The Rising Tide The Tiny Pacific Nations at the Forefront of Global Change Tom Bamforth

Draft Cover

Vanuatu. The Cook Islands. The Philippines. The names evoke white-sand beaches, swaying palms and lazy holidays. But in reality, these idyllic places are tropical maelstroms of global realpolitik, caught in a constant tussle between the world’s superpowers. Collectively the Pacific nations, which form one third of the globe’s surface area, are one of the most strategically important regions in the world – for military might, for energy security and geopolitical borders. Even more importantly, these nations are at the frontline of climate change, as rising sea levels put their very existence at stake. Using his extensive personal experience in the Pacific, Tom Bamforth shows us at a human level the environmental crisis and political and social realities that threaten the lives and cultures of the people of these island nations. In fact, the very existence of the nations themselves is at stake. From uprisings in New Caledonia to tsunamis in Tonga and coups in Fiji, Tom examines the devastating effects of climate change and the continuing legacy of nuclear testing, natural disasters and colonial rule. This is the story of an emergency going on right now – this is a history of the present. Publication

remake it for the better. Economist Jason Murphy looks at the huge incentive systems we take for granted – like rewards and punishments, or price – and turns them on their head. Many of the most powerful incentives in our daily lives are accidental, and invisible even to those who designed them. Some are tame – like board games – and some are most definitely not. Whether it’s bounties for criminals, Candy Crush, Instagrammable meals or the Nobel Prize, incentives regularly fail and often have unintended consequences that can have very global effects. In lively, entertaining prose, Murphy takes a fascinating deep dive into history, culture and our everyday lives to show us what we can learn from incentives to use (or lose) in our daily lives.

Author Details Jason Murphy is an economist who has worked at the Australian Treasury, the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Nauru, and the Australian Financial Review. He writes regularly for news.com.au and Crikey, blogs at thomasthethinkengine.com and has a passion for bringing economics into the everyday world.

Key Information • • • • • • • •

Murphy has an established audience on news.com.au, where he regularly reaches over 100,000 readers for his articles. Murphy also has a weekly Crikey column, with an average of 80,000 readers each week, and own blog, with 6,000 unique hits/month; Twitter profile is 4,500 and growing. Murphy's writing is entertaining and highly readable, in the vein of Freakonomics. Broad appeal across both a traditional business readership and popular economics/science/history readership, e.g. readers of Malcolm Gladwell, Adam Spencer, Dr Karl, David Hunt’s Girt. Huge marketing and publicity campaign lined up for release with interviews, extracts and reviews placed across national newspapers, TV and radio outlets. Print and advertising campaign on release. Influencer campaign planned for release with key endorsements. Scott Pape is a fan (he and Jason have shared mutual love on Twitter) and we will seek high-profile endorsements such as Pape and George Megalogenis pre-publication.

Step into the world of a new generation of modern gypsies: a range of professionals and creatives who have ditched conventional houses for the freedom of the road and the beauty of the outdoors. Vanlife Diaries celebrates the nomadic lifestyle and community through interviews, advice for living on the road, and more than two hundred photos of these tiny rolling homes. The book features vanlifers, their pets, and their converted vans and buses – VWs, Sprinters, Toyotas, and more – as well as the stunning natural locations that are part of the movement’s inspiration. Interviews and narrative captions share the stories of these dreamers and seekers, their inspiration for downsizing, how they found and converted their vehicle, and what it’s like to work and live on the road.

Author Details Kathleen Morton is a freelance journalist and photographer based in Colorado. She is a co-founder and one-third of the Vanlife Diaries team. She blogs about vanlife on her website Tiny House, Tiny Footprint and travels in an ‘87 Toyota van with her dog, Peaches. FORE WORD

Kit and J. R. take a break from tending the fire to play music with each other. A few years back, Kit made a vow that she would create something everyday. “The act of creation,

in itself, is enough, because when I’m creating, I’m my fullest self, and that’s what makes me wake up every morning to greet the gold light of day.”

And now this is a movement. People heard our calls, they listened to our musings. Today, we are part of a rumble, an uprising that will soon explode. Modern life as it’s “supposed to be” has been deconstructed. Now, we survey the raw materials that remain. We long to utilize our resources more responsibly.

