Simply the Best — and all of the rest

I

t’s August — a time to celebrate everything that is Simply the Best in our region. Readers voted and the results are in. Most of this month’s magazine is devoted to them. Our regular features are here as well. This month for In My Neighborhood, we profile Downtown Harrisburg, the hub for much of what is Simply the Best. Downtown is the nucleus for the region with the Susquehanna River reaching the shores of downtown to the east and the West Shore communities to the west with our entertainment gem, City Island, sitting right in the middle. Part of having a successful downtown is having a transportation center, which the train and bus station off Chestnut street provides to the area. Many local restaurants are just blocks away, but just around the corner sits a Harrisburg mainstay, The Alva, which we profile in our In My Neighborhood business feature. This month’s guest bartender for Bartender’s Choice comes highly recommended, and he did not disappoint. Cork & Fork’s Thomas Rory McGrath mixes up speakeasy style drinks on both sides of the river. When he’s not mixing, he’s playing guitar for a punk band. Our #hbgmag Influencer for August, Richard Utley, fits in perfectly with the Simply the Best theme as he has been showcasing regional businesses in the Central PA Black Business Directory for the past 10 years. He also gives back to his community passions — youth and health. This month we introduce you to Stefan Hawkins, owner of Good Brotha’s Book Cafe at 1419 N. 3rd St., who will write the By the Book column every other month. Hawkins, a lifelong Harrisburg resident and 2008 Harrisburg High grad, opened the cafe at the start of 2021 after first owning House of Vegans. He says he got the idea to open Good Brotha’s because he believed representation mattered and he wanted to show black kids in Harrisburg that you can be black and own 4 HARRISBURG MAGAZINE AUGUST 2021

a coffee shop, and that it’s OK to read books, too. He and a few friends started a book club last summer called Good Brothas Can’t Read Book Club, which spurred his desire to create a cafe with coffee AND books to bring more people in who could enjoy a good book. He also owns his own coffee brand, which will now be sold in Karns and Giant grocery stores, too, so that he can own 100 percent of his business to control the narrative. He’s an active member of several nonprofits working to make Harrisburg safer and better for the next generation. Danika Baer, our Nourishing Bites columnist, recently passed her Registered Dietitian exam so can add some initials behind her name now — Danika Baer, MPS, RD. Congratulations, Danika! We also introduce our new personal finance column in this issue, which will be written by Bryson Roof of Fort Pitt Capital Group in Harrisburg. The column, “The Finance Hound,” draws its name from Roof’s expertise in both finance and in training AKC beagles and judging AKC field trials. An avid outdoorsman, Roof enjoys saltwater fishing, camping, and managing large tracts of land for wildlife conservation. He is active in the community. The focus of Artful Inspirations this month is truly inspiring. Painter Eric Anfinson found his talent after a shaman told him, “Once you release the idea of being like them, embrace your role. You will find your path.’’ This month, Harrisburg Magazine was fortunate to sample delicious food from two local eateries — the recently opened Bellia’s Pizza at 2256 Linglestown Road and JB Lovedraft’s MicroPub at 225 N. 2nd St. with a new brewery location opening Aug. 7 at 165 Gateway Drive in Mechanicsburg. Get the scoop on this new brewery and entertainment venue. 7 Happy August — Deb Lynch

Thomas McGrath and Jason "Holy Toledo?" Wilson mix up drinks at Cork & Fork Osteria 6 HARRISBURG MAGAZINE AUGUST 2021

homas Rory McGrath knows a thing or two about mixing a good cocktail after more than 20 years behind the bar, the past six years at Cork and Fork in both downtown Harrisburg and in Camp Hill, where he is head bartender with a crew of eight others. Not only will drinkers get a tasty cocktail from McGrath, but he and the others work together to come up with drink specials with a different bartender creating the week’s specialty every week. That’s a lot of great drinks to try. “They’re all pretty awesome at coming up with their own cocktails,” he said of his bar team. “As a lead bar person, you're only as strong as the bar team and serving staff that you have working aside you. We have one of the best around!” Everyone knows that being a bartender requires a special personality — a mix of counselor, night owl, and chef. The hours are tough, so bartenders need an outlet. McGrath’s avocation — or other job — is playing guitar in a Harrisburg/Washington, D.C.-based punk band called Don’t Sleep, about which its promoter wrote on its website: “While Don’t Sleep’s music can be described as aggressive, fast, and energetic, they’ve managed to infuse melody and an element of pop sensibility into their songs.” The band released a music video called “Refine Me” soon after Pennsylvania reopened during the pandemic. Its promoter describes it as “an anthem about how to come out stronger on the other side.” The video is available on the Mission Two Entertainment YouTube Channel at www.youtube.com/watch?v=UddWh7fc3W0 Although their music is edgy, McGrath notes that band members have 15 children between them — he has three (17, 13, and 4) who dabble with instruments. The band hasn’t performed live since the start of Covid, but has a weeklong West Coast trip planned in the fall. Typically, they perform up and down the East Coast. Bartending has afforded him the opportunity to be in a band — something he’s done since his days as a student at Harrisburg Area Community College when he was with a band called the Commercials that toured 200 days out of the year. He started working in restaurants and bars (The Millworks, Ceoltas, McGraths) to support his band habit and 20 years later, he’s still doing both. Today, customers can find him at Cork & Fork in Harrisburg on Monday nights and Saturday brunches, and at the Camp Hill location on Tuesday and Friday nights. At both places, diners can be sure that he will be “making it a little more crafty.” McGrath thinks Harrisburg has a really great bar scene with many talented bartenders. “All are kind of going towards a little bit more of a craft cocktail,” he said, noting that at Cork & Fork “it’s a riff on some old, and we try to use that as a template to make it your own. I definitely go between moderate and classic with my bar team.” 7

Philosophy on drinks: Great drinks do not need to be complicated. Keep it simple and make simple great. I love three or four ingredients that really let your base spirit be the star of the cocktail. Negroni, daiquiri, gin martini, old fashioned ... that's all you need. Thoughts about your cocktails: Take something already great and make it your own. Like a guitar that has only 12 bars and six strings, there are really only six cocktail templates. It's all about adding who you are with what you have to the drink to make it your own. Connecting with your guest is what it's all about.

