TO THE BEATLES SHREK THE MUSICA THE BIG STAGE
Big on spectacle and known to all—shows for young and old! A celebration of four young lads from Liverpool; the marriage of drum, brass, and the halftime show; and a delightfully green ogre, introduced first in film and now on stage.
DRUMLINE LIVE
Shrek The Musical
“DRUMLINE LIVE… could very well outstomp Stomp and out-blast Blast” (NewsSun). Created by Don Roberts, executive consultant for the 20th Century Fox hit movie Drumline, DRUMLINE LIVE is a marching band extravaganza that parades out of the football stadium and onto the stage with explosive percussion, resounding brass, and dazzling choreography. The drumline tradition began over fifty years ago; as an art form, it has since grown into a genre all its own, featuring characteristic high stepping, funky dance rhythms, and exciting musical repertoire ranging from classical to Top 40.
Based on the Academy Award-winning film that started it all, Shrek The Musical brings the hilarious story of everyone’s favorite ogre to life on stage at Three Stages. During its Broadway run, it played over 500 performances and garnered eight 2009 Tony Award nominations. Part romance, part twisted fairy tale, and entirely irreverent fun for the whole family, the musical boasts a terrific score, big laughs, great dancing, and breathtaking scenery. “It is difficult to know where to begin praising this sparkling production. Every element of an outstanding musical is found in abundance here” (Fort Worth Star-Telegram). Sponsored by Wells Fargo.

In The Footsteps Of Django
Imperial Silence: Una Ópera Muerta
Django Reinhardt introduced a passionate style of Gypsy Jazz guitar that was astonishing in the 1930’s and is still revered today. The show brings together the best of the new Gypsy Jazz masters of Europe: Lulo Reinhardt, a third generation master, whose Latin Swing Project combines Gypsy Jazz with Latin rhythms; Les Doigts de l’Homme, France’s leading contemporary Gypsy Jazz ensemble, and, on her first American tour, Norig Gadji, a French singer with a Celtic name and Catalan roots. Sponsored by Capital Public Radio.
A cutting-edge “dead” opera in four acts. Rooted in the ancient satirical tradition of the Days of the Dead, in which the dead buffoon and laugh at the hubris of the living, Imperial Silence is a new media opera that examines cultural taboos around silence and death. Directed by Guggenheim Fellow John Jota Leaños, this bilingual performance fuses dark humored animation with a live Mariachi quartet, three modern