Message from the President Dear Friends, It’s a very exciting time at Harcum! We started Fall 2009 with our highest enrollment in the past twenty-five years with 1,152 students. Of that total, 451 are new students. This record increase is a testament to the relevancy of career preparatory educational programs in this challenging economy. We continue to add programs with Pre-Nursing and Occupational Therapy Assisting debuting this Fall. Overseeing the quality and development of our curricula is Julia Ingersoll, newly appointed Vice President of Academic Affairs & Legal Affairs and Dr. Donna Parker, recently hired as Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs. One of our major areas of focus is scholarships. There is a great need among current and prospective students who hope to realize their educational goal at Harcum College during a time of scarce financial resources. Students struggle with expenses as lending has diminished considerably. Among those special needs is the ability of a student to live on campus. Although we have the capacity, many students can’t make it work financially. These are usually the very students who would benefit greatly by being in a stable residential environment. This is an area where alumni can make a huge difference.Your contributions to the Harcum Fund earmarked for scholarships would help immeasurably. It is my belief that every student who studies at Harcum College should have some exposure to the fine arts. Learning through the arts is not only part of our history, it has proven to support greater academic achievement.Whether it is visual arts, music, dance, or drama individual differences in culture, educational background, and ability are often melded through this exposure. Our commitment to the arts includes continued efforts to renovate The Little Theatre and Richter Hall. Eventually, we will celebrate the arts, in varying forms, from one end of the campus to the other. Sachi Mallach, who has joined Harcum as Vice President of College Advancement, will be spearheading our efforts to obtain the resources to realize these aspirations. The next few pages celebrate Homecoming 2009. Despite an onslaught by a cold and dreary nor’easter, it was a busy and fun-filled day with record attendance—a craft fair in Klein Hall, family activities in the student lounge, volleyball and basketball in the gym were all heavily attended. There was also an alumni tea at the President’s House in the afternoon where alumni achievement was recognized and members of the Class of 1959 received their golden bear pins in honor of their 50th reunion. It was also the debut of Hatcher, the Harcum bear. You’ll love him. The following pages will update you on all that is happening here at Harcum College. It’s important to me that you get involved and keep in touch. We’re a relatively small family but we have great things to celebrate together. The MyHarcum.com website is a great way to connect with your classmates and friends. There are always opportunities for you to continue your relationship with the Harcum family—mentoring students, joining the alumni board or sharing your ideas. I particularly enjoy hearing from you and knowing about your journey. Best regards,

Jon Jay DeTemple, Ph.D.

Homecoming Despite the cold, rainy weather, Harcum’s Homecoming was a great success, attracting members of the Harcum alumni, students and their families and even members of the local community!

Heidi Steppacher, Raheem Shaw and Sherell Brown sold raffles to benefit the early childhood education program.

Harcum’s First Annual Craft Fair premiered in Klein Hall featuring a wide range of items including eclectic jewelry, dolls, fancy hula hoops, knitted apparel, holiday decorations and sweet treats. Family activities on the second floor—children’s crafts, games and a DJ—drew crowds throughout the day. Earlier in the morning, our Dental, EFDA and Veterinary Technology Programs hosted continuing education classes in the Academic Center. Dental student table top presentations were displayed in the library. Coffee and conversation with Dr. DeTemple was held in the Student Lounge where he discussed his vision for Harcum with several members from the class of 1959. Harcum’s athletics were well represented, too. The Women’s Volleyball team earned their 13th win of the season in a game against Morris College in the Klein Gym. The men’s basketball team hosted a clinic for kids who were eager to shoot with the team. For the second year, the Lady Bears Women’s Basketball team took on the Lady Bears Alumni team in an exciting game in the late afternoon. Rounding out the day was the Alumni Tea held at the President’s House where the National Alumni Awards were presented (see pages 4 and 5) and the class of 1959 received their golden bear pins in recognition of their 50th reunion. “Hatcher” the Harcum Bear made a guest appearance! “I get excited thinking about [this year’s Homecoming]” said President Jon Jay DeTemple in a campus-wide email: “the good times people had, the re-connections, the building of new friendships. We successfully put our best foot forward.”

