icture this: you walk into your utility room to check on the dryer and find your toddler sitting on the floor holding an open bottle of window cleaner with blue liquid running down the front of his shirt. He’s obviously been drinking it. Do you 1) try to induce vomiting, 2) quickly take him to the emergency room (ER) or your family physician, 3) call the poison control center, or 4) follow the instructions on the bottle’s label? You’ll find the answer later in this article.

More than 2 million poisonings are reported each year to the 57 poison control centers across the country, and more than 90 percent of these poisonings occur in the home. Poisonings cause more than 35,000 deaths per year, and more than 90 percent of those deaths occur among people who are more than 20 years old. Children under 6 years of age account for slightly more than half of all poison exposures. Most people think of a scene like the one described above, where a young child has ingested a poisonous substance, when they think of poisoning. But almost 700,000 ER visits per year are drug-related poisonings. The majority of fatal poisonings occur among adults, and poisoning is one of the leading causes of death among adults.

The aim of the program is to provide sufficient information to treat a poison incident at home, but referral to the nearest hospital or dispatching of EMS can also be provided.

There are poison hazards outside the home, such as in certain workplaces, but since 9 out of 10 poisonings happen in the home, we’ll concentrate there. And there are a lot of things in the home that can be a poison hazard, including some you might not think of. For instance, if a young child swallows alcohol, it can cause seizures, coma, and death. The alcohol need not come from a beverage. Mouthwash, facial cleaners, aftershave, and hair tonics frequently contain as much alcohol as alcoholic beverages. Miniature “button” batteries, used in hearing aids, watches, cameras, and many other electronic devices, are very easily swallowed and can become lodged in a child’s esophagus, which creates a medical emergency. Did you know that vitamins containing iron, if ingested in large quantities by a child, can produce bloody vomit or

hen Crisis Center Executive Director Karen Hildebrand spoke at a casual fund raising event, many were moved by Hildebrand’s message. Some, like Odessa Family Y yoga instructor Nancy Borrelli, heard a call to action.

“After Karen spoke, I approached her. I told her I wanted to volunteer. I liked the idea of the shelter and I wanted to do more than just donate money. I told her I could teach yoga,” Borrelli said.

The Crisis Center/Angel House is a local organization that provides safe shelter for victims of domestic and sexual abuse. Education and support is available to help families heal, get independent and back on their feet.

The timing was perfect. Hildebrand was in the process of implementing a new program called P.A.T.H., Positive Action Through Healing.

On Sunday afternoons house residents, including children, are invited to take part in several classes.

The classes are diverse, offering subjects like art, yoga, and healthy cooking within a budget.

Crisis Shelter Manager Eric Uresti thinks the P.A.T.H. program is not only phenomenal but a great success as well. “The classes are optional, but the majority of the women and children go to them. It really creates a relaxing environment. Yoga and art are tied for the title of the most fun activity,” Uresti said.

One 37-year-old resident, named only J for her privacy, was surprised by how she felt after a yoga session. “It was crazy at first. I heard all my bones pop. That sounds painful but it’s like a massage for

the body. I never thought I would enjoy something meditative like yoga. Sunday is my day off so I try not to miss any classes. Yoga keeps me focused and clear. I have no stress and it gets me ready for the week ahead,” J said.

Borrelli hoped this would be the response her class would receive. “Fitness is better than therapy. The body releases endorphins and you feel better about yourself,” she said.

The nurturing atmosphere is helping J get stronger every day. She is grateful for her counselor and the other volunteers at the shelter. “Thank God for this place. Everyone has helped me a lot. I had such low self-esteem, but I feel better every day. I also want to thank the yoga teacher.

She doesn’t have to do this for us. She and the all the other teachers are great. Not everyone goes out of their way like that to help other people.”

Borrelli has since recruited several other Odessa Family Y instructors to volunteer. Odessa Family Y CEO Edward Moreno says this illustrates the positive impact the Y can make.

“This is a perfect example of a YMCA community outreach program. The Y emphasizes the development of spirit, mind, and body. By donating their time and talents to the Crisis Center, our instructors are helping others and demonstrating social responsibility,” Moreno said.