McGrath’s signature drink My go-to that gets an easy nod of approval would be a riff on a Vieux Carré: 2 ounces Eagle Rare bourbon 1 ounce Perrier Ferrand 1840 Cognac 1 ounce Cocchi torino vermouth ¼ scant ounce Benedictine 2 dashes peychauds bitters 2 dashes angostura bitters Lemon twist over a large cube.

Your day job?: I’m a father of three and a musician when I'm not behind the stick. I’m also a Non-Profit Nintendo NES game and punk band T-shirt collector. When McGrath works at the bar: State Street, Harrisburg on Monday nights and Saturday brunch, and Camp Hill on Tuesday and Friday nights. 7

McGrath’s Dossier

Words of advice to home mixologists: Study the classics and understand the science of balancing a cocktail. For the beginner — always fresh juices, keep vermouth in your fridge. Also, you can make your own simple syrups super easily — 1:1 sugar and water.

NOMINATE A BARTENDER! harrisburgmagazine.com/submissions

Inspirations: The Death and Co. bar program has been a top inspiration. Also, love what Hidden Harbor in Pittsburgh and Clavel in Baltimore are doing. Joaquin Simo, Alex Day, Jillian Vose, and Alex Jump are all amazing bartenders I really look up to. Favorite spirit straight: Mezcal and super hogo Jamaican rums (funky flavored classic pot-stilled rums) Recommendations of two or three spirits to try: Some spirits that I love that people haven't had much experience with — but once they do it opens their possibilities to their cocktails — would most likely be green chartreuse, any choice of amaro or sherry, and micro-using absinthe and saline (1:1 water/ salt). Try fernet until you love it. Favorite spirit to mix: Rum because you can pair and combine so many different rums to have a unique profile for your drinks each time. Most commonly ordered drinks at your bar: The "make me whatever," which is a great sign that people trust us. Tequila has been huge these last two years, but vodka still pays the bills. In My Neighborhood

Downtown Harrisburg Story and Photos By Deborah Lynch dlynch@harrisburgmagazine.com

D

owntown Harrisburg sometimes suffers from an identity crisis or misperceptions from outsiders. Steep street and garage parking prices due to private ownership deters outsiders from venturing into the Capital city, but the $3-$9 price to park might be a worthwhile price to pay for all Downtown has to offer. Beautiful Riverfront Park beckons with park benches, sculpture gardens, and regularly occurring events. This summer, nationally touring concerts return to the stages there beginning Aug. 27 with Young the Giant. Others include Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, Aug. 28; Cage the Elephant, Sept. 23; and Portugal the Man, Sept. 25. Even if you’re not paying to go, Downtown will be rocking. For those who have never toured the state Capitol, the building, which is on the National Historic Register, is a treasure not to be missed. The rotunda dome and murals by artist Violet Oakley truly make it one of the more grand state capitols. The doors to the Finance Building on North Drive were sculpted by the famous sculptor Carl Milles. That art deco building along with the Forum provide architectural highlights in Downtown. Whether it’s murals, or sculptures, or green space, or beautiful buildings, Downtown Harrisburg offers beautiful walking destinations with food and drinks always close by. It also offers nightlife and entertainment at the many restaurants and entertainment venues such as the Whitaker Center, the Forum, and the stages in Riverfront Park. Looking to nominate a neighborhood near you? To nominate, go to https://benchmarkmedia.wufoo.com/forms/in-my-neighborhood.

Physical boundaries: According to the city of Harrisburg planning director, the consensus for the boundaries for Downtown Harrisburg is Forester Street as the northern boundary, Cameron Street as the eastern boundary, the railroad tracks and Interstate 83 as the southern boundary, and the Susquehanna River (with the exception of City Island) as the western boundary.

Businesses/Groceries: Downtown Harrisburg is home to nearly every type of business imaginable — from governmental to nonprofit to restaurants and bars to shops to entertainment venues to lobbying groups to associations to law offices to salons. You name it, it’s in downtown — except grocery. Once known as a food desert, things seemed to be looking up when Provisions, a specialty grocery, opened in 2017 in Strawberry Square. It had a short shelf-life as it closed in January 2020, leaving downtown Harrisburg with just a few small quick marts.

Restaurants/Bars: Here’s where Downtown rules with a variety of restaurants for all levels of spending. More upscale nights out are offered at venues like Ad Lib Craft Kitchen & Bar and 1700 Degrees Steakhouse, both located within the Hilton Harrisburg. Additionally, Cafe Fresco, Stock’s on 2nd, Cork & Fork (see story on Page 6), Home 231, Sammy’s Authentic Italian Restaurant, Mangia Qui, Suba and Rubicon offer quality cuisine. For more casual or faster dining, options are nearly limitless with choices including 2nd Street Shawarma, Dania’s Kitchen, the Vegetable Hunter, Arooga’s, Bollywood, McGrath’s Pub, El Rancho, El Sol, Burger Yum, Au Bon Lieu, and many others. Happy hour hunters have lots to choose from, too: Federal Taphouse, JB Lovedraft’s MicroPub (see story, Page 30), Sawyers, Bourbon Street Saloon, and others. Let’s not forget coffee and juice — Downtown will never be sleepy with coffee shops on North Street (Elementary), State Street and Strawberry Square (Little Amps), and Walnut Street (Denim Coffee). Fresh Pressed, a juice and smoothie bar just opened on N. 2nd Street. The city of Harrisburg is continuing the “Saturdays in the City” restaurant program started last summer as a response to Covid from 3:30-10 p.m. on Saturdays this summer. In partnership with the Downtown Improvement District, the city closes N. 2nd Street from Market to Pine, State Street from Church to N. Second westbound, North Street from Susquehanna to 3rd, and Conoy Street to allow street dining. Many downtown restaurants participate.

Other notable features:

Downtown Improvement District: The mission of this organization is to create a “clean, safe, and beautiful downtown Harrisburg,” according to Todd Vander Woude, executive director of the DID. A big part of that involves keeping things clean — a crew goes around seven days a week with machines, street sweepers, and brooms, and cleans up graffiti, too. Safety is addressed by hiring off-duty police officers to patrol downtown on Friday and Saturday nights as well as through camera projects with the city and Dauphin County to increase camera surveillance downtown. More than 350 flower baskets and planters address the beautification part of the equation. Together with Sprocket Mural, the DID has put out calls for artists to paint fire hydrants, electrical boxes, and planters downtown. It also has placed eye-catching bike racks that look like bicycles around downtown, and has a banner program. Funding for the DID comes from property owners downtown who pay an assessment that allows the DID to supplement city services downtown. The DID is also involved in downtown activities and events such as parades, Harrisburg Restaurant Week, and Saturdays in the City. Through its social media (hbgdid), it promotes everything downtown.

