Letting Go.
Recycling.
Recycling may be presented as a green solution, and it is definitely preferable to landfill, but it still uses a lot of resources. Those recyclables still need to be collected, sorted and processed back into ‘new’ products. That is why recycling is the last consideration in the waste hierarchy, to come only after reusing and repairing. Before consigning anything to the recycling, take the time to consider if there’s a better alternative. If you have any packaging, or any unrepairable, worn out and broken items then you need to find out where they can be recycled. More things are recyclable than you might expect – the trick is finding out where or how to recycle them. Kerbside recycling (if you have it) often collects only a fraction of what can actually be recycled.
The first step is to check what recycling services your local council offer. ¾¾ If you have a kerbside recycling collection, check exactly what materials can be recycled in this way and how they need to be packed. Ring the council or service provider if you’re not sure or have any doubts. Many councils will take paper and cardboard, glass, aluminium cans and foil, steel cans and plastics type 1 and 2 in kerbside recycling. ¾¾

Councils sometimes offer subsidized or even free services for collection of larger items including furniture, mattresses and white goods. Transfer stations are usually open to the public and are places to take hazardous chemicals and larger items, or items not collected by the council. Check which refuse facilities are located in your area, what they take and what limits and restrictions they have on quantities. If you have a choice between mixed recycling (kerbside recycling bins, for example) and recycling that is separated at source (bottle banks for coloured glass), choose the latter. It reduces both the chance of contamination and the handling and sorting required by the recycling company, which increases their margins and makes the commodity more valuable (and more likely to be recycled).
Supermarkets, large hardware stores and big retailers will sometimes run recycling programs as part of their corporate social responsibility initiatives. ¾¾
These are usually for products that they sell themselves, and include batteries, light bulbs, textiles and water filter cartridges.

Soft and noisy plastics (like plastic bags and food packaging) can often be recycled in supermarkets and sometimes big box retailers or department stores.

Often after the festive season companies will collect greetings cards for recycling.

Manufacturers will sometimes take back their products for recycling. In some countries this is a legal requirement, but because it is a cost to the company, they are not always keen to advertise it! Check their websites, or call them to ask. Electronics manufacturers and retailers sometimes take back electronic equipment, printer cartridges and cables. If you can’t find a general eWaste collector, try contacting the manufacturer for their recommendations.
Some charity shops will specifically collect textiles for recycling (as opposed to textiles for resale). Usually it is the bigger organisations that do this, so enquire before dropping them off. If you have textiles that are only suitable to be used as rags, keep them separate and label them clearly – it will save someone having to sort through them later.
Recycling Resources When it comes to the ‘maybe’ pile, I’vvfound that there are a few common excuses I’d be telling myself. Recycling can be complicated. The good news is, far more items are recyclable than you might think! However, finding out where to take those items so that they can be recycled can be tricky. If your council or municipality don’t recycle certain items or materials, and can’t advise you on how to dispose of it responsibly, these resources should help you find alternatives. Many manufacturers accept their own products back for recycling so check the brand websites to see if they offer this service.
Global H & M – A global fast fashion brand that accepts old clothes and unwanted textiles (any brand, in any condition) at many of their stores worldwide. Nike – Offers a reuse-a-shoe service, accepting any brand of athletic shoe through most of its Nike stores in the UA and Europe, and recycling the material for new products. Terracycle – specialises in recycling hard-torecycle consumer waste through a range of free sponsored programs, and some paid programs where boxes are purchased, filled with the recyclable material and shipped back. Australia Recycle Near You – allows anyone to search for what can and can’t be recycled in their household recycling services, as well as search for drop-off locations to recycle a wide range of items. DropZone – a nationwide recycling service for televisions, computers, printers and peripherals. E Cycle Solutions – nationwide recycling for televisions, computers, printers and peripherals.
EPSA eWaste – nationwide recycling service for televisions, computers, printers and peripherals. TechCollect – a free national recycling service for computers, computer accessories and TVs.. Paintback – diverts unwanted paint and packaging from ending up in landfill or waterways, with collection points nationwide. USA Earth911 – one of North America’s most extensive recycling databases, with over 350 materials and 100,0000 listings included. Electronics Takeback Coalition – their website includes information about “e-stewards” and retailers who offer take-back schemes. E-Stewards – A global team upholding a safe, ethical, and globally responsible standard for e-waste recycling and refurbishment. Their website has a database of certified responsible electronics recyclers. Levi Strauss – partnered with I:CO to allow anyone to drop off no-longer-wanted clothing or shoes (any brand) in the collection boxes.