The success of the PBRC has been due, in large part, to the overwhelming generosity of the people in this community and the dedicated and compassionate staff. The mission has been simple and remained the same for the past 62 years.

The Rehab Center is here to provide the highest quality of therapy to those who face difficult and challenging situations and to give hope and support for families throughout the Permian Basin. The Permian Basin Rehab Center is a multi-disciplinary facility that provides occupational, physical, speech and audiological therapy services to people ranging in age from birth to geriatrics. Our mission is to facilitate continuity of care.

The Telethon raises much needed funds for the Patient Assistance Program. The Assistance Program is supported by donor dollars and allows the Rehab Center to provide therapy and equipment, as well as make facility improvements to benefit our patients. Each year patients and families graciously share their stories of perseverance and hope with the CBS7 viewing audience through the Permian Basin Rehab Center’s Annual Telethon.

arents are bombarded with messages about how to raise their children. What are you to do with all the conflicting information available? How do you even know if your child is obese or just big? An Australian study showed that more than four in ten parents with underweight or overweight children mistakenly believe their kids are of average weight. They were unable to tell if their child was fat and they were also unable to tell interviewers what constituted a healthy diet. In the US, about one third of obese children have mothers who don’t realize it. They believe their kids are at a normal weight. Being obese puts a child at high risk for developing Type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, and hypertension while still a child.

If you’re worried about your child’s weight, talk to your pediatrician. Be prepared to report on his or her eating habits and activity level. Just using the standard body mass index (BMI) is not as reliable a measure of fatness for children, especially across different ages and degrees of maturity, as it is for adults who have attained their peak height.

Lack of physical activity is the number one reason kids become overweight. Many children simply aren’t moving their bodies enough to burn off the calories they take in. For the most part, a lifestyle with a lack of physical activity and a lot of inactivity (particularly television viewing) contributes to obesity in children. The effect of television viewing on obesity risk is of particular interest because not only does it reduce physical activity, but kids seem to consume excessive amounts of energydense foods while watching it.

Those foods include fast food, soft drinks, sweets, and sugar-

sweetened breakfast cereals that are heavily advertised during prime child viewing times.

A second significant reason kids put on weight is family history: if a child is overweight then very likely at least one of the parents is as well. Of course genetics plays a role with weight, but if the family environment is one of poor eating or exercising habits, then a child may be at risk for putting on unhealthy amounts of weight. Home environment and families’ eating behaviors have changed dramatically. With both parents working, fast food is a much easier option than home time set aside for a healthy meal. Healthy eating habits—just like smoking, respect, or violence—start at home.

If you consider it a family situation and not just the child’s problem then everyone is treated the same way: there are changes in diet and activity for the whole family, not just that one child. Families are encouraged to have more physical activity in their lives and to choose healthier foods rather than stigmatize a child with a “special diet” which leads to eating disorders. The upshot is: it’s not the child’s problem—it’s the family’s problem.

HOW TO HELP KIDS EAT HEALTHIER Healthy diet guidelines at home include:

• No sodas

• Cut back on juices

• Increase fruits and vegetables

• Reduce high-fat or fried foods

• Take healthy snacks to school—no vending machine food

• Eat smaller portions

• Increase physical activity

n 1964, Casa de Amigos began as a small neighborhood center in east Midland founded by St. Mark’s United Methodist Church and its newly-appointed pastor, Rev. O.A. McBrayer. He found Midland to be a city in “strife, confusion, and concern.” Hispanic and African-American families were moving into the area as the white population moved further west.

Minority families lacked opportunities for education, health care, and decent housing.

HELPING PEOPLE HELP THEMSELVES

Under his leadership, the congregation rented a 500 sq. ft. abandoned cinder block grocery store to begin their mission of bringing equality, opportunity, and education to the expanding minority population. Stick-figures called “Monito Men” were painted in bold colors on the front of the first building, identifying it as a safe and welcoming place for the community. Casa de Amigos offered literacy, pre-school education, teen clubs for boys and girls, and social get-togethers for neighborhood families.

Through the years, many more programs were added including English, adult education, homemaking, kindergarten, tutoring and senior activities.

