WELCOME
TO THE WINTER/SPRING 2023 ISSUE OF RESIDE
Welcome to the Winter edition of RESIDE. As we transition into a new season, we are reminded of all the beauty Northern Michigan has to offer. Winter is a special time of year for many of us as things slow down a bit from the summer surge. Embracing our natural resources, ski resorts, winter parks and frozen lakes that offer so many different outdoor activities. While some would rather skip winters here, we find over the past years many people are embracing it.
The real estate market continues to be strong in Northern Michigan. We are continuing to see lower inventories across our different markets. With lower inventories, our agents are working harder than ever for their clients to find that right property, many times before reaching the general market. Connecting buyers and sellers has always been important for agents, but now more than ever. Building and cultivating these relationships with buyers and sellers is key to providing the best real estate experience for those looking for a new home or property.
Harbor Sotheby’s International Realty’s commitment to serving the community is also a top priority for our agents. Aligning yourself with one of our experienced agents will give you an edge in finding that right home, or positioning yourself in a competitive market when selling. Sotheby’s International Realty has a marketing plan that has a proven track record of reaching engaged buyers and sellers.
If you’re in the market to purchase, or looking to sell your property now or in the future, we’d love to start that conversation with you. Harbor Sotheby’s International Realty has a talented team that can show you what sets us apart from other brokerages. We have the experience and the resources to help make your real estate transaction seamless and we perform with the highest standard of practices. We are looking forward to another prosperous year serving our clients and making dreams a reality.

Heidi Shearer, Sales AgentHeidi and her husband Bill fell in love with Bay Harbor and northern Michigan in July 1995. A weekend getaway led to property ownership at the budding Bay Harbor development! It was a decision that would influence the trajectory of their family and future. In that season Heidi contemplated becoming a real estate professional since it was a natural passion to share this gem with anyone who would listen! She gave tours and brought family and friends to this area for years. Living in Midland, Michigan at the time didn’t allow the real estate career to come to fruition.
After 25 years, Heidi and Bill decided to make northern Michigan their permanent residence. A decision that has proven to be fantastic. Their children (20 & 23 years old now) call Petoskey home only after 3 years. This decision opened the door to become an ambassador of the area through real estate!
As an entrepreneur for 25 years and a leadership coach for 5 years, she knows that valuing and serving people with excellence is her highest business objective. She has learned how to be flexible, weather the unexpected and persevere through obstacles. Some things come easy others take wisdom, perseverance, and skill. Heidi loves partnering with the marketing expertise of Harbor Sotheby’s International Realty. It is a perfect fit!
When Heidi isn’t focusing on her clients, she’s focused on family and the next generation. She genuinely loves people. She and her husband host a ‘Summer GAP Internship’ for young people between the ages of 18-27. They help them find jobs in the area, then develop them through a weekly ‘Life & Leadership from a Biblical Worldview’ session. So far, they have invested in 15 participants over the past two years.
Heidi has a degree in International Business from CMU, a Masters in Social Work from UofM, a Certificate in Analytical Psychology, Natural Health Studies, Leadership Coach with John C. Maxwell Team, a Colson Fellow, a local church member, President of Orchards of Crooked Tree condo association, and a Rotarian. At the end of the day, she wants to be known as a person with wisdom and someone you can trust.

Spotlight Artist
Mary Bea McWatters
Are you a collector looking for your next favorite artist? Look no further! Mary Bea McWatters has been an artist for her entire life, and still seeks the childlike wonder of creative curiosity every day. Growing up in Petoskey, she earned a fine art degree from Northern Michigan University in Marquette. For the past 20+ years, she has been traveling the world, gathering inspiration, and creating beautiful and inspiring artwork along the way. Her adventure has led her to living and creating in Vermont, Hawaii, Mackinac Island, and back to her hometown of Petoskey, where she lives with her husband Greg, and cat Luna.