10 HARRISBURG MAGAZINE AUGUST 2021

It would be remiss not to mention the most notable feature of all downtown — the state Capitol building on 3rd street and the entire State Capitol Complex that stretches along 3rd Street from Walnut Street on the south to North Street on the north and Commonwealth Avenue to the east. The complex is made up of four large buildings where thousands of state employees worked prior to the pandemic. The State Museum of Pennsylvania also sits by the Capitol complex. Downtown is also home to the Sci Tech campus of Harrisburg High as well as to the growing Harrisburg University, for which a new tower is currently under construction on Chestnut and 3rd streets. UPMC Harrisburg sits on a large city block between Front and 2nd streets and Chestnut and Mary streets. The Dauphin County Courthouse sits on Front and Market streets with many law offices and associations nearby. The McCormick Riverfront Library, a branch of the Dauphin County Library System, is on Walnut Street at Front Street. Downtown is also the transportation hub for the city with buses and trains coming into the Harrisburg Transportation Center off Chestnut Street. Capital Area Transit (CAT) buses go there and also through the hub at 2nd and Market streets.

HARRISBURG MAGAZINE AUGUST 2021 11

Living here: In addition to several hotels, the biggest of which are the Hilton Harrisburg and Crowne Plaza Harrisburg-Hershey, downtown is home to several apartment complexes including Executive House Apartments, B’Nai B’Rith Apartments, Mulberry Station Apartments, Old City Hall Apartments, Pennsylvania Place, and more recently renovated projects like those being done by Harristown including The Flats at Strawberry Square, F@TT, SoMa, The Bogg, The Fox, and more. Downtown does include some single-family dwellings as well.

Last word: Lest we forget, Downtown Harrisburg also offers outdoor green space with the much-used path along the river (both along Front Street and below it along the river). Riverfront Park is the site of multiple events from Artsfest to Kipona to 4th of July activities to a myriad of concerts and other events. One can always see people running, walking, biking, scootering, and moseying along the trail through Riverfront Park. City dwellers can fish from the esplanade along the river, removing themselves from the hubbub of urban life. City Island is technically part of Downtown, too, and offers plenty of entertainment options including minor league baseball, mini-golf, train rides, food, and other activities. The Harrisburg Mural trail goes through Downtown with some bright colorful paintings on the sides of buildings, and the Riverfront trail is part of the Capital Area Greenbelt, which connects Downtown to 20 miles of greenspace surrounding the city.

You’re somebody even before “somebody kills you”

A

s this bipolar tropical Pennsylvania summer settles in, and the few Covid restrictions we have left are beginning to lift, I wonder what’s going to happen to that long-loved passion for reading now that we aren’t confined to our houses any longer. I truly believe as bad as Covid was, it was a little blessing in disguise because it gave us all a chance to sit down and appreciate the small things again — reading being one of those small things that I missed most. During Covid, I had the opportunity to read books again that I never would have gotten the chance to pick up anytime soon. I started a book club for Black men to rekindle that joy of cracking open a freshly bought book and smelling the paper as the scent whiffed into your face with the first paper being turned. I was able to inhale the pages of the late, great Nipsey Hussle biography, The Marathon Don’t Stop: The Life and Times of Nipsey Hussle, for one of my first books this summer. It told of the tragically shortlived life of a Los Angeles rapper by the name of Ermias Asghedom or as the world knew him “Nipsey Hussle.” His biography went into depth on a commonly heard story about a Black man growing up in the impoverished neighborhoods in America, which some of us know all too well; except, we didn’t know about his childhood, and what led him to become the prolific musician that we discovered him to be before his untimely death on March 31, 2019. Another late, great rapper from Brooklyn, Biggie Smalls, once said in his song that “nobody knows you until somebody kills you.” And people who didn’t know who Nipsey Hussle was might feel that this is true. Who was Nipsey before his death? Why was everyone in love with him, and his music? What did he talk about that made him this prolific figure, if nobody knew him until somebody killed him? His biography examined all those things and more because Nipsey was more than just a rapper. He tried to wake up “the hood” to making

smarter financial decisions with its money, and trying to get average everyday working Americans to invest smarter when they were able to obtain extra funds. He may also have talked about cars, clothes, lost women, and gang activities from growing up on Crenshaw in Los Angeles, but that was the product of his environment. He spoke on what he saw, and what he and his friends experienced. A lot of Black Americans experienced the same things, yet we all want to be financially free of having to worry about debt, our next bill, and where our next meal is coming from. Nipsey embodied that, and that’s why I picked up his biography to get a closer look at the man who became a legend after his death. I felt so much for what he said that I hung his picture up in the café that I own. Nipsey Hussle’s 448-page book speaks to more people than somebody from the urban community. He spoke to the masses of people who come from the struggling streets of an American city but who hope to live in a nicer neighborhood on the other side of town. If by chance anyone would like to get to know Nipsey now that he's not here with us in the physical, I do not doubt that they’ll find his biography to be very compelling to say the least. I hope it will help anyone who reads it to better understand that you really are somebody before “somebody kills you”. 7 Stefan Hawkins was born and raised in Harrisburg. He opened Good Brotha’s Book Cafe in January and has been leading a Good Brothas Can’t Read Book Club since last summer.