Harcum Students Bring New Cheerleading Program to Life During the summer of 2009, current firstyear student and Human Services major Latasha Oliver brainstormed ideas for the first ever Harcum Bears Cheerleading Program. Advisor Janelle Williams, admissions counselor, was recruited to assist and guide a group of students anxious to get the program off the ground. Prior to the Fall semester, Williams helped the students secure funding for uniforms, recruited two coaches, and began the process of making cheerleading a sustainable program for the future at Harcum. Coach Chaka Moore holds over 20 years of professional dance experience and Assistant Coach Erneisha Moore will lead in cheer. Erneisha has over 17 years of cheerleading & coaching experience. The Harcum Bears Cheerleading squad will not only raise morale during athletic events, they’ll engage in spirit-based initiatives on campus, like “Spirit Mondays” and “Professional Wednesdays.” On Mondays, the squad will dress in their cheerleading uniforms to promote Harcum Athletics, and as the squad prepares for the working world, they will dress business casual on Wednesdays. The squad will also be required to perform 30 hours of community service each semester.

The Tournament that Wasn’t…Was a Great Success! Although the Kevin D. Marlo Golf Classic did not take place on the course in 2009, generous sponsors did bring in the green for student scholarships, raising over $31,000. This year we will be celebrating the tournament’s 10th anniversary. Join us on June 28, 2010 at Llanerch Country Club in Havertown, PA as we hit the fairway. Help us make 2010 a Hole in One.

Harcum kicked off its Fall 2009 Semester with a record enrollment of 1,152 students, the highest number in decades. Of that total, 451 are new students. This number reflects the hard work of College faculty, staff and administration in developing new programs based on business and professional needs, recruiting new students and making students happy and productive at Harcum.

Academics

Development

After conducting an extensive search, Harcum has a newVice President of Academic Affairs and Legal Affairs, Julia Ingersoll. Julia moved from her former position as head of Human Resources and Legal Affairs in September. The College continues to seek additional site approval to add to its eight Leadership Program sites. New programs begun this Fall are Pre-Nursing and Occupational Therapy. Continuing Studies EFDA offerings are given both offsite and on the main campus. A new program in dental anesthesia is being developed and faculty are being trained.

Sachiko Mallach joined Harcum in August as the new Vice President of College Advancement bringing experience from her work in higher education at the University of New Mexico and most recently with the Chester County Historical Society. Her priorities include engaging alumni and community support for Harcum to complete key projects, such as the LittleTheatre renovation and to raise money for scholarships. There’s more about her plans in this issue of Patches on page 12.

Grants Harcum was the recipient of a Federal earmark in the amount of $287,000.The College will use these funds in support of technology in the form of the development of additional ‘smart’ classrooms and upgrading student computers and technology in the library.Additional funding is being requested in the coming year. The Ethel Sergeant Clark Smith Memorial Fund awarded the College a gift of $10,000 in March for technology upgrades to the Dental computer lab. A $14,500 grant from the McLean Contributionship underwrote the purchase of a new dental operatory in the clinic. The Pennsylvania Higher Education Fund awarded the Nursing Program $42,077 for scholarships with an additional $4,477 from the Independence Blue Cross Supplemental and $8,547 from the Edna McKenzie Scholarship program.

Harcum in the News

A small fire in the Academic Center on March 5 caused minimal short-term damage but resulted in a long-term “green” advantage for Harcum as renovation work was completed over the summer. Carpeting, lighting, paint, sprinkler systems and ceiling tiles were replaced throughout the AC, using low-VOC (volatile organic compounds) paint, gluefree recylable carpet “tiles” and energy-efficient lighting. Faculty and student input in the design process resulted in color choices of pleasant shades of yellow, blue and grey in the paint and carpeting. Many students and faculty have commented positively on the AC’s new look. Harcum interior design students have presented a plan for a Victorian-style restoration of the Richter Hall front porch as a display space and reading/relaxation spot for students. The goal is to continue the process of integrating Richter Hall into academic and student life and eventually create an arts center for Harcum. Student lounges in Pennswood and Klein Halls have new furniture and other upgrades to the physical plant are in the works.

