the parking for the Grange Fair, and we would set-up shop with a card table, some hoagies, and a few beers (and a soda or two for me). Our tailgates were simple, but as I write this I can almost taste the delicious hoagies we brought from Philadelphia Subs in Wilkes-Barre. As my siblings and I began our college careers at Penn State, our tailgates evolved and included my mom, who was no longer forced to drive carpool for soccer and baseball games. As we parked on the paved lot (a big upgrade from the grassy fields) just a stone’s throw from Beaver Stadium, we would fire up the grill for hamburgers and hot dogs and other typical tailgate fare. But it was still served on those same card tables now with blue and white tablecloths. For the past nine years or so, thanks to dear friends, we’ve upgraded to an RV for our weekly tailgates with all 14
the comforts of home in the middle of a gravel lot not too far from Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. We’ve elevated our menus, too! From made-to-order omelets before those early noon kickoffs to our annual Surf & Turf tailgate, our food selections surely have changed. We said farewell to some old friends and gained some new ones, but the opportunity to continue making memories with family, friends, and fellow Penn State fans remains constant. Under every pop-up tent and RV awning, tailgaters have a favorite go-to recipe that becomes a staple of their meal. For us, the recipe epitomizes the fall and comes from family friends, Bob and Pat Ehlers, of Gettysburg. Pat introduced us to this amazing and quick-to-prepare dessert several years ago, and it has become so popular at our tailgate that it appears on the table with the appetizers and is usually gone before dessert even starts. Caramel Apple Dip 1 container of whipped cream cheese 1 container of Marzetti’s caramel dip (found near the produce aisle of your grocery store) 2-3 Heath Bar candy bars (or several snack size bars), chopped into small pieces Directions: Spread the whipped cream cheese onto a plate. Slightly warm the caramel dip until pourable and spread caramel on top of the cream cheese. Top with Heath Bar pieces. (Note: buy the candy bars and chop them yourself. Some stores sell chopped Heath Bar pieces for baking, but those don’t have the rich chocolate outside found on the actual candy bar!) Serve this delicious Caramel Apple Dip with sliced apples and pears and cinnamon sugar pita chips. Another tip for tailgating: if you plan to slice the apples and pears before you leave home, throw the cut fruit into a Ziploc bag with a good squeeze of lemon juice. The citrus helps the apples and pears from oxidizing and turning brown. This recipe is a crowd pleaser that once served will become a weekly fan request from your fellow tailgaters! If you share, you are sure to be hit with your tailgating neighbors (and it is so easy).

We all have our favorite tailgate traditions and memories, and that is part of what makes the fan experience so special at Dear Old State. When the first cars start to roll in from Routes 81, 26, and 322 and the lines start to form before the parking gates open, the anticipation builds not just for the coming kickoff, but for the family reunion that is certain to take place before, during, and after the game. From setting up your tents and tables and grills and 40” televisions to hoisting the Nittany Lion flag to mark your territory and serve as a beacon for your guests, there is a certain pride that emanates from each Happy Valley tailgate. The aroma of grilled hamburgers and pork ribs, the crackle of a turkey fryer, the swoosh of a bean bag hitting its corn hole target, the crispness of an apple dipped into gooey Caramel Apple Dip, the sounds of Zombie Nation and Fight

On, State, the honking of horns as the Blue Buses make their way up Porter Road, the chants of “We Are” heard from near and far, the Blue Band marching in a sea of Blue and White from TailGREAT in the Bryce Jordan Center to the gates of Beaver Stadium, there is no better place to be on a Saturday in the fall. So, in the shadows of Mount Nittany for seven magnificent autumn Saturdays, we gather for our annual Penn State Family reunions. And we wouldn’t have it any other way. About the Author Jonathan U. The Case for Happy Valley Thinking of Making the Move to Happy Valley? We’ve got Left-Brained and Right-Brained Reasons Why You’ll be Glad You Did! By Harry Zimbler You already know that Happy Valley is a great place to live and visit all year long. From tailgating in the fall to the nationally-acclaimed Arts Fest in the summer, it has a true myriad of activities to be enjoyed. National magazines have celebrated its stress-free, lowcrime lifestyle and high quality of life. Where else can you visit a world-class, futuristic, nanotechnology laboratory and within a 20-minute drive be in the midst of Amish country where the Old Order Plain people live and work (not as tourist attractions but as farmers, cabinet makers, carpenters and more)? You love visiting, and