Changing Habits.
Change isn’t always easy: new habits take time, patience and resilience. You have to do things consciously until they become unconscious. Decluttering your home of everything you no longer love or need is not a process that most people can do in a single go. Keeping spaces clutter-free is not a case of tidying the whole house, thinking – right, I’m never letting it get messy again! (Yes, that was me. I have no idea what made me think that I could go from messy person to tidy person following one afternoon of cleaning.) Think of decluttering and tidying as muscles – the more you exercise them, the stronger they get. It can take six months to make a new behaviour into a habit, so don’t get disheartened if you struggle at first. You might be trying to change habits that you’ve been committed to for years; possibly even decades. Rewiring those habits is unlikely to happen overnight. Keep on going and it will get easier! The process of change can be divided into five stages. We can enter and exit at any stage in this process, and we can cycle between two stages many times before moving onto the next one.
Pre-contemplation
This is where we don’t even realise there’s a need to change. Maybe everyone else around us does, but we can’t (or won’t) see it. There is no intention to take any action in the near future.
Contemplation
Contemplation is where we realise that there is something that we would like to change, but we’re not at the point of doing anything about it … yet. The awareness is there, and maybe we’re thinking about making some changes wvithin the next six months.
Determination
We realise that there is a need or desire to change, and we’ve decided to do something about it. We intend to start within the next month. Maybe we’ve already made some first steps – made some enquiries, researched some information– but we haven’t actually acted yet. The good news is, by reading this book, you’ve decided you’d like to make a change, and you are already at this stage!
Action
We make a change. We’ve changed our behaviour within the last six months and we’re working towards making this new behaviour a habit. As you work through decluttering your home, you may swing between ‘Action’ and ‘Determination’. This isn’t going backwards; it’s all part of the process.
Maintenance
We’ve made these changes a habit and we’ve been doing them for more than six months, and there’s no intention to go back to our old ways! If it all gets too much or it’s making you stress … then just … slow … down. Or stop, if you need to. Take a break. If you’re feeling resistance, that’s understandable. We tie a lot of our hopes and dreams and wants and fears into our possessions, and when we let go of our possessions, we have to deal with these too. That can be hard. It’s okay to have bad days. Wait until you’re feeling ready, and get back on the bandwagon. Don’t feel guilty if you can’t get rid of something despite knowing it is not useful or beautiful. You can come back to it later. Everything you do is a step in the right direction, and things get easier over time. You haven’t failed until you stop trying.

You’ll find La Ronde amusement park (see p. xxx) and striking structures built for the Expo ’67 world fair: an iconic geodesic dome (now the Biosphère environment museum) and the French and Québec pavilions (now Montreal’s casino). The park’s playlist goes from the Grand Prix and Osheaga music festival (at a new 65,000-seat natural amphitheatre from 2019, all going to plan), to cross-country skiing. In this city in search of a beach, there’s also a lakeside faux beach, Plage Jean-Doré, and another in the Old Port, Plage d’Horloge. After extensive research, I’ve concluded that this is the very best terrasse in Old Montreal. Here you can get an eyeful of the 19th-century NotreDame Basilica (see p. xxx) and 100-metre 1931 Art Deco Aldred Building. Look the other way, across the Saint Lawrence River: there’s Habitat 67, the striking modernist apartment complex reminiscent of precariously piled toy blocks. What more could you want? Perhaps the lobster rolls and some chilled rosé. From waffles for brunch to wagyu burger for dinner, plus summery cocktails, it’s all about indulgence. A fashionable party vibe builds in peak season, but prices aren’t over the top. Heaters and retractable awnings ward off unpleasant weather, though not enough to extend the season outside May to September. Then it’s time to try Hôtel Nelligan’s year-round wining and dining options downstairs, which may lack that bubbly alfresco mood, but October to April in Montreal is all about getting cosy. 10

