Collaborating with the Community

T

here is a new nonprofit in town that’s walking the walk, talking the talk, and practicing what they preach. And what they preach is alliance, coalition, collaboration, efficiency, and getting the most out of every single dollar donated to support the people of Midland and the Permian Basin.

Midland Shared Spaces helps other nonprofits with workspace and support so they can make the most of their resources.

Tenants pay discounted rents on their separate office spaces and share the cost of office supplies, common areas, and IT services. Common areas and an on-site project staff are there to help build opportunities to share projects and consolidate administrative functions. It’s the perfect opportunity to find the gaps or unnecessary overlaps in the system.

All the equipment and services a business needs are available, including in-suite printing, telephones, color copiers, IT services, shared office equipment, scanning and fax capabilities, fullyequipped break rooms and kitchens, high-efficiency work rooms, training space, large meeting space, conference/board rooms, move-in ready offices, and much more.

Each nonprofit’s office size is different and structured to their request. Mission Adult Day Services occupies the largest space, with nearly 9,000 square feet. Midland Opera Theater has the smallest, with a one-room office. “One of our goals is to provide a technology platform for tenant partners that will enhance their capacity to work efficiently and effectively,” said Vicki Jay, MSS Executive Director since 2013.

Short term office space is also available to rent by the day, week, month, or year. Meeting rooms are available to rent for meetings with building and technology assistance services, including room set-up and clean-up. Available for short-term rent are two small conference rooms (8 people each), two board rooms (18 people each), a community room, and a training room.

“This has been a true community collaboration,” Jay said, “with 40 entities donating toward capital and operating expenses including: the Abell-Hanger Foundation, Scharbauer Foundation, Henry Foundation, Concho Resources, Rea Charitable Trust, Wayne and JoAnn Moore Charitable Trust, Warren Equipment, Chaparral Foundation, Pevehouse Family Foundation, Warren Charitable Foundation, Paul and Katherine Morrow Foundation, 4 july 2014 an apple a day

THE CONCEPT In March of 2011, a small group of Midlanders began to ask, “What can we do to better serve those with greatest need in our community?” They discovered the shared space concept.

It is based on the premise that the ability of nonprofits to provide quality, affordable services depends on their ability to build and keep crucial infrastructure resources. More than just offices, shared space helps nonprofit organizations become stronger with others, and that in turn strengthens our community.

Vicki Jay notes, “Our mission has three important features. First: We provide affordable workspace. In Midland today, commercial offices cost between $28 and $32 per square foot. The MSS charges $8 per square foot a month plus an additional $4.25 per square foot for IT hardware, software, equipment and support staff.

“Second: We improve efficiencies. Our feasibility study identified an ongoing challenge with nonprofit organizations. This was the need for built-in efficiencies.

For example: each organization had to pay to own and maintain their own copiers. MSS has a big copier to be shared by all tenants and maintained by MSS staff. The cost of utilities is built into the lease cost.

“Non-profits also needed IT support: no one had the staff for training and staying current in the IT field. Each original tenant had opportunity to identify the shape and square footage of their offices. The goal is to improve each organization’s productivity and quality of work than just offices, through shared space and services.

More shared space helps nonprofit organizations become stronger with others, and that in turn strengthens our community.

“Our third mission feature is collaboration. Our work is to explore what we can do better together.

We look for ways to coordinate efforts. For example: every kid needs a backpack, but one doesn’t need ten. We are looking for the gaps in the system and working to make sure every dime is well spent. We are finding ways to share the load and better utilize donations. We look for ways to work together to make sure those who are in need have a full array of services while reducing the gaps or overlaps.”

Today Agape Ministries, Camp Fire, Family Promise of Midland, Keep Midland Beautiful, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Midland Opera Theater, Midland Shared Spaces, Mission Adult Day Services, Nonprofit Management Center of the Permian Basin, Safe Place of the Permian Basin, Sharing Hands: A Respite Experience, and the Recording Library of West Texas are housed in the building.

Approximately sixty employees work for these 13 nonprofits in the facility.

KEEPING AN EYE ON SAFETY

N

othing causes pain quite like a sharp poke in the eye. I remember years ago opening a heavy cardboard box that was secured with those large copper staples. I was excited about what was inside, so I jerked the opposing flaps open. Before I could even close my eyes, one of those staples shot out of its mooring and hit me directly on the eyeball. I can’t recall more intense pain before or since. If I had been wearing goggles or even glasses, the staple would have bounced away harmlessly, but my eyes were completely unprotected. I was very lucky to suffer only a very sore eyeball for a few days.

