WELCOME

TO THE SUMMER/FALL 2024 ISSUE OF RESIDE

Welcome to our 2024 Summer/Fall edition of RESIDE. We’re excited to see the return of many summer residents from their winter havens, eagerly anticipating the joys of the upcoming season. Despite the mild winter in Northern Michigan, our ski resorts spared no effort in ensuring optimal conditions through meticulous snowmaking and grooming, keeping the trails open and inviting.

We thank our longstanding advertising partners: Audi Petoskey, Cottage Company, Walstrom Marine, Great Lakes Center for the Arts and Salvatore’s and Vernales. Additionally, we extend a warm welcome to our new advertisers: Stockton Mortgage, Maple & Batter, Brandy’s Harbortown and Nomad, Torch Lake Gallery, CenterPointe Yacht Services, Fireside Hearth & Leisure, O’Brien Harris, and Harbor Springs Mattress Company. These local businesses are leaders in their respective industries, and we encourage you to explore their offerings.

So, how is the real estate market? Lower inventories persist, contributing to a robust real estate landscape. Following significant price surges since mid-2020, we are witnessing a shift towards a more balanced market, with prices stabilizing across various price points. Interest rates remain steady for the foreseeable future, and as we enter an election year, historical trends suggest minimal changes. For sellers, the present remains opportune, while buyers may soon find favorable prospects as we progress into the latter part of the year.

Spring brings a flurry of activity to Bay Harbor’s Village, with revitalization efforts underway on Main Street. Additionally, we’re excited to announce the grand opening of Brandy’s Harbortown, a newly renovated restaurant formerly known as Knot Just a Bar. With expanded outdoor seating and a delightful Cabana Bar, it promises to be a highlight of the season. Bay Harbor is also celebrating its 30th Anniversary this summer, with live entertainment, “light up the docks” at the marina and an evening drone show on July 6th. Come celebrate with them!

Another great asset to this area is the Petoskey Wine Region which is made up of 16 wineries in 7 different counties, and covering over 2,700 square miles. For the wineries that make up the Region, each started with a family’s passion to create one-of-a-kind tastes and deliver unique experiences. All which reflects their growing craftsmanship. Be sure to drop by one of our area’s local wineries and enjoy a wonderful array of wine and genuine northern Michigan hospitality.

We anticipate another bustling summer season, reuniting with family and friends. We’re passionate about real estate and would love to have a conversation with you if you’re in the market to purchase or sell. Our affiliation with Sotheby’s International Realty affords us the privilege of reaching a global audience, ensuring your property receives unparalleled exposure. We have the experience and the resources to help make your real estate transaction seamless, adhering to the highest standards of excellence.

Thank you for picking up our RESIDE magazine and we wish you a safe and unforgettable summer and fall in beautiful northern Michigan.

Warm regards,

WE ARE AGENTS...

Enjoy our series highlighting the Harbor Sotheby’s International Realty team - focusing on what makes them exceptional at work, at play, in their community and beyond.

Bill Shearer, Real Estate Professional

Bill and his wife Heidi fell in love with Bay Harbor and northern Michigan in July 1995. A weekend getaway ‘up north’ led to waterfront property ownership in the brand new Bay Harbor development. In 2000 they invested at Crooked Tree Golf Course to make space for their expanding family. For 29 years, Bill and Heidi have been exploring and sharing this beautiful location with family and friends. In 2019 the Shearer family became full time residents and now enjoy all four seasons. This has proved to be a fantastic opportunity.

Before life in northern Michigan, Bill had a global career with The Dow Chemical Company. He was area controller for Dow Asia and Dow Europe. His strong work ethic, which he learned growing up on a farm in Ontario, Canada, and a gift with numbers was the right combination that opened the door to this fulfilling career. After his Dow career, he and Heidi became entrepreneurs which opened up a whole new world for them. This time it was all about developing aspiring entrepreneurs as business mentors and leadership coaches. Their highest values are serving people with integrity and excellence.

As their adventurous life continues, Bill joined Heidi at Harbor Sotheby’s International Realty in the spring of 2024. They formed the ShearerTeam to serve their clients together. Bill’s financial background, broad experiences and the marketing expertise of Harbor Sotheby’s International Realty are a perfect fit to serve people in their real estate journey in northern Michigan.