Superfoods really can rescue diets with more heroes than might be expected

hat does the word “superfood” bring to mind? While I like to imagine a potato with X-ray vision or an apple wearing a cape, in reality, the term has become a buzzword, popular across media outlets as the be-all and end-all of good health. Proponents of superfoods tout that they are the secret to health benefits ranging from longevity and chronic disease prevention to weight loss and even improved mood. Dietitians often avoid the term because it implies that certain foods and only these foods have superpowers that will solve all our health problems. But what makes a superfood super? I want to explain what qualifies as a superfood and how to incorporate them in a healthy, balanced way. By scientific standards, there is no technical, regulatory definition of the term such as those for “organic,” “low-sodium,” or “gluten-free.” This means that any food can technically be labeled as a superfood. The term generally refers to nutrient-dense foods. Thus, they are marketed as good for one’s health. Nutrient-dense means a food has vitamins, minerals, and other 16 HARRISBURG MAGAZINE AUGUST 2021

nutrients, and it is generally low in calories. For example, we can think of a pastry compared to an apple. The pastry has added fat, sugar, and sodium and very little fiber. The apple has fiber, vitamins, phytochemicals, and a high water content, and therefore, is the more nutrient-dense food. Because the term “superfood” is not regulated, no set criteria exist to determine what qualifies as one. A food does not need to have a minimum amount of any nutrient or group of nutrients. However, there is a common thought that to be deemed a superfood, a food must be exotic or unusual. Açaí berries, goji berries, ancient grains, spirulina, and chia seeds are a few foods that have gained the superfood label. While these exotic, often more expensive foods may be nutrientdense and healthy, more common, economical, and even local foods can also be considered superfoods — sweet potatoes, kale, blueberries, strawberries, garlic, tomatoes, beets. The list could go on and on. These foods provide vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, and fiber. What it comes down to is, nutritionally speaking, there really is no such thing as a superfood, or any certain food that is greater than another on its own. If thinking of nutritionally dense foods as “super” makes them more appealing, I’m all in for using the term with the understanding that it is not officially regulated. As far as I’m concerned, a superfood is any whole or minimally processed, nutrient-dense food, particularly fruits

and vegetables. They all contain different amounts of beneficial nutrients that support our health. A pitfall to labeling some foods as “super” is the unintended consequence of focusing too heavily on those specific foods and on specific nutrients. While eating nutrientdense foods is a great idea, not one single food, not even a superfood, can offer everything that we need or cure a specific health ailment by itself. Rather, a healthy, balanced eating pattern that includes a variety of foods from all the food groups ensures that someone gets the wide variety of nutrients they need. If someone wants to incorporate açaí berries into their diet and someone else wants to get broccoli from the farmers’ market down the road, both are great choices. Each is choosing a nutrientdense food that they prefer. Summertime in central Pennsylvania is a wonderful time to explore local superfoods. I feel so fortunate to have access to delicious produce grown nearby. My favorite way to enjoy local produce is by subscribing to a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program because it pushes me to try new fruits and vegetables. Farmers’ markets, farm stands, and even ordering online directly from farms or vendors are other great ways to buy local. Some PA-grown superfoods that I am looking forward to enjoying this summer are berries, melons, peppers, tomatoes, squash, kale, chard, collard greens, onions, radishes, peas, okra, eggplant, cucumbers, and beets. Eating a variety of foods also means eating a variety of health-promoting nutrients. Plus, it’s fun and satisfying to try new foods and support local farmers. The bottom line is, there is no set definition of the term “superfoods.” Nutrient-dense foods that are generally low in calories, particularly whole or minimally processed fruits and vegetables, typically get the label. It can be fun to explore new, individual foods. However, rather than focusing too heavily on specific foods, a varied, balanced diet that consistently includes these nutrient-dense foods as a component will provide a wide variety of nutrients to meet the body’s needs. ovid-19 has presented many challenges for businesses. To adapt to this ever-changing environment, employers have adopted work-from-home policies, leveraged video conferencing and unfortunately, in many cases, reduced their workforce. It’s been more than a year since the pandemic began, and PA’s unemployment rate was 6.9% as of May 2021, while the overall unemployment rate for the U.S. was 5.8%. While this is better than stats from a year ago, many are still navigating unemployment. Although many state and federal packages were designed to assist with unemployment because of Covid-19, workers typically feel isolated and anxious while navigating unemployment, especially when it comes to finances. A career change highlights the importance of an emergency fund, especially if a career change was unplanned. The first step is to do a deep five into your finances to start building that emergency fund. To do this, you’ll want to develop a budget and reduce as many monthly expenses as possible. In an article on CNBC.com, Megan Leonhardt reported that roughly 37% of Americans would have to resort to a loan from family, the bank or credit cards for unexpected emergencies. After landing a replacement job, it is important to start building an emergency savings account for unforeseen contingencies. If you have an employer-sponsored retirement plan, such as a 401(k) or 403(b), it may be tempting to access these funds to cover monthly expenses while seeking new employment, but this should be considered only as a last resort. Accessing qualified retirement savings before age 59½ typically results in a 10% early withdrawal penalty. If you are not of retirement age, withdrawing funds early from retirement accounts reduces future growth and will likely impact future financial security in retirement. During a career transition, neighbors, friends, and family are likely to offer unsolicited advice. Beware of free advice. Consult with a financial professional or complete detailed research. General rules of thumb are a great starting point, but they do not always account for unique circumstances. For example, the general rule of thumb is to consolidate 401(k) assets into an IRA so that you

are not limited to investment options within the 401(k) offering. However, if your termination of employment is between age 55 and 59½, distributions from a 401(k) will avoid the 10% early withdrawal penalty that would otherwise be imposed on an IRA, so you would be able to access those funds early, if necessary. This is typically referred to as “the rule of 55.” Navigating unemployment, especially in the aftermath of Covid-19, can be extremely nuanced. One decision can greatly impact another, potentially adversely impacting taxes or eliminating someone from qualifying for assistance. It is often extremely useful to outline your current financial situation and develop a financial plan. Not only does this act as your financial road map, outlining your goals and quantifying your next steps tends to reduce the stress and anxiety associated with the uncertainty of a career change. It is important to update your financial plan when starting a new position. Take some time to understand your benefits package. If your new employer provides a qualified retirement plan, look into what level of participation allows you to receive the highest company contribution. If your company provides a health care plan, is there a way to save for medical expenses in a tax advantageous way? Frequently, employees do not take full advantage of their employer benefits, simply because they are unaware of the full offerings. Take the time to research your employer benefits package. In a stressful time, such as a career change, relying on a professional to help navigate uncertainty tends to reduce stress. If finding a new employer is challenging, do not hesitate to reach out to a recruiter. It is customary for the recruiter to collect compensation from the employer, not the job seeker. 7 Bryson J. YMCA Executive Director Jamien Harvey, left, and Richard Utley pose with some of the enthusiastic campers at the Camp Curtin Y.