The Philadelphia Business Journal reported in May on Harcum’s first graduating class of neurodiagnostic technicians, and a July interview with a 2009 Harcum graduate, Katy Frishmuth, was featured as an Inside View on Carolyn Lawrence’s popular blog admissionsadvice.com

Online Connections The Harcum.edu website has been updated with new program content and new links. In addition to its longstanding MySpace page on the Internet, Harcum now has its own Facebook and Twitter pages featuring a variety of campus information, Harcum stories, links and news stories. Harcum’s Lady Bears volleyball team also has a new Facebook page. And of course, check in on MyHarcum.edu to stay in touch with classmates and friends.

Hello, Harcum Alumni and Friends! s a new member of Harcum’s team, I’d like to introduce myself. I’m thrilled to be part of your college and hope to have the opportunity to meet you. Harcum is a unique place and, like many things in life, its challenges are helping to make it stronger. The College has transformed itself in some fundamental ways since Edith Harcum established the school in 1915.What has been interesting to me is that while students’ experiences at Harcum have varied from decade to decade, the Harcum alumni with whom I have met share some interesting traits. Regardless of when they graduated or from what program, Harcum alumni are achievers. To use an expression from the 1950s, Harcum “girls” become powerful, spirited, determined Harcum women. in development, I have never met so many alumni who have founded or are running their own businesses. They are active contributors to their professions, their families, their religious congregations and communities. They are not afraid to take risks to realize their dreams.

It’s my hope that more Harcum alumni will channel that energy and enthusiasm back into their alma mater. Unlike larger institutions, Harcum is a place where individual contributions of time, expertise and dollars make a real and immediate impact. In the brief time I’ve been at Harcum, I can see that once our alumni put their minds to something, they achieve it.Think of the difference we can make at Harcum by working together!” Please let me know your thoughts and feedback. The design problem was to create a dining experience which will allow customers to become more involved in the many processes—from preparation to presentation—surrounding the creation of a meal. The venue will also incor-

A Family Affair by Suzanne Cotter Brenda Mason started a family trend when she returned to school in 2004 at the age of 50.With a home to maintain and an education to cultivate, she knew she needed a school that was invested in her success. “I had been in and out of community colleges while my children were growing up,” explains Mason,“but I was looking for an academic experience that would support, encourage and empower my educational growth and development.” When Ms. Mason came to Harcum in the fall of ‘04, this support was exactly what she found. “The faculty and staff at Harcum modeled a spirit of dedication, professionalism and limitless possibilities,” she remembers; “from the first day I set foot on campus, I was supported, challenged and empowered to pursue the educational journey I’ve held in my heart since graduating from high school in 1971.” One professor’s encouraging words challenged Ms. Mason to “let my age work as an advantage instead of a handicap,” she recalls. Immersing herself in the college experience, she participated in several departments across campus; she served as a peer mentor, tutor and counselor, took an Internship at the Bryn Mawr Health System, and even participated in the yearbook committee during her senior year. All the while, Mason found time to study, relax and occasionally enjoy a picnic lunch at Harcum’s serene suburban campus.

