SOUPER TANG’S

MRCA’S HISTORIC CHARITY DRIVE TO USHER IN 2025

The association aims to raise half a million ringgit at its Chinese New Year dinner for scholarships and charity homes.

MRCA is poised to begin 2025 with its most ambitious philanthropic initiative to date, setting a target to raise half a million ringgit through its upcoming Chinese New Year dinner.

The funds will benefit deserving scholars supported by the MRCA Branding Education Charity Foundation.

Since its inception in 1992, MRCA has united Malaysia’s retail sector, championing its members’ interests while supporting the community.

The association currently represents over 600 members, 40,000 outlets and 400,000 employees nationwide. Its latest initiative underscores its unwavering commitment to giving back to society.

GIVING BACK

The MRCA Branding Education Charity Foundation, spearheaded by MRCA Lifetime Honorary President Dato' Liaw Choon Liang, CEO of Focus Point Holdings, has been instrumental in awarding scholarships to children of MRCA members’ employees.

It supports education by enabling these children to pursue their academic goals without the burden of debt.

“Offering scholarships motivates students to strive for success and enhances their chances of employability in their chosen career path,” said MRCA President Datuk Dr. Ken Phua.

“Scholarships also make education more accessible to students from diverse backgrounds, ensuring that their financial limitations do not hinder their opportunities. Education is a powerful tool for social mobility, and scholarships can break the cycle of poverty by providing avenues for advancements,” he added.

“It enables recipients to pursue higher education, develop their skills and contribute meaningfully to their communities and chosen fields.”

By investing in these initiatives, MRCA fosters future leaders, cultivates innovators and develops professionals who can make a positive impact on society.

STAR EVENT

The Chinese New Year dinner, led by Dato' Winnie Lim, Dato' Vincent Choo and Henry Low, promises to be a highlight of MRCA’s 2025 calendar.

The event will feature a charity auction facilitated by Henry Butcher Art Auctioneers, renowned professionals in the Malaysian auction scene.

Among the sought-after auction items are exclusive dining experiences with MRCA leaders, including Valiram Group Executive Director Dato' Sharan Valiram and rare opportunities to engage with prominent figures in entrepreneurship and private equity.

For Phua, aligning philanthropy with the association’s Chinese New Year celebration is both meaningful and fitting.

“Philanthropy has always been central to MRCA’s mission. By starting the year with a meaningful effort, we reaffirm our commitment to supporting education and uplifting communities. It is a powerful way to reflect the hard work and dedication of our members and their employees,” he explained.

This decision was endorsed by the MRCA council and the trustees of the MRCA Branding Education Charity Foundation.

“Supporting education is one of the most impactful ways to give back. By helping the next generation succeed, we invest in a brighter future for all,” Phua added.

A self-taught artist from Johor, Corlin, who is now based in Kuala Lumpur, specialises in abstract art and considers herself an unconventional artist. Instead of regular brushes, she uses mediums such as resin and gravity as tools for achieving unique and organic effects in her art.

The audience watches in captivated silence as the couple moves with fluid intensity, each step a mix of grace and passion. The connection between them is palpable, each glance and subtle movement telling a story, leaving the audience in awe of the chemistry that seems to transcend the dance itself. The flickering stage lights cast shadows that emphasise the tension and beauty of their every move, as if time slows down and all that exists is the dance.

Liku Liku explores life’s winding journey, expressed through acrylic and sculpted canvas on canvas. The textured interplay of forms and colours reflects the unpredictable twists and turns of human experience. It invites viewers to embrace the beauty found in imperfection and movement.

Blending Tradition and Innovation: Souper Tang’s Journey

BLENDING TRADITION AND INNOVATION: SOUPER TANG’S JOURNEY

Souper Tang stays true to its roots in traditional Chinese herbal practices while adapting to modern consumer needs. Group Chief Executive Officer

Nevinn Leow shares how the brand crafts a holistic dining experience that seamlessly integrates wellness, flavour, and precision.

Malaysia’s largest soup chain as endorsed by the Malaysia Book of Records, Souper Tang, is expanding its horizons.

Plans are in motion to open outlets in Singapore by the second quarter of 2025, followed by expansions in Indonesia and Australia, with its signature products already available in markets like Australia, Taiwan, and Singapore.

Group Chief Executive Officer

Nevinn Leow says the company is actively developing additional distribution channels to support our global growth ambitions.

“Our regional expansion is guided by a careful balance of scalability and brand essence, and for international ventures, we adopt joint ventures and guided franchise models to maintain the authenticity of our products,” Leow adds.

Founded in 2009 as Tang Shifu by traditional Chinese medicine

(TCM) practitioners, the brand now operates 21 outlets across Malaysia.