Former state official uses his platform in the community — to promote black business, youth, and health for all Story and Photos by Deborah Lynch dlynch@harrisburgmagazine.com

“I am a believer that anything you want to be or do you can do it. It may take some work, but chase your dream. That’s what happened to me. I’m very passionate about that. If I can do it, anybody can do it, but I think the issue is we have to continue to encourage.” — Richard Utley Richard Utley is still just a boy from Pittsburgh, but dreams to make a difference led him to Harrisburg where he’s been influencing the state and the community ever since. His current projects include the Central PA Black Business Directory, publications on “My War Too, Blacks in WWII,” and the many boards he sits on including those for the Camp Curtin YMCA and Hamilton Health Center. A friend from Pittsburgh who published a black business directory inspired Utley to revive something similar in the 20 HARRISBURG MAGAZINE AUGUST 2021

Harrisburg area more than 10 years ago. He was just finishing out his career as a deputy auditor general for the Commonwealth. He knew business and he knew history. The directory and other community involvement was a natural segue for him after retiring from the Commonwealth. The goal for the directory is twofold — to provide exposure for businesses that do business with the African American community and to include a venue for African Americans to showcase their businesses. The directory also includes articles, usually on history. “I want it to be knowledge,” Utley says because “knowledge is the key. … I’m under the impression there’s a lot of things about us we don’t know about. Therefore, since we don’t know about it, it’s important for me to tell the story. I’m a big believer that we as people of color have to take some ownership on who we are. Other people define that for us.”

The 2020/2021 directory features five articles by noted Harrisburg cultural leader Lenwood Sloan. From 2005-2011, Sloan was director of Pennsylvania’s Cultural and Heritage Tourism Program. He’s currently executive director of the Harrisburg Peace Promenade (International Institute of Peace through Tourism — IIPT), which works to conserve historic and cultural monuments along Harrisburg’s Riverfront Park. The articles include “The Language Used in the Institution of Slavery,” “Deconstructing Dinah,” and “Four Pathways to Freedom” among others. The directory also includes information on the emancipation Proclamation and slavery as well as details about civil rights leaders like Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman. The remainder of the directory lists businesses and ads broken down into categories including attorneys, auto repair, banks, barbers, beauty, consultants, engineering, entertainment, insurance, churches, universities, agencies, and much more. The directory indicates minority- and women-owned businesses. While not comprehensive, the goal is to highlight as many businesses as come to light for the African American community and to fill a void. Utley’s partner on the directory is Marsha Blessing, owner/ publisher/CEO/president of Orison Publishers. They met through a mutual friend and have worked together on the directory, its editorial direction, and sales since its inception. “A good thing to say about Richard is that he is extremely authentic … he is so authentic to his own experience. I think that has been very helpful because he is in no way, shape, or form promoting an agenda,” Blessing said. Blessing said Utley’s gift is passion and in giving solid business advice to help new black-owned businesses avoid becoming a “flash in the pan.” She says it wasn’t popular to publish this type of directory when they started it, but that Utley had a calling. “He’s doing this because of a burden, not because it’s the newest bandwagon to jump on,” she said. Utley runs to — not away from — challenges. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh, where he was a member of the track team and is still a member of the Pitt Varsity Club. He’s on the wall of fame at his former Pittsburgh area high school — Westinghouse High School. Today, he continues to train 22 HARRISBURG MAGAZINE AUGUST 2021

athletes locally on speed and agility. Formerly, he was the head track coach at Steelton-Highspire High School. Perhaps he’s a sprinter in life thanks to his father’s first simple words of advice. “Make sure you graduate from high school in order to provide for yourself.” He wrote in the bio on his directory webpage that “College officials doubted my skills as the Chairman of a nascent campus organization called the Black Action Society, and countless politicos and bureaucrats underestimated my survival skills. Most of my life consisted of clearing the bar of low expectations others set for me.” Clear them, he has. After retiring as one of the highest ranking African Americans in state government, he has continued to leave his mark in Harrisburg. He serves on the United Way Impact

Committee, is a member of the Harrisburg Rotary, and is a CARE Court Mentor (Court-Assisted Re-Entry program) along with his roles on the boards of the Camp Curtin Y and Hamilton Health Center. Understanding that health is a key area where disparity must be addressed, he works to help ensure that Hamilton Health Center is a top-notch healthcare provider for all people. “The things that I look at in my mind is if I want to have an impact in my legacy and life, it is health as well as politics — where we need to go and where we should go,” Utley said. He also sees the importance of mental health and raising up the children of a community, which means he is a daily presence at the Camp Curtin Y. “We are looking at things from a different standpoint now — we’re looking at mental health, we’re looking at educational programs, we’re trying to take the typical YMCA about basketball — which is a great thing — but we also want to prepare our young people for other kinds of careers as well as giving the opportunities and exposures to other things about life that they might not see in the community.” The Camp Curtin YMCA takes area youth on bus tours of colleges; it offers a golf program, a lacrosse program, and

academic camps. It provides that exposure that Utley sees as necessary. In addition to the programs for youth, the Y has distributed meals throughout Covid. Utley also supports Y Director Jamien Harvey’s vision for housing and development, too. The Y is hoping to break ground Aug. 1 on its planned housing development through a partnership called Cornerstone in Uptown Harrisburg at Jefferson and Woodbine streets. The project has been Harvey’s dream-in-progress for the last five years. “The initiative will build singlefamily owner units with sustainable and affordable housing programs to attract new tenants, families, and first-time owners,” according to the YMCA’s website. “We have our environment inside, which is really nice, but we need to expand beyond our walls,” Harvey said, noting the need for a safer community surrounding the Y. “He’s [Utley] been very supportive in that. He’s very involved.” Harvey now is executive director of both the Camp Curtin YMCA and the East Shore YMCA, and is the first African American to lead the latter Y. The vision he and Utley have is to merge the two Ys with youth using Camp Curtin and adults using the downtown East Shore Y. In addition to summer camps focusing on academics, the Camp Curtin Y is also introducing vocational skills to the youth. Harvey said the Y will provide scholarships to 18 to 24-year-olds for vocational development and hopes to have them working on their development site. With Utley by his side, Harvey is poised to put his grand vision in place. “I believe in giving back,” Utley said. “That’s the most important thing to me. … I’ve always believed that I need to give back to the community I serve. I’ve been very fortunate in my career. I just think that’s what I need to do.” Utley gives back with a weekly podcast as well. Listeners can find “Did You Know? Hosted by Richard Utley on Facebook or The Voice 17104. It’s a show about empowerment with political commentary that highlights issues affecting the African American community as well as the positive stories of individuals, and includes guests weekly. Artful Inspirations Around Us