Montreal’s fledgling craft cocktail scene took flight in 2016 when this basement bar opened in an old industrial cold storage room. A few joints with obscure entrances had already popped up around town, but this one took it to the next level with no signage and, until word got out, no known address. Adding to its audacity is the location, amid Old Montreal’s tourist traps. Here’s a bar that just wants the cocktail lovers. Entry is speakeasy-style. Although it’s on Rue Saint-Paul Est, press the buzzer by the unremarkable black door on the dogleg laneway corner of SaintAmable and Saint-Vincent streets (look for the little white duck icon), and hope there’s room while you wait. Good to go? Follow the gatekeeper down the stairs into this dimly lit 19th-century space of exposed red-brick walls and low wooden beams, refreshed with a contemporary lick. In this lifestyle store you’ll find objects often designed and made locally, like Tungstène’s handmade lamps and light fittings – industrial vintage that exudes 21st-century minimalist style. Did you know Québec produces three-quarters of the world’s maple syrup? That’s why souvenir shops here in the province’s biggest city have shelves and windows full of it, but for the guaranteed good stuff, and an array of other maple products, head to Délices Érable & Cie (Maple Delights & Co). It’s a retail store for the century-old Citadelle Maple Syrup Producers’ Cooperative, whose members tap sap from seven million maple trees and boil it down into unadulterated liquid gold. At this bright, sleek boutique-cafe, you can buy different grades, from the early season’s golden, delicately flavoured style, to late season’s dark, robust drop. There are functional bottles and beautiful bottles, including maple-leaf-shaped ones, and flasks with an elegant pewter maple-leaf decoration. Other temptations include maple popcorn, maple tea, maple butter, candy, sugar, nuts and dressings, plus treats to enjoy in-store, including maple icecream and cookies. Cranberry and honey products have been added lately, making the sweet shopping quandary harder. 7

have introduced contemporary glamour to this grande dame’s storied interior, especially in the wining and dining spaces with epic river views. Live it up for a while in the 1608 wine and cheese bar, or with a well crafted cocktail at Bistro Le Sam, which also does bar snacks and smart-casual fare like rich clam chowder. The main restaurant, Champlain, is baronial grandeur meets 21st-century chic with a menu of regional haute cuisine, from Gaspésie snow crab to Marieville foie gras. This is expensive special occasion territory, or get smart with the $42 treat-filled afternoon tea or $60 Sunday brunch. Reservations recommended. Between lack of time and Vieux Québec’s charms, most visitors don’t stray outside the wall. Yet just beyond are La Grand Allée’s gracious 19th‑century houses, which have been turned into the city’s most fashionable dining and nightlife strip. L’Atelier (624 Grande Allée Est, map XXX) is the place for classy cocktails with tapas, tartares and oyster shooters, or there’s more affordable fun at L’Inox (655 Grande Allée Est, map XXX), a brewpub with beer-friendly food including deluxe hot dogs. Two former working-class neighbourhoods also just beyond the fortifications, Saint-Jean-Baptiste and