now you’re wondering if this would be a great place to live and raise a family. Before you make that move, you’ll have many questions of course. You want to know about the quality of life including job opportunities, housing options, schools, health care, recreation, and more. The case for a move to Happy Valley. It all starts with a job. State College currently boasts an unemployment rate of 4.8 percent, the lowest in Pennsylvania and far lower than the national number. It used to be said that State College is recession-proof with Penn State University as an economic anchor. The recent (or current depending upon your point of view) recession did have an impact on the region, but it was far less harmful than it was in most other places. While Penn State is still the largest employer in the region, there is a growing, vibrant economy in most other sectors, especially high tech. Even manufacturing is making a comeback in Centre County. Chromatography, nanotechnology, analytics, and statistical instruments are all words heard often in the area. Maybe you want to try your hand at entrepreneurship. No problem. In Happy Valley there is a great deal of help available. The Innovation Park at Penn State houses and administers many programs to help guide and fund start-ups. There’s a business incubator, the Ben Franklin Technology TechCelerator and the Small Business Development Center. The Chamber of Business and Industry 16
provides many services that are helpful to new businesses, including helping locate space and quality employees. Often, Penn State research and technology is licensed, but that’s not the only path to success. Great ideas abound in the region and the expertise to get things off the ground exists. Many of Happy Valley’s businesses sell products worldwide, and Pennsylvania supports one of the strongest export offices in the nation. Where to live? Happy Valley’s housing market offers a full palette of choices, from million dollar signature homes and farmettes to units available for $100,000 or less. Chuck Gambone, Broker at Gambone, Songer & Associates Realty, notes that the real local estate market is on a gentle upswing. “Prices are rising slowly, and the upper end market -- $500,000 and up-- has been strong since January of this year,” he said. He added that this region did not suffer the great losses in equity that were experienced in many other markets. “Lots of things go into a housing decision,” Gambone said. “Good schools, low crime rate, lots of activities for young people and adults, and more. We’ve got all those things. What could be better? It’s a big, small town, [and] a great place to live, raise a family and grow a business.” Will my kid get a quality education? The State College School District is one of the strongest in Pennsylvania; its graduates consistently perform well above the state and national averages. Eighty-eight percent of graduates plan to continue their education and training, most at
top universities. The region is also served with many charter schools, a Catholic grade school and St. Joseph’s Academy high school, and the Delta Program for nontraditional students. The healthcare industry is a major plus for the region, served by Mount Medical Center and Geisinger Health System. In fact, Centre County has been named the third healthiest county in Pennsylvania according to a University of Wisconsin study. Mount Nittany Medical Center has experienced remarkable growth in the past few years, including the building a new emergency and trauma wing and the new Shaner Cancer Center. The system is now comprised of 15 locations throughout the area, including its new neuroscience facility. The Geisinger Medical System, headquartered in Danville, also offers top-quality services in Centre County. Geisinger is a medical center that has been lauded nationally for its business model and high quality of service. Happy Valley is a highly desirable market for the banking industry. “Chances of starting a successful business are better here than most other places,” said Bill Hayes, Chairman, President and CEO of Kish Bank. “There are a lot of banks in State College and when it comes to borrowing money for a business, we all want to lend money, he said. “We aggressively support small businesses.” Hayes believes that there’s more to Happy Valley than many people realize. “The attributes here add up to an intangible ‘pride in place,’” he noted. “There’s something about State College and Happy Valley. You can’t put your finger on it. It’s the natural beauty and the quality of the people who live here.” Betsy Howell, executive director of the Central Pennsylvania Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, agrees. “This is a welcoming area. Our location in the Mid-Atlantic is an advantage. If you can’t find something to do here, something you like, you probably haven’t looked hard enough. There is so much going on at any one time, you’re sure to find what you’re looking for.” Local residents and visitors alike keep busy in Happy Valley. “This is the tailgating capital of America,” said Howell. “But there’s much more than football, even in the fall. Have you ever been to the Punkin’ Chuckin’ at Bald Eagle State Park? It’s an absolute hoot.” Time to relax and unwind. There are five state parks in Centre County and the great outdoors always beckons. “Whatever you want to do in the outdoors, you can