3

It’s an exciting time to be alive. This community is seeking out alternatives to the debt-work-consume cycle that rules life in the new millennium. We live out of vehicles to have time to chase our passions. We choose to live on less. Off the grid of normalcy we venture, hoping in our quest to construct a new normal. Out on our own terms, we’re discovering a better, saner way to live. This search isn’t anything new. It’s a continuation of something so much older than any of us. There have always been travelers and seekers, in every culture, from every walk of life. They, too, wandered the open roads. Those young idealists spotted glimmers of hope, forged paths to a saner life. Now, we’ve been handed their vision. It is our duty to continue their search.

RYAN AND CHRISTINA’S GO-TO ITEMS Coffee (preground, enough to last the trip): “We use a percolator over a cooking stove or over a fire outdoors. If you want to survive in the winter, get yourself a Snow Peak Folding Torch to help get the fire started.” Christina’s journals: “We’re super into travel journals, and we love looking back at them over time. Christina illustrates the trip we’re on and documents the people we meet. We also tape the treasures we find inside so we have some souvenirs.” Coloring books and teddy bears: “This helps us get through any trip as the young ones entertain themselves in the back.”

The Heart of a Boy Celebrating the Strength and Spirit of Boyhood Kate T Parker From Kate T. Parker, bestselling author and photographer ofStrong Is the New Pretty (329,000 copies in print), a photographic celebration of what makes a boy, with portraits and quotations from today's boys, ages 5–18. In her international bestseller Strong Is the New Pretty (with 329,000 copies in print), the photographer Kate T. Parker changed the way we see girls by showing us their truest selves – fearless, messy, wild, stubborn, proud. Now it’s time to talk about our boys. Prompted by the #metoo movement, bullying, and other toxic behaviour, there’s an inational conversation going on about what defines masculinity and how to raise sons to become good people. And Kate Parker is joining in by turning her lens to boys. The result is possibly even more moving, more eloquent, more surprising than Strong.

The Heart of a Boy is a deeply felt celebration of boyhood as it’s etched in the faces and bodies of dozens of boys, ages 5 to 18. There’s the pensive look of a skateboarder caught in a moment between rides. The years of dedication in a ballet dancer’s poise. The love of a younger brother hugging his older brother. The unself-conscious joy of a goofy grin with a missing tooth. The casual intimacy of two friends at a lemonade stand. The shyness of a lone boy and his model boat. The intensity in a football huddle. The proud, challenging gaze of a boy bald from alopecia – and the same kind of gaze, but wreathed in tenderness, of a boy a few years younger with flowing, almost waist-length hair. There are guitarists, fencers, wrestlers, star-gazers, a pilot – it’s the world of our sons, in all their amazing variety and difference. The photographs feel spontaneous, direct, and with so much eye contact between the viewed and the viewer that it’s impossible to turn away. And throughout, words from the boys themselves enrich every photo. What a gift for boys and anyone who is raising them.

Author Details Kate T. Parker is a mother, wife, former collegiate soccer player, Ironman, and professional photographer who shoots both fine art projects and commercial work for clients across North America. HerStrong Is the New Prett y photo series has led to collaborations with brands like Athleta, Kellogg’s, Oxygen, and Girls on the Run. The project has also inspired Kate to launch a philanthropic arm of Strong Is the New Pretty, partnering with organisations that invest in girls’ health and education. When she’s not photographing, she can be found coaching her daughters’ soccer teams. She lives with her family in Atlanta, Georgia.

There's a national conversation happening about masculinity and how best to raise our sons. Publications from the New Yorker ("How to Raise a Boy") to Time Magazine ("How to Raise a Sweet Son in an Era of Angry Men") to the New York Times ("The Boys Are Not All Right") are posing the question about how to raise our sons to become good people. Kate T. Parker's view of boys will be embraced by parents, teachers, coaches, counsellors, and boys themselves, as she celebrates all that makes a boy who he is. She has a gift for capturing a child's spirit in her portraits, and for showcasing children's true selves in photos and their words. Kate T. Parker celebrated girls and all the varied ways they show strength, and readers of all ages embraced her message and her beautiful photographs; Strong Is the New Pretty reached 260,000 copies in print worldwide within its first year of publication. This book will appeal to parents as a positive celebration of boyhood and to boys who will see themselves, and who they might be, in these portraits and stories.