Saint-Roch, have evolved into lively playtime districts. In slightly bohemian SaintJean-Baptiste, Le Sacrilège (447 Rue Saint-Jean, map XXX) is worth visiting just for their amusing sign. This restaurantbar has a relaxed, well-worn character, microbrews and pub food, which means good times on the streetside and rear courtyard terrasses, or the old church pews inside. Gourmet burger joint Chez Victor (145 Rue Saint-Jean, map XXX) is also a favourite with locals, including vegetarians overjoyed by the five burger options. In SaintRoch, where students and tech entrepreneurs hang, rusticchic French bistro Le Clocher Penché (203 Rue Saint-Joseph Est, map XXX) does decadent but good-value brunch plates. Le Croquembouche (225 Rue Saint-Joseph Est, map XXX), surely the best boulangeriepatisserie in town, has scrumptious cakes, pastries and baguette sandwiches, and brewpub La Barberie (310 Rue Saint-Roch, map XXX) is the neighbourhood’s top beer spot – try all eight on tap with the carousel sampler.

MONT TREMBLANT Just two hours by car or bus north of Montreal, the Laurentian mountains offer you a deep dive into nature, with picturesque towns scattered among forested peaks, rivers and thousands of lakes. Choose from almost every kind of good time in the great outdoors from summer hiking to downhill skiing at the region’s 12 resorts. The biggest of this outdoorsy dozen is Mont Tremblant (see p. XXX), which for years has been voted eastern North America’s best resort by Ski magazine readers. With its mansard roofs, gable windows, pretty colours and pristine paths, Mont Tremblant resort’s pedestrian village is a too-nice contemporary take on a Québec town, but from equipment rental to accommodation it aces convenience. Beyond winter sports, from late spring there are more outdoor activities than you can poke a stick at on and around the mountain. Would you prefer canoeing or white-water rafting? Go-karting or horse riding? The two golf courses are popular, as are the paved cycling paths, and trails for mountain and fat bikes. The Laurentian, or Laurentide, warm-weather grand finale is an endless, undulating sea of fiery autumn colour, which usually peaks around late September or early October. Seeing this natural wonder on a sunny day from the top of Mont Tremblant is a bucket-list experience. After the colour fades there’s a muddy off-peak season until a blanket of snow settles in November, then the mud returns during April and May.

Becky Ohlsen first visited Stockholm as a toddler, on a trip to meet her maternal grandparents. Later, as a teen, she mastered enough of the language and geography to make an important daily pilgrimage to the local snack kiosk for chocolate. Becky will still go out of her way for Swedish chocolate, but several stretches of living in Stockholm apartments over the years have expanded her tastes and interests. These days, she never misses a chance to revisit her favorite paintings at the Moderna Museet, tuck into a bowl of fish stew in the basement of Hötorgshallen food court, stop for a fika (coffee break) in an old-fashioned cafe, play some pinball in an underground billiards hall, or walk along the city’s many bridges and canals. Becky has researched and written about Stockholm for Lonely Planet since 2004; she wrote about family travel in Sweden for The Independent , and landscape as a character in Swedish literature for The Bear Deluxe. GAMLA STAN AND RIDDARHOLMEN It’s hard not to swoon over Stockholm’s Old Town, a tiny island crammed with saffron-and-spice-coloured medieval buildings sagging toward each other across narrow cobblestone streets. The city was founded here in 1252. It is home to the Royal Palace, the Nobel Museum, and Stockholm’s narrowest street. Stortorget (see p.XXX), the main square at the heart of the island, is lined with adorable cafes. Most visitors stick to three main streets: busy Stora Nygatan, pedestrianised Västerlånggatan and slightly quieter Österlånggatan, both of which originally ran just outside the city walls. Following the herd is fine, but it’s more fun to get happily lost – grab an exotic-sounding flavour of ice-cream from one of several cafes (black licorice, anyone?) and wander down any skinny alleyway that beckons, including the 90-centimetre wide Mårten Trotzigs gränd. You’ll quickly leave the souvenir shops behind, and with a little imagination you can pretend you’re time-traveling. (Don’t worry, though – the island is tiny, and walking in any direction will soon get you back to a main drag.)