Painter invites viewers to respond to his work Story by Christina Heintzelman

cheintzelman@benchmarkmediallc.com

Art is everything and sometimes simply an essence. It is a tool that I use and that uses me in return. It is my best and most critical friend — but these words mean nothing by themselves … the work – the active process – is what matters most,” says self-trained painter Eric Anfinson, who works from Mockingbird Studio, his homebased studio in Key West, Florida. He is the son of former Harrisburg Magazine co-owner Jerry Anfinson. Anfinson’s journey to Key West from his native home in Minnesota was a long and sometimes arduous journey. At the age of sixteen, during his junior year of high school in Minnesota, he suffered a severe cervical vertebrae injury while playing in a football game. His injury

put him in the hospital/rehab for seven months and left him a high functioning quadriplegic. After graduating high school with his class and attending university, he began a yearlong intensive physical rehab stint in Los Angeles. On the drive back from Los Angeles to Minnesota, he found Boulder, Colorado, which would be his home for 12 years. During this time, Anfinson did creative writing and the occasional motivational speaking gig, but laughingly describes himself as “cringing at the idea that I may come across like Chris Farley doing his “Matt Foley Motivational Speaker” routine on SNL. “It was time well spent, but it wasn’t enough to speak about surviving. I knew there was more I was meant to do,” he said. Serendipitously, he found a figure drawing class in Boulder that he thought he would enjoy. “I couldn’t draw to save my life. But I did realize that the studio was a sacred space and I understood it was something significant. I knew I wanted more; I just didn’t understand what it was yet.” Anfinson was not exposed to art in his early years, saying he grew up in an artistic vacuum. A trip to France in his early 30s and a visit to the Louvre was inspirational, but so overwhelming because he did not understand who the artistic players were or how it could be integrated into his life. It was one step closer to his dive into artistic life. Ojo Caliente, New Mexico: Another vital life experience occurred when a powerful shaman told him, “You and I are the same. We do not get to do what the others do. We do not get to go to the dance. We have a role, a purpose. Once you release the idea of being like them, embrace your role. You will find your path.’’ Anfinson took his words to heart.“This experience in the desert was a shedding of old skin, release of my old self, beliefs, expectations and permission to leave the tribe, stripping away everything familiar. Why is this important to creativity? To art? Because one must be free to observe, act, manifest, expand, explore one’s creative self.”

In 2001 Anfinson left Colorado for Key West, Florida, a wellestablished creative community, and his life changed dramatically. “One day I went to the local art supply store, bought painting supplies, and never felt the need to return to my writing. As soon as the brush touched the canvas I was hooked. I was surprised I could paint because I couldn’t draw.” Later, he would come to understand the difference between drawing and painting from an interview with Chuck Close who described his limitations of drawing ability based on low finger dexterity and how with painting, one uses the entire arm for motion. “It was a relief to me, to understand you paint from your shoulder rather than fingers. The paint brush is an extension to your arm. You connect brain, hand, and heart through the brushstroke,” Anfinson said. After two years of painting in his bedroom-turned-studio in Key West, he was asked to join a professional studio/gallery. He joined, but maintained that “I wanted to remain unduly influenced by another painters’ style. I knew I wanted my art to be of the archetypal and narrative style, and I wanted to work on developing this style in my own way and time.” After he became confident in his own style and ability, he studied other artists like Modigliani, Matisse, and Clemente. “It is important to understand the artistic shoulders we are standing on; it’s important to me to fall in love with great works,” Anfinson said. Anfinson works daily in a beautiful freestanding studio in his garden, affectionately named Mockingbird Studio. Anfinson’s studio is named for the experience he had with a mockingbird that appeared constantly while he was making his decision to be part of his first public group show. In Native symbolism a mockingbird signifies a search for selfexpression, finding one’s muse — finding one’s voice while showing one what ignites and inspires the soul. As soon as he reached the decision to show his painting in public, the mockingbird moved on. “When I ascend the ramp to my studio, I enter my own space and it is a sacred space. Think about going into a sacred space and how your voice immediately goes quiet – this is what happens for me. I am surrounded by beautiful native trees, a little piece of paradise. I am incredibly blessed to be in a totally different reality while painting,” he said. Anfinson says that his role in art is to put his thoughts, feelings, and soul on canvas and get it out in front of the public. The public’s job is to then look at it and take away their own thoughts and feelings. “A piece can

become universal in its appeal because it is authentic. Sometimes through archetypes and sometimes because it's relatable in some way,” he adds. Anfinson works in a stylized study of people. Rather than being strictly portraiture, the figures — although based on many actual people he has met and seen — retain a dreamlike presence. Earlier works were either faceless or had eyes that were vague. This allowed viewers to move into that painting, becoming one with it and understanding another part of their internal being often through the position of the character in the painting or other symbolic parts of the painting. “My paintings are observational,” Anfinson said, explaining that “I feel that too many times artists use people as a prop rather than projecting them as true spiritually alive people. I desire to project the innermost self because I am intrigued by what they have to say. I want to portray the story and the meaning behind it.” Currently Anfinson is working in studies of people who have clear, definite eyes that would almost seem to investigate the very soul of the viewer. It is as if the painting is asking the viewer to look inward to understand his or her own story. These paintings are either in brilliant, contrasting colors that are alive and vibrant or in softer hues that tend toward a meditative quality. It is about the story you can take away from each one that you view. On the question of inspiration, Anfinson has a very definite opinion. “As others have said, ‘Inspiration is for amateurs,’ ” adding “inspiration is perhaps only 10 percent of the artistic process, a very important aspect of course, however, the rest is what occurs while working. The longer you do it this way, the more your work is genuine and authentic. Inspiration will appear as you work.” “I don’t trust a painting that is too realistic,” he continued. “I respect the ability to render such images, but find it impossible to truly love something that is perfect – all the oxygen leaves. For me, great art is vulnerable. My favorite artists allow their so-called flaws to provide a path to your heart.” Anfinson’s work is in collections throughout the United States and Europe. His commissioned pieces are in private homes and many public buildings. His art has been in solo shows and group exhibits since 2005. Anfinson can be reached through his website ericanfinson.com and his Facebook page Eric Anfinson. He is also represented by Gingerbread Square Gallery in Key West. 7 HARRISBURG MAGAZINE AUGUST 2021 27