More than 2,000 eye injuries occur every day in the U.S., and most of them could be prevented.

Half of eye injuries occur in the workplace. Looking at the statistics from a different view, more than one million people suffer from eye injuries annually in the U.S., and 90% of these injuries could be prevented if the victims had been wearing appropriate protective eye wear. About 70% of workplace eye injuries occur from flying or falling objects, or from sparks striking the eye.

It seems so obvious: if you’re anywhere near a situation that could potentially be hazardous to your eyes, wear proper eye protection. That’s the best and easiest way to prevent injury to the eye.

Unfortunately, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that about 60% of workers injured are not wearing eye protection or are wearing the wrong kind of eye protection for the job. Bottom line is this: 1) assess the situation, and if it is potentially hazardous to the eyes, 2) wear eye protection.

Eye injuries don’t only occur in the workplace. Many occur in the home. Common household products cause more than 32,000 eye injuries per year. The same precautions used in the workplace should

be used at home. Use care and wear safety goggles when handling chemicals, and wash your hands thoroughly afterwards. Turn spray nozzles away from yourself and others.

Store paints, pesticides, and fertilizers in a secure area. Use guards on all power equipment. If you’re in the workshop, think about flying wood chips, sawdust, and splinters, and wear goggles if they will be a result of the project.

here are a lot of creepy critters in West Texas during the summer—ticks, spiders, snakes, scorpions. Do you know which ones are the dangerous ones and which ones are just a nuisance?

Toxicologists refer to the American Southwest as the Venom Belt: we are home to thousands of venomous animals, some of which can be extremely dangerous to humans. Spiders, wasps, snakes, and scorpions co-exist with people in West Texas. Their poisonous bites are not uncommon. The best way to enjoy the summertime without worrying about poisonous pests is to prepare for any situation.

VENOMOUS SNAKES In Texas there are four types of venomous snakes: rattlesnakes, copperheads, water moccasins (cottonmouths), and coral snakes. The first three are in a group called vipers. Vipers have a characteristic large head described as arrowhead- or triangle-shaped and can accurately strike at up to one-third their body length.

Preventing a snakebite is pretty simple: leave snakes alone. Some bites, such as those inflicted when snakes are accidentally stepped on, are difficult to prevent. But many people are bitten because they try to kill a snake or get a closer look at it. Stay out of tall grass unless you wear thick leather boots, and remain on hiking paths as much as possible.

Keep hands and feet out of areas you can’t see.

Don’t pick up rocks or firewood unless you are out of a snake’s striking distance. Be cautious and alert when climbing rocks.

Preventing scorpion stings requires wearing long sleeves and pants and leather gloves. Shake out clothing or shoes before putting them on. Those with a history of severe allergic reactions should carry an EpiPen and wear a medical identification bracelet or necklace stating their allergy.

Symptoms of a scorpion sting may include: • A stinging or burning sensation at the injection site (very little swelling or inflammation) • Positive “tap test” (i.e., extreme pain when the sting site is tapped with a finger) • Restlessness or convulsions • Roving eyes or staggering gait • Thick tongue sensation or slurred speech • Drooling or muscle twitches • Abdominal pain and cramps or respiratory depression VENOMOUS SPIDERS Spiders serve a very beneficial purpose in nature, often feeding on nuisance critters such as mosquitoes, gnats, flies, and crickets. All spiders have venom; that is how they kill their prey. Texas has two venomous species of spiders, the black widow (Latrodectus mactans) and the brown recluse (Loxosceles reclusa).

Black widow spiders are identified by the pattern of red coloration on the underside of their abdomen and can be found in undisturbed areas such as woodpiles, under eaves, fences, and other areas

where debris has accumulated. They may also be found living in outdoor toilets where flies are plentiful.

Black widow spiders build webs between objects, and bites usually occur when humans come into direct contact with these webs. A bite from a black widow can be distinguished from other insect bites by the two puncture marks it makes in the skin. The venom is a neurotoxin that produces pain at the bite area and then spreads to the chest, abdomen, or the entire body.

Brown recluse spiders like dark, unbothered spots. These spiders commonly live in basements and garages of houses and can be found hiding between boards, boxes, and old towels or clothes.

You’ll want to be cautious if they are going into a place that has not been disturbed for a long while, such as an old shed or an outhouse at a campsite.