Last year Casa de Amigos served 4,896 clients in four main areas: Senior Services, Health and Wellness, Social Services, and Youth and Adult Education.

Casa de Amigos maintains a 4,000 sq. ft. senior center where people can come together for a balanced program of social, educational, health, and recreational activities. Seniors are encouraged to participate in three to five activities a day including the exercise room, arts and crafts, games, informational presentations, and a hot lunch. It is a relaxed atmosphere where clients can comfortably approach staff with other social service needs. Many of the seniors take advantage of health screenings through the Health and Wellness Program.

Health and Wellness provides regular screenings to identify and monitor high blood pressure, glucose, and kidney function.

Diabetes education and a Spanish diabetes support group are also available. Clients can be referred to Howard College for teeth cleanings and to a local dentist for one-time emergency help. A volunteer doctor visits once a month to see patients who are uninsured. The Health and Wellness program serves all ages.

The goal of Social Services is to address an individual’s and family’s immediate needs. Casa de Amigos can provide emergency food, clothing, and referrals. Casa de Amigos has joined the West Texas Food Bank to ensure that food will be available in the Food Pantry. Every year, a holiday assistance and school supply drive is held. Donations of children’s winter jackets are distributed at

the Thanksgiving Holiday Turkey give-away. “Friends of Hope” is a new program where donations are raised to help families pay for Christmas gifts. The Midland Target store opens early to accommodate clients shopping for their children’s gifts and the event is always a hit with local media.

Casa de Amigos’ Adult Education Program began in the 1970s with basic reading classes. It grew with community needs to include High School Equivalency, English, Citizenship, and Financial Literacy. Highly individualized, each student develops an instruction plan to meet his or her particular goals.

Chevron’s Take 2 Job Skills Training Program began in 2011. Entirely funded by Chevron, the Take 2 program has served more than 300 clients. The program helps participants break out of the cycle of poverty by gaining employment in high paying industries such as energy and nursing.

Tonya Eckert was recently appointed the new Executive Director of Casa de Amigos. She brings more than 20 years of experience working with families in crisis and a strong background in social services. “I am excited and honored to serve as the Executive Director of Casa de Amigos. To be a part of the next 50 years is a true blessing. I look forward to the future of Casa de Amigos and working with staff, board, stakeholders, and participants in developing opportunities to serve and improve the quality of life throughout our community,” she said.

Tonya envisions the programs of Casa de Amigos growing and adapting. “There is a need to incorporate computer education in English and GED classes and to address computer needs for after school tutoring. I also envision creating a college scholarship for GED graduates and after school participants. Upcoming goals include expanding existing classes and adding new classes of community interest such as master gardening.

We plan to renovate and maximize the use of space in the facility. We will continue to forge strong partnerships with businesses and build community relationships,” she said.

From February to April, Casa de Amigos’ Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, known as the VITA program, is in full swing. Four hundred clients are seen by our volunteer tax preparers. The IRS trains and certifies the volunteers, many of whom have a financial background in banking or accounting.

VITA is now established nationwide at community centers, banks, and military bases. Last year, Casa de Amigos’ VITA program helped low to moderate income tax payers receive, on average, a $1,500 refund per tax return. That’s than half a million dollars refunded and put back into the economy.

For the past fifty-one years, Casa de Amigos has been a respected and trusted Midland resource where people can achieve the highest level of selfsufficiency in the community. For many more years to come, Casa de Amigos will continue its mission of “helping people help themselves.”

Continued from page 4 bloody diarrhea in less than an hour? Yep. Any kind of detergent, paint, even moth balls—all of these are a risk of poisoning for a curious kid who might be able to get to them.

Add to the list of poisonous materials some automotive substances that I’ll bet are in your garage—antifreeze (kidney failure), windshield washer liquid (blindness), and gasoline for the lawn mower. In fact, any hydrocarbon (including furniture polish, lamp oil, kerosene, lighter fluid, motor oil, paint thinner), is a poison risk; hydrocarbons are one of the leading causes of poisoning death in children.