alking into Bellia’s Pizza at 2256 Linglestown Road in the Blue Mountain Commons is a feast for the eyes. The glass-topped, two-shelved display case is filled with the multiple colors and designs of pizza creations featuring unusual toppings like crispy onion rings, mango, cheeseburger, and much more. Of course, Bellia’s serves up the familiar pies like pepperoni, veggie lovers, and meat lovers, too, but these pizza artists also offer so much more. With veggies, meats, fruits, cheeses, and sauces layered extravagantly across pizzas lining the shelves, it would be hard not to find one that appeals. The Bellia family opened their first shop in the United States during the height of the pandemic — Feb. 4, 2021, after working together at Marco’s Pizza in York for many years. Bellia’s is a whole family affair led by father Vito, mother Antonella, and sons, Angelo and Kevin, all of whom are on their second stint from Sicily living in the United States. Yes, that’s right, Kevin. He’s named for Kevin from Home Alone, a favorite family movie. Although Angelo is the owner on paper for Bellia’s, he says that “honestly, I don’t feel like I’m the owner because everyone is the owner.” They all work at the restaurant with Angelo and Kevin cooking alongside Vito, the pizza wizard, and Antonella, who makes the tiramisu. Angelo had considered moving to New York state to work with his girlfriend’s father in construction during the pandemic. His family 28 HARRISBURG MAGAZINE AUGUST 2021

didn’t want him to go, so they sat down and talked: Go back to family in Italy or find a pizza shop. They found a pizza shop, a former JoJo’s Pizzeria that needed the Bellia touch to lighten it up. That first month in February was really rough. “The first month was really the worst,” Angelo said. “I was crying, crying, crying. I was really scared. All the money we saved working six days a week, 12 hours a day, saving for our future. “Step by step, people get to know us and give us a try. With the first review, I was really happy. Really, really happy. The best advertising is that one — people that talk with the family and come here and try us,” he said, adding that now the restaurant is doing good business. Vito Bellia worked for more than 17 years in a mozzarella cheese factory in Sicily. When the factory closed, he came to the United States because the economy was bad at that time in Sicily. He was the first in the family to come to the U.S. the second time, eight years ago. Kevin followed, then Angelo and finally Antonella. Father and sons spent several years working at La Primavera in Lewisburg, PA, with neighbors from Sicily. Eventually, they moved on to Marco’s in York, where Vito Lo Duca, also from Sicily, had opened a big new shop. Lo Duca has supported the Bellia’s in their new venture, too. The family has learned from their restaurant

experiences that quality is what will help them stand apart in a crowded pizza/sub/pasta business. “The quality I have, that’s the value,” Angelo said, noting that he also offers lower prices than many places and customers can expect a crazy clean environment. “We give a lot of attention to the customer,” he said, noting that they offer free samples to customers knowing they will win them over. “You can always hear my dad screaming out, ‘Good morning,’ ” Angelo said, adding that the customers are “going to feel like home.” Bellia’s offers their own delivery service and takeout as well as dine-in options. They will also cater events, and just started working with offices at the state Capitol. Of course, pizza is the crowd favorite at Bellia’s, but they offer many salad, sub, sandwich, wrap, stromboli, calzone, boat, and pasta offerings as well. 7

Harrisburg Magazine staff reviews Bellia’s Pizza “Everything that Bellia's provided was something that I have had before, but not from their restaurant. However, the way that they displayed the food was very cool and their bread on the hoagie was amazingly soft. I also liked the baked ziti, which had a very flavorful creamy sauce that was really nice. Overall I would eat there on a regular basis. They have a nice assortment of dishes for everyone.” — Laura Reich, Graphic Designer “I had their pizza before and it was always good. I love the atmosphere and the super friendly staff. They always welcome their guests and make them feel at home. I liked the baked ziti we sampled because the sauce was flavorful with a nice taste of tomato and creamy ricotta cheese. It had a nice balance — not too rich or heavy — and was just great comfort food. It’s a great place for lunch.” — Mike Jurosky, Account Executive “My favorite was the spaghetti with chicken parmigiana. The chicken had been pounded very flat and was crispy and tender. The sauce was flavorful, but not overwhelming, which allowed the various flavors to come through. The turkey cheese spinach wrap was well-stocked with turkey and cheese, and the wrap itself had enough body to it that it wasn’t soggy or gummy. It may have been one of the most flavorful wraps I’ve ever had.” — Christina Heintzelman, Operations Director “Bellia’s was excellent. My favorite was the chicken parmesan and the sauce was so tasty. The salad was full of meat, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, and olives. I will visit this restaurant again.” — Jo Ann Shover, Account Executive “I’ve never eaten at Bellia’s before, and it was definitely above and beyond a standard pizzeria. The baked ziti was by far the best dish. The sauce was on point with freshness and acidity and the pasta was cooked to al dente perfection to stand up to the sauce. The chicken parmesan was underwhelming. The chicken was a little too drenched in sauce and cheese. Overall, Bellia’s is a solid restaurant — a down-the-street feel with a home-cooked taste.” — Don Bair, Account Executive “All of the food was good — and while all of it fit with the standard fare from local pizzerias, a look at their menu and a trip to the restaurant show a dazzling array of delicious options. Bellia’s offers fluffy bread for standard subs, a hearty chef’s salad with pinwheels of ham and cheese, and cheesy pasta dishes.” — Deborah Lynch, Editor 7