Brown recluse spiders are golden brown in color and can be identified by the characteristic dark brown to black fiddle-shaped pattern on the head region. Brown recluse venom has necrotizing enzymes that generally cause local or systemic reactions.

Prevention requires shaking out any clothing, shoes, towels, or equipment before use. Wear protective clothing such as a long-sleeved shirt and long pants, hat, gloves, and boots when handling stacked or undisturbed piles of materials. pposites attract and when they do it’s a beautiful thing. Two new interval training classes at the Odessa Family YMCA deliver results, but do so by using very different approaches.

“I’m excited about the new classes,” said Piloxing and Fusion Fit 6 Certified Instructor Lena Martinez.

“Piloxing incorporates two of my favorite things.

Martinez encourages those with foot issues or those who are uncomfortable going barefoot to still try the class. “You can wear shoes in class but it is recommended the shoes be flat-bottomed, flexible in the forefoot, and have a bit of traction.”

Shoes on or shoes off, it’s estimated 800 calories can be torched in the hour-long class. “We are

I feel like I accomplish more in Fusion Fit. There’s no choreography to slow me down,” Lehman said.

Based on the fitness principle of periodization, Fusion Fit 6 is a systematic method of training in timed intervals divided into progressively difficult phases and blocks. “We start up with movement prep. This is not like a typical warm up. It’s more like a rehearsal of the exercises we will be doing and feels more like a workout,” said the Y Instructor.

Next, the class is sectioned into rounds, beginning with upper body strength. For example, moves like push-ups, reverse flies, and dumbbell chest presses are used.

Participants then move on to two minutes of plyometric and cardio training. Moves like jumping jacks, high knees, and mountain climbers are done for one minute or, depending on the workout, divided into shorter thirty-second sections.

Following cardio is one minute of active recovery; this entails balancing on one leg while adding a controlled upper body move such as bicep curls or overhead presses.

Two more rounds of upper body strength, cardio, and active recovery are added, each time progressing into more complex moves.

Juan Hernandez, M.D., received his medical degree in Bogota, Columbia and moved to the United States in 2000 to do research for Johns Hopkins Medical School in Baltimore. He completed his family medicine training in Buffalo, New York and joined First Physicians in 2013. Dr. Hernandez is fluent in Spanish and English. Here are some ideas for maintaining optimum eye heath: Like your teeth, your eyes need a periodic checkup every so often—once a year is recommended. In bright sunlight, wear sunglasses that can reflect at least 98% of UV radiation. Eat well, particularly foods with antioxidants such as vitamins C and E, plus lutein and zeaxanthin. These last two are found in eggs and dark leafy greens, and they may act like natural sunglasses. And eat fatty fish, such as salmon, sardines, mackerel, herring, and trout. If you work with a computer for extended hours, periodically give your eyes a rest by looking outside or at some distant object. Close your eyes for a few seconds to rest and remoisten them. And make sure the light is right.

Fifty thousand people lose their sight needlessly every year, some by injury, some by disease or other factors. Most eye injuries can be prevented by simply wearing appropriate eye protection. And you can develop habits that maintain your eyes’ health for years to come. See to it.

If you are bitten or stung by a venomous animal, follow these first aid steps.

VENOMOUS SNAKES When bitten, try to get immediate treatment. If you can’t, the American Red Cross recommends a few basic first-aid techniques: • Note the time of the bite, remove jewelry or other items that might constrict swelling, and remain calm.

• Do not try to capture the snake.

• Do not cut the wound and try to extract the venom by mouth.

• Do not use ice or a tourniquet.

• If possible, wash the bitten area with soap and water and cover with a cloth. Keep the bitten area level with the heart.

• Do not take pain relievers or other medications without medical advice. Do not drink alcohol.

• Call the Poison Center for instructions on all snake bites. 1–800–222–1222 SCORPION STING • Contact a qualified health care provider or poison control center for advice and medical instructions.

• Ice may be applied directly to the sting site (never submerge the affected limb in ice water).

• Remain relaxed and calm.

• Do not take any sedatives.

• Capture the scorpion for identification if it is possible to do so safely.

VENOMOUS SPIDERS Most bites are usually not medically significant, with the exception of bites from black widow spiders

and brown recluse spiders. If you are bitten by a spider, you may experience a red, swollen, itchy area on your skin. In most cases, these go away without much care or attention. If you feel or see the spider biting you, wash the area with soap and water. Call the Poison Center for further instructions at 1–800–222–1222.