Ms. Mason graduated from Harcum in 2006 with an Associate’s deg ree in Psychology.Through the McBride Scholars Program for non- traditional college age students, she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Bryn Mawr College in 2009, concentrating in Education and Gender and Sexuality Studies. Presently, Ms. Mason is a Bryn Mawr College graduate student enrolled in a dual degree program to earn her Master of SocialWork and Social Research, and Master of Law and Social Policy. “It is my intention to use my skills to further my work in counseling, and supporting individuals challenged to live with a positive HIV diagnosis.” Mason explains. She hopes to one day encourage others to engage in safer sex practices in an effort of prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS. Ms. Mason’s son-in-law, Raheem Shaw, had reservations about returning to college at the age of 27. Uncertainty about the application process seemed daunting, especially several years after high school graduation. However, through witnessing the success of his mother-in-law, Raheem finally found the motivation to mail his application. Shaw started classes in the fall of 2009 in the Early Childhood Education program. “Raheem couldn’t believe the ease of the application process,” said Dean of Admissions, Nicola DiFronzo-Heitzer, who served as a mentor during the process. Also following the family trend, Brenda’s son Leonard Mason, started taking classes at Harcum a few years ago, planning to earn a Psychology degree. When asked if she encouraged son-inlaw Raheem and son Leonard to pursue a Harcum degree, she responded:“Of course! However,” she continued, “witnessing my personal and academic growth was the major factor in their decision to attend Harcum… they both felt they could come to Harcum and forge their own individual paths.”

On April 22, 2009 alums from the Philadelphia region enjoyed Make-up and Martinis at Saks Fifth Avenue in Bala Cynwyd, PA. Proceeds benefited the Harcum Fund. Participants received a discount on their purchases and enjoyed refreshments and free beauty consultations.

Leslie Mickles, RN-BC, MSN, EdD(c) Assistant Professor of Nursing at Harcum has received a new certification by passing the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Certification in Nursing Professional Staff Development. Nursing Professional Development practice provides learning activities intended to build on the education and clinical expertise of practicing professional nurses post academia. These learning activities are designed to enhance nursing practice, education, administration, research, and theory development with the goal of promoting quality patient care in pace with constant medical advances.

Carole Champlin Program Director for General Studies will be visiting Portugal for a conference on a new teaching technique. Donna Broderick Director of Medical Laboratory Technology & Allied Health Science traveled to Louisville, KY to serve as a Poultry Judge at the 2009 National 4-H Poultry and Egg Conference held in November. The annual conference allows 4-Hers from all over the country to compete in educational events that help them learn to make and defend decisions, speak publicly, and gain poultry-related skills. Donna’s team is currently ranked #1 in the Nation.

Eligibility criteria to sit for the exam includes holding a current, active RN license in a state or territory of the United States or the professional, legally recognized equivalent in another country, hold a baccalaureate or higher degree in nursing, having a minimum of 4,000 hours of clinical practice in nursing professional development within the last five years, and having completed 30 hours of continuing education. The American Nurses Credentialing Center is the largest and most prestigious nurse credentialing organization in the United States. ANCC's certification and portfolio recognition programs validate nurses' skills, knowledge, and abilities. ANCC board certification and recognition empowers nurses within their professional sphere of activity and contributes to better patient outcomes. More than a quarter million nurses have been certified by ANCC since 1990, and more than 75,000 advanced practice nurses are currently certified by ANCC. “We are all very proud of Leslie's accomplishment” said Dr. Marian Slater, Program Director for Nursing.

When she returned, she wrote an article “A Quaker’s Quest in Poland”, which was accepted for publication by the Friends Journal in 2009. She is currently working on a new project, “Shadows on the Stage” based on correspondence concerning the Quaker Mission that was recently discovered in an archive in Warsaw, Poland. Dr. Richard Cooper Director of Disability Support Services is presenting at a conference titled “Accommodating Students with Disabilities from High School to University: Implications for Teaching & Learning”, on Nov. 13th at the Desmond Conference Center in Malvern, PA.

