Features a bold female protagonist and vivid, immersive world-building Covers such issues as female and male roles in society, grief and changing relationships, making it ideal for classroom discussion Praise for book one in the Narroway Trilogy, Ottilie Colter and the Narroway Hunt; 'Right from the first few pages I was hooked. The fantasy world is beautifully created, possibly dangerous and yet intriguing. The monsters in the Narroway are truly impressive and dangerous. I marvel at the imagination of Rhiannon Williams to create such creatures. I give this a resounding ten out of ten.' Review by momotimetoread.blogspot.com 'Filled with gruesome monsters, fantastical beasts and life or death challenges, this book's uniqueness is thrilling. Kids are going to love the mysteries and intrigue, and they will be HUGE fans of the action and adventure that never ever stops. Rhiannon Williams is a master of words, and this amazing new series is one to grab onto now.' Review by www.kids-bookreview.com

Praise for book one in The Narroway Trilogy: ‘A wonderfully imaginative world with lovable characters, Williams spins a tale that captures and provokes curiosity. From the brave Ottilie - who is forced to disguise herself as a boy so that she can rescue her younger brother - to the band of boys (and girls) she meets along the way, the world is rich, layered and well thought out. I can't wait for the next book in the trilogy. I have a sense that the world is about to get a whole lot bigger. Perfect for kids aged 8+ (as well as the young at heart who love a good adventure novel).’ – Emma ‘Ottilie Colter and the Narroway Hunt is a high fantasy novel in the same vein as the popular Ranger’s Apprentice series and I believe that this series will also be very popular. Ottilie, her brother Gully and their new friends are an impressive group of heroes and this is the start of a great new series suitable for 8+.’ – Pauline ‘Such a fun read! Full of adventure, mystery and a rambunctious cast of characters, Ottilie Colter tells the story of one girl's fight to save her younger brother when he's kidnapped by a secret order of male monster hunters, tasked with saving the world before they turn 18. Ottilie is my favourite kind of character, she’s anxious and scared and afraid of doing the wrong thing but when push comes to shove she'll be brave despite how scared she is. More than that this is a story that challenges fantasy tropes and makes readers ask questions, like why are men the only ones allowed to fight monsters? Why do women only belong in the kitchen or laundry? The perfect read for fantasy lovers of all ages - I can't wait for book 2!’ – Emily

One day, Winnie-the-Pooh was playing with Piglet and Roo when Kanga arrived to take Roo home for his nap. She tucked a worn out Roo into her pouch and bounded away with a wave and a big smile. ‘Mothers are pretty special, don’t you think?’ asked Pooh. Piglet nodded vigorously, because anything Pooh said was bound to be right. ‘Very true, Pooh.’ He was silent for a moment before asking, ‘But what exactly is a mother?’ ‘Well,’ said Pooh, ‘Mothers are someone like Kanga. Mums are…’

An ABC of Treasures

Ms. Marion Frith

A glorious smorgasbord of colour, size and texture, An ABC of Treasures collects a variety of vintage, retro and contemporary objects for young readers to pore over and treasure. Always drawn to little things that are usually of little value to others, Marion Firth has fossicked about in op-shops and garage sales all over the world in her quest for the ultimate miniature collection. "I have always noticed the attention children pay to objects that adults often dismiss as tasteless plastic junk, or old tat. They love that cow that their parent is paying no heed to. They see her face. They look carefully at the patten on her back. They find her grass to eat. I guess I wanted to honour that in some way." Key Information Publication

Sonny Day and Biddy Maroney are Australian illustrators, designers and artists operating a small design studio (WBYK). Their work is a conversation between two individuals played out in colour, shape, texture and drawing from their shared influences comic books, skateboarding, music and film. Sonny and Biddy worked and exhibited individually when they met in 2001. They began combining their talents in 2006, creating screen-printed posters for Popfrenzy tours on their living room floor, and have been working as a team ever since. Today they work for clients big and small around the world. Since 2012 they have created many sold-out licensed film posters for Cinema Pop-culture powerhouse Mondo, including two solo exhibitions in the company's Austin Texas gallery. They've also had solo exhibitions in Monster Children, Mart and MTV Galleries in Sydney and Lamington Drive in Melbourne, as well as contributing to many group exhibitions across the globe. Sonny conducts kids (and occasionally adult) workshops, designing and painting skateboard graphics. He is also commissioned regularly to paint murals and exhibits in solo mode as often as he can.

