Concussion Prevention

rom pee wee to professional, football is the biggest game in town. The rough and tumble game is practically woven into every Texan’s DNA. With over a thousand kids participating in the Odessa Family Y’s tackle football program, it takes attentive coaches to keep the game safe as well as fun.

“When it comes to player safety, we like to be proactive not reactive,” said Odessa Family Y Chief Operations Officer, Ed Moreno. “We make it mandatory for coaches to complete an online coaching school. The course is from USA Football. USA Football is funded by the NFL. Coaches learn the fundamentals, the basics of first aid and hydration. More importantly, they learn about concussions,” Moreno said.

In addition, Y coaches also receive concussion awareness fact sheets from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC’s online resource called Heads Up: Concussion in Youth Sports is available not only for coaches but for parents and athletes as well.

“The Heads Up project offers important information on preventing, recognizing, and responding to concussions,” said Moreno.

The CDC’s lists the following signs that could indicate a possible concussion:

• Appears dazed or stunned

• Is confused about assignment or position

• Forgets sports plays

• Is unsure of game, score, or opponent

• Moves clumsily

• Answers questions slowly

• Loses consciousness (even briefly)

• Shows behavior or personality changes

• Can’t recall events prior to hit or fall

• Can’t recall events after hit or fall Symptoms reported by athlete:

• Headache or “pressure” in the head

• Nausea, balance problems, or dizziness

• Double or blurry vision

• Sensitivity to light

• Sensitivity to noise • Feeling sluggish, hazy, foggy, or groggy • Concentration or memory problems • Confusion • Does not “feel right”

If a concussion is suspected, the CDC recommends athletes should seek treatment immediately.

New USA Football guidelines promote a safety first approach. One new recommendation is to reduce hard hitting practices to only two to three times a week.

Assistant Coach Jose Gaona applauds the new safety rules. “National attention on concussions has trickled down to the USA Football organization. It’s a matter of changing the old mindset of ‘just shake it off, just walk it off.’ Head injuries have long term issues. Nine- and ten-year-olds still have a lot of growing to do,” Gaona said.

Gaona has found he is not alone in a “safety first” mentality towards the game. “I’ve found no resistance. In conversations with other coaches, they embrace it too. It’s better to be safe than sorry,” Gaona said.

Sometimes, safety means convincing enthusiastic players to sit out a play or two. “Safety starts at the beginning of the year. These kids want to play in the NFL. We tell them work hard and take care of yourself. One play is not worth your whole career,” said Gaona.

Still, in a sport that is fiercely competitive, it’s hard to keep top players out of the game. “Good players show no fear. What coach wants to lose his best players? It’s better to take it slow and manage the situation. We had one player that missed half a season. He had a concussion but symptoms didn’t show up for two to three days,” Gaona said.

Tyler Stance is not afraid of concussions, he just doesn’t like them. At 21, he has experienced four concussions in the span of his football career that began in junior high. In spite of head-to-head contact, Stance believes old equipment can literally be a headache. His last concussion he attributes to a substandard helmet.

“My helmet just popped off. It was cheap. It had a plastic face mask. Old helmets don’t protect against concussions. Newer helmets can minimize concussions,” Stance said.

Helmets are a big part of Moreno’s proactive safety approach to the Y’s tackle football program. All the Y’s football equipment is inspected and certified through a Riddell representative. Every two years helmets must be either reconditioned or replaced.

“In our inventory of helmets, not one is over two years old. They are also rated to a junior high level.

Regardless of how much parents spend on a helmet, no helmet is 100 percent concussion proof. It’s a helmet’s proper fit that makes all the difference. “If they’re not wearing it correctly, it’s a set up for failure,” said Gaona.

To ensure safety, players must undergo mandatory equipment inspections. “The rep from Riddell inspects every kid. We make sure our equipment and outside equipment fits correctly or we don’t allow it,” Moreno said.

Even with the best, well-fitting gear, and conscientious coaches, this is a contact sport, and injuries will happen.

Aside from being a hard hitting, adrenaline pumping game; football can also be a valuable teaching tool.

“Players learn life skills. They learn team work and how to listen to others. Football teaches you to persevere,” Moreno said. an apple a day august 2012

hy do you read health articles?

For some it’s to learn about living healthier day to day. For me it’s to learn how to have a better lifestyle. But changing lifestyles doesn’t come easily—I always want it to be simpler!

Reading about making changes, I came across the best-selling book The Blue Zones by Dan Buettner, who shares health secrets from around the world.

“Blue Zones” are longevity hot-spots, areas in the world with high concentrations of the world’s longest-lived people. Buettner identifies elements of lifestyle, diet, and personal/community outlook that result in a higher quality and length of life.

He doesn’t promote a quick fix: there are no diets or exercise programs that last for a month here.

The name of the game here is sustaining. These recommendations are for the long haul—designed to maximize the long years of successful aging. The five areas in the world are in Okinawa, Japan; the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica; the Greek island of Ikaria; Sardinia, Italy; and Loma Linda, California.