Mary Bea’s work brings the healing powers of nature into focus, celebrating the patterns that unite everything in the natural world. Her work is created in a continual process of exploration and adventure. Her daily practice of art includes hiking and mountain biking in the Petoskey/ Harbor Springs area’s beautiful nature trails, kayaking the waters of Little Traverse Bay, and snowboarding at Nub’s Nob and The Highlands. Curiosity informs much of Mary Bea’s artwork, and she is continually discovering new hobbies that inspire her- baking bread, wood carving, gardening, sewing, and guitar, to name a few.
Of her many creative pursuits, painting every day is the most important and compelling way that Mary Bea creates art. She is fascinated by the different social, cultural, visual, and emotional structures that can be represented through painting. Mary Bea’s large-scale paintings can evoke strong emotions and nostalgia for the beauty and peace that are found in the outdoors. Her work is featured at Mary Bea Art, her studio and gallery on the bank of the Bear River in Petoskey, and on her website, MaryBea-Art. com. You can also find her work at Northgoods and Yoga Roots in Petoskey, Hanni Gallery in Harbor Springs, and at Mackinac’s Little Gallery.

Wander into NOMAD
by Parker MarshallOne of my favorite things to do as an agent is to introduce my clients, particularly those moving here and unfamiliar with the area, to local insider knowledge on the things that make northern Michigan special. Businesses, and restaurants in particular, add to the attraction of the region, and this attraction is vital to our seasonal pull. So, if I were to name a restaurant to ensure an impression of regional capability and culinary excellence, I would send him or her to Nomad. Full disclosure: this is not a sponsored article, Nomad is not paying me to write this, though I am working with them this summer on music programming, that is a side note, as I would still write this anyway, if only to hook an out-of-towner as a matter of local cultural pride.
Upon first arrival, a guest is greeted in a rotund entry with a marbled floor. Beyond, the restaurant itself is open, airy, with decor and furniture of contemporary design. Natural light fills the room from the west as windows face the bay of Bay Harbor. In the summer, one can sit on the patio with a cocktail and watch the boats and sunset. Sophisticated elements, from the menu to the cutlery and plate design, with attention to refined minutia and detail, contribute to atmosphere.
The menu is presented with instructions that the dishes are meant to be shared, and it is easy to see why, as the most unique offering of the restaurant is the creativity behind the menu items. A flavor pairing of note is the kimchi carbonara; composed of udon noodles, a sunny egg, and kimchi. One of the appetizers is listed as a foie gras pbj. Note peanut butter is absent, but here the seared foie gras paired with the blackberry jam- creates a similar palate harmony. Dishes like this remind me of the process of creating what is called an “edit” in music production, where instrumentals from one song are combined with vocals from another, or peppered with samples, to create a new song. This is highly stimulating to an audience familiar with both songs, as they now hear each in a new way, and in similar method, Executive Chef Eric Basta does the same with food, by composing an equally stimulating experience by combining non-traditional elements to be delivered in the form of a new dish.
This outside-the-box take was contrary to his training in classical French cuisine. “I want to do things people don’t expect” said the chef when asked about his unique philosophy on food. “We can all go to the places that have a burger, but what we’re trying to do here is: be different. I’m setting the bar higher than I could ever achieve, and try to get to a place where I’ve never been before.”
While this type of creativity may be more common in a major metropolitan area, it is rare for northern Michigan, and should be celebrated, as divergence from the standard fare is not without risks. Granted, you will find familiar items on Nomad’s menu, albeit with a sophisticated alteration.
Nomad is brought to you by the same people who brought you Maple + Batter, this area’s now iconic brunch spot. They are the Morrison family, who originally summered in the Little Traverse Bay area before calling it home. They consist of Jamie, Bryant, Laura and Philip. Philip and Bryant are brothers. After the success of Maple + Batter, which had built its brand as a brunch destination, they moved to open Nomad in May of 2022, just down the street. The Morrisons were inspired by the Detroit food scene and wanted to bring it here, with shareable dishes to focus on the social aspect of dining, and a menu comprising different dishes from around the globe.
“A lot of our plates were designed to be larger so they could be shared with the table. We designed our main plates to be shared. A lot of thought went into how the dishes were composed on that shareable component.” Philip said.