Linked to Gamla Stan by bridge, the jewelbox islet of Riddarholmen (‘the Knights’ Island’), is home to Riddarholmskyrkan (see p.XXX), the city’s most striking church. The old town’s main square, Stortorget, is the neighborhood’s adorable cobblestone heart – sit at a cafe and just watch as there’s always something going on here, whether it’s a guy playing music on a saw or the annual Christmas market. History buffs know the square as the site of the Stockholm Bloodbath of November 1520. To squelch resistance by Swedes who wanted independence from the Kalmar Union and Danish rule, the newly crowned Danish king Christian II invited more than 80 Swedish nobles to the palace – and then had them hanged or beheaded in the square. (This is all much easier to picture if you’re here in November than it is in July.) As you might imagine, this did not win him or the Kalmar Union any new supporters. Quite the opposite: it sparked Sweden’s war for independence in earnest. Two years later the Kalmar Union was dissolved, and rebel leader Gustav Vasa was king. These days the square is peaceful and cheery, lined with cafes and coffee houses. The Nobel Museum, at the square’s north side, provides a primer on the history of the coveted prize. 14
POCKET TIP Tour de Lévis looks like a fort building but is actually a 1930 water tower – with unrivalled 360-degree views.
The Royal Armory, occupying the basement vaults of the royal palace, is the oldest museum in Sweden and full of fascinating artefacts. There’s a parade of royal costumes over the centuries (some of them still mud- and bloodspattered, commemorating valour or misfortune), a stash of weapons from Stockholm’s original Three Crowns palace (which burned down in 1697), and a beautiful collection of impossibly delicate, elaborately gilded coaches and carriages. But the popular favourite here is the stuffed horse Streiff, the steed that King Gustav II Adolf was riding when he was killed in the Battle of Lützen in 1632. The permanent collection has been expanded and the space renovated as of 2019. Admission is free to the main hall (there’s occasionally a charge for a temporary exhibit); the entrance is along the southeast wall of the palace at ground level.

Known for its ultra-soft handmade wooden brushes and beautiful textiles, this store – with a few locations around town – also stocks carefully chosen household goods and handicrafts of a uniformly high quality. Think sturdy wooden toys, kitchen gadgets that are too pretty to use, unbelievably soft towels and luxurious throw blankets. Nothing here is particularly cheap, but all of it is genuinely well-made. And there’s a bonus: Iris Hantverk works primarily with artisans and suppliers who are visually impaired. The company got its start with a half-dozen visually impaired craftsmen making one-of-a-kind wooden brushes in a traditional Swedish style, then gradually expanded its offerings over the years. With its soft lighting and meticulously organised blondewood shelves, the shop is a soothing, pleasant place even if you’re just browsing.
You need a throw pillow with a dachshund on it, and also a matching pencil case in the same material with a smaller version of the same dachshund. And also an eyeglasses case with a picture of eyeglasses woven into it, and a breakfast serving tray with half a hard-boiled egg on it, and a pot-holder in the shape of a fish. Hilda Hilda makes some of the most whimsical textiles and textile-based household goods, from tote bags and pillows to table runners and makeup cases, sold in this tiny shop where you can often see a craftsperson at work in the back room. This stuff is both totally original and quintessentially Swedish.

One of my favorite elements of the Stockholm skyline, the Riddarholm church’s castiron spire (visible from all over town) sticks up into what always seems like a cloudy sky, even when the sun is shining elsewhere in the city. Or maybe I just see it that way because I know what’s inside: this gloomy church is home to the royal crypt, where all the Swedish monarchs from medieval times to the 1950s ended up. (The one exception is lifelong non-conformist Queen Christina, buried in Rome at St Peter’s.) From June through August there are guided tours in English daily at 2.30pm; join one of these if you can, as it gets you into the crypts, where guides share gossipy stories about the occupants – including King Waldemar, son of historic Stockholm statesman Birger Jarl (both names are ubiquitous). Worn stone stairs lead to the vault, with its gold-starred ceiling over elaborately gilded and decorated coffins. The rest of the year, you mostly have to enjoy looking at Riddarholmskyrkan from the outside, as it’s rarely open in 18