Following a brown recluse spider bite, first aid is of limited help so you will need to contact the Texas Poison Center Network at 1–800–POISON–1 (1–800–764–7661) or your family physician for information about treatment. However, in the meantime: • Stay calm. Identify the type of spider if it is possible to do so safely. Identification will help in medical treatment.

• Wash the bite area with soap and water.

• Apply a cloth dampened with cold water or filled with ice to the bite area to reduce swelling.

• Elevate bite area if possible.

• Do not attempt to remove venom.

• Immediately seek professional medical attention.

BEE, WASP, OR HORNET STING • Have someone stay with you to watch for an allergic reaction.

• Wash the site with soap and water.

• Remove the stinger using gauze wiped over the area or by scraping a fingernail over the area.

Never squeeze the stinger or use tweezers.

• Apply ice to reduce swelling.

• Do not scratch the sting as this may increase swelling, itching, and risk of infection.

get fit with kim SUMMERTIME SERIES PART 2: THE LAZY DAYS OF SUMMER

W

hen I was growing up, we couldn’t wait to go play outside. Whether we spent the day at the swimming pool or rode our bicycles all over town, we were outside doing something physical.

Occasionally there was a rainy day when we went to the movies or stayed inside to play video games and read, but that was very seldom in West Texas.

Today, with advances in technology, kids are more sedentary due to a world of games, videos, and computers, at their fingertips.

Getting some kids to use their imaginations and play outside can be a challenge for parents.

To get the more sedentary kids active this summer, limit TV, gaming, and computer time. Restrict these more sedentary activities for later in the day or after supper to ensure that your kids are physically active first. Reading and playing games with the entire family are great activities, but should not replace physical exercise.

For the kids who are actively participating in sports, parents may need to take the opposite approach.

With the ever-growing competitive nature to be the best athlete, parents may feel their kids must use summer break to practice or get private lessons to gain an edge over their peers. Unfortunately, this can cause burnout and overtraining which leads to injury before the new season ever begins.

Encouraging young athletes to try different sports during the summer will teach them new skills, keep them active and social while meeting new

people, provide cross training to their sport, prevent boredom, and avoid burnout. This will give the young athlete the physical and mental break they need. They will also learn to appreciate other activities outside of their comfort zone and possibly find a new talent or interest.

For both the sedentary and competitive kids, summer break is a great time to introduce new activities to your child that they may not otherwise have time to try during the school year. The commitment is short, so they have an opportunity to try several different activities. From organized sport camps, swimming, martial arts classes, to the arts: painting, photography, and music; there are summer programs offered everywhere. Contact local schools, museums, churches, the YMCA, or Boys and Girls Clubs for information on summer programs. Whether the activities are formally organized or just loosely-structured neighborhood games and days spent at the swimming pool, the most important thing is that the child is comfortable and enjoying the activities.

There are plenty of ways to still enjoy a fun summer break while also living healthy and keeping kids engaged. Here’s to a great summer!

A

t my age, I have a very low tolerance for the heat. I don’t want to be outside at all. I sat in the bleachers and in the heat, watching my boys play ball, so it surprises me the low tolerance I have for it now. I can be outside for a short time and feel dizzy and so light-headed that I will just sit down wherever I am. A friend suggested that I may need a complete physical exam from the doctor to see why the heat makes me so dizzy. I know this and I need to do it, but somehow I just won’t.

I noticed that my dogs are the same way. They won’t stay outside any longer than they have to.

That is their usual routine, so I am not concerned about it. However, my friend’s new puppy has a cute little head-bobbing thing he does. It’s difficult to notice because he is a very active puppy, but when he stops for a few minutes, you can see that his head bobs. At first glance, it seems that he may be doing it on purpose, or like he is shaking from fear or anxiety. When I mentioned it to my friend, she said he does this once in a while and she thought it was from the heat.

Since she advised me that I should get a checkup, I felt it was only common courtesy that I suggest she take the puppy in for a checkup. “It isn’t time for his vaccinations and he isn’t sick,” was her response. I explained that with animals, there is a wellness physical just as humans have when we go for an annual physical. We get the blood work and the physical exam just to maintain our health and wellbeing. Consider it parallel medicine because animals need the same wellness exam we do. I am always more willing to take the dogs in to the vet instead of myself to the doctor, but I understand some folks don’t feel the same way.

As it turns out, the puppy has idiopathic head tremors. It is similar to seizures and my friend has to keep a journal to see if there is some sort of trigger for it.