Lyn Back ESL teacher In 1999, after returning to the United States from a difficult year working with a peace team in Serbia and Kosovo, Lyn Back discovered a book long out of print. The book “We Didn’t Ask Utopia” was written by a Quaker couple who lived in Russia in 1937. It made such a powerful impression on Lyn, who is also a Quaker, that she began researching the life of the authors, Rebecca Sinclair Janney and her husband Harry Timbres. Based on her research, Lyn wrote a Pendle Hill pamphlet, “Rebecca Janney Timbres Clark, Turned in the Hand of God” in 2007. Following completion of that project, Lyn worked as a consultant for the American Friends Service Committee researching the Quaker Mission

1983 Bonny (Mumbauer) Millar Bonnie (Markovitz) Schatz Hello to the ladies in the Expanded Function Dental Assisting Class of 1979! I have fond memories of those 2 years we spent together as the very first EFDA class at Harcum and of our instructor Darlene Van Bemmel Ryan. (Seems like a lifetime ago!) I hope all of you are doing well!

Helene (Soltus McBride) Sallo I have fond memories of my friends Brenda Caufman, Rhonda Harner & Wendy Haverstick. What ever became of you all? I came back to live in the Phila area 3 years ago. The Harcum days seem forever ago!

WINTER 2009

I am currently living in Old Tappan, NJ with my 17 year old daughter Krissy. I would love to hear from all my friends from Harcum. I am working as an administrative assistant in a local construction firm. I cannot believe how the years have flown by. I may be reached by e-mail at mmoyni@aol.com.

I graduated with honors in 1983 and completed the Vet Tech practicums in 1984. I started work at the New Bolton Center at the University of Pennsylvania the day after completing my large animal practicum. I was a medicine charge nurse for five years, specializing in neonatology. I then moved to Rhone Poulenc Rorer to work as a toxicology technician for two years. I met my husband in 1990 and moved to England the following year. Upon arrival in the UK I was head hunted for the job of Head Nurse at the prestigious Rossdale and Partners Equine practice in Newmarket. Over the past 16 years I have assisted in the design and implementation of a purpose built hospital, was on the team responsible for the foundation work on the Equine Nursing certificate with the Royal

College of Vet Surgeon (RCVS). I have also examined and assessed competency for the RCVS, lectured, published, trained scores of nurses and vet interns, and work as an ambulatory nurse for our local racing yards and stud farms. Last year I became the president of the national representative body-The British Veterinary Nursing Association. Quite an accomplishment for a vet tech student from Pennsylvania who was told, by the Harcum course director at the time, that a career change should be considered. It was felt that I did not have the ability to pass exams or grasp the content of the syllabus (I graduated with honors).

Hi! I am living in Exton, PA and am working at Sunrise of Paoli as a medication care manager. In addition, I am also certified as a Home Health Aide. October 20, 2007 I got married to a wonderful man named Jim. I am definitely going to purOur wedding sue the healthcare reception at field. Life is great. Vickers Tavern

I am now Susan Hall-Prince, and am happily married to a great man who has 2 beautiful children, ages 14 and 11. I am presently working in a dental office as a hygienist, and am in my 4th semester at Penn College of Technology going towards my bachelor’s degree in Health Policy and Administration. The clinical aspect is getting to be too tiresome for me. I hope to hear from some of my classmates from the hygiene program class of 2000, and hope you all are doing well.

I hope I do not come across as bragging, that is not my intention. What I want to convey to Harcum vet tech students is to not give up if you truly feel committed to your chosen field of study. We do not all thrive in a classroom environment and many of us prefer hands-on instruction alongside theory. I could have easily quit and ended up never leaving my comfort zone if it weren’t for my desire to see veterinary nursing progress.

After graduating from Harcum in 1999 I have since graduated from Drexel University with a degree in drug and alcohol counseling. I just started an internship and I am still working full time at Staples. I really believe my time at Harcum was helpful and would love to hear from any of my classmates. I was good friends with Jennifer Slear ’98 & Joanna Rossi ’98.

It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a list of my class members. Life is good and it’s neat to see how many people’s lives have changed. I’m currently living in Mexico. My husband is Mexican and teaches music and we have two cute little boys. I do dental clinics here in Mexico with a dentist and it is such an incredible experience, like no other. I should really have a group of dental hygienists come down and experience what it’s like to cleaning villagers’ teeth here. Many have never had cleaning and you can only imagine what stuff you find. Hope everyone is well.
