Upcoming Fall & Winter Northern Michigan Events
Local Treasure: Special PlacesTo Explore
Spotlight Trisha WittyWelcome to the Fall/Winter edition of Reside. We had a spectacular summer season here in Northern Michigan and if you’re a boater, you know what I mean. We are looking forward to the transformation into fall and winter which is also a very special time of year.
Many are asking how the real estate market is this year after the frenzy that started in 2020. Coming off two years of fast sales, multiple offers and bidding wars, things seem to have cooled off in some areas of our markets, while others still remain red hot. Two factors that seem to have the biggest impact on our market currently are higher interest rates on mortgages and limited inventories of homes for sale. This has caused a more balanced market between buyers and sellers. The hardest impacted market seems to be primary non-lakefront homes priced between $500,000 and $1million. These higher interest rates have reduced purchasing power for those that are locked in at a much lower rate on their current home that are looking to relocate.
Harbor Sotheby’s International Realty is excited to be a part of two new developments; Sunset Ridge at Bay Harbor and the Carriage Place garages inside Bay Harbor. Sunset Ridge is a new neighborhood launched in September 2023. It consists of 14 estate sized homesites on 35 acres. The sites offer expansive views of Little Traverse Bay offering privacy and green space along with a gated entry. The neighborhood is located off Townsend Road and US 31 near the Bay Harbor Yacht club entrance. Carriage Place was launched earlier this year and consists of 24 garages located near the Preserve at Bay Harbor. These are available to both residents and non-residents of Bay Harbor.
Overall life is great here in Northern Michigan. We embrace the new seasons upon us and look forward to a new ski-season and winter fun. If you’re considering purchasing a home or selling in the future, please reach out to one of us, we love to have that conversation and show you how Harbor Sotheby’s International Realty can market your home to a worldwide audience.
Warmest Regards,
Brad Rellinger Managing BrokerWe

Witty began her career at a young age, selling her first oil at age fifteen, and opening her own exclusive gallery at age nineteen, in 1992. Trisha balanced painting, running a business and attending the University of Michigan until graduating with three liberal arts degrees in 1995. After college, Trisha began travelling extensively abroad, and spent three years in Miami Beach, working out of her SoBe studio in the winter, while running another gallery in Naples, Florida. The majority of Witty’s work concentrated on her travels to the Caribbean and Southern Florida landscapes.
After her years spent in Florida, Witty decided to move on to capturing and challenging herself to new landscapes, which led her to the California coastline for painting during the winters. Trisha has painted the mountains, vineyards, deserts, and beaches, which has made California such a desirable place for a growing artist. Through her travels and experiences, Witty has not only been absorbing the beauty and color of her subject matter, but the culture, arts, and essence of each community she resides in and travels to. In 2008, Trisha had the opportunity to go to the Middle East, and paint in Dubai, Jordan, and Damascus, Syria. She found most of her inspiration to be from the old historic areas of Mt. Nebo at the Dead Sea and in the Old City of Damascus. The series of 14 paintings were very different from her traditional landscapes. Three of the paintings now hang in a beautiful Jordanian home in Amman. Sadly, many of the subjects she painted in Syria have now been destroyed. She is thankful that she got to experience such a place and has captured history on canvas.
Most recently, Trisha has been working with the developer of Bay Harbor in Michigan, Mr. David Johnson. She was the first artist given access to paint his ongoing development, Oil Nut Bay, in the British Virgin Islands. Trisha now has two large installed paintings hanging in Oil Nut Bay, that captures the beauty of the area. She plans on continuing her painting of the 300-acre gem while permanently recording its beauty and development on the island.
Witty’s career has taken her to all parts of the globe, with hundreds of paintings hung across the nation. Her enthusiasts and collectors have consistently grown, while her originals remain in high demand, increasing in value every year. With her continued love for travel, growth and good energy, Witty will turn each canvas into a one of a kind masterpiece. We invite you to share in the experience!