Obviously, insecticides and pesticides (including rat poison) are potentially dangerous, as are materials you may keep in your kitchen or utility room, like cleaning products such as drain, toilet bowl, oven cleaners, and rust removers. Your bathroom may pose risk also, with medicines, cosmetics, pain medications, thermometers, antiseptics, cough and cold medications, antihistamines, and contraceptives. Elsewhere in the house there may be arts and crafts supplies, office supplies, and flaking paint—all poison hazards.

Children aren’t the only ones at risk of poisoning.

Adults account for more than 9 out of 10 poisoning deaths. Grownups generally don’t drink antifreeze or eat mothballs, but they have their own set of poison hazards. Like children, adults—par ticularly older adults—risk poisoning through the ingestion of medications, but for different reasons. Fifty percent of seniors take three or more prescriptions, but half of those have no regular routine for taking their medications. Seniors have greater sensitivity to drugs.

And many seniors have vision

problems. All these factors contribute to taking the wrong medication, the wrong dosage, and inadvertently mixing medications that may interact badly. Senior adult medication exposures account for 45% of all poisonings and 41% of all poisonrelated deaths in the U.S. So how can we prevent poisoning? Keeping poisonhazard substances away from curious children is pretty simple, but it’s not always easy. Be conscious of where and how you store poison hazards, and put them high out of reach and/or locked up, whether it’s in the kitchen, utility room, bathroom, or garage. Use child-resistant prescription medicine packaging. Use household products according to label directions. Store medicines and products in their original containers. With older folks and medications, it’s not as easy. One thing you can do is discard expired medications, which may help reduce confusion about what to take. Read the label, follow the directions, and use as directed by your primary healthcare provider. And lay out an easy-to-understand plan for what medicine(s) to take when. More than anything, just use common sense when using and storing substances that can be a poison hazard.

What do you do if someone has been poisoned?

If medicine has been swallowed, do not give anything to the victim until you call the Poison Center (800–222–1222). If non-medicine and the patient is conscious and can swallow, give a little milk or water. Call 800–222–1222. If the poison has been inhaled, get them to fresh air and avoid breathing the fumes yourself. Call 800–222–1222.

On the skin, remove contaminated clothing and flood the skin with water for 10 minutes. Call 800–222–1222. In the eye, rinse with lukewarm water for 15–20 minutes. Call 800–222–1222.

Although she has achieved these great victories, she still faces the challenge of keeping her balance and controlling where she goes. She has gained some independence and a lot of confidence with her Diana Venegas at PBRC self-help skills and this is a source of great pride and joy for Diana and her family. Her therapy team is amazed at how much she has changed since her first day of therapy in July 2011. Cerebral palsy is a lifetime battle and as she meets each milestone and victory there will be more complicated skills that will challenge her. The PBRC team will be with her each step of the way.

Continued from page 11 Weight control for kids is not the same as weight control for adults. Physicians don’t often recommend that an overweight child lose weight, since that can lead to growth problems. Instead, they like to see them grow into their weight by making smarter food choices and getting plenty of exercise.

When improving a child’s eating habits, say experts, the most successful strategies involve the whole family. To teach children to eat more slowly so they’re more aware of how much they’ve consumed, some dieticians recommend that parents play a game in which family members are required to put down their forks between each bite at meals; if someone slips up, he has to do something, say, clear the dishes from the table. This exercise also helps kids recognize when they’re full. If there are foods you don’t want your child to have, then keep those foods out of the house. If you only have soda on Friday nights, that applies to everybody, not just the child with a weight issue.

Pay attention to food restrictions and to being preoccupied with weight control. Children afraid they are going to have to go hungry become preoccupied with food and overeat when they have a chance. Parents should be responsible for meal and snack planning. The child gets to decide how much to eat or whether to eat at all. Let even the heavyset child eat as much as he or she is hungry for.

For example: a cookie may have 50 calories while a piece of fruit has 60 or 70 calories. But that doesn’t take into account the nutritional content of the items. A child might eat three or four cookies, which are mainly sugar, whereas the fruit has fiber that will fill her up.