Outside of business, Bill and Heidi love their blended family with 21 members and counting! This includes 4 children, spouses, 5 grandchildren, a niece, 2 nephews and Heidi’s parents. They are a rich blessing! Bill loves to golf and shoots his age. You can try to guess what that number is! Feel free to ask him when you meet.

Bill’s bible verse for life, “Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus”. 1Thessalonians 5:16-18

...OF THE EXCEPTIONAL

Craig Stolzenfels, Real Estate Professional

Craig Stolzenfels began his hospitality career while attending West Virginia University almost 31 years ago. After a summer internship at a golf resort overlooking Cheat Lake, Craig realized that hospitality was his passion. He has been fortunate enough to work at some incredible resorts. He began his management career at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort in Pennsylvania, leading a team that earned the coveted AAA 5- Diamond rating and a Forbes Travel Guide 5- Star award. Shortly thereafter, career goals took him and his family to the beautiful British Virgin Islands, where he ran a resort on Virgin Gorda for over 2 ½ years. Biras Creek Resort was a 31 villa ocean front property and was renowned worldwide for its incredible service and high quality culinary expertise. Upon returning to the U.S. Craig was hired to run two ski resort hotels simultaneously. Although he enjoyed the challenge of running Seven Springs Mountain Resort and Hidden Valley Resort, he concluded that small unique properties are where his heart lies. While overseeing 700 rooms and two ski resorts was an exciting opportunity, Craig missed being able to provide a sense of refinement and luxury to resort guests. He was then given the opportunity to take the helm at The Inn at Leola Village, a boutique resort in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. While the property was luxurious, Craig and his family knew the location was not ideal for them.

As fate would have it, Craig was given the opportunity to work for Victor International a second time, to live and work along the shoreline of Lake Michigan at Bay Harbor. “Luxury”, “unique” and “independent” are three descriptors of a property that Craig is drawn to leading; and Village Suites Bay Harbor is the ideal match. Craig has been the General Manager at Village Suites for over six years now. He loves the community, the natural beauty, and even the weather of northern Michigan. It was a natural progression for him to receive his real estate license in August of 2023. He enjoys helping people find the right vacation escape especially when it involves the Marina District and Bay Harbor.

Craig’s family, his wife Carolyne and two children, Reed and Ellie, all agree that Michigan is the perfect home for them. Reed, now 24, loves coming home from the UK to visit. Ellie, who just finished a successful year at Grand Valley, will continue her education in Michigan. Their family enjoys the country life on a small farm with three dogs, five horses, and their African Grey parrot that’s been with them since the very beginning. Craig enjoys skiing at Nub’s Nob or at one of the Boyne Resorts in the winter. Racing on Team Gypsy in the Banhoff Ski League has also been challenging and fun. Craig’s true passion is golf. He thoroughly enjoys golfing in the summer and fall on the area’s world class courses.

Craig has proudly been a Petoskey Rotarian for two years. He serves on the board of the Petoskey Area Visitors Bureau and is currently the board Chair. He also serves on the board for the Bay Harbor Foundation. Craig is very excited for the future in real estate. He finds wearing many hats to be stimulating and challenging. He loves working in Bay Harbor and living in the beautiful countryside of Charlevoix.

Happy 30th Anniversary Bay Harbor!

As Bay Harbor celebrates 30 years this summer, it is a time of reflection on the amazing transformation that a once abandoned cement plant has turned into. On July 12, 1994 with Governor John Engler and thousands of spectators, explosions simultaneously demolished the cement plant smokestacks, and what came next was nothing less than extraordinary.

The visionary behind this beautiful resort community is Chairman of Victor International Corporation and Bay Harbor Company, David V. Johnson who knew from the beginning he would be taking on an amazing challenge, but the vision did not leave him. He could envision Bay Harbor as an exquisite lifestyle with yachts and homes around Bay Harbor Lake, a year-round resort with boutique shopping, fabulous restaurants, a deep water marina and pristine nature preserve carved into a rock quarry and an exquisite golf course nestled along Little Traverse Bay.

Stories are plentiful of work completed on “Bay Harbor Time” (less than half the time required) of incredible odds and the tenacity and quality demanded by the developer in every aspect of the project. Architects, engineers, constructions workers and anyone involved with the incredible transformation that became Bay Harbor say it was truly a life-changing experience.

Four distinct characteristics of the neighborhoods in Bay Harbor emerged: Woodland Living, Fairway Living, Harbor Living and Village Living that still prevail to this day, all featuring a range of unique living choices, from condominiums to golf course and bungalows to waterfront estates. Low density planning was the key to Bay Harbor’s success, with use of parklands and nature preserves which drew high acclaim from environmentalists.

