Back home, Robert found that Harcum had the PTA program he wanted. Loving sports (particularly soccer, rugby and basketball), he plans to go into sports rehabilitation as a career. “Harcum’s PTA program has prepared me well and it’s been an eye-opening experience working at the clinical sites. “I chose to attend Harcum because it was a school close to home, and my personal hygienist spoke very highly of Harcum’s dental programs,” says Alicia. “In talking to my dentist, it was also the college that he highly recommended! I like how friendly and helpful all of the staff and administrators are. I also like all of the activities that are offered to help give me a wellrounded education.”

Tasha came to Harcum because of the College’s academic reputation and small class sizes. Her career goals: become a social worker specializing in veterans affairs, and start an nonprofit organization to help young mothers and teenagers who are in trouble with the law. “One thing that I love about Harcum is the atmosphere,” says Tasha. “When you come to Harcum it feels like home – and everyone is like family.”

It was a natural decision for PFC Sara-Jo Fegley to serve her country, with grandparents on both sides of her family who had served in the military and a personal desire to make her mark. But she also wanted to sharpen her mind. In search of a career, right after high school the Allentown native joined National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC), also known as Americorps, and was assigned to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for helping residents in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike and later with the NCCC as a certified tax preparer for the elderly in Oklahoma.

She found she liked making a contribution on both a local and national level, and joined the Army National Guard in 2009. Trained in interrogation and ready for deployment in 2012, she learned that her deployment date was moved back, and decided to take action on her goal of earning an associate degree in criminal justice. Harcum had the program she wanted – an A.S. degree in law and justice with a flexible schedule. As a Servicemembers Opportunity College (SOC), Harcum helps military members by accepting credit for military training and experience, allowing reduced academic residency requirements and helping with transferring credits. Sara-Jo will graduate in 2012.

Dental Assisting/ Expanded Functions Dental Assisting (EFDA)

Alicia plans to graduate from Harcum with an associate’s degree in Dental Assisting with EFDA certification. She hopes to work as an EFDA in a dental office after graduation. EFDA’s perform many restorative and preventive procedures in dental offices, and must be state certified to practice.

Founded in 1915, the “College of Possibilities” strives to help every student discover and nurture those skills that open up life’s possibilities, and provide an array of career choices. Located in Bryn Mawr on Philadelphia’s historic and beautiful Main Line, Harcum offers a rich and varied residential college experience for students from the Philadelphia region and many foreign nations. With over 20 associate degree and certificate programs, and majors in business, human services and the health professions, Harcum combines the same range of programs offered by many Pennsylvania four-year institutions, but at an associate-degree college price. Harcum is designed for motivated men and women who seek new possibilities and are attracted to Harcum’s unique mix of practical career education, hands-on internships and clinical experiences, and personal attention and support from faculty, In this way, Harcum still follows the path blazed by Harcum’s founder Edith Hatcher, who created the school to help students expand upon their individual skills and talents while providing a strong academic program. In 1956, Pennsylvania granted Harcum permission to be the first college in the Commonwealth’s history to confer the Associate of Arts and the Associate of Science degrees. The College officially became co-educational in 2003. Harcum’s majors are offered through four fully-accredited academic centers: Allied Health, Business and Professional Studies, Social Sciences and Continuing Studies.

ROBERT SCHMILEWSKE Physical Therapist Assistant

Hatfield, PA native Robert Schmilewske served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves for six years with two tours of duty in Iraq. The North Penn High School graduate was discharged and living in Florida, taking classes in physical therapy assisting when he had to return to Pennsylvania unexpectedly. I plan to transfer to one of Harcum’s partner colleges and go on to become a certified physical therapist.”

Human Services