Demons and spice mingle at JB Lovedraft’s

elcome to a darkside filled with a side of protein. That’s what diners will find at both JB Lovedraft’s MicroPub at 225 N 2nd St. in Harrisburg and at the new JB Lovedraft’s Brewery at 165 Gateway Dr. in Mechanicsburg scheduled to open Aug. 7. The downtown pub, which opened in 2016, specializes in burgers. Some Justin Browning, owner, and Joshua Stambaugh, of that menu will carry over to the manager at JB Lovedraft's new brewery, but the brewery will specialize as a smokehouse — that means even more meat. The darkside? Well, all one has to do is to open the website or drive to the front of one of the JB Lovedraft’s locations to see the skeleton logo that represents the brand. A walk inside reveals walls of murals dedicated to the bony Mr. Lovedraft and other references to horror, science fiction, dungeon and dragons, demonology, and more. It’s definitely a walk on the wild side, which is exactly what owner Justin Browning intended. Of course, he’s excited to be brewing his own beer at the new location, but he’s equally excited to have a 290-person capacity that The Basic Bitch burger will allow him to bring in national touring and local metal and hardcore bands for which he says no local venues currently exist. “Most venues seem to shy away from it,” Browning said. His manager Joshua Stambaugh used to perform vocals for a death metal band, so he is 100 percent behind this new venture for JB Lovedraft’s. The new brewery, located in a former Quaker State & Lube just off the Carlisle Pike, has undergone extensive renovations since last December including the painting of elaborate wall murals by a group of six or seven Philadelphia graffiti artists — Browning says most graffiti artists protect their identities behind hashtags like Spiderdigits, one of Tater Tots their artists. The murals show Mr. Lovedraft in a variety of settings. Browning noted that everyone at Lovedraft’s has a good time making up Mr. Lovedraft’s backstory — “he’s a magician, a conjurer, a musician, he likes to dance …” Developing a brewery requires a good brewer, and that’s where Browning’s friend Terry Hawbaker comes in. Formerly the head brewer at Pizza Boy with more than 28 years of brewing experience, Hawbaker is great at all beer styles and “makes literally everything,” Browning said of the beer selection. “Personally, I love his sours,” Stambaugh added. The Whiskey BBQ Burger Both locations will carry the signature 30 HARRISBURG MAGAZINE AUGUST 2021

brews with 24 lines on tap in Mechanicsburg, and 42 taps downtown, where Browning said despite expanding from the first floor to the second and third floors, the pub still outgrew its space. Lovedraft’s has always specialized in craft and microbrews, but now the brewery “gives us our chance to throw our hat in the ring,” he said. The new location shouldn’t take away from the downtown location, which has its regulars and more foot traffic. “It’s a niche bar that caters to an alternative crowd,” Browning said. The smokehouse menu at the brewery will be created by pitmaster Chris Heilig, formerly of Shakedown BBQ in Grantville and Sandwiches by Shakedown in the Broad Street Market. The burgers everyone loves at the original JB Lovedraft’s downtown were created by Michael Vito Costanzo, who runs the Lovedraft’s food truck now. Since most of the staff loves spicy food, that is reflected in the menu, sticking with “what is palatable, cajun and creole, and sticks with the backstory of our character,” he said of the names. Those burger names include Basic Bitch, The Lovedraft, Whiskey BBQ, Dillzburger, Beelzeburger, Boba Fetta, Raging Bullwinkle, Brinner, and Ifrit. Other sandwiches including black bean burger, chicken, and pulled pork are offered along with fries, thai slaw, side salad, and tater tots. 7

Harrisburg Magazine staff reviews of JB Lovedraft’s “I had no idea what an Ifrit was, but the burger version was loaded with flavors. Yikes! I just Googled Ifrit to discover that it is a powerful demon associated with the underworld and the dead, whose signature attack is hellfire. OK. I get it. This was a spicy burger, but really not so crazy spicy that my mouth was on fire — just pleasantly spicy. I loved the mango habanero chutney and the Sriracha cream cheese. The burger was cooked a little more than I prefer mine, but it was a quality beef patty.” — Deb Lynch, Editor “I had the Whiskey BBQ Burger and it was great! I think the best part about it was that it was so big — I mean the burger patty was huge. I have had whiskey burgers before, not from here, and they normally are pretty good, but I really liked that their bbq sauce had some spice to it because it really just blended everything together.” — Laura Reich, Graphic Designer “The first thing I noticed when I bit into the Basic Bitch burger was the flavor of the meat. It was a large burger, but juicy and flavorful without being over-seasoned. I could taste the meat flavor as it stood on its own. The lettuce, tomato, and onion were fresh and crisp. The brioche bun was soft and handled the massive burger. My fries were crisp and flavorful — not greasy at all. This was my first time eating here and I would definitely recommend it for a great burger.” — Mike Jurosky, Account Executive “The Cuban Pulled Pork did not disappoint. The sandwich was piled high with pork and a special mustard sauce dressing, which was so good. The pickles added a nice touch to the sandwich. The fries and tater tots were crisp and very tasty. J.B. Lovedraft’s went above and beyond for Harrisburg Magazine. Go try them out this weekend.” — Jo Ann Shover, Account Executive “I tried the Beelzeburger. It had a scorpion pepper relish on it. This is not for the faint of heart. If you don’t like spicy food do not attempt to eat this. If you’re like me, this burger will satisfy every spicy taste bud you have. This is elite bar food that you can enjoy — truly enjoy, whether it is for dinner or if you choose to stay for a few drinks late into the night. We were graced with perfect crisp tater tots - the golden boy of the tater tot family. Light and fluffy onion rings with a crunch, and traditional boardwalk fries with lots of salt. Overall they have something to cater to everyone’s desire. I highly recommend trying JB Lovedraft's — even stepping out of your taste profile and trying something new.” — Don Bair, Account Executive “I just had one of the best burgers ever, the Boba Fetta burger. It had to be close to a half-pound of ground beef done perfectly (for my taste) to a touch between medium and medium rare. The meat was seasoned only slightly so it was still possible to taste the grilled goodness of the meat. The burger was topped with spinach, tomato, onion, feta, and tzatziki sauce, a perfect mix of yogurt, cucumber, and dill to create a tangy flavor which paired nicely with the feta. A total flavor explosion.” — Christina Heintzelman, Operations Director 7

How to make the Lovedraft Burger Take an 8-ounce patty seasoned with JB Lovedraft’s signature proprietary blend of herbs and spices (home cooks will have to come up with their own mixture), and cook to perfection. Smother in seasoned and sauteed mushrooms and onion, along with thick-cut bacon. Top with American cheese, lettuce, tomato, and finish with a sunnyside-up egg. Serve on a golden toasted brioche roll.