30 years later, Bay Harbor continues to thrive with several new neighborhood developments in the last few years including The Ridge with sweeping views of Lake Michigan, but also just a short walk to the Downtown Village with it’s shopping, dining and entertainment options. To the more tranquil setting of Sunset Ridge, recently developed across from Bay Harbor with private, estate homesites that offer serenity with fabulous sunset views over Little Traverse Bay. Last year, Carriage Place at Bay Harbor was built as a 24-unit storage garage neighborhood for owners to have that little extra space to store their recreational vehicles or sundries.

Another exciting change is that after 25 years as one of the anchor waterfront restaurants, Knot Just A Bar closed their doors in 2023, making way for a new restaurant group to renovate the space into something brand new, including adding an extensive outdoor space with a cabana bar, perfect for summer and fall gatherings on the water. Brandy’s Harbortown Kitchen Collective and Cabana Bar will officially open their doors in May 2024 with excitement and enthusiasm. Just another example of great happenings taking place in Bay Harbor.

There is no slowing down for this beautiful community, as the building continues to grow and the availability of homesites become less with buyers who have discovered the beauty here and look to build their dream home in this incredible resort community. As the landscape continually changes and new families are welcomed in, people are starting to know more and more about this little corner of the world and how absolutely stunning it is to be a part of.

Come Celebrate with Bay Harbor on Saturday, July 6th with family fun, live music, food trucks, “Light Up the Docks” at the Marina and a Lighted Drone Show at dusk!

Spotlight Artist

Alexander Kippe

Alexander Kippe’s artistic expression finds its roots in the vibrant underwater realms of South Florida, where he captured the ethereal beauty of a basket star on a nocturnal scuba dive—one of his earliest photographs. His connection to nature deepened in the tranquil environs of northern Michigan, where he is a Native American Michigan Chippewa Tribe member who spent significant periods at his family’s multi-generational cabin. This profound bond with the landscape is evident in his dynamic pursuits, which range from snowmobiling to jet skiing. Each activity further enriches his creative palette.

The inception of Torch Lake Gallery along the picturesque shores of Torch Lake marks a pivotal moment in Alexander’s career. Here, the gallery’s name itself—”Torch”—symbolizes “Light” mirroring the luminous essence of his collective artworks. Each piece within the gallery is envisioned as a singular droplet contributing to the vast ocean of his creative endeavors. Located in Bay Harbor, Michigan, Torch Lake Gallery is Alexander’s first brick-and-mortar venture, a space where the fusion of natural beauty and artistic innovation coalesces. Through his media production company, A Plus Pic, Alexander delves into a diverse array of formats—fine art stills and motion pictures in 2-D and 360-degree.

A distinct aspect of his work is the creation of Large Format Metal Sublimation Fine Art Prints. This innovative technique involves a high-intensity process where ink is transformed directly from solid to gas under extreme heat and pressure, infusing it into aluminum panels to produce vibrant, enduring images. TThese large-scale pieces, measuring up to 40 x 60, can be displayed singly or assembled into multi-panel installations, showcasing Alexander’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of traditional photographic media.

HANDCRAFTED IN MICHIGAN Fall in love With Exceptional Comfort On Natural Fibers HARBOR SPRINGS | ROCHESTER | TRAVERSE CITY | NAPLES

Harbor Springs Mattress Company: Luxury, Handcrafted, All-Natural

Michigan-basedHarborSpringsMattressCompanyCelebrates20thAnniversaryin2024

One of Harbor Springs’ many claims to fame is that it is the hometown of Harbor Springs Mattress Company, one of the country’s few handcrafted and all-natural mattress creators. Its Harbor Springs showroom also includes its workshop, where mattresses are made to order. As company president Dar Charlebois comments, “Your mattress will not come from a warehouse. It will be hand-made fresh just for you and you alone.”

The evolution of Harbor Springs Mattress has included expansions to showrooms in Traverse City and Rochester, and, on the occasion of the company’s 20th anniversary, a showroom in Naples, FL., where many Michiganders reside during the winter months.

Harbor Springs Mattress Company creates handcrafted mattresses with the centuries-old technique of hand-tufting. The two-sided luxury mattresses are created with 100% natural fibers and are meant to last a lifetime. There are five mattress selections, including the best-selling Bed of Roses and Trillium mattresses, both made with hand-tufted layers of pure cotton, natural latex and wool made in Michigan.