For example:

• Okinawa has the longest disability-free life expectancy.

• The Nicoya Peninsula is where middle-aged people have a 4 times better chance of reaching age 90 than we do in America.

• Nearly 1 out of 3 people on Ikaria makes it to their 90s with about a 20% lower rate of cancer, 50% lower rate of heart disease, and almost no dementia.

• Sardinia has the highest number of men in the world living well into their 100s.

• The 7th Day Adventists in Loma Linda have a life expectancy of 9 to 11 years greater than anywhere else in America.

What do these groups of people do that is so different from the rest of us? One of the common elements in the Blue Zones is they tend to live in homes and environments that daily nudge them into bursts of physical activity in almost an effortless way. Okinawans sit on the floor, Sardinians live in vertical homes, the Costa Ricans have gardens.

They are doing little things all day long that add up significantly over the years and the decades.

ON THE FAST TRACK FOR BACK-TO-SCHOOL

ugust means the end of summer and the beginning of yet another school year. A busy time for many parents which consists of back-to-school “musts” including attending registrations, gathering necessary supplies, shopping for new clothes or uniforms, and scheduling doctor’s appointments for physicals and vaccinations. Luckily, parents can save time and money by visiting the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile for their back-to-school medical check-ups.

With the new school year fast approaching, the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile is getting ready for another busy year of providing cost-effective medical care and health information “on wheels.”

The unit is one of thirty-one in the nation and one of three in Texas. The Care Mobile is a 40-footlong, 8-foot-wide self-contained bus designed like a mini-medical clinic featuring two exam rooms, a lab, a reception area, and medical records area.

The clinic is headed by Dr. Eileen Sheridan-Shayeb with a staff consisting of a board certified nurse practitioner, a medical assistant, a billing specialist, and several local nursing students from Odessa College, Midland College, Texas Tech, and soon, UTPB. Aside from the convenience of a smaller office and using the comfort of your car as a waiting room, the services provided by the mobile clinic generally cost less than most doctors’ visits, including a $25 co-pay for insured and un-insured patients. The unit also offers $5 immunizations and $25 sports physicals, two services which are in high demand as the new school year revs up.

While the busiest time for the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile is during the school year, the team continues to provide services while school is not in session. This summer, the Care Mobile has been stationed at the Odessa College campus near the sports complex where it will remain until the new school year begins. The summer season has been a busy one at the clinic, according to Michelle Brindley, the board certified family nurse Practitioner for the Care Mobile. “We have had an influx of new patients due to the booming economy. We

have seen an increase in the amount of patients we see day to day, as well as out of state patients who have been transplanted to the area.” The Care Mobile is open Monday—Thursday from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm, and on Fridays until 1:30 pm. The unit has also traveled to nearby towns this summer as a method of broadening their service reach. To round out the summer season, the Care Mobile will be stationed at the McDonald’s in Monahans on August 17 before returning to Odessa for the new school year.

During the school year, the Care Mobile is stationed for one week intervals at the following elementary schools: Blackshear, Cavazos, Goliad, Pease, and Zavala. Although the unit is stationed at different schools throughout the year, regular health care services continue to be offered to any local student and their siblings. The Care Mobile staff also works with school nurses and parents to provide health care for students who require immediate medical attention or may not be financially able to visit a physician.

During school testing weeks and holidays, the Care Mobile is normally stationed at Odessa College

or at the Family Health Clinic location at 840 W. Clements St. However, this year, the Care Mobile will be stationed at temporary sites in West Odessa to help explore the need for a possible second Family Medical Clinic in that area. Additionally, next summer, the Care Mobile will travel to more surrounding towns to provide health care services for local children.

SICK VISITS Many patients visit the mobile clinic instead of waiting for an appointment with their physician, especially during winter, when doctor’s offices are overrun with sick people. Patients can receive diagnosis and treatment in a timely manner for a quick recovery.

Human trafficking has gone on for thousands of years. In ancient times, the peoples who were conquered—both soldiers and citizens alike—were frequently forced or sold into slavery. Nowadays armies generally don’t do that; human trafficking is not conducted on such a wholesale scale, but the despicable practice continues—a lot more than most people realize. And it happens in every area of the world, including the United States.

It’s called Rescue Innocence, and you can find out more about it first-hand by contacting Clark Racca, the Lead Pastor at Grace Christian Fellowship in Odessa. Rescue Innocence is part of Outreach International and is based in Shelbyville, Missouri. It was founded by Brent Messimer. Born in Belgium and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa, Brent has served as a preacher and youth minister in the United States for the last 12 years. Having previously served in Mexico, South Africa, and Uganda, he is comfortable in the international arena.

ast month I gave you three of the five elements that I consider to be key to a well-rounded exercise regimen— strength, core, and cardio training. Below are the final, and possibly the most important, key elements.

FLEXIBILITY TRAINING Ahhh, flexibility! My nemesis. I will admit that flexibility is the element that gives me the most trouble physically. I don’t mind gutting it out in the gym or riding the bike for five hours, but for me stretching is something that gets put on the back burner all too often. Or, I should say, used to be put on the back burner. Over the years (and many injuries) I have gained a new respect for flexibility.

