English Language Academy Celebrates Silver Anniversary
T
he English Language Academy, part of Harcum’s Center for International Programs (CIP) designed to foster the cultural adjustment and academic success of international students, has just celebrated 25 years of service to Harcum and the community. One of three components of the CIP,The English Language Academy (ELA) offers non-credit English as a Second Language courses to students from all countries. International Student
Advising and the Au Pair Program complete the center’s services which include immigration advising, activities, homestays and short-term host family arrangements.Au pairs may enroll in ELA courses while auditing other college courses. Students in the CIP come from all ends of the globe.This semester, the program is hosting students from Albania,Argentina, Austria, Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, Germany, Holland, Iran, Italy, Japan, Korea, Liberia, Mexico, Puerto Rico (US), Poland, Saudi Arabia, Sweden,Turkey and Vietnam!
“When I think about the hundreds—maybe thousands—of students who have passed through the English Language Academy, I am amazed by how big, yet how small the world is.” Debra Young-Yassine, Program Director for the Center for International Studies Debra Young-Yassine, Program Director for the Center for International Studies, creates a welcoming environment and helps ELA students integrate into the Harcum community. “I have truly enjoyed working at the English Language Academy for almost 18 years,” says Young-Yassine.“I’ve had the opportunity to interact with students from around the world, to learn about their cultures, their families, and for some, the obstacles that they overcame to study in the U.S.When I think about the hundreds—maybe thousands—of students who have passed through the English Language Academy, I am amazed by how big, yet how small the world is.” “Students carry the experiences and friendships that were developed here,” Young-Yassine continues,“we’ve had students from countries at war with each other become best friends by meeting at Harcum.”

Harcum Highlights 4TH ANNUAL DENTAL EXPO BREAKS ATTENDANCE RECORDS
A
s part of its ongoing commitment to excellence in the dental profession and lifelong learning, Harcum College’s Office of Professional Studies and Off-Campus Programs hosted its 4th Annual Dental Expo on Saturday, March 6. Attendance more than doubled from 2009’s event. A total of 210 dental professionals, including many Harcum alumni, learned about the latest developments in their field while earning 6 hours of continuing education credits. Six courses were offered throughout the day, covering topics ranging from clinical dentistry, teen health issues, working with children on the Autism Spectrum, and pharmacology related to dental patients. Dentists also attended the Dental Expo, including Samuel P. Cimino, DDS of Concordville Dental. Dr. Cimino is a member of Harcum’s Board of Trustees and the Dental Program’s Advisory Board. He complimented Harcum, which he says “offered high quality programs and excellent speakers at a reasonable cost. Professional development is essential in our field and Harcum provides an important service through its continuing education programs.”

Dossie Cavallucci, Program Director for Harcum’s Expanded Functions Dental Assisting (EFDA) Program, was delighted to see so many alumni returning to campus and reconnecting with classmates and teachers they hadn’t seen in years. “It was a great day,” Cavalucci said. “Exhibitors shared information and samples of their products, and we offered attendees many venues for learning and networking.We are all looking forward to next year’s event!” Save the Date for 2011 Dental Expo: Saturday, March 5

Brenda Mason ’06 with assistant professor Gail Sklar at the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society Induction on December 1, 2009. Brenda was the keynote speaker with a message that urged students to see success as a choice, and to consistently persevere despite a lack of resources. Brenda said, “Never back away from a challenging opportunity because you lack knowledge. You can always acquire knowledge.” After graduating from Harcum, Brenda completed her BA at Bryn Mawr College and is now a candidate in their Graduate School of Social Work.

A Day of Golf for a Good Cause! On Monday, June 28, friends of Harcum College will gather at Llanerch Country Club in Havertown, Pennsylvania, for the 10th Annual Kevin D. Marlo Golf Classic. Kevin Marlo, son of Harcum Trustee Dennis Marlo and brother of Harcum alumna Christine Marlo ’00, was a victim of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center. This event honors Kevin’s memory by raising scholarships for deserving Harcum students. Over the years, this Golf Classic has raised over $300,000 in scholarships.