do. Fishing, hiking, camping, kayaking, canoeing. There are many fall foliage festivals, and many locals simply drive the back roads of the region. “Now we have a Central Pennsylvania Tasting Trail,” said Howell. “Three wineries, five breweries, three distilleries, and one cideree are on the tour. What are your interests? That’s the first question to for us to ask and people to answer.” If enjoying the arts is your thing, then Happy Valley has something for you. International performers and Broadway actors alike grace the stages of the Center for the Performing Arts, the Playhouse, the Pavilion, the Downtown, and the State Theatre. And, there are events from the Great Insect Fair to the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts, one of the top arts and crafts shows in the nation. The people who live here in Happy Valley are happy for a reason. Now you too have an idea what makes the quality of life rich and rewarding here in the embrace of Mount Nittany. Once climbed it’s never forgotten.

The Lullaby of Broadway? You Can Hear It in Happy Valley By Diana Walker Griffith You know the words to the song, New York, New York: “I want to wake up in the city that doesn’t sleep!” But when a voice from the stage commands you to “come on along and listen to the Lullaby of Broadway,” you don’t have to go to the Big Apple or any other major city to see Broadway-worthy talent performing in the biggest shows. You can plan a great weekend of entertainment right here in Happy Valley. State College is the town that stays up late and doesn’t sleep for long. When you consider all that Happy Valley offers in the performing arts, there’s no need to pay more and spend more by driving to New York and dealing with city traffic. Next time you’re in town enjoy more of Happy Valley at these first-rate performance venues: The Center for the Performing Arts at Penn State, the Bryce Jordan Center, The State Theatre, and Pennsylvania Centre Stage.
Our top picks for the performing arts season this fall: Penn State Center for the Performing Arts http://www.cpa.psu.edu/events Regina Carter. In a show called “Southern Comfort” at Schwab Auditorium September 25, this recipient of a MacArthur Foundation “genius” fellowship explores her musical roots through the folk songs her grandfather may have listened to as an Alabama coal miner, as well as Motown, swing, funk, jazz, African and classical music selections. Carter is not only a jazz violinist; she is recognized as the jazz violinist of her generation. Cirque Alfonse--“Timber!” Coming to Eisenhower Auditorium October 8, these acrobats and folk musi-

cians from Canada’s Cirque Alfonse engage in log throwing, axe swinging, feet tapping and plenty more circusstyle acts of derring-do they owe to lumberjacks and farmers. One reviewer noted the influence of Monty Python as well. Brian Stokes Mitchell. The Tony-nominated star of “Man of La Mancha” and “Ragtime” comes to Eisenhower Auditorium with “Simply Broadway” on October 17. If you’ve never heard Mitchell perform “The Impossible Dream,” you’ve missed this major talent’s definitive performance as Don Quixote. He’s the master. And as amazing a baritone he is, you should also hear his range on higher octave songs. Mamma Mia! Coming to Eisenhower Auditorium on October 23, it’s the show that features ABBA’s greatest hits—‘Dancing Queen,” “Take a Chance on Me,” and more! Coming later in the season: • Frogz, February 6, 2015 • Sister Act, “Gloriously Broadway” February 10, 2015 • The King’s Singers, February 17, 2015
Bryce Jordan Center http://www.bjc.psu.edu/ Cher. The beat goes on with Cher’s “Dressed to Kill Tour,” coming to the BJC September 24. Featuring her album “Closer to the Truth, and the No. 1 dance hit, “Woman’s World,” this diva is still outperforming even the newest generation of singers, and still singing “The Beat Goes On.” With special guests Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo. Cirque De Soleil presents “Dralion,” its Chinese acrobatic arts show, now in its final performances after 15 years of touring around the world. October 8-12. The State Theatre http://thestatetheatre.org/ Arlo Guthrie, November 6. “You can get anything you want at ‘Alice’s Restaurant.’” The son of folk singer Woody Guthrie is keeping the folk tradition alive and is still relevant to peace-loving people. This year’s solo tour celebrates his father’s legacy in what would have been Woody’s 100th year. Get the Led Out, November 20. A Led Zeppelin tribute band whose members are not merely imitators, but such devoted fans of “the mighty Zep” that they decided to bring the band’s studio recordings to the concert stage.