Your body will just not function in a chronically tight state, and you will succumb to injury (sometimes severe injury requiring surgery) eventually. I find that I get bored easily with traditional stretching techniques. Although they are beneficial, there are other more beneficial (and fun, I might add) ways to gain flexibility—SMR (self myofacial release), dynamic stretching, active stretching, Pilates, yoga, and Tai Chi to name a few. Incorporate flexibility into your exercise routine and reap the rewards of this patience-required skill.

REST Rest is the final element to a well-rounded healthy body. Some have rest down to an art form—doing more rest than anything else. Others get anxious if they miss even one workout—never taking a day off. We should all aim for a balance in our exercise routine. Allowing your body a little recovery will not only let your muscles rebuild (becoming stronger) and let your joints have a break, but also give your mind a rest. Without physical and mental rest, we will burn out and often quit exercising all together.

If you find you’re having difficulty moving past a plateau or finding the motivation to continue hitting the gym or running every morning, evaluate your schedule. Do you have a rest day built into it? If not, start there. Or maybe you have too many rest days.

In this case, add some variety into your workout

routine by incorporating one of the other elements you may be neglecting.

People tend to gravitate to one of these five elements over the others depending on their genetic make-up or what comes naturally to them.

While focusing on sport-specific training is a must to succeed at your sport, neglecting the other four elements will eventually hinder your performance.

Even if you are just exercising for your health and lifestyle, attention to strength, cardio, core, flexibility, and rest will change not only your physical ability, but the way you move and feel as a whole.

Here are a few things a well-rounded exercise program will do for you—with a translation in case the medical reasons aren’t enough for some of you:

• Maintain or get to a healthy weight, lowering your risk of developing obesity related diseases. Translation: look good in the mirror, allow you to have the song “I’m Sexy and I Know It” as your ring tone, and fit into that swimsuit you’ve passed by at Target 10 times this summer.

• Lower blood pressure and cholesterol.

Translation: get your doctor off your back and reduce or eliminate your medications.

• Reduce stress and anxiety. Translation: less road rage, better sleep, more friends, and a positive outlook.

• More energy. Translation: you get more checked off the “honey do” list and have more free time for fun stuff and date night with the spouse!

So, if you are lacking in any of the above mentioned disciplines, take this summer to restructure your routine so you can be the best body you can.

Keliree Mitchell founded Pet Spotters, a Facebook site dedicated to connecting lost pets with their owners after losing her own pet Chihuahua, Mindy. Woof, Woof! represents stories related to this site and is dedicated to Mindy.

ongratulations, Pet Spotters for our 2nd Year on Facebook! This second year has been more amazing than the first. Every day the page grows, pets are rescued.

Pet Spotters is a Facebook page designed to help people find their missing pets. The page is designed as a fan page. First you must “Like” the page and then you can post pictures and make comments.

If you lose your pet, upload a picture of the animal with your contact information. You can take comfort that hundreds of caring people will see the post of your missing pet and be on the lookout for it. When I lost Mindy, I felt lost too. I felt there was nowhere to turn for help. That is when Pet Spotters came to be and the mission statement of the page is simple. It is to help people find their missing pets and rescue homeless animals.

That is the original intention of the page and how I expected it to work.

And it works wonderfully. However, I wasn’t expecting for the page to unite so many passionate people together. Pet Spotters has knitted

the hearts of strangers together and made them friends. It has brought many animal lovers, and animal shelters together as a united team. Other pet pages have been inspired by Pet Spotters and we have joined forces and made such an impact on the community. Great rescues are happening every day.

Recently, someone started a dog walking group through the page. It is so cool that strangers would meet, become friends, and walk their dogs together. I am completely blown away by all the new and exciting things people do through the page. Whether it’s walking dogs or saving a pet, the team will band together and use their unique skills to network through their groups and find a solution.

Just reading all the posts and seeing the activity is amazing. I truly see miracles happen.

One of my favorite quotes from Margaret Mead is: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” This is exactly what is happening on a daily basis through Pet Spotters.

Thoughtful, committed, passionate people are changing our community for the better. I am so grateful to be part of it. Thank you so much for all your hard work and I am looking forward to see what we can do in year three. Congratulations, Pet Spotters!

Perfect Corn on the Cob

This is from a YouTube video that a friend sent me. I thought it was genius, so I’m passing it along to all of you!

Place the corn—still in the husk and untrimmed—in the microwave and cook on high for 4 minutes per ear. So, if you have 2 ears of corn, you will cook it for 8 minutes (for those of you who are bad at math).

Using oven gloves, remove the cooked corn from the microwave and cut the stem end off about an inch into the ear of corn. Grab the silks and the husk and shake the corn out of the bottom. It will come out perfectly clean.

This also works for any method of cooked hot corn in the husk.

If you let the ear of corn cool or put it in the fridge before shucking it, it won’t work very well. The corn needs to be hot.