Parents who are not sure about how to serve a more balanced meal should seek the guidance of a nutritionist or pediatrician. Cutting back by cooking with light oils, skim milk, and egg whites may provide a tremendous change. Children may also be resistant to such changes. But over time, and by providing consistency, they will adapt and begin to see results. Parents can also help by serving foods in proper portion sizes on their children’s plates, rather than serving family style where a large platter of food is placed on the table. Encourage kids to eat smaller portions and then go back for more if they’re still hungry. The key is to put the foods you want them to eat right in front of them, rather than waiting for them to request the food, or even asking if they would like it.

Fruits and vegetables are wonderful foods, and children can have almost all they want. Serve vegetables as “naked” as possible—don’t put heavy cheese sauces or margarine on them. Make a vegetable tray at the beginning of the week and keep it in the refrigerator in easy view with a light ranch dressing. Having a bowl of fruit on the counter within easy reach and in full view also helps.

The easiest place to make changes is with snacks.

Trade in sugary snacks for air-popped popcorn and fresh fruit. Soda should be replaced with water and minimally sweetened juice. The typical teenager drinks about two cans of soft drink each day, containing almost 20 teaspoons of sugar. Children also choose soft drinks over milk, which is leading to less protein, calcium, and vitamins A and C in their diet. Cereals should be high in fiber and low in sweeteners.

Even more important, parents should encourage their kids to get active by having them play outside after school whenever possible or signing them up for swimming lessons or another physical activity.

Making exercise a family activity is one of the best ways to encourage activity. Ride bikes on the weekend, play ball, go for a hike together, anything that involves getting outside and getting active. Set a good example and exercise with your children: try dancing to some favorite music or participating in sports whenever possible to increase socialization with exercise.

If healthier snacking habits and increased activity don’t help to stabilize weight, it may be time for more serious measures. But instead of cutting back on a child’s overall calorie intake, parents should focus on serving more balanced meals.

If you don’t want them to watch as much television, don’t have one in their bedroom. Keep the television off during meals. You are less likely to overeat if the TV is off and the family is focused on family time. an apple a day march 2015 19

leep….as kids, we fight it. As adults, we cherish it. Many things can cause us to become sleep deprived. But whatever the culprit for your insomnia, there are other things you can change today that can help you catch some zzz’s tonight.

There are several ways to prepare your mind and body for sleep other than the known facts of reducing caffeine, sugar, and alcohol in the late afternoons. The first and foremost is to make your bedroom a “work free zone.” Don’t take your work to bed with you. Set a bedtime and leave your unfinished tasks for tomorrow. This will help you turn your brain “off” to life stresses.

The next step is to reduce all visual stimulation.

This includes watching TV or using any other electronic screens in bed. While a good Seinfeld re-run may help take your mind off your problems for a moment, the blue light emitted from your TV, phone, and computer can disrupt your circadian clock and the production of melatonin.

Amber-colored night lights and light bulbs in the bedroom will not disrupt circadian rhythms and actually help you relax your eyes and brain. If you’re like me and enjoy reading on your Kindle before bed, purchase a pair of amber-colored glasses. They cost about $10 and filter all of the blue light without having to change your light bulbs. Try eliminating computer work, TV, and other blue light emitting electronic devices at least 1 hour prior to bedtime.

And make your bedroom as dark as possible: put a piece of tape over the little lights on electronic devices, get black out curtains if your bedroom window faces a street lamp or lighted buildings, and cover your alarm clock.

Research shows the ideal temperature for restful sleep is 66°–68°F. A mild drop in body temperature helps induce sleep. Try adjusting your thermostat for a few days to find the perfect temperature where you get the most sleep.

Make a relaxing bedtime routine. Some exercises I have my clients do about an hour before bed are: • Set a bedtime and wake time and stick to it!

• Make a list of everything you need to do for tomorrow.

• Prepare your breakfast and everything you need to take with you the next day so you are not rushed and stressed in the morning.

Then, relax your body and mind: • Take a warm shower or Epsom salt bath or foot soak (see recipe in this issue!).

• Drink sleepy tea or other non-caffeinated hot tea.

• Listen to soft music or read (wearing your amber glasses, of course).

These suggestions really work, at least from my experience. But I’m always chasing a better night’s rest—especially if it doesn’t involve taking medications.