This little shop, tucked away on a side street, provides the opposite experience to the usual souvenir shopping in Gamla Stan. There are no plastic Viking helmets, wooden-horse refrigerator magnets or blue-and-gold onesies here. The tiny space is done up in reclaimed and recycled materials, and artist Lena M is often behind the counter. Her simple but adorable designs on serving trays and dish towels make ideal gifts to take home: choose from beautiful motifs of fish, birds, moose, other animals or iconic Stockholm buildings. Not only are they unique, practical and very Swedish, but they weigh nothing and are easy to pack. Lena also creates beautiful paintings on recycled wood. You can be happy knowing you’re directly supporting a local artist.

2 ripe avocados
Halve the avocados, remove the stones and scoop the flesh out, putting it in a mixing bowl. Using a fork, mash the avocado, adding some lemon or lime juice, and season with salt and pepper to taste. Add the red onion and chilli. Just before serving, finish by garnishing with the pomegranate and sesame seeds, some extra cilantro/ coriander, and coarse or flaky salt.
1 tbsp fresh lime or lemon juice salt and freshly ground black pepper ½ red onion, peeled and diced (about ¼ cup/40 g) 1 jalapeño, serrano or other chilli, minced (optional) 2 tbsp finely chopped cilantro/coriander leaves, plus extra for garnish GARNISH
1 tbsp pomegranate seeds 1 tsp black sesame or toasted sesame seeds coarse pink Himalayan salt (or flaky sea salt), to taste
To prevent oxidation (browning), put the avocado stone in the middle of the guacamole. Acid also prevents oxidation, so feel free to add a thin layer of lemon or lime juice on top, folding this through just before serving. If you need to refrigerate your guac (up to 2 days), put it in a bowl that has a tight-fitting lid. Pack the guacamole tightly in the bowl, pressing out any air bubbles. Dribble in some lukewarm water, making sure that the water covers the surface of the guacamole to about ½ in (1 cm) deep. Put some plastic wrap directly over the guac, then put the lid on and refrigerate. When ready to eat, take the lid off and gently pour out the water. Stir the guacamole to incorporate any extra moisture. NOTES
• Do not over-mash your guacamole; leave it a bit chunky. It will have more texture and better taste. • Chillies vary individually in their hotness. Start with half of one, and taste. Be careful when handling chillies – wash your hands and do not rub your eyes! • If it is not pomegranate season, you can substitute tomatoes in the guacamole. De-seed them first, or the guacamole will be watery.

Singaporean laksa by Poh Ling Yeow INGREDIENTS
2 tablespoons laksa paste
300ml (1¼ cups) coconut milk
500ml (2 cups) chicken or vegetable stock
250g (½ pound) prawns, peeled and deveined, tails on 1 tablespoon lime juice
1 tablespoon fish sauce
In a heavy based saucepan, heat the laksa paste over medium heat for a minute or so until it is warmed through and fragrant. If your laksa paste is very thick or dry, add a few drops of peanut oil to help it along. Stir in a little of the coconut milk and blend well. Add the rest of the coconut milk and the stock, stirring to combine, and let it come up to a simmer.
1 tablespoon brown sugar
Measure in the lime juice, fish sauce and sugar, and stir through. Taste and adjust for balance (see note above).
1 bunch bok choy, roughly chopped
Add the prawns and, one minute later, the bok choy. They will cook almost immediately, and continue cooking after they are served.
50g (2 oz) packets vermicelli bean thread noodles
Drop a nest of bean thread noodles into the bottom of deep two bowls and ladle over the soup. Let it sit for two minutes before serving to let the noodles soften and garnish to your heart’s content. Serve with lime wedges.