According to Charlebois, “Customers often comment on the beauty of our mattress ticking, notably the vintage-inspired quilted texture of our signature Bed of Roses and the organic cotton on our Trillium mattress with its hand-euro-stitched micro-mattress topper.” Customers are also impressed with the materials that go into the beds, from the fresh-spun oolen batting washed in natural soap to the unbleached cotton that retains tiny specks of the cotton’s boll.“Because of our organic and natural fibers, there is no harmful off-gassing or chemicals in our mattresses,” said Charlebois.

The wool is spun fresh from a 100-year-old family-run woolen mill in Michigan. Natural latex is made from the milky white sap of the rubber tree, hevea brasiliensis, which is processed to achieve a supportive, stable form. Layers of American-made, unbleached cotton add supple support. The “soul” of the mattress is its innerspring, which provides a level of resiliency and support that cannot be found in beds made only with foam or foam latex.

What further sets Harbor Springs Mattress Company apart is that its mattresses are made by inner and outer hand-tufting the natural fibers to the innersprings. This artisan method of bedmaking is an Old-World tradition of creating luxurious comfort and longevity. Box springs, which are becoming less common, are another signature of a Harbor Springs Mattress bed, which builds the strongest box springs in the industry with 9-gauge steel springs. “Our box springs are like good shocks on a luxury car. We spare no expense toward making amattress last 25 years,” said Charlebois.

Harbor Springs Mattress Company Background

Harbor Springs Mattress Company was founded in 2004 by Detroit native Rory Karpathian after decades of senior positions at major U.S. mattress manufacturers, a career that involved extensive travel throughout the country for hands-on supervision of factory operations. “I loved it,” he said. “I loved being on the floor with workers, trouble-shooting production and machines and making improvements.” “Then everything changed,” Karpathian said, sharing that the mattress industry began to “churn out chemical-laden, poorly made foam-based mattresses. Springs were removed from box springs and mattresses became one-sided.” With a leap of faith and conviction, Karpathian launched Beds by Design in Harbor Springs,Michigan, the original name of Harbor Springs Mattress Company. His intention was to bring back the lost art of hand-tufting to guarantee comfort and longevity, and to use natural fibers to ensure health, strength and sustainability. In 2015, a milestone event transformed the company and expanded its trajectory: Karpathian’s partnership with Dar Charlebois. According to Charlebois, “I fell in love with both the man and his company.”

As business blossomed, Charlebois and the team noticed an increase in customers who bought mattresses for their second homes in Florida. “Once people fall in love with our mattresses, they want nothing else, so we have seen a great increase in orders for second homes in Florida, especially the Gulf Coast,” Charlebois said. In 2022, the company had an unprecedented number of mattresses bound for Florida. The team personally delivered mattresses throughout the state, with the majority going to Gulf Coast cities. The time was ripe to expand to the Sunshine State.

The Healing Power of Horses

Our somatics - the language of our bodies non-verbal communication speaks to us in ways that we tend to ignore. Unfortunately, the more we ignore our body, the more attention it needs. Our culture has a tendency to want to fix everything quickly including how we feel, our habits, and even the way we look. Stress, bad habits, emotional literacy or lack thereof, addictions, dysfunctional relationships, are just the tip of the iceberg. How our bodies carry around all these invisible chains that eventually show up as health problems is part of the resilience of humankind. But it’s not necessary to carry those burdens anymore.

Horses happen to be experts at non-verbal communication and somatic cues.Centuries of evolving their instincts for survival have created minute signals and energetic nuances within them that are mind blowing to us humans. In equine assisted programs, people have the opportunity to tune into their own somatic awareness while partnering with a horse. Are you able to find your heart rate by closing your eyes and “listening” within your body? Where do you hear it? How often are you aware of how your body feels physically throughout the day? Sadly, most of us are not aware of anything unless it becomes very painful. Pain seems to be the language we stop to listen to. If we’re not in pain, everything must be fine, right? The damage builds up over time. Horses have this uncanny ability to show up for us even in our darkest hour. They teach us how to become aware of ourselves again. They ground our energy so that it becomes neutral. Horses feel energy before we even know what is happening.Research shows that horses have the ability to sense our heartbeat and lower it from over four feet away. They also activate our parasympathetic nervous systems. According to the Library of Medicine, this system is responsible for our bodies ability to rest and recharge, allowing our bodies to properly digest food and conserve our energy. When compared to the relationship between a parent and their child, parents will hold their child, calm them, lower their heart rate and help them feel better because of their energetic connection. Horses do the same. They sense when something is off, even when the human is not aware of what it is. They feel the somatics of that person and mirror those somatics. For them it is completely natural. They are also able to sense fear and joy through their sense of smell. Horses must be able to read energy and react a certain way, then go back to balance for optimal health and harmony

