In terrifying scenes like this one black and white effects creates a sense of panic, darkness and even confusion. For instance in this clip the white- faced and dressed characters symbolise the ones who are alive and the dark- faced and the ones who are wearing dark colours symbioses the dead. This Is almost a clever way of showing the mass of people who are dead, as it makes it easier for the audience to figure out who is alive, which is very few in comparison. This instantly creates a feeling of darkness and terror because of the audiences realization on how many people are dead. The black and white effect also relates the era in which the film is set in which is world war II, the effect makes the film seem more realistic making the audience more aware of how serious and terrifying the world war was. However towards the end of the clip the audience is surprised and stunned as there is suddenly colour featured in the clip. This is again is a clever technique because the image stands out to the audience, the same way in which it does to the main character.

The colour red symbolises danger, anger and panic in which again both the audience and main character feel as a result of this image. Overall the black and white effect works very well in this clip as it almost brings together the audience and the main characters emotions. It also makes the audience realise the time set of the film making it more realistic and life-like, creating a terrifying and dramatic feeling to film.