INDIA One of only three nations to have lifted the ICC Cricket World Cup more than once, India boast a 50-over pedigree which befits one of the game’s undisputed superpowers. They opened their World Cup account back in 1983 with victory over the West Indies at Lord’s and became two-time champions in 2011 after despatching Sri Lanka on home soil in the final. INDIA’S LOVE AFFAIR with cricket is well documented. The country is obsessed with the sport and with the advent of the inaugural Cricket World Cup, staged in England in 1975, for the first time the nation’s finest had a genuinely global stage on which to express themselves. Surprisingly, however, the first two tournaments saw India struggle. Defeats in the group phase to England and New Zealand in the inaugural competition meant they failed to reach the knockout stages and they were condemned to another chastening early exit four years later after losing all three of their round robin fixtures.
THE COACH
Their initial efforts were far short of what their fanatical support demanded, but 1983 was the year India made amends, overcoming the West Indies in an attritional final at Lord’s to finally get their hands on the silverware. India posted a modest 183 all out in their innings, built chiefly on the 38 made by opener Krishnamachari Srikkanth, and although it was not a particularly intimidating total, the West Indies never threatened to chase it down and three wickets apiece from seamers Madan Lal and Mohinder Amarnath saw Clive Lloyd’s side knocked over for 140. Two semi-final appearances over the next four tournaments followed, but India yearned for another shot at the title. It came again in 2003 in South Africa when they faced Australia in the
RAVI SHASTRI The 55-year-old played 80 Tests and 150 ODIs for India between 1981 and 1992 and over the course of his international career transformed himself from a left-arm spinner into a batting all-rounder. He scored four 50-over centuries for his country, took 129 ODI wickets and featured in three World Cups for his country, including India’s triumphant campaign in England in 1983. Following retirement Shastri embarked on a broadcasting career, working on the IPL for the Board of Control for Cricket in India, but temporarily took charge of the Indian team for their 2007 tour of Bangladesh. In July 2017 he was handed the job of head coach on a permanent basis, succeeding former teammate Anil Kumble, on the recommendation of India’s Cricket Advisory Committee, comprising Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman and Sachin Tendulkar. 42

Only the legendary Sachin Tendulkar has made more ODI centuries than Virat Kohli but with many more years of international 50-over cricket ahead of him, the current Indian captain could yet eclipse the record of 49 tons set by his former team-mate. First capped in 2008 against Sri Lanka, the right-hander first registered three figures in ODI cricket the following year against the same opposition at Eden Gardens and, in 2012, he claimed the ICC ODI Player of the Year accolade. He succeeded MS Dhoni as India’s one-day captain in early 2017 and responded to the extra responsibility magnificently with six centuries in the calendar year, a feat which earned him his second ICC award. Kohli started 2018 in imperious form and soon collected another award, the player of the ODI series when India toured South Africa and won 5–1. He led the way scoring 558 runs, including three centuries, and amassed an incredible average of 186.

final but it was a match to forget from an Indian perspective. The Baggy Greens scored an imposing 359/2 first up and despite a run-a-ball 82 from opener Virender Sehwag, the scoreboard pressure proved too much for Sourav Ganguly’s team and they could muster only 234 in reply. Redemption for the loss came eight years later. Safely through to the knockout stages, India exacted their revenge by beating Australia in the quarter-finals and then despatched arch rivals Pakistan in a highly-charged last four encounter in Mohali. Sri Lanka were their opponents in the final at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The Lions batted first and made 274/6 from their 50 overs courtesy of an unbeaten 103 from the talismanic Mahela Jayawardene. India’s reply began disastrously when Sehwag was bowled second ball by Lasith Malinga but 97 from Gautam Gambhir steadied the ship before Man of the Match Mahendra Singh Dhoni, coming in at five, blasted an unbeaten 91 from 79 balls to steer his side to victory with 10 balls remaining. The Indians were semi-finalists in 2015 and with the 12th edition of the tournament in 2019 almost upon us, cricket’s most passionate nation will be again be a team with high hopes and lofty ambitions.