Celebrate Summer’s End with a Roundup of Labor Day Fun Holiday Weekend Provides Opportunities to Eat, Drink, Run and Ride By Ed Burns Labor Day Weekend starts a little bit early in Happy Valley. That’s because it’s important to celebrate the end of a great summer the right way. It all starts on Thursday, August 28 with the WingFest Finals at Tussey Mountain starting at 5:30 p.m.. You’ll be perched on the mountainside to help determine who has the best wing sauce in the area. There will be live music, a setting sun, plenty of wings, other good food and beer. Just be careful, things could get rather messy. Friday night, August 29, Mount Nittany Winery will host their End of Summer Gala at 6 p.m., complete with a jazz quartet to set the mood for the evening. Saturday, August 30 kicks off the 2014 football season bright and early, with an 8:30 a.m. ET game time for the Croke Park Classic. Watch the game in your jammies at home with a cup of coffee in hand, or head to one of the many local bars and restaurants that will be serving up plenty of early-morning specials for this unique kickoff time. Stay tuned to HappyValley.com for a list of establishments and specials. Sunday, August 31 starts early with the Mt. Nittany Marathon. The 26.2 mile race meanders around the beautiful scenery of the mountain. Those who do well enough will qualify for the 2015 Boston Marathon. Runners will enjoy the loading up on carbs, compliments of local restaurants, the night before at the Pasta Dinner. The day moves right along, so you’ll have to stay on your toes (but if you’re in the marathon you might be too tired, no need to apologize.) Crickfest 2014 is a fun, family event celebrating the Penn’s Creek Watershed at Coburn Park

from 12-6 p.m. In addition to the food, silent auction, and new information, there’s a petting zoo. Afterward, head to Bellefonte for a community pig roast from 5-8 p.m. Bring a non-perishable food item for the Faith Centre Food Bank as your admission. In addition to the delicious pork, enjoy beer from the historic Roopsberg Brewery. The night ends with the Aurigids Meteor Shower, which you can watch at Black Moshannon State Park. This small shower often produces a plethora of meteors, so come prepared to be wowed. Labor Day on Monday, September 1 provides several great options for fun, too. Celebrate the end of summer at Lakemont Park. There will be free ride and slide passes for everyone all day. If that’s not a fantastic deal, I don’t know what is. Del Grosso’s Amusement Park is having their Labor Day and Customer Appreciation Day for $5.99 all day long. There will be plenty of fun and entertainment. At those prices, you can bring the whole family to both on the same day! In addition to the great parks, you can get a little time with nature. There is a Labor Day Float at Bald Eagle State Park that will take you out on a kayak. Experts on natural and cultural history of the area will join the group, so it will not only be fun, but informative. Labor Day Weekend in Happy Valley has plenty for you to do between the picnics. Take the whole family out for a day, two days, or a weekend of fun and memories. There will be delicious food, and plenty of activities. Enjoy the last days of summer!