Visit her new gallery location in downtown Harbor Springs. She is open seasonally June through mid-October, and available for appointments. 310-980-4055. For more information on the fabulous art of Trisha Witty, visit her website at wittyart.com {bio and artwork from wittyart.com}

Michigan’s Tunnel of Trees is located along a 20-mile stretch of M-119, a state highway north of Harbor Springs that hugs the scenic coast of Lake Michigan. You’ll find quaint shops and art studios tucked in the trees along the highway, as well as spectacular Lake Michigan vistas. Be sure to visit along the way, the sweet little village of Good Hart which includes the Good Hart General Store, Good Hart Glassworks and A Studio Shop which offers unique specialties. The winding roads will lead you to a wonderful destination, Cross Village which offers the famed Legs Inn, known for its home-made Polish cuisine, as well as a general store and museum.
Cross Village is one of the earliest settlements in the Lower Peninsula and is located at the northern point of the Tunnel of Trees is an unincorporated community with a rich, varied history that began in the 1600s. The town has been known by several names throughout its history, beginning with Waganakisi, which is the Ottawa word for crooked tree. The name originated from a large fir tree located on the shore of Lake Michigan which was so large it was used as a landmark by those passing in canoes. It wasn’t until 1830, when a white cross was erected in the village, that the town got its current name. The Native Americans began to refer to the settlement as Anamiewatigoing, which means at the tree of prayer, and by 1875, the area was officially known as Cross Village.
Built in 1918 by Albert Loeb, the acting President of Sears, Roebuck, and Co. as a model dairy farm, Loeb Farms was modeled after the stone barns and castles found in Normandy, France. At its peak the farm was the largest employer in Charlevoix County, with over 90 people on its payroll. It had more than 200 head of prize-winning Holstein-Friesian and 13 pair of Belgian draft horses.
Arthur and Edwina Reibel purchased the property in 1969. They tried out many businesses, but eventually settled on a concert venue under the name Castle Farms Summer Music Theater. The property hosted many concerts through the 1970s to early 1990s, including headliners like Tina Turner, Aerosmith and The Doobie Brothers, just to name a few.
Linda Mueller purchased Castle Farms in 2001 and began an extensive restoration project. The roofs were replaced, wings were added back according to original blueprints, and extensive gardens were created. The Castle began hosting weddings in 2002. Family activities and events followed, creating a destination for the whole family.
Today Castle Farms is a unique destination and visitors can enjoy Michigan’s largest outdoor model railroad with over 2,500 feet of track (Memorial Day through mid-October, weather permitting), World War I Museum full of photos, documents and toys from the Great War era, private collections including royal, wedding, and other memorabilia and extensive gardens and paths with countless photo opportunities. You can also go to the 1918 Wine Cellars tasting room and public events throughout the year. Visit castlefarms.com for more information.
In 1936, the State of Michigan acquired 2,200 acres surrounding and including the Upper and Lower Tahquamenon Falls from the U.S. Forest Service. After acquiring other lands through gifts, tax delinquency and exchanges, the Michigan State Parks Commission officially dedicated 17,000 acres in January 1947 and named it Tahquamenon Falls State Park. It is now one of the most-visited and photographed state parks in Michigan.
Not only is the Upper Tahquamenon Falls Michigan’s largest waterfall, but it is also one of the largest waterfalls in the United States east of the Mississippi River. The Upper Falls are nearly 200 feet across and 50 feet high. Each second you spend at the viewing platform, up to 50,000 gallons of water flow down the falls right before your eyes!
Four miles downstream from the Upper Tahquamenon Falls is the Lower Tahquamenon Falls. It is a series of five small waterfalls cascading around an island. You can reach the falls on a trail or with your vehicle, both from the Upper Tahquamenon Falls.
This is truly one of the most beautiful places in the Upper Peninsula, and seeing this in the fall season is absolutely spectacular! For more information on the park, visit any one of the websites below:
