About the Author/ Illustrator
SALLY RIPPIN Sally Rippin was born in Darwin, but grew up mainly in South-East Asia. She is the successful author and illustrator of over 50 published children’s books; many of them award winning, including two novels for young adults. She aims to write stories with heart. Her most recent books include the best-selling Billie B Brown early-reader series and its recent spin-offs, A Billie B Mystery, Billie’s Adventures and Hey Jack! series. These are quality stories with characters that have struck a chord with children, their parents, teachers and librarians alike, and has gone on to cement Sally’s place as one of Australia’s highest selling and most celebrated authors. Sally’s junior-fiction series Polly and Buster is very close to her heart as it’s a story she’s wanted to write for some time. As a bonus to fans, Sally – who spent three years studying fine art in China as a young adult – has stunningly illustrated Polly and Buster herself!

The Maestro walked in to the famed Chanel show, never knowing that she had two small friends in tow.

There was glitz, there was glam, people dressed with such passion. It was weird, it was wild, but darrrrling, that’s fashion!
Monsieur raised a brow. ‘If I know that brat we’ll soon hear her screaming – I am sure of that.’

Alien Archive Star Wars
Deep in the stacks of the Graf Archive, an old traveller's journal has been discovered and restored for public viewing. A long time ago this unknown traveller documented his stories about the many creatures found in each destination he explored, and includes famous movie locations such as the Mos Eisley cantina on Tatooine, Maz's Castle and the holy city of Jedha. The archivist restored this journal and added facts and stats about the cultures, legends and famous members of over 200 species, including famous characters such as Chewbacca, Ahsoka, Wicket and many more.

TOYDARIAN
TOYDARIAN
KALLERAN
I stopped to watch a podrace and took out a little bet with the winged bookmaker – he was a bit illtempered but a savvy businessman.
HOMEWORLD: TOYDARIA
K ALLERAN HOMEWORLD: KALLER
T
hese winged, long-snouted creatures are known around the galaxy for their shrewd business sense, often making their living as merchants in bustling industrial hubs. The Toydarians have a reputation for being bad-tempered and miserly, but many possess a strong sense of pride in their work. They are one of the few species who can resist mental manipulation by users of the Force.
Kallerans are tall humanoids with aquatic features. Kaller was occupied by the Confederacy of Independent Systems, and the Kallerans were forced to provide workers and supplies. The Galactic Republic forces eventually defeated the Separatists and took control of Kaller, but many of the species could not see much of a difference.
CULTURE Toydaria is covered in swamps and forests and its Royal City is perched on a mountain peak. The Toydarians live together in clans and make their homes in mud nests. Their wings enable them to fly almost anywhere, and the lack of vehicles on Toydaria allows them to take to the skies in relative safety. As a species they like to remain impartial in political matters, governed by a monarchy that liked to stay neutral during galactic disputes. During the Clone Wars, King Katuunko eventually agreed to side with the Republic after seeing the suffering caused by the conflict, but he was killed soon after for his choice.
LANAI
L ANAI
Kallerans live on a world constantly occupied by enemy forces. Each one I have met has been resigned to their fate – I am not sure they know which side they are on in any given war.
HOMEWORLD: AHCH-TO
Toydarian clan bell .
Watto is a cheat – his chance cubes are loaded!
TOYDARIANS IN THE GALAXY Watto, a Toydarian junk dealer, started his life as a soldier, but an injury forced him to seek out a new career. Arriving on Tatooine, he observed Jawas selling their used goods and decided to open his own shop in Mos Espa. He won two slaves from a Hutt in a bet, one of whom was Anakin Skywalker. Watto, a keen gambler, used Anakin’s natural podracing abilities to his financial advantage, but eventually lost his prize slave to Jedi Knight Qui-Gon Jinn in a wager on the Boonta Eve Classic.
26
The females of the Lanai species are known as ‘the Caretakers’ and are devoted to maintaining the sacred structures which dot the island home of the first Jedi temple. The males, known as ‘Visitors’, spend most of their time at sea, returning on a monthly basis with their catch. Their return is met with a celebration of dancing and music, which lasts for several days. Lanais lived harmoniously with Jedi Master Luke Skywalker, who sought refuge on Ahch-To after his quest to restore the Jedi Order failed. When Rey arrived to find Skywalker, she irritated the Lanais by being careless with the ancient landscape. While practising her Force skills, she blew a hole in her hut and dropped a pillar on a Caretaker’s wheelbarrow.
I heard stories of an aquatic planet tended to by an intelligent, peaceful race of grey creatures. It is rumoured that these creatures – the Lanai – have lived on the sacred island for thousands of years.

JAWA
JAWA
Up ahead I saw a large vehicle rolling over the dunes, pulling to a halt in front of some moisture farms. The front of the vehicle opened up like a drawbridge, revealing several small creatures in dark cloaks. They proceeded to unload many droids, ship parts and other scrap and I moved in for a closer look.
HOMEWORLD: TATOOINE
J
awas are about a metre tall, shrouded in heavy brown cloaks, and speak in a language understood by very few other species. Fewer still know what is beneath Jawa cloaks, so an air of mystery surrounds these odd creatures to this day.
CULTURE
TOOLS
Jawas spend their days combing the desert dunes for droids, ship parts and scrap to sell on to the locals and visiting merchants. They make a good living refurbishing what they find and haggling with moisture farmers, but have a reputation for being swindlers. They are often caught out selling dangerous equipment and faulty droids, but as there aren’t many retail options in the desert wasteland they usually still make the sale.
The Jawas have many tools for capturing and fixing droids. Once the Jawas have a droid in their possession they fit it with restraining bolts. They can then summon it using a Jawa droid caller. Their sandcrawlers are equipped with magnetic cranes perfect for collecting scrap from the desert floor and a suction tube that transports droids and parts to the cargo hold.
TRANSPORT Sandcrawlers were originally used for mining on Tatooine, but now abandoned, Jawas use them for transporting their wares across the desert as well as for a mobile headquarters. These moving fortresses provide protection from the harsh climate and terrain, and their armour is strong enough to sustain attacks from many of the Jawas’ adversaries.
Jawas native language, Jawaese, uses scent as well as spoken word to convey meaning, making it almost impossible to understand by outsiders. To allow them to continue their trade, Jawas communicate with their customers using a simplified version called Jawa Trade Talk.
Cargo holds, workshops and living spaces, all large enough for an entire Jawa clan.
Mechanical wheels and treads – more durable than common repulsor-powered engines.

KRAYT DRAGON
SARLACC
K RAYT DRAGON
HOMEWORLD: TATOOINE
HOMEWORLD: TATOOINE
S
arlaccs are terrifying carnivorous beasts with giant tentacle-like appendages, massive mouths and spear-like teeth. They live buried in the sand, feeding on any unlucky creatures that fall into their mouths. With an average length of 100 metres and several stomachs, sarlaccs can swallow even the largest prey whole.
FEEDING
SARLACCS IN THE GALAXY
Once sarlaccs reach maturity after 30,000 years, they burrow themselves 100 metres below the sand. Their mouths remain closest to the surface ready to devour their prey, while their most vital organs are protected beneath from other predators, such as the krayt dragon. The sarlaccs’ tentacles are lightning-fast allowing them to reach out and capture smaller prey, and they can also release an odour that attracts nearby herbivores to the pit.
Due to its proximity to Jabba the Hutt’s palace, the sarlacc in the Dune Sea is one of the crime lord’s favourite pets. Unlike younger sarlaccs, who can move about to capture their food, this sarlacc stays in the same pit and awaits its prey. Jabba, using this convenient situation to his advantage, provides plenty of food in the form of his enemies. It is in the ideal spot for an execution, and Jabba and his guests happily travel to the pit to watch the event.
Known for their ferocity, and with an average length of 5 metres, krayt dragons are the apex predators of the desert. However, despite their frightening size, krayt dragons are hunted ruthlessly for the highly valuable pearls they produce. Sand People and Jawas who conquer such beasts are held in high regard by their people.
MASSIFF
M ASSIFF HOMEWORLD: TATOOINE AND GEONOSIS These four legged, canine-like creatures native to desert worlds are often domesticated for various purposes. Desert-dwelling races, such as the Tusken Raiders, are fond of using them for sentry and guard tasks. Their large yellow eyes give them good night vision, making it easier to spot approaching enemies, while the spines along their humped backs provide an extra level of defence. Clone troopers have also been known to employ the creatures as trackers.

Perhaps whatever species Yoda belongs to is naturally strong with the Force. Both he and Yaddle are greatly revered here in the Jedi Temple.
oda, one of the greatest-known Jedi, was a member of a mysterious species with no known name or home planet. Information is hard to come by due to their ancient and secretive nature. Yaddle, a fellow Jedi Master, was the only other known member of this species. Yoda was strong with the light side of the Force and trained many generations of Jedi.
JEDI MASTER Despite his small size and aged appearance, Yoda was extremely proficient in many Jedi powers. He could jump many feet into the air, move heavy objects with his mind, sense disturbances from miles away and also deflect other Force powers directed against him. He was considered to be one of the most skilled users of the lightsaber in the whole Order, being quick, agile and fearless in combat.
Yaddle is known for being very kind and quiet, but on the other hand possesses some of the deadliest Force powers. Yoda spent his exile on the swamp planet Dagobah. It was here he met Anakin’s son, Luke, who became Yoda’s final trainee. Yoda taught Luke the ways of the Force, and encouraged him to reject the dark side. Luke was present at Yoda’s death, where the Master told the young Jedi that his training was complete.
Yoda was born nearly 900 years before the Battle of Yavin and died not long after. His extremely long life had an impact on many Galactic events. Rising to the highest position in the Order, this Grand Master oversaw the Jedi High Council and was relied on for his great wisdom and experience. He taught Jedi younglings lightsaber skills and decided who should be let into the Order.
But death was not the end for Yoda. He learned from the spirit of Qui-Gon Jinn that it was possible for a Jedi’s essence to survive beyond death if they completed a secret course of training. Yoda’s Force ghost appeared to Luke Skywalker many times, including when he set him on the right course when he was conflicted about the future of the Jedi. .
During the era of the Republic, Yoda reluctantly allowed a young boy named Anakin Skywalker to be trained as a Padawan by Jedi Knight, Obi-Wan Kenobi. Anakin grew up to be a great knight, but was seduced to the dark side of the Force. He became one of the most dangerous Sith Lords of all time, Darth Vader. When Vader’s new Master Darth Sidious ordered the death of all Jedi, Yoda was forced to flee.
Although I was not allowed in the council chamber, a young Padawan hoping to become a Jedi Knight told me all about the ring of chairs filled with the greatest Jedi alive ...

About the Author/ Illustrator
JEDDA ROBAARD Jedda Robaard is a children’s book illustrator and author whose work is well known here, in Australia, and internationally, having been published in many languages, including English, French, Dutch, Greek, Italian, Korean and Chinese. Jedda grew up in a small town on the island of Tasmania, Australia. She now lives on the coast of Victoria, Australia, with her husband, two daughters and a son, a nervous dachshund, a naughty border collie, a couple of cats, a few chickens, and a rather bitty cockatiel. Book illustration is an opportunity for Jedda to create little worlds where characters can play, unhindered by society’s restrictions. Jedda says, referring to the style of her art “The majority of my illustrations have been created simply with pencil and watercolour. They are just puddles of colour if you like. Puddles manipulated into tiny beings with feelings, obligations and agendas”. Jedda studied graphic design and, with the inspiration of Australian artists May Gibbs, Bob Graham, Jeannie Baker, Julie Vivas, Shaun Tan and Robert Ingpen, is now fulfilling her dream of becoming a children’s book illustrator.

Fox jumped.
‘Run!’ said Bird.
Fox ran.
‘Swim!’ said Bird.
Fox swam.
The water was cold.
But Bird was not impressed. Too high.
Too slow.
Too foxy.
So Fox tried harder.

Ra i n Some countries are much wetter than others. It depends on the amount of moisture in the air. Areas close to the sea tend to be rainier.
Cl o ud s As warm air containing water vapour rises and hits colder temperatures it condenses. This means that the air changes from a gas to a liquid. When the air condenses it turns into tiny water droplets that cling together and become clouds!
What is rain? Rain is the water that falls from the clouds when they can’t hold any more moisture. Try breathing out on a cold window and watch as your breath turns to water vapour on the glass. Imagine the glass is a cloud. If you keep breathing on it, the water vapour will build up and eventually small droplets will roll down, just like rain!
Fog is simply very low-lying cloud. It appears when the ground has been warmed by the Sun during the day and then cooled down quickly at night. M is t
i s a l i g h te r f o r m o f f o g .
Have you noticed that your breath is visible on a cold day? Breath contains water vapour which condenses in cold air. You are making your own tiny cloud!
There is a limited amount of water on Earth and it has been recycled since the very beginning of time. Next time you pour a glass of water, think about the fact that the water coming out of the tap is as old as Earth – that’s 4.5 billion years old!
Why isn’t rain salty? Salt from the sea doesn’t evaporate, so only pure water becomes the vapour that is transported into the water cycle. Evaporation The Sun heats up the water in oceans, rivers and lakes. When it gets warm enough, the water becomes vapour and rises into the air.
Rainbows appear when sunlight shines through water droplets in the air. Usually, we see light as white, but it actually contains many more colours. When a beam of light hits a raindrop, its colours separate and we see seven of them. Condensation As the vapour rises it gets colder and turns back into a liquid to form clouds.
Extreme Ra i n
Cl i mate In some places rain may fall at any time, in others there are wet and dry seasons. Farmers in India wait for the monsoon wind which brings heavy rain in May and June.
Flash flooding happens when lots of rain falls and the ground and rivers can’t hold all the water.
Acid rain falls when air pollution invades raindrops.
Mudslides can happen when hillsides are soaked by heavy rain. The wet ground slides over dry earth below, moving like a river and sweeping away everything in its path.
Why is rain so important? 97% of Earth’s water is salty – unusable for land-based animals and plants. The water cycle ensures that fresh water will fall on land. Rain feeds plants, and fills rivers and lakes where animals can drink.
Where does it go? Most rain flows back into the oceans, but some ends up as groundwater. This means that it seeps into the ground and eventually bubbles out again through springs. A lot of the water that we drink comes from groundwater.
Sn o w a nd Ice 10% of our planet is covered with snow and ice. Snowy weather can be great fun for sledging, snowball fights and skiing, but it is also crucial for keeping Earth at the right temperature.
What is snow? Snow forms when the atmospheric temperature is below freezing and there is moisture in the air. The water vapour that would otherwise fall as rain freezes into crystals. As these ice crystals grow, they become heavier, and eventually fall from the cloud as snowflakes.
Ty pes o f Sn o w a nd Ice
Icebergs are formed when parts of other icebergs or ice shelves (floating platforms of ice attached to land) break off. They are made of freshwater ice and they float. The biggest iceberg ever recorded was 11,000km2 (4,200mi2) – larger than Jamaica!
Sea ice is found in Arctic and Antarctic regions. Its bright surface reflects a lot of sunlight back into space, helping to keep Earth’s temperature stable. Sea ice covers an area twice the size of The Lambert Glacier in Antarctica is the longest Canada!
in the world. It is around 435km (270mi) long!
Hailstones are frozen raindrops. They get tossed around by the wind in clouds, gathering ice until they become heavy enough to fall.
Co ld Co rn ers
Sleet forms if snowflakes begin to melt as they fall from the clouds. It feels like icy rain or slushy snow!
Ice caps form when fallen snow builds up over many years into a permanent, thick covering of ice. On sloping ground, glaciers may form as slowmoving ‘rivers’ of ice. Ice caps and glaciers currently hold most of the world’s fresh water.
Ice crystals clump together when they fall through moist air. This creates big, fluffy flakes – perfect for building snowmen!
e ever recorded atur r e The lowest temp Antarctica. F), in ° 7 . 5 was -93.2°C (-13
Some places never experience ice or snow, but in others, like Antarctica and some of the Arctic, it stays cold enough for snow all year round. These places are colder because they receive less direct sunlight than the parts nearer to the equator.
Arctic Equator

Powder snow forms when flakes fall through very dry air. The flakes stay separated, making ideal snow for winter sports!
An avalanche is a large amount of snow that suddenly slips downhill. Avalanches can be caused by fresh snow falling on an icy surface, earth tremors, or even skiers moving over loose snow. They can reach speeds of 320kph (200mph).
A blizzard is an extreme snowstorm. For conditions to be considered this severe, there must be huge amounts of snow, winds above 56kph (35mph) and very poor visibility – less than 0.5km (0.25mi).
How does lightning occur? When water and ice particles collide inside clouds they create electrical charges. Positive charges float up and negative charges move down. Eventually, so much energy builds up that the negative charges escape. As they move through the air, they search for positive charges to connect with. Each connection produces a massive spark and flash of light. This is lightning.
Did you know that thunder is just the sound effect of lightning? When lightning rips through the atmosphere it produces vibrations, which travel as sound waves. These sound waves reach us as the loud rumbles that we know as thunder.

Li g htn i n g Fo rks Negative charges search for positive charges to connect with. They can only sense charges up to 50m (164ft) away, and so branch out blindly through the air in jagged bursts, creating those sudden forks of light.
Mythology The Ancient Greeks believed that lightning was the weapon of Zeus (the king of the gods). If something was struck by lightning it was regarded as sacred.
Static shocks Dragging your feet can create an electrical charge. It is released when you touch a conductor (like a door handle), and might give you a tiny static shock. The same thing happens on a bigger scale when lightning forms!
Count the storm in You can work out how many miles away a storm is by counting the seconds between the lightning and thunder and dividing the number by five. Ten seconds would mean the storm was two miles (3.2km) away.

I dress in a rush and don’t even have time to make my bed but I manage a few mouthfuls of toast and do one of the quickest toothbrushes in history. And I make sure I wrap up the present I made for Lenka last night.
3
I tear down the street towards Lenka’s house. Like I said, it starts like any other day.
“Have a great day, Lula!” Mum yells as I hurtle through the front door.
“Byeeeeeee!” I shout back. The door slams behind me. I have the feeling I’ve forgotten something although I’m in too much of a hurry to figure out what it is. 4
5
There might be another version of us going around – a Lula and Lenka that stayed just the same:
best
friends
forever. 12
13
Lenka prefers bare trees – she says she likes the shape of the branches with no leaves on them. But I like trees green and shady . It’s never mattered though – us being different – because…
24
25
“The school’s pencils aren’t in the right colours …” Lenka says, still staring out of the window. “Maybe someone else has ones you could borrow,” I suggest. I hold out the present towards her. It was the whole reason why I needed to borrow her pencils.
“Look, why don’t you open your present? I made it for you last night.” I can’t help but glance over. It’s wrapped in Lula’s usual style – a piece of wrapping paper that isn’t quite big enough with newspaper covering the rest.

lma reached up. Just a little further and she would be high enough to see for miles.
“What were you doing?” her uncle asked, taking Alma’s arm and leading her back to their cottage. “I just wanted to see the forest,” Alma said.
4
Alma had lived with her stern uncle ever since she could remember. But deep down she never felt she belonged in the narrow town where they lived. She wasn’t sure where she did belong. Only that there had to be more to the world than this. Her uncle shook his head. “How many times must I tell you?” he huffed. “The forest is full of fearsome beasts. That’s why only the hunters are allowed there.”
5
The forest air was cool. The dancing trees were silver. Moonlight dappled the ground like pearls scattered from a string. There were flowers with a thousand petals that smelled of juicy plums. Yellow lizards slept in the trees.
Deeper and deeper Alma walked. Birds sang carols all around her. Their songs made her feel welcome.
The bear cub lapped up the cream. The berries stained his white star purple. He licked Alma’s hand to say “thank you”. “You’re welcome,” Alma said, giggling. “I should give you a name, too. How about Star Bear? What do you think?” In her arms, the cub snored in agreement. He had fallen fast asleep. * Every morning, Alma brought Star Bear milk and whatever she could sneak away from her uncle’s table. While Alma was at school, the bear slept in the shed. Every night when the moon rose, they slipped into the forest to explore.

SPOTTED MORAY EEL
BLUECHEEK BUTTERFLYFISH
(Gymnothorax moringa)
(Chaetodon semilarvatus)
Rocky surfaces with hidden crevices are the ideal locations for this snake-like creature to hide in. Solitary hunters, the spotted moray eel has poor eyesight but an excellent sense of smell and a lethal bite.
PINK DORID NUDIBRANCH
VIOLET SPOTTED REEF LOBSTER
(Chromodoris bullocki)
(Enoplometopus debelius)
Nudibranches are among some of the most stunning species of sea slug in the world. Their vivid colours and textures have developed to blend in with their coral reef surroundings.
This little reef lobster only grows to about 15 cm. It lives in warm, tropical oceans near rocky surfaces and comes out to hunt at night. It’s beautifully patterned shell means it is often captured and sold to aquariums around the world.
A common sight on the coral reef, this striking fish mates with one partner for life, and as such can often be found swimming in a pair. Its tiny snout is perfect for nibbling at coral polyps and eating small worms.
LEAFY SEA DRAGON
(Phycodurus eques) This clever seahorse looks just like seaweed and is perfectly suited to the kelp forests in which it lives. The male leafy sea dragon looks after the babies, known as fry, until they hatch.
RED SPOTTED CORAL CRAB
(Trapezia tigrina) Don’t be fooled by those brightly coloured polka dots. These feisty crustaceans fiercely guard their coral reef homes.
KORAN ANGELFISH
(Pomacanthus semicirculatus) This flat-bodied fish feeds on algae and sponges. As it grows into an adult, the patterns on it’s body become a light, yellowish green, edged with vibrant electric blue.
GREATER BLUE-RINGED OCTOPUS
(Hapalochlaena lunulata) The stunning patterns on this tiny octopus warn predators to stay away – it is highly venomous. It lives in burrows on the ocean floor, which it only leaves at night to search for food.
ORANGE SEASTAR
OCELLARIS CLOWNFISH
(Ophidiaster confertus)
(Amphiprion ocellaris)
With arms covered in suckers, this starfish creeps along the ocean floor, attaching itself to rocks and coral in the hope of catching a passing meal.
These little fish can only be found on coral reefs. They build homes inside sea anemones, which are embedded to the coral reef.
The Night Flower Lara Hawthorne

In the Swamp by the Light of the Moon Frann Preston-Gannon
A little frog is singing to himself in the swamp one night. His song doesn't seem complete, so he invites other animals to join in. Nothing sounds right until the littlest voice in the swamp joins the song - that of a tiny firefly. A wonderfully illustrated picture book with the important message that small voices need to be heard too.

A little frog sat in the nighttime air
in the swamp by the light of the moon. He sat all alone in the little green pond, singing his little frog tune.
They found some mice on a fallen log
who were playing a miniature gong. Into the night they sang “LA DE DA DA!” and froggy called, “Please sing along.”
Some birds flew down from high above
when they heard the hullabaloo. “We love the song you’re singing, and we want to join in too!”
So the birds sang, “COO!” and the noise just grew. The Fish sang “OH!” in the pond below. The mice sang “LA!” to the brightest star. The crocodile hummed and beat his drum, while the little frog sang his tune.

In the rockpool Rockpools only appear when the waves retreat and the tide is low, revealing miniature underwater worlds. Rockpools teem with life, but the animals that live here have to cope with crashing waves and changing temperatures. Crabs lurk under clumps of seaweed, starfish cling to the rocks while small fish, such as gobies and blennies, dart between fronds of seaweed.
On the rockpool floor, you may find molluscs, barnacles and sea anemones, gently waving their tentacles. If you’re really lucky, you may spot larger creatures, such as lobsters or hermit crabs. And beneath the seemingsly calm waters, life and death dramas are being played out. Limpets battle against starfish, sea anemones fight each other for the best spot while cuttlefish sneak up on unsuspecting prey.
Prawns move very quickly and can suddenly dart backwards.
Sea anemones may look like plants but are related to jellyfish, with stinging tentacles.for catching prey. Star ascidians are beautiful, jelly-like, creatures. When disturbed, they expel jets of water. 16

Deep sea monster Growing almost the length of a bus the giant squid is the largest invertebrate (animal without a backbone) on earth. Giant squid live in the dark depths of the ocean, and are rarely seen by humans. They have long, strong glistening tentalces, lined with hundreds of suckers, each ringed with sharp teeth. They catch fish, shrimp, and other squid, which they eat in their beak-like mouths. Sperm whales have been found with their sucker marks, suggesting these two giants battle each other, far beneath the waves.
A giant squid has eight arms and two long feeding tentacles for seizing prey.
A giant squid’s eyes are the size of a dinner plate, to help it detect prey in the murky, lightless depths.

Long grooves line a blue whale’s throat. These expand so the whale can take in huge mouthfuls when feeding.
52
Blue whales are the largest animal ever to have lived. Stretching as long as three buses end to end, they cruise the ocean, feeding on some of the smallest creatures.
Narwhal
In summer, blue whales migrate to the cooler waters of the poles to feed, and then in winter they migrate back towards the warmer waters of the equator to breed. They travel alone, or in pairs, but may be in constant contact with other whales, as their calls, louder than a jet engine, can carry thousands of miles across the ocean.
Blue whales feed on tiny shrimplike animals called krill. They lunge, mouth wide open, at a mass of krill. Then they push the water out through the bristles that line their mouths and swallow the krill that are left behind.