“To ensure scalability without compromising the essence of our brand, all our outlets are corporateowned and managed due to the complexity and knowledge-based handling of TCM herbs,” Leow adds

CELEBRATING A MILESTONE

Closer to home, Souper Tang capped off 2024 with the opening of its flagship outlet at Sunway

Pyramid. Attended by nutritionists, pharmacists, and TCM practitioners, this milestone event also celebrated the launch of the SouperFast Herbal Soup product by two-time Paralympic Gold Medalist Cheah Liek How, marking a significant chapter in the brand’s journey. This innovative “Shop & Dine” concept cements its leadership in the herbal cuisine market.

Spanning nearly 570 square metres, the largest outlet of its kind in Malaysia boasts state-of-theart décor and multiple VIP rooms, event space, and a wide array of retail products.

“This integration of retail and dining elevates Souper Tang’s visibility while creating a modern environment that aligns with its brand identity,” says Leow who sees it as a pivotal moment in the brand’s journey.

By situating itself in a key urban hub, Leow says, the brand aims to connect with a wider demographic, showcasing its philosophy and identity in a prime location.

“This flagship outlet represents a bold step in our strategy to position Souper Tang as a household name synonymous with quality herbal cuisine,” he says.

WELLNESS TOURISM, CULINARY HERITAGE

Souper Tang’s flagship outlet at Sunway Pyramid was preceded by a grand prelude—the opening of a new outlet at Mid Valley Megamall which was officiated by Tourism Malaysia Deputy Director-General II (Promotions), Samuel Lee Thai Hung.

Held just 10 days prior, the grand opening aligned with the MalaysiaChina 50 Years of Friendship celebration and the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign, emphasizing the importance of wellness tourism and culinary heritage.

The event brought together prominent associations such as the

ASEAN Retail Franchise Federation (ARFF), Malaysia Retail-Chain Association (MRCA), Branding Association Malaysia (BAM), Malaysia Budget Hotel Association (MBHA), SME Association, Malaysian Association of Tour & Travel Agents (MATTA), Malaysian Association of Theme Parks & Family Attractions (MATFA), and the Malaysia Association of Hotels (MAH).

In his speech, Lee shared, “I believe Souper Tang embodies the spirit of Malaysia’s diverse culinary heritage, bringing to life Chinese traditions in a way that resonates with all Malaysians. I hope this new outlet inspires visitors to experience Malaysia’s vibrant culture and warm hospitality firsthand.”

The Mid Valley Megamall outlet

showcases a curated selection of products, including premium bird’s nests and thoughtfully crafted hampers, offering customers diverse ways to enjoy its wellness-focused offerings.

Leow describes the outlet’s opening as a pivotal moment for the brand: “The opening of the outlet at Mid Valley Megamall is a significant step in our mission to make Chinese wellness cuisine more accessible to a broader audience.”

He adds, “Through our focus on culinary traditions and wellness, we are proud to contribute to Malaysia’s efforts in promoting the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign and positioning the country as a destination for both culinary tourism and health-focused experiences.”

THE “SHOP & DINE” EXPERIENCE

Souper Tang’s unique “Shop & Dine” concept sets it apart from traditional standalone restaurants. Every outlet features a wellness boutique offering products like chicken essence, SouperFast herbal soup packs, organic fruit enzymes, and ginseng wine.

These products are seamlessly incorporated into the menu, allowing customers to experience their benefits firsthand while dining.

Leow believes this creates a holistic experience for customers, who can enjoy these products in-store and purchase them for home use.

“Our approach makes wellness an accessible and rewarding lifestyle,” adds Leow who is also the company’s Managing Director.

The integration of retail and dining is further enhanced by a membership programme that provides exclusive benefits, creating synergy between the two aspects of the business.

“Our membership programme adds another layer to this experience, providing exclusive pricing and rebates,” he adds.

To cater to modern customers’ desire for meaningful experiences, Souper Tang pays homage to Chinese heritage with traditional round-table dining, as well as spaces for family and corporate gatherings.

MEETING MODERN CONSUMER NEEDS

In today’s fast-paced world, digital integration is crucial to retail strategy, and Souper Tang is no exception.

The Souper Tang app, for example, offers tailored recommendations based on customer preferences and body conditions.

It also simplifies reservations and integrates seamlessly with the company’s Customer Relationship Management programme, providing members with exclusive benefits across online and in-store purchases.

“Additionally, our enterprise resource planning system optimises resource planning, ensuring smooth management of omni-retail channels,” Leow notes.

This unified approach enhances both operational efficiency and customer experience, reflecting Souper Tang’s forward-thinking ethos.

Post-pandemic shifts in consumer behaviour have also driven the brand’s expansion into e-Commerce, offering over 300 TCM-based wellness products online.

As a retail-focused brand, Souper Tang navigates challenges by staying on a focused niche track, promoting wellness dining instead of competing in the crowded general Chinese cuisine space.

“We leverage the growing demand for holistic wellness by expanding our presence into diverse communities, introducing innovative delicacies crafted by our research and development team, and offering convenient retail products for consumers to enjoy at home,” Leow shares.

This gave birth to Souper Tang’s latest product, the SouperFast Herbal Soup series, a revolutionary product line catering to busy lifestyles.

“These soups are designed for consumers who value health but lack the time to prepare traditional herbal dishes,” Leow explains.

REVOLUTIONISING HERBAL CUISINE

The SouperFast Herbal Soup series is undeniably a testament to Souper Tang’s ability to innovate.

Souper Tang outlets, like this one at IOI City Mall, Putrajaya, are designed to resemble wellness boutique.
Souper Tang retail products are thoughtfully incorporated into the dine-in menu, allowing patrons to savour and experience their benefits.

Designed for modern, busy consumers, the series reduces traditional cooking times from hours to just 30 minutes.

The quick-to-prepare soup is produced by using advanced techniques to break herbs into smaller particles that are cooked and infused with slow-cooked chicken broth.

“The result is a more hygienic, nutrient-dense soup with enhanced absorption benefits without compromising on nutrition and taste,” Leow says

The key difference between this SouperFast soup and the ones served in the restaurant is the absence of fresh ingredients like meat and vegetables that would enhance its appeal as a complete meal.

“Nutrition-wise, both are equally beneficial,” assures Leow.

COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABILITY

In an era of heightened environmental awareness, Souper Tang is committed to sustainability. The brand responsibly sources ingredients and has banned products linked to cruel practices, such as e-jiao (donkey-hide gelatin), since early 2024.

Eco-friendly initiatives include sustainable packaging and advocacy

for eliminating plastic straws through its role as the ambassador of Last Straw Johor.

“We’re also exploring renewable energy solutions for our central kitchen and optimising supply chains to reduce our carbon footprint,” Leow shares.

These efforts reflect the brand’s alignment with evolving consumer expectations for sustainability.

“We are committed to aligning our operations with evolving consumer expectations for a sustainable future,” the company stated.

ACCOLADES CEMENTING LEADERSHIP

Over the years, Souper Tang has amassed a string of accolades that reinforce its position as a market leader in herbal cuisine.

These include recognition from

the Malaysia Book of Records for ‘Most Bird’s Nest Sold in a Year’ with 243,119 units sold, and ‘Most Herbal Soup Sold in a Year’ with 380,930 units sold. On the international front, Souper Tang is also recognised as ASEAN’s largest restaurant chain specialising in herbal cuisine by ASEAN Records.

“These achievements highlight our commitment to excellence, innovation, and customer satisfaction,” says Leow.

They, Leow says, also amplify Souper Tang’s mission of promoting healthier lifestyles and inspiring communities to embrace nourishing, herbal-based dining as part of their daily lives.

These accolades strengthen the brand’s position as a leader in the herbal cuisine market and validate its commitment to promoting healthier lifestyles.

“As pioneers in herbal-based dining, we continue to set a benchmark for wellness-focused gastronomy, both in Malaysia and across ASEAN,” Leow adds.

A HERITAGE OF WELLNESS

When the company ventured into the food and beverage scene as Tang Shifu in 2009, it only offered six highly nutritional herbal soups to

meet a growing demand for homecooked alternatives.

However, market research in 2013 revealed challenges, including perceptions of being overly medicinal and expensive, and regional pronunciation issues, which prompted Leow to spearhead a rebranding effort.

“Rebranding as Souper Tang in 2013 marked a transformation from a medicinal concept to a lifestyle vitality experience,” Leow recalls.

The new brand came with a wider menu of TCM-inspired dishes alongside nutrient-packed soups, emphasizing taste first, with health benefits as an added value.

Today, Souper Tang offers over 100 TCM-inspired dishes in modern,

spacious settings for both casual meals and corporate dining.

Staying true to its roots, the brand strives to adapt to consumer demands, creating a wellness dining lifestyle that seamlessly blends heritage with modern expectations.

“We honour traditional Chinese herbal practices by adhering to TCM principles, balancing the right portions and combinations of herbs with fresh ingredients to create synergistic benefits,” Leow explains.

He continues: “Our dishes are first developed by TCM doctors and practitioners to ensure their health benefits, then meticulously refined by our chefs to make them both delicious and appealing.” Leow emphasises the importance of knowledge-based practices, such as tailoring herbs to suit specific diners’ needs, while maintaining meticulous attention to retail products and staff training.

This ensures the offerings deliver both wellness and flavour, accompanied by informed and attentive service.

“This harmony of heritage and innovation defines our approach to modern herbal cuisine. We empower healthier lifestyles through holistic, flavourful dining,” Leow concludes. ■

Festive Joy, Giving Spirit

MRCA Foundation shares Christmas cheer with a heartfelt donation to uplift lives.

Just before Christmas 2024, the MRCA Branding Education Charity Foundation shared festive joy and hope to the children of Pertubuhan Kebajikan Anak Yatim Mary KL with a generous donation of RM20,000 as part of their annual Christmas charity initiative. This activity of hope reflects MRCA’s commitment to community welfare and giving back.

The event was organised by MRCA council member and head of CSR Jordan Ng, and spearheaded by secretariat member M Kirthana. Their aim was to exemplify the true spirit of Christmas – love of neighbour, sharing and giving.

Prominent attendees included MRCA Branding Education Charity Foundation Chairman Dato’ Liaw Choon Liang, MRCA President Datuk Dr. Ken Phua, MRCA Lifetime Honorary President Datuk Seri Garry

Chua, MRCA Lifetime Honorary President Shirley Tay alongside other council members.

Their presence highlighted the collective dedication of the association in fostering joy and support during the festive season.

MEANINGFUL GIVING

The children of Pertubuhan Kebajikan Anak Yatim Mary KL were filled with excitement and gratitude, reaffirming MRCA’s dedication to uplifting lives and spreading cheer.

Chairman Liaw, in his speech, extended his gratitude to the

foundation’s Trustees and Council Members for their generosity and dedication.

“Today’s visit is a testament to the true meaning of Christmas: sharing not just gifts or essentials but also our time, warmth and love,” he said.

“To the children and staff, I want you to know that you are not alone. You are cherished and valued, and we hope this small gesture brings smiles to your faces and warmth to your hearts,” he said.

“Christmas reminds us that even the smallest acts of love and compassion can create meaningful change.”

COMMUNITY WELFARE

MRCA President Datuk Dr. Ken Phua reiterated that the home visits and supporting the underprivileged during major festive seasons is a long-standing tradition of the association.

“We aim for our efforts to reach all communities, making each feel included,” he continued, noting

festive seasons, among them, Hari Raya, Deepavali and Chinese New Year.

“For each occasion, the MRCA Foundation allocates RM20,000, demonstrating our inclusive approach to community welfare across different cultures and festivities in Malaysia,” Phua added.

Established in 2010 under the leadership of then-President Dato’ Tay Sim Kim, with an initial fund of RM1 million, the MRCA Foundation has become a symbol of the association’s commitment to uplifting society.

Its mission is to provide financial relief to the poor and underprivileged, support medical and educational needs, recognise academic achievements of MRCA members’ children and implement

TEAM WORK

Phua emphasised that the success of the Christmas Charity Visitation 2024 would not have been possible without the dedication and generosity of MRCA members.

As the event concluded, the MRCA Foundation’s commitment to fostering community spirit and support was evident, ensuring that the festive season brings joy not only to the beneficiaries but also to those who give.

It continues to set a benchmark for how businesses can meaningfully contribute to society, ensuring that no one is left behind during the festive seasons.

Pertubuhan Kebajikan Anak Yatim Mary KL was named after its founder, the late Reverend Dr Mary Rayappan, who established the home in 2003 for four abandoned children in Setapak, Kuala Lumpur. ■

• Leverage advanced features that include inventory tracking, intercompany management, and robotic process automation to optimise operations.

CASE STUDIES: DRIVING SUCCESS IN RETAIL AND F&B

A notable success story is a retail chain of convenience shops that successfully transitioned from Microsoft Excel to Oracle NetSuite, revolutionising its operations. This shift enabled automated sales data integration, significantly accelerated month-end closings, and provided real-time visibility into inventory across multiple outlets, ensuring smoother and more efficient management processes.

Similarly a nightlife chain of restaurants’ migration from SQL to Oracle NetSuite proved transformative. The new system streamlined financial operations, eliminating manual consolidation challenges and enhancing operational efficiency. Additionally, the enhanced security features of Oracle NetSuite safeguarded the business, effectively mitigating risks such as ransomware attacks, which were a concern with the previous system.

Another success story is a coffee chain of restaurants with about 600 outlets that embraced Oracle NetSuite for its multi country operations. This adoption reduced manual efforts, such as data entry and calculations, while improving financial accuracy and reporting capabilities. The comprehensive

integration facilitated seamless management across subsidiaries, ensuring the scalability and precision needed for their continued growth.