Let’s start at the very beginning . . . dinosaurs began their lives as eggs! And those eggs came in different shapes, sizes and colours, just like these LIFESIZE dinosaur eggs . . .

WOW! This LIFESIZE Beibeilong egg is the largest known dinosaur egg EVER.

This LIFESIZE Deinonychus egg is hatching – awwwww, how cute! But not for long, as this little dino grew up into a deadly predator! Quite possibly the smallest dinosaur egg is this LIFESIZE Massospondylus egg. But Massospondylus wasn’t the smallest dinosaur ever – see how big it grew at the back of this book! This LIFESIZE Diplodocus egg would have been laid in the forest and then covered with earth and leaves. Once the baby hatched, it would push up through the earth and have to fend for itself straight away.

Here is a LIFESIZE Maiasaura egg – the baby dino inside was up to 30 centimetres long and curled up into a tight ball to fit inside the egg.

20 LIFESIZE books

Wow! We’ve travelled back in time to see some amazing LIFESIZE dinosaurs and prehistoric creatures. Let’s see how they compare in size to one another. And then measure yourself using the book to find out how you compare.

Pteranodon (TEH-ran-oh-don) Wingspan: up to 6 metres Did you know? Pteranodon had a beautiful head crest that kept its head balanced and helped it steer when flying.

Diplodocus (dip-LOD-er-cus) Head to tail: up to 25 metres Did you know? Diplodocus never stopped growing throughout its whole life! 83 LIFESIZE books

Allosaurus (al-oh-SORE-us) Head to tail: up to 8.5 metres Did you know? An Allosaurus head was so big and heavy that if it hadn’t had such a big tail it would have just fallen over!

Stegosaurus (steg-oh-SORE-us) Head to tail: up to 9 metres Did you know? Stegosaurus means ‘roof lizard’. 30 LIFESIZE books LifeSizeDino_68532_INS.indd 28

Early Humans Our early human relatives appeared around the start of the Pleistocene epoch, and lived alongside the prehistoric animals in this book. Though conditions would have been harsh, early humans adapted, survived, evolved and spread. As the last glaciers began to melt about 15,000 years ago, people could venture into the previously deep-frozen lands of the far north.

The Mega Meltdown We know about these animals because of the mega meltdown that followed the Ice Age. Fossilised bones and even complete animals locked in ice, with their skin, fur and blood preserved, have allowed scientists to re-imagine the prehistoric animal world.

10

Around 2.6 million years ago our planet began to change. Earth’s temperature cooled, freezing the oceans and forming vast ice sheets over land, especially in the north. For the next 2.5 million years glaciers came and went in a series of ice ages. This long period of time is known as the Pleistocene epoch, or the ‘Ice Age’, and the creatures that roamed the land, swam in the oceans and soared in the air were truly enormous, weird and wonderful.

Changing Lands With so much water frozen in glaciers and ice sheets, sea levels dropped, revealing bridges of land between continents such as North America and Asia. Both animals and humans travelled across these bridges, spreading into new territories. As the ice melted and sea levels rose, these routes were hidden again.

Supersized Animals The supersized animals that lived in the Ice Age are known as Pleistocene megafauna (mega = large, fauna = animals). Beavers were bear-sized, giant sloths fought off sabre-tooth cats, huge birds filled the skies and hulking mammoths roamed the land. Reptile Giants There were plenty of reptiles that lived alongside giant ripper lizards during the Ice Age. These included the 6-metre-long crocodile, Quinkana, giant snakes that lurked in watering holes and strangelooking turtles with horns and spiked tails, much like glyptodonts.

MARSUPIAL LION These prehistoric predators were not actually lions – they belonged to a family of carnivorous marsupials called Thylacoleonidae and were more closely related to koalas than big cats. Some were squirrel-sized, but the biggest was the marsupial lion, Thylacoleo. It measured around 1.5 metres from head to tail and weighed up to 160 kilograms, heavier than a jaguar! With retractable claws, opposable thumbs and specialised teeth, marsupial lions were hypercarnivores, preying on enormous Australian Ice Age mammals.

Rare Remains Megalania prisca bones are extremely rare finds. Vertebrae, single teeth, lower jaws and limb bones have been dug up, but scientists are yet to discover a complete skeleton, meaning there is still a lot we don’t know. From dating the bones, scientists estimate giant ripper lizards became extinct about 50,000 to 40,000 years ago, as the climate changed and the animals they ate began to disappear.

Tough Love These top carnivores were expert climbers but probably hunted mainly on the ground. Like most big cats today, they were most likely solitary animals. When a female marsupial lion had young she resided in a cave, sheltering her joeys from predators and teaching them how to climb on the rock faces. Like other marsupials, she had a pouch to carry and nurture her joeys. As the joeys became able to fend for themselves, it’s possible the mother chased them away. This meant she could find another mate and have more young.

Without a Home So, why would such an impressive predator go extinct? Unlike northern parts of the world, during the Ice Age Australia was minimally affected by the massive spreading glaciers and then the ma jor meltdown. However, it was affected by climate change as conditions became warmer, more varied, and generally drier. Also, the newly arrived humans could have preyed upon the animals that marsupial lions ate. The introduction of fire-stick farming would have been another factor. Unable to feed or find a home, these fierce predators were on the way to extinction by about 40,000 years ago.

The Biggest Bite Despite Thylacoleo’s modest size in comparison to other megafauna alive at the time, scientific studies have shown us that it had one of the strongest bites of any mammal, living or extinct. This meant it could have taken down prey much larger than itself, including giant wombats. A marsupial lion’s teeth were highly specialised too, with huge incisors and unusually long back teeth, ideal for slicing meat. Some scientists think these carnivores were ambush hunters, stalking prey from hiding places such as overhanging branches, then striking with speed and killing their unfortunate victims.

Lost World : Giants F

ossil discoveries have revealed an amazing world of extinct megafauna – enormous versions of creatures that live today. Imagine beavers the size of bears, sloths as large as elephants and armadillos as big as a car. Many of these creatures lived alongside early humans and their cousins, and may have either hunted them or been hunted by them. Most megafauna species died out due to dramatic climate changes around the end of the last Ice Age 11,700 years ago.

or hundreds of years people have told tales of colossal sea creatures that could tear apart ships and drag sailors to a watery grave. Step back in time millions of years and the oceans were home to real live monsters – fearsome predatory whales, giant crocodiles and mega-toothed sharks whose bite was more powerful than that of a T-rex. The largest animal ever to have lived – the blue whale – still lives in our oceans today. Despite its size, it is harmless to humans and lives on a diet of tiny crustaceans.

Seedlings peep out from the ground and, once the flowers bloom, a kaleidoscope of colour comes to end the winter’s gloom.

From tiny seeds Plants like trees and flowers begin life as a seed. An oak tree was an acorn, a pod becomes milkweed.

This flower is commonly known as the cornflower becasue it grows in cornfields. The bright blue blossoms have been used in traditional herbal medicines, inks and dyes.

One poppy plant can produce between 10,000 and 60,000 seeds. Each flower produces 4–6 petals, which are crumpled at first but flatten over time.

When a seed is planted deep inside the earth, a shoot or stem will soon appear to mark its place of birth...

Bees collect sugary nectar from flowers in order to make honey. By travelling from plant to plant, pollen sticks to the bee’s legs and body and allows flowers to create more seeds.

The oxeye daisy can be found in many grassy areas. Its large round flower head is bright white and appears to ‘glow’ at dusk. Because of this, it is sometimes called a moon daisy or moonpenny.

The beach tides ebb and flow as light moves from east to west. Sand shifts throughout the day as crabs pause to take rest.

Light and life From the vast horizon climbs the early-morning Sun, a blinding light announcing that the new day has begun. The rays of light grow stronger and the sunbeams kiss the shore. The morning air grows warmer as the Sun begins to soar...

The Sun is an enormous star situated at the centre of our universe. Despite being the fourth furthest planet from the Sun, it takes around eight minutes for sunlight to reach the Earth’s surface.

Most beaches are found on the coast. They are often covered in sand (a mixture of very small pieces of different rocks or minerals). The colour of sand is determined by what type of rock it is made from.

Hermit crabs use abandoned shells, typically old sea-snail shells, to protect their soft bodies from predators. When a hermit crab outgrows a shell, it will find a larger one to move into.

Seashells are made from the hard outer layer (the exoskeleton) of sea creatures, such as clams, oysters or sea-snails. Seashells come in all shapes, colours and sizes.