So, I’m going to give you my newest finds.

Recently, I purchased a sound machine. The sound of running water (rain, ocean, river) has been found to have therapeutic effects, so I picked the ocean waves setting. It worked for me.

And finally, I must give props to my massage therapist who suggested sleeping with a body pillow. I’m a side sleeper, and my hips and shoulder would constantly get out of alignment. Eventually the pain would disrupt my sleep. After adding the pillow between my legs and arms, my hips stay aligned and my shoulder doesn’t hurt.

Try incorporating some or all of these ideas. They are not expensive or hard to find. Look for ways nutrition, exercise, and my favorite tracker can help you sleep in upcoming articles.

I

am sure there are individuals who are completely satisfied with everything about their appearance; however, I believe they are a rare exception. People come in all shapes, sizes, and a rainbow of color combinations, and most—especially women—want to be different than they are. The petite blonde longs to be a willowy brunette with dark seductive eyes, while that brunette wishes she was a tiny blonde with big blue eyes and complains that men are always more attracted to blondes. However, the secret of being attractive to others, though perhaps not a raving beauty, is to embrace what you are and be the very best you can be with your shape, size, and coloring.

Look at yourself in a full length mirror. How does everything work together? Is your hair right for you? Do you need to lose weight? (Do any of us not need to?) Do you wear too much or too little makeup? What style of clothing suits you best?

What are your best colors? Ask a friend to honestly critique you on your overall appearance and tell you what you would be smart to change.

Is it time for a different hair style? Magazines are a good place to begin. Look at other women and evaluate what looks good on them. Would that work for you? Consider what is possible with your particular hair and lifestyle. Is some highlighting in order? Does your hair overpower you? Is the style too dated or too young-looking? Now might be the time to try something new. Go to a professional hair stylist, if it is within your budget.

What about your skin? Could you take better care of it with moisturizer and stimulation? Are you faithful about nightly cleansing? Both soap and hot water dry out your skin. Remember this is the only face and body you will ever have so treat them kindly. As I continue to preach, a broad spectrum sunscreen of at least a SPF of 30 is the most important single skin care item. Use makeup carefully. Try not to overdo and check in natural light for day wear. On

the other hand, do use makeup to enhance and highlight your best features. Remember, you live in a world where others take advantage all the latest in the world of beauty.

Take your body to task and work in a time to exercise and keep it firm and healthy. Exercise plays such a vital roll in our well-being, It stimulates our circulatory system, rushing fresh blood throughout our systems. That lovely glow you see on the face of someone who has just completed an aerobic activity is evidence of this fact.

Even a two mile walk causes your endorphins to be stimulated and can give you a sense of well being. Hearts and lungs function better when they are exercised.

Why not make this spring a time to renew you? After all, this is something only you can do for yourself.

Remember, a smile is an instant face lift. It is also a blessing to those around you.

Bath Soak

by Kim Clinkenbeard, CPT, FNS Epsom salt Baking soda For a standard sized bath tub: Fill the tub with water that’s as hot as you can stand it and fill it to a level that most of your body is submerged. Add 1–3 cups of Epsom salt to the tub (I usually use 2 cups).

Before you soak: Dry brush—towards your heart (stimulates lymphatic system, helps to regulate hormones, exfoliates the skin, and promotes the detoxification process through the skin).

(If you are sick just add 1 cup. Children under 60 lbs: ½ cup. Children 60–100 lb: 1 cup.)

Add ¼–1 cup baking soda. (I usually use about ¼ cup).

Note: I have found lavender and eucalyptus Epsom salts at Walgreens. They are especially relaxing. But adding an essential oil diffuser to your bathroom will emit those soothing aromatherapy scents as well. If you add essential oils to your bath water, be sure you only add a couple of drops; and not directly to your skin unless you mix it with another carrier oil.

Soak for about 20 minutes. If you are sick, only soak for 10–15 minutes. You may feel worse afterwards if you are sick or in need of a major detox. This is normal.

I suggest doing these baths right before bed. (for: relaxation, muscle soreness, sleep aide, detoxify, aids in digestions [bowels], softens and heals