The name Nomad came from this concept, as did the vision for the space, as a nomad isn’t known for a singular identity, with the ability to continuously change. From the name, came the design, as they knew they wanted to go with more earth tones, simplified to its basic elements with a concrete floor, Napa wood tables and beams, and mixed metals.
After the concept was established, and Executive Chef Eric Basta and pastry/sous Chef Hans Jessen were on board, the menu creation became the next focus. Eric and Hans presented 50 dishes to the executive team across four sessions, with 10-15 different dishes each time, so that they may experience the menu as a guest would, only to narrow the selection down to 24, with each dish being evaluated on presentation, portion size, ingredient composition, and find a balance to create a diverse portfolio to allow guests to engage with the menu in different ways.
After the dishes were selected, the owners, along with the chefs, designed the back of the house to create the stations necessary based on the selected menu items. “It was full “trust the chef.” We were looking to give the people in this space, including ourselves the best opportunity to succeed, and have the best guest experience and to do that, we knew we had to make an investment in the kitchen. They were very excited to think strategically and orchestrate the kitchen equipment for purpose and quality. There might be ten steps of execution to bring a dish from kitchen to table, and the right kitchen equipment is essential.” When asked on allowing the chefs carte blanche on the menu, Bryant said “It was important to give the Chefs the opportunity to create what they were passionate about, and provide the corresponding equipment to execute their vision.”
While they expected a slow build up after opening, they were surprised to be busy from day one. “We were ecstatic about how well received we were.” said Philip, and referred to the restaurant being a beehive throughout the summer. Winter is always a challenge for businesses in the area, as the population drops. Businesses have to get creative, and so, Nomad unveils new menu items throughout the year.
I am looking forward to reserving Nomad for my real estate clients and friends visiting the area for special occasions. Of the menu items, my favorite dishes were the 10oz prime filet with a truffle cognac mushroom sauce, as well as the spicy Italian sausage & veal bucatini ragù with burrata and pesto.
Nomad is located at 795 Front Street in Bay Harbor. Its hours are 4:30 - 9:00 in the winter, and which will extend later in the evening throughout the summer.

Women Owned Businesses Blazing Their Own Trail
Let’s face it - women have always been trail-blazers, but there was a time when most women were in smaller roles in the business world, the times are certainly changing on that front.
42% of small businesses are currently owned by women in the United States. An average of 1,821 new businesses start per day by women in 2022. 16% of startups in the United States had at least one female founder. Comparing that to the numbers in years past: In 1972, women owned only 4 percent of all American businesses. By 2018, 22.35 percent of American businesses that employed people in the United States are owned by women. That tells us that there has been a 20% increase in just 4 years.
A “boom” of women entering the business world happened during World War II, as they were filling jobs that men had left behind to serve in the military. Some women took these jobs as a patriotic duty, while others started businesses of their own. One of the successful businesses at that time was Estée Lauder, who was working on the idea for her beauty products which officially launched in 1946, a year after the war ended.
Many women who were also mothers began to open home-based businesses. Lillian Vernon, while pregnant with her first child, started her own business investing money for wedding gifts and mailing out catalogs in which she would fill orders right from her own dining room table.
In the late 1960s and 1970s, the women’s movement had a profound effect on the influx of female entrepreneurs including Ruth Hertel who opened the famed Ruth Chris Steak House in 1965, which turned into an extremely successful restaurant franchise all over the United States. This also led the way for successful business women including Mary Kay Ash (Mary Kay Cosmetics), Martha Stewart and Melanie Perkins who created Canva, the web-designed app that is used by millions today.
Our local communities also have an abundance of fabulous women-owned businesses. They are driven, hard working ladies who are experts in what they do and have a passion to share that passion with others. Here we will feature a few of these great businesses.