Horse’s mere size also engages in us a primal response. We tend to get real honest about ourselves when we are left to our own devices in a field with a 1,000 pound animal that could physically harm us. Experiencing that level of being in the here and now with all of our being requires focus within our mind, body, and spirit. In a world of constant distraction, more and more people are struggling with the ability to stay in the moment, self regulate, connect with their own body, and fully thrive. Spending time with a horse in a safe environment is one way to do that. Could it be that horses may have the answers to many of our 21st century emotional woes? There still may be something very powerful about that old quote, “There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man.”Winston Churchill.

The mission ofWildfire Dreams is to positively change lives by creating connections in a sacred place of healing that promotes wellness, balance, and harmony.

DESIGN TRENDS WE LOVE

O’Brien Harris is a manufacturer of handmade bespoke cabinetry for every room in the house, with a special focus on kitchens, butler’s pantries, primary baths, dressing rooms, and paneled libraries. We are excited to highlight trends for 2024 which include a continued focus on function, practicality, and versatility. From space-saving solutions like pocket doors to customized storage, these trends cater to the evolving needs and preferences of homeowners seeking to create functional and enduring living spaces.

POCKET DOORS ARE HERE TO STAY

Pocket doors are here to stay. They remain a popular choice in the cabinetry we design, providing spacesaving functionality and a sleek appearance. Pocket doors offer concealed storage. We often design bars for our clients which can be open during entertaining and closed to keep items out of sight. Pocket doors in the kitchen are also highly favored. They usually remain open during cooking or while using the space, making items easily accessible, but can be tucked back into a recess and out of the way when needed.

A PLACE FOR EVERYTHING

We are proud to have mastered custom storage solutions, providing handmade cabinetry tailored to each of our client’s unique needs. Our specialized storage options ensure everything has its place. Customized storage for silverware is a specialty of ours, with felt-lined drawers designed to exact specifications of cutlery.

OPEN SHELVING

Open Shelving is another storage trend that continues to be popular. We recommend open shelving for frequently used items, which prevents dust build-up.

Pairing our knowledge of trends and our commitment to craftsmanship and collaboration, O’Brien Harris continues to provide functional and enduring living spaces for homeowners seeking bespoke cabinetry solutions.

North Central Michigan College A Tradition of Academic Excellence

Elevating Education and Community: North Central Michigan College’s Transformative Journey

In the heart of Northern Michigan, North Central Michigan College has emerged not just as a cornerstone of higher education but as a catalyst for regional development and community vitality. Over the last five years, North Central has undertaken a series of strategic enhancements that have redefined its campus and broadened its impact, making it a pivotal element of life in Petoskey. This story of transformation is especially significant for residents and potential real estate investors, illustrating the thriving educational environment and community engagement NCMC fosters.

A Campus Reimagined

The completion of the Building Tomorrow Together project in 2021 marked a new era for NCMC. This initiative transformed the main classroom building into a state-of-the-art learning environment. The Borra Learning Center (BLC), at the heart of this transformation, now features a 3,000-square-foot Student Commons that buzzes with student activities. The BLC also provides access to comprehensive support services, from career counseling to academic advising, all underpinned by the latest educational technologies and expanded scholarship opportunities. These enhancements not only serve the student body but also elevate the college’s role as a community hub.

Targeted Programs for Rapid Career Entry

Championing Athletics and Community Spirit

The introduction of the North Central Timberwolf mascot and the launch of six varsity athletic teams in 2022 have brought a new spirit of camaraderie and pride to the college. With the establishment of Petoskey Plastics Arena, NCMC has created a vibrant center for community and student gatherings, enhancing local engagement and enriching the student experience.

Recognizing the needs of the local healthcare industry, NCMC launched the Fast Track Healthcare program, which quickly reached full enrollment. This initiative is part of a broader suite of Fast Track programs across various fields, designed to equip students with essential skills in a condensed timeframe. These programs are supported by scholarships ensuring that students can complete their education without financial burden - an attractive proposition for families considering relocation to Petoskey.