H Here’s how Vantablack actually works. When a photon hits a Vantablack surface, instead of being reflected, it becomes trapped between the carbon nanotubes. It bounces around in there for a bit before being absorbed and dissipating as heat.

ow dark is dark? How dark can something get? I’m not talking about the sort of jokes that leave you feeling uneasy. I’m talking about the darkest substances on Earth, those which absorb the most light without reflecting anything back. The good people at Surrey NanoSystems have created a chemical called Vantablack (Vertically Aligned Carbon Nanotube Arrays) which absorbs up to 99.965% of radiation in the visible light spectrum. Ten thousand of these nanotubes of carbon, side to side, would be as wide as a human hair! That’s dark. But amazingly, it’s only a fraction better than the black feathers on a male superb bird of paradise. They absorb 99.95% of light.

o biggie, but just quietly, right at the top we’re about to debut an entirely new type of puzzle! Fresh from the mind of maths wiz and good mate Sean Gardiner, allow me to introduce ... the Syndesis. The fancy name describes the paired connections used in our next puzzle, as well as referencing firing neurons by way of synapsis, and the Greek word for logic. Nifty, eh? How do they work? The real beauty is their elegant simplicity. Enter the numbers 1 to 9 into each 3 × 3 grid so that each circled number is the result of adding, subtracting, multiplying, or dividing the two numbers in the cells it touches. To ease you into this world-first new puzzle, I’ve provided part of the answer for you. But don’t get too complacent — my generosity will gradually diminish as we count down! You’ll see more of these puzzles throughout the book and — who knows? — maybe elsewhere in the future. Whatever the case, you saw them here first. A worthy addition to our Top 100! Have fun.

Signs from Spirit

Signs From Departed Loved Ones We can all learn to notice signs from Spirit. Just like a friend who sends an emoji (smiley face) to your mobile phone to say ‘ hello’, ‘smile’, or ‘I’m thinking of you’, our departed loved ones say ‘ hi’ or ‘I’m here’ using our memories, mother nature, uncanny events, songs, feelings or even words from a stranger to deliver their message. 23

Keepsake letters, cards and photographs can also magically appear to deliver reassurance, comfort and love from the other side. -Mitchell

Chocolate Brownies Two years ago, seventeen-year-old Veronica’s Nanna passed unexpectedly in her sleep. Two weeks after the funeral, Veronica and her mum arrived at her Nanna’s house. With heavy hearts, they set about tagging the contents of her home as ‘ keep’ or ‘donate’. ‘Mum assigned me Nanny’s kitchen. She said sorting through the cupboards, utensils, appliances and cookbooks would help me relive all the happy cooking memories Nanny and I created together.’ As Veronica unplugged her Nanna’s Kenwood Chef mixer, a flood of tears washed down her cheeks. As if triggered by Veronica’s grief, her Nanna’s radio burst into song singing, ‘You are the dancing queen Young and sweet Only seventeen.’

‘It was so weird I stopped crying,’ said Veronica. ‘Nanny was a foodie long before it was fashionable to be one. As a joke one Christmas, I bought her a CD called Cooking Songs. She loved it so much she dedicated a recipe to each song on the album. Abba’s ‘Dancing Queen’ was her chocolate brownie baking song.’ Veronica turned up the volume. As she did, her Nanna’s cookbooks escaped their book ends and slapped down on the kitchen bench like a line of dominos.

Signs from Spirit

‘One piece of paper escaped the pile and floated down onto the floor. When I picked it up, there in Nanny’s handwriting was her well-guarded secret chocolate brownie recipe.’ Veronica was so excited she hugged the recipe whispering, ‘Thank you, Nanny.’ At that moment, treasured memories of baking with her Nanna flashed back. Veronica was in her Nanna’s kitchen all over again. ‘Dancing Queen’ was playing, and the smell of chocolate brownies baking in the oven filled her with warmth and love. Even I could smell the brownies as Veronica’s Nanna asked me to deliver one last message before the reading finished.

‘Your Nanny says she couldn’t go without saying goodbye or passing on her secret chocolate brownie recipe to you.’

‘Invite your loved one to send a sign you will easily recognise. You may not receive one right away, but trust that when the time is right for both worlds, a sign will appear.’