Julienne Tomatoes Deli & Bakery
Owner: Julie Adams juliennetomatoes.comThe building that houses Julienne Tomatoes has quite a legacy. Located on 421 Howard Street in downtown Petoskey, the building has been there since 1897 according to the historical archives. A feed store, meat market, small grocery market all have been in that same spot. The longest running business was a printing company (currently known today as the Petoskey News Review) and was in that location for 48 years. Grain Train Natural Food Market was also in that building for a few years. In 2003, Julie Adams opened Julienne Tomatoes, with the dream of serving sandwiches, soups and pastries with the freshest ingredients, including using many of our local farms and resources. Julie is a hands-on owner and very well-known in the community. You can find her not only whipping up her amazing culinary dishes in the kitchen, but also at the register taking orders and waiting on and greeting her guests. The cafe is truly a town favorite, receiving rave reviews from not only the community, but patrons that are here on vacation during the busy tourist season. Another amazing aspect of Julie and her business is her involvement with many non-profit organizations in the area including Petoskey Rotary Club Charities, Blissfest Organization, Manna Food Project, Women’s Resource Center and Tipp of the Mitt Watershed Council just to name a few. This sweet little brunch spot is a cherished business downtown, a place to meet friends and be greeted with a warm smile. Also the perfect place to order your next celebration dessert such as the Fruit and Vanilla Torte with three layers of vanilla chiffon, layered with custard and strawberries. Finished with whipped cream, toasted almonds and fresh sliced fruit.
Yoga Roots and Healing Arts
Owner: Tiffany Lenau yogarootspetoskey.comBack in 2007, owner Tiffany Lenau didn’t expect to open her own yoga studio. She had spent the last two years teaching classes at North Central Michigan College, as well as local gyms and retirement communities, but she kept feeling the universe telling her that she “should open her own studio” and Yoga Roots was born. In November 2022, Yoga Roots and Healing Arts celebrated 15 years of offering a complete open healing space, as well as educating and teaching the art of yoga. The business was founded on the idea of creating a safe and sacred space where students could heal, learn and grow.
Yoga Roots is not simply a “yoga studio”, but also a teaching center, dedicated to teaching others how to be yoga instructors as well, with a commitment to continue to learn and grow in the healing arts. Tiffany uses the approach in her studio that it goes further than a yoga session, but also teaches healing and empowerment in daily living.
Tiffany also believes in the power of sound healing, an experience using Tibetan singing bowls, alchemy crystal singing bowls and gongs, after she had her own journey of healing from sound therapy after an accident. The sound therapy brings internal peace through meditations and the rhythm of the sounds. It is something everyone needs to experience to completely understand the benefits to the human mind and body.
Yoga Roots has a well-trained staff ready to introduce everyone to the healing arts and happily supports all ages, body types, genders and fitness labels. They are there to help you feel safe and comfortable. Inner peace and healing begins at Yoga Roots in downtown Petoskey.

Local Treasure
Crooked Tree Arts Center
Crooked Tree Arts Council was founded in 1971 by a group of local residents to sponsor and encourage activities in the arts in Emmet and Charlevoix Counties. The founders had three goals in mind when establishing the organization: provide high quality cultural experiences for the residents of Northern Michigan; encourage area artists and provide a means by which those artists could advance their professional careers; and form an umbrella organization that could provide cultural services for the entire two-county area, avoiding the unnecessary expenses inherent in a duplication of services by several small, independent organizations.
It was founding member Sally Clark who suggested the organization be named Crooked Tree. The phrase referred to a noted local landmark important to the indigenous peoples of Northern Michigan. The landmark was utilized as a gathering place for trading, and Crooked Tree Arts Center was to be a gathering place within the community for those interested in the arts.
In the beginning, Crooked Tree Arts Center operated out of the founders’ homes, as well as a space in the Petoskey Public Library and at North Central Michigan College. In 1978, they purchased the United Methodist Church in downtown Petoskey. Renovations that were made on the building which has stood since 1890, were funded by local and private fundraising efforts. The building did transform further with an extensive renovation in 2003.
For over five decades, Crooked Tree Arts Center has developed excellent visual and performing arts programs, community outreach, and opportunities for artists and art lovers alike. Managed by a professional staff with guidance from the board of directors and the helping hands of numerous volunteers, the organization is recognized as one of the community’s more important assets.