Alumni Spotlight: Sharon Stellabott-Moore, Class of 1980 HOW THIS ALUMNA USED HER HARCUM DEGREE TO LAUNCH A NATIONALLY-RECOGNIZED EVENT PLANNING BUSINESS hen Sharon Moore earned her degree in 1980, she had plans to build a successful business career—using the knowledge she’d gained at Harcum.Today, after finding her niche in full-service event planning, Sharon now owns and manages one of the top special events planning and production companies in the Philadelphia area, and the country. Sharon attended Harcum as a Retail Fashion/Marketing student while participating in extra-curricular activities like the dance club, which offered ballet, jazz and tap dancing classes. Upon graduation, she spent a few years traveling and living in Europe, attending classes at Bryn Mawr College, and taking her first job as a manager at a retail store. Several years later, Sharon’s formative introduction to event planning started when she took a job as a head lighting designer for special events at Frost Lighting, the first special event lighting company in Philadelphia and the Delaware Valley. While working with clients to design lighting concepts, Sharon soon learned of the many layers of special events; “additional services were always required… coordination and management of the events, décor, power with distribution, tenting, flooring, staging, audio,A/V, rentals, floral table-top designs... it is endless,” she explains.Through considering the needs of her clients, Sharon began constructing events with all facets in mind:“I started designing, planning and producing the entire event from ‘soup to nuts,’ as they say.” In 1999, Sharon launched Moore Events Inc., a full-serv-

he Harcum College Student Government Association (SGA) is thriving. Astride Kahley, SGA President reports, “the group strives to be the voice of the student body to implement ideas and suggestions.The SGA also encourages the Harcum community to participate in service projects.” Last semester the SGA orchestrated a toy drive that benefited a local women and children’s shelter. This semester they are collecting goods to send to people devastated by the earthquake in Haiti. The SGA Toy Drive helped to purchase computers and toys for children and women staying at the Woodstock Family Center in Philadelphia.

As the President/CEO of Moore Events, Inc., Sharon has worked with every President of the United States since 1985. She planned and produced forty-eight of the Republican National Convention events held in Philadelphia in 2000. Among other Philadelphia-based clients and Fortune 500 companies, Moore Events worked with the Philadelphia Phillies as the official planner, designer and production company of the NLCS, Major League Baseball gala and player events after their World Series win in 2008, repeating their role again in the 2009 NLCS and the World Series play-offs. Moore Events also planned and produced the Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl XXXIX post-game event in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. Recently, Sharon teamed up with her alma mater to plan and produce Harcum’s English Language Academy 25th Anniversary celebration, a spectacular event held in November of 2009. Students, faculty, staff and friends of the College came together to celebrate the essential roles of education and diversity in student’s lives and in the Harcum experience. When asked how her degree prepared her for success, she noted the value of Harcum’s unique career-oriented faculty with specific field experience;” Looking back, Sharon says “I have always loved the tradition and educational history of Harcum!”

arcum closed the season with a 26-2 record, and retained their #3 national position in the NJCAA rankings after holding the #1 spot in February.As of this writing Harcum is preparing for the NJCAA District 3 Tournament to begin Saturday, March 6 at Westchester Community College in Valhalla, New York. The winner of the District 3 tournament will be one of sixteen teams in the nation to advance to the NJCAA National Tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas, on March 15-20.
he Lady Bears recently advanced to 29-1 this season, setting a new school record for victories in a season and capturing the school’s 2nd Region 19 tournament title— its first since 2006. Head Coach Sheila DiNardo was named the Region 19 Division II coach of the year. The 10th-ranked Lady Bears will next play 8th-ranked and undefeated Patrick Henry for the right to be one of 12 teams from across the nation to advance to the NJCAA National Tournament in Peoria, Illinois.

Soccer tarting this Fall, women’s soccer will compete at the varsity level in NJCAA, Division I.The Bears have not fielded an intercollegiate women’s soccer program in nearly a decade. Coach Jean Senat has vast experience playing soccer at the varsity level, leading college and club soccer teams and recruiting and coaching players in Europe,Africa,Asia, the Caribbean and in the United States. Recently, Jean was the assistant soccer coach and assistant to the athletic director at his alma mater Brescia University in Owensboro, KY.