Home isn’t Where You Live, It’s How You Live Woman Centric design: The house you’ll love They found that women had unique and practical goals for their new home: they want entertainment areas in their houses – like in their kitchens where the guests end up anyway. They want generous storage spaces throughout the house and especially in the laundry room, pantry and closets. They look for flexible living spaces that can change with projects and life changes – rooms that can transform from a homeschool room to a scrapbooking room to an inlaw suite. And finally, women are looking for de-stressing areas in the house, like a quiet porch, or private sitting area off the owner’s bedroom. Fine Line took this research, revised their home designs and then colorcoded them so prospective buyers could easily identify the entertainment, storage, flexible living and de-stressing areas of each house. There are two fun quizzes on their website to help you identify your primary goal in how you want the home to live and a personality profile keyed to sample home layouts.

Harvest Flavors: Four Fall Dishes You’ll Love Local Restaurants Serve Up the Best Tastes of the Season By Melissa Wolf Happy Valley comes to life in the fall. Penn State football is almost here, and that means time spent with friends and family gathered around the grill tailgating and cheering on the Nittany Lions! Temperatures start to drop and leaves begin to turn providing picturesque sights everywhere you look. Fall also brings your appetite to life, and local hot spots will be dishing out some fall-inspired flavors in the weeks ahead. Many of these dishes use local ingredients from vendors right in our own back yards. Here is what you can look forward to. First up, Kelly’s Steak and Seafood in Boalsburg will be featuring their popular lobster ravioli, made by local Fasta & Ravioli Co. in Pleasant Gap. To get your mouth watering, the lobster ravioli is tossed in a lobster cream sauce and topped with parmesan cheese, diced tomatoes and lobster meat. Bon appetit! You can find Kelly’s full fall menu on their website at www.kellys-steak.com/specials/ or by calling 814-466-6251. You truly can’t go wrong with anything on the menu! More information on Fasta & Ravioli Co. can be found on their website at fasta-co.com. You can also find them at the local farmer’s markets around the area, including Boalsburg, Bellefonte, State College and Huntington. Located within the Hilton Garden Inn on E. College Ave., Harrison’s Wine Grill offers specialty menus all year long. Starting the day after Labor Day, diners can enjoy their eagerly anticipated roasted butternut squash bisque. When you visit, make sure you take some time to savor a glass of wine or enjoy one of the local micro-brews on tap. As you look over the menu, you’ll feel Chef Harrison’s love of local ingredients and the seasonal cuisine of California’s wine country. His culinary creations are often California-style fusion foods of colorful dishes with many different layers of flavor. However, for those with a more conservative palate, there are plenty of traditional favorites also on the menu to choose from. Go to harrisonsmenu.com for more information and to find their full menu. In the mood for Italian? In the weeks ahead, Mario’s will be offering a Milanese specialty, Osso Bucco. Meaning “bone with a hole,” which refers to the marrow hole in the center of the cross cut shank, Osso Bucco is made from cross-cut veal shanks braised with vegetables and served over Risotto Milanese (Arborio rice seasoned with saffron). Mario’s offers authentic Italian cuisine, with pastas made from scratch, hand-tossed pizza and rotisserie wood-grilled chicken. Their sauces are made on site, including their Italian Vodka sauce 24
(you can also buy a jar of it to take home). After dinner, patrons can indulge their sweet tooth and enjoy desserts from tiramisu to fruit tarts to Italian rum cakes. Visit dantesinc. com/locations/marios/ to find Mario’s full menu. If you are looking for fine dining downtown, you can’t go wrong with Zola. The menu changes every month, which is sure to keep your palate happy. Diners can enjoy seasonal dishes like the Tasting of Mushrooms, featuring crimini mushroom flan, black trumpet polenta, mushroom tea, and root vegetable puree. Or if you are hungry for seafood, you’ll enjoy the Wild Scottish Salmon that is mustard-and-herb crusted with Swiss chard, cannellini beans, and rosemary and tomato broth. The current menu is available through September. Find the full menu at zolabistro.com. To make reservations, call 814-237-8474. Fall doesn’t mean just football in Happy Valley, it means good food too! So go out and enjoy these fall-inspired favorites at these local restaurants. Your appetite will be glad that you did.