Membership has grown to over 3,000, with members living throughout Michigan and the country. Thanks to the support of the Northern Michigan community, Crooked Tree Arts Center is able to serve over 250,000 annually, with its branches reaching farther each year to spread its mission of inspiring and enriching lives through the arts. Crooked Tree Arts Center - Petoskey features four galleries, a theater, dance studio, classrooms, a culinary arts kitchen, and much more. The art galleries are free and open to the public, and class offerings can be found on their website, crookedtree.org/petoskey.

THE JOJO COOKIE STORY:
It all started in the crazy year of 2020. With an abundance of time on her hands, quarantine led Jordyn to take her passion for baking to a whole new level when she set out to create the perfect cookie. She aimed to craft something thick and chewy with crisp golden edges on the outside and a slightly under baked center. She enjoyed dedicating long hours of research and a lot of time testing batch after batch to try different recipes and ingredient combinations. Finally, Jordyn produced JoJo’s first and finest: the chocolate chip cookie.
After the development of several new flavors and a lot of taste testing, Colin quickly came to believe that this could become so much more than just a hobby. When they shared cookies with friends and family, the feedback was overwhelming.
Not long after their wedding, Colin talked Jordyn into taking the leap into business ownership and together they started JoJo’s Cookie Co. Jordyn resigned from her job in the insurance industry so she could fully dedicate herself to their new company, and since then it has grown tremendously. From JoJo’s humble beginnings in the kitchen of Colin and Jordyn’s first home in Saginaw, MI to their new storefront in Petoskey, MI, their goal remains to create “Smiles from Scratch” one cookie at a time!
Jordyn and Colin - Owners of JoJo’s Cookies
JoJo’s Cookies is located at 2611 Charlevoix Avenue in Petoskey. The great news is...you can’t just choose one flavor, so buy a variety, and every single one will be your new favorite. They are a welcome addition to Petoskey and the perfect place to cure your sweet tooth cravings. For more information, visit jojoscookiecompany.com.
Raven Hill Discovery Center
In 1991, Raven Hill Discovery Center was the beginning of a dream, when the Center was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) corporation. That dream became a reality in 1992, when Raven Hill opened to the public. Founders, Cheri and Tim Leach, imagined a place that would provide hands-on experiences through programs, exhibits and facilities that would connect science, history and the arts for all ages.
Located on 175 acres in East Jordan, Raven Hill expands time from prehistory, to modern, to the future and from our world to beyond the universe. Minds of the young and old are challenged and stretched through experiences that expand the brain and link ideas. The Center uses informal education to tear down walls - opening doors that connect learning for children and adults. Something at the Center catches the visitor’s eye and leads to a new experience, which strengthens an individual’s understanding and problem-solving skills. That experience might be connecting the science and history of copper during a copper pendant art class. It might be families using physics to create a ramp system to slow the golf ball down on the Rollaway in the Museum. Visitors to the Alternative Energy House might see “the light bulb go on” and better understand the sequence of energy conversion from solar to chemical (batteries) to electrical to light. No matter—program, exhibit or facility—the agenda is the same: making connections that point to new ways of thinking and new experiences for Raven Hill visitors.
At Raven Hill, visitors experience a “new world” in the main museum, learn about animals in the exotic animal room, and further expand their explorations and minds outside in the Music Garden; Beyond Jurassic Park walk; One-Room School House; ET Building; Accessible Tree House and the Ancient World.
Raven Hill Discovery Center’s vision is to provide a unique environment for quality hands-on learning for people of all ages. At Raven Hill Discovery Center, we help visitors discover the world of science, history and the arts. Connections emerge through constantly evolving exhibits and facilities, thereby helping participants make sense of the world as it was, is, and might be.
A rural setting with pond, swamp, forest and fields, Raven Hill Discovery Center provides an environment for discovery and the space to learn, create, grow and play. We celebrate the joy of lifelong learning and the appreciation of nature and our earth.