Some experts think it could be caused by low blood sugar or low potassium and calcium.

It’s important that he be fed the appropriate food for his age and development. Also, there are a few things she will do to keep him from going into a tremor trance, like calling his name. It’s is really quite upsetting and scary for the family, but not much can be done for him and he doesn’t seem to mind it at all. Hopefully, he will grow out of it.

Animals need the same wellness exam we do.

Now, I guess since she took my advice and got the puppy to the vet, I really must take hers and get my annual physical too. Sometimes it is much easier to give advice than to take it.

C

alcium is a vital mineral found in a plethora of foods. In some cases a poor diet may lead to a deficiency of calcium and supplementation with secondary sources is recommended. Physicians have connected low levels of calcium with brittle bones and teeth in middle-aged women, which during menopause may develop into osteoporosis.

Exploring calcium supplement benefits when so many calcium-rich foods are available may appear somewhat redundant. But, if you consider that the average American diet enjoyed by both men and women is woefully deficient in nutrients and instead largely to blame for an increase in weight, cases of hypertension, and a plethora of other health problems, the wisdom of seeking out information and recommendations for calcium pills makes sense.

CALCIUM SUPPLEMENTS: HOW TO GET YOUR DAILY DOSE OF CALCIUM Generally, women should be getting between 8001200 mg of calcium daily. This can vary depending on age, preexisting conditions, and pregnancy, so be sure to check with your doctor. Supplemental calcium is available as a serum-infused tonic, a liquid-filled caplet, and of course hard pills made up of magnesium, carbonate, and other trace minerals. The absorption of the latter is sometimes questioned, especially if there is no fortification with vitamin D, which has been found to be instrumental in the bodily assimilation of these supplements.

History and information about calcium supplementation has overcome the old wives’ tales that had women somewhat hesitant about adding these products to their daily nutrition for fear of creating buildup in their arteries. Since the role of the supplement is to strengthen bones and teeth, the substance is quickly used by the body. Readily available scientific facts do not bear out that there are any adverse effects to your health if you take a calcium aid.

Foods rich in calcium include: • Dairy products (milk, yogurt, cheese, etc.)

• Leafy greens • Sardines • Soybeans • Brazil nuts • Almonds • Oranges • Fortified cereals and orange juice HOW TO AND WHEN TO TAKE YOUR CALCIUM VITAMINS You might be wondering how to take these supplements to most benefit your body. Interestingly, there are some little-known mistakes that women make! For example, did you know that during an evaluation of the medical history of menopausal women it was discovered that taking calcium supplements too close to bone strengtheners will cause the former to not be absorbed?

Similarly, information is now available which showcases that calcium supplements need to be taken with food to permit for the proper acidic environment to allow for the maximum bodily absorption. While the packaging may inform you that taking the supplement with food is optional, this only refers to potential adverse health conditions.

Calcium requires the presence of vitamin D as well as fat for optimal nutrient digestion, and this environment can only be offered when there is food in the stomach concurrently with the supplement.

Women who are uncertain about their calcium intake will do well to consult with their physicians immediately. Failure to do so may put them at serious risk for brittle bones and in danger of suffering one or more osteoporosis-induced bone fractures.

Jerked Chicken Kabobs

by Kim Clinkenbeard, CPT, FNS 1/2 cup unsweetened organic apple juice 2 tsp. minced ginger 2 tsp. dried crushed chili peppers 1/2 yellow onion, chopped 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar 1 Tbsp. hot pepper sauce (or Sriracha sauce)

1 tsp. dried thyme 1/2 tsp. ground Jamaican allspice 1/2 tsp. black pepper 1 1/4 lb. chicken breasts, cut into 1” cubes Wooden skewers

In a blender, combine all ingredients except chicken. Puree until fairly smooth. Pour the marinade into a large bowl, reserving 1/3 of the marinade in another container. Add the chicken cubes and stir to coat well.

Cover and refrigerate overnight.

Soak wooden skewers in water for at least 30 minutes before using. Meanwhile, preheat the outdoor grill (or indoor grill pan or broiler). Make sure the grill is clean and well-oiled prior to preheating.

Thread the chicken onto the skewers, and discard the used marinade. Place the reserved marinade in a saucepan, and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Transfer the pan to the grill or reduce the heat to low to keep it warm.

Grill or broil the chicken for 5 minutes per side, or until it’s no longer pink. Brush the reserved marinade on the chicken before turning and again a minute before it’s finished cooking.