Expanding Academic Horizons

NCMC has continually expanded its academic offerings to include cutting-edge programs like Mechatronics, Digital Art & Design, and Medical & Health Sciences. These programs reflect the college’s commitment to aligning with industry trends and job market needs. Furthermore, a partnership with Davenport University now offers a streamlined path for nursing students to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, enhancing their credentials and career prospects locally.

Innovative Early College and Career Readiness Initiatives

North Central’s Early College program, which celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2024, has successfully partnered with several local school districts to provide high school students with a head start on college education. Additionally, statewide articulation agreements allow students to convert their high school career and technical education achievements into college credits, saving time and tuition costs.

Building a Community-Centered Child Care System

In 2022, NCMC initiated a comprehensive child care program supported by federal and community grants. By Fall 2024, the college plans to launch the NCMC Child Care Program, aiming to provide affordable, high-quality child care options for student parents and local families — a crucial factor for young families considering investing in local real estate.

Looking Ahead: Expanding Infrastructure and Opportunities

With a recent $10 million state appropriation, NCMC is set to enhance its Career and Technical Education facilities significantly. This development will not only improve educational infrastructure but also contribute to the local economy and workforce readiness, making Petoskey an even more attractive location for families and businesses.

A Beacon of Community and Educational Excellence

As NCMC continues to advance, it remains a key player in driving regional growth and community well-being. The college’s dynamic environment, commitment to accessible education, and integral community role underscore its importance to Petoskey’s future. For families and investors, North Central Michigan College represents a vital asset, contributing to the region’s appeal as a place to live, learn, work, and thrive.

Kiwidinok Petting Farm, Boyne City

Kiwidinok Farm is touched by the breath of winds from the Great Lakes every season - spring thunder storms, balmy warm summer breezes and harsh, cold snow laden winds born from winter. The word Kiwidinok means “of the wind” in Chippewa.

The main attraction of the farm is the opportunity to pet and feed the animals. Visitors can interact with friendly animals like Kiwidinok Yak, Kiwidinok Katahdin sheep, alpacas, lionhead rabbits, peacocks, miniature ponies, and other animals. This hands-on experience allows visitors to get up close and personal with the animals while learning about their behaviors and characteristics.

The farm also hosts birthday parties, which is a truly unique experience for the guests. A birthday party at Kiwidinok Petting Farm is not just an event; it’s a journey filled with laughter, learning, and the joy of connecting with nature, which is a very memorable birthday for all.

In a world dominated by screens and technology, this place offers a refreshing escape. It’s a place where families can connect with each other and with nature, where the only screens you’ll find are the ones on your smartphone as you capture the priceless moments of laughter and wonder.

Colonial Fort Michilimackinac, Mackinaw City

Colonial Fort Michilimackinac is located on the shore of the Straits of Mackinac, visitors can enjoy stunning views of the Mackinac Bridge, the straits, and the Upper Peninsula. Treasures from the past come to life at this 18th-century fort and fur trading village, reconstructed based on historic maps and more than 60 years of archaeological excavations. As you walk through Colonial Michilimackinac, you are stepping back in time to 1781, when local and global forces uprooted the entire community as soldiers and civilians relocated to Mackinac Island. After six decades as a thriving diplomatic and economic hub, Michilimackinac came to an end in 1781.

Historical interpreters representing voyageurs, British soldiers, and French-Canadian merchant families are stationed throughout the fort to answer your questions and perform demonstrations. The past and present blur into a fascinating and unmatched experience at Colonial Michilimackinac. Watch smoke billow from cannons, mortars and muskets and see residents prepare food and tend the gardens.

Demonstrations and tours by costumed interpreters take place throughout the day. Cooking, crafts and trades are conducted at key locations and vary by season. Exciting programs for the 2024 season include Michilimackinac 1781: The End, Building Michilimackinac: Architecture of the Frontier, The Pleasures of the Table: Dining Culture at the Merchant’s House, a look at the enslaved community at Michilimackinac, Some Tea and Loaf Sugar: Tea at the British Trader’s House, Bales, Barrels, and Boxes: Supplying the Great Lakes Fur Trade programs, and more!

Also during the summer season, from early June until mid-August, you can witness archaeologists continuing the excavation of Michilimackinac. Taking place each summer since 1959, the dig is one of the longest ongoing excavations of its kind in the nation