In Eve, It’s Extortion, Al Wheeler is under pressure to crack a big case. Commissioner Lavers sends him to investigate the hit-and-run murder of a “no-good” lush called Henry Farnham. At least that’s what Henry was according to his widow. She’s a beautiful brunette who diligently looked after her husband, working hard and paying for everything ... including their hefty life insurance premiums. Is this a classic case of insurance fraud … or something more sinister?

Author Details Alan Geoffrey Yates (aka Carter Brown) was a literary phenomenon. Born in England, Yates married and settled in Australia in 1948. He worked as a film technician, a salesman and in public relations for Qantas before taking up writing full-time. The incredible early success of his Carter Brown novellas in the 1950s meant that he was contracted to produce one short novel and two long novels each and every month. In reality, he was truly prolific with 322 published Carter Brown novels. Carter Brown was a huge international success with reportedly 120 million books in print, second only to The Bible in terms of the number of languages they were translated into. There was a comic book series, the ‘Carter Brown Murder Mystery Hour’ on radio, three French films, a Japanese TV series, and a French literary award for ‘The most whiskies drunk in a single novel’. He was also rumoured to be one of John F. Kennedy’s favourite authors. Yates died in 1985 in Sydney. In 1997, he was posthumously awarded a Ned Kelly, Australia’s leading literary award for crime writing, for his lifelong contribution to the art.

Since the early 1950s, over 100 million Carter Brown novels have been sold around the world. Pacy, racy and cheesy – ‘nudge nudge wink wink’ fiction! ‘Pulp fiction, in its most innocent form, was written for eternally adolescent males. It featured guns, gals and wise-acre cops with a penchant for corny, hard-boiled dialogue. The almost astonishing thing about the Carter Brown stories is the fact that he could weave his way through this phalluscentric age of fiction without his work becoming misogynistic. Possibly this is because the author himself was incapable of such behaviour. Sparks of Phoenix Najwa Zebian Sparks of Phoenix – Najwa Zebian’s third book of poetry – takes readers on a powerful journey of healing. As the phoenix emerges from its ashes, Zebian emerges ablaze in these pages, not only as a survivor of abuse, but as a teacher and healer for all those who have struggled to understand, reclaim, and rise above a history of pain. The book is divided into six chapters, and six stages of healing: Falling, Burning to Ashes, Sparks of Phoenix, Rising, Soaring, and finally, A New Chapter, which demonstrates a healthy response to new love as the result of authentic healing. With her characteristic vulnerability, courage, and softness, Zebian seeks to empower those who have been made to feel ashamed, silenced, or afraid; she urges them, through gentle advice and personal revelation, to raise their voices, rise up, and soar.

Author Details Najwa Zebian is a Lebanese-Canadian author, speaker, and educator. Her passion for language was evident from a young age, as she delved into Arabic poetry and novels. The search for a home – what Najwa describes as a place where the soul and heart feel at peace – was central to her early years. When she arrived in Canada at the age of sixteen, she felt unstable and adrift in an unfamiliar place. Nevertheless, she completed her education, and went on to become a teacher as well as a doctoral candidate in educational leadership. Her first students, a group of young refugees, led her back to her original passion: writing. She began to heal her sixteen-year-old self by writing to heal her students. Since self-publishing her first collection of poetry and prose in 2016, Najwa has become an inspiration to millions of people worldwide. Drawing on her own experiences of displacement, discrimination, and abuse, Najwa uses her words to encourage others to build a home within themselves; to live, love, and create fearlessly.

To heal from your pain now, you need to go all the way back to chapter one. To page one. To the beginning of how it all began. For every ending, there is a once upon a time. For every broken soul, there is a once upon a happy soul. For every phoenix soaring, there is a phoenix burning, turning to ashes, rising, then soaring.

I The Burning

Let me hand you the matches to ignite the glory within your soul. Let me be the one who burns to ashes as you spark in your darkest of nights. As you rise. As you soar.

He asks me: “What do you want from me?” I stare at him in silence with tears fighting to stay buried inside my eyes, with thoughts swirling in my mind like a hurricane. “What do you want from me?” he asks over and over. I am confused because I know and I don’t know.

You lit my soul on fire and told me to watch it burn.

How do you expect me to tell you what I want from you when I want every part of you? I want your heart to be my blanket every night. I want your soul to revive me every second of every minute of every hour of every day. Silly man, stop asking me what I want from you. I want you.
