The College of Possibilities

Thank you for considering

Harcum College You’ve discovered a special place that will focus on your personal growth and career success along with your academic achievement.

Harcum prides itself on being called “the College of Possibilities.” Our faculty is dedicated to helping you discover your possibilities by providing you with a quality education in just two years that can start you on a career or further your education. Great teaching is just the beginning at Harcum College. Small class size and individual attention are at the heart of the Harcum experience. Since its founding in 1915, this focus on the individual and the combination of practical, experiential education and general studies have made Harcum a leader among the nation’s 2-year colleges. Harcum welcomes men and women of varied ages, nations, cultures and social backgrounds. Our student body is diverse and accomplished. Harcum is known for its outstanding programs in allied health. It is also known for quality career programs in business, interior design, fashion merchandising, early childhood education, and law and justice. Our programs are unique in that all students partake in the fine arts. Harcum is also a leader in distance education, with the first online program in neurodiagnostics in the nation, and Pennsylvania’s only online program in medical laboratory technology. The College constantly reviews programs to ensure they meet student needs. Harcum believes in a holistic approach to education and has created a living/learning environment at our Bryn Mawr, PA campus that offers many opportunities for individual participation and development. Many of our students transfer to four-year colleges and universities upon graduation. Of Harcum graduates who enter the job market, most find employment soon after graduation. Two years at Harcum provide the equivalent residential experience of a four-year college, but with smaller classes at a fraction of the cost. Our men’s basketball team, the Bears, was ranked #1 in NJCAA Division I, and led the nation in scoring in 2009-10. Men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and cross country, women’s basketball, women’s volleyball, and soccer offer other opportunities for athletic pursuits. Student government and clubs offer many avenues for leadership development and the chance to pursue special interests. Regardless of your goals, you will find Harcum College an innovative and practical educational experience, a rewarding personal experience, and a place to build a satisfying career. I urge you to take a closer look at Harcum. We are dedicated to your success. I look forward to meeting you soon. Jon Jay DeTemple, Ph.D. President

Why Is An Independent Two-Year Residential College Your Best Choice? Harcum College offers a unique approach that’s right for both career and educational goals. Consider some of the changes that have happened at Harcum in the past few years:

• Although men have been a part of the student body since the 1970’s, in 2003 Harcum officially declared itself a co-educational college. It is a leader among a small group of independent two-year colleges in the nation, a key part of the system that made U.S. higher education the envy of the world in the 19th and 20th centuries. • The College has grown—not just in numbers but in locations. Harcum offers a Leadership program throughout the Philadelphia region and is now offering its Early Childhood and Human Services programs at selected sites.

• Harcum plays a major role in filling the critical shortages of health care workers in nursing, physical therapist assisting, medical laboratory technologist, occupational therapy assisting, neurodiagnostic technologist, histotechnician, dental hygienist, expanded functions dental assistant, veterinary technologist, and radiologic technologist. • Many Harcum programs incorporate clinical or practicum experiences. This gives students a chance for work experience and networking in a chosen field – the best preparation possible for the working world.

Faculty Harcum’s faculty “walks the talk” when it comes to personalized attention. With a student/teacher ratio around 9 to 1, our faculty get to know each and every student— whether enrolled in their class or in another major.

The College’s Academic Enrichment and Achievement Center (AEA) provides academic tutoring support and accommodation services. The AEA atmosphere allows students to monitor their academic progress and acknowledge when they need academic support. The center’s professional and peer tutors provide one-on-one and small group tutoring, showing students how to improve their study and test-taking skills, reading techniques, and time management.

That’s the big difference between Harcum and other two-year schools; Harcum takes a personal interest in student success. Harcum Vet Tech students get practical experience at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, are taught by nationally recognized experts in the field, and participate in all aspects of the most advanced and sophisticated techniques currently available in veterinary medicine.

Financial Aid & Student Services The opportunity to succeed in college should not be sidetracked by the ability to pay for college. That’s why Harcum provides financial aid for over 85 percent of its student body. Grants, loans, and scholarships help pay for a portion of your total college costs. Starting at a two-year college like Harcum, and then choosing a career or transfer path can be substantially less expensive than going to a similar four-year college. To be considered for financial aid, students should submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which is available in high school guidance offices, the Harcum Financial Aid Office, or via www.fafsa.ed.gov. The key to financial aid is beginning the process early. Harcum’s financial aid staff will work with students to develop a package of aid that best meets their financial needs and academic goals. Harcum supports you in ways beyond the pocketbook. Consider that: • Harcum’s Health Center provides evaluation and treatment of injuries and illnesses for all Harcum students. Counseling Services offers students personal, career and academic counseling for all students. Workshops are offered to advance wellness, personal growth and self-discovery.

• Career and transfer counseling services work closely with students to refine career goals, help prepare resumes, and find career possibilities. Group workshops and individual counseling focus on career exploration, career preparation and job search strategies. Transfer services are designed to help students who want to transfer to four-year institutions after earning an associate’s degree at Harcum. Counselors help students with college selection, application procedures and essay writing. An annual Transfer Fair brings representatives of four-year institutions to campus for direct consultations with students. • The Student Government Association (SGA) responds to the needs of students and works with students, faculty and administrators to offer solutions to academic and social concerns. • The honor society at Harcum, Phi Theta Kappa(PTK), recognizes and encourages scholarship among two-year college students. PTK membership is one of the highest honors a Harcum student can receive, and members are part of an annual induction ceremony.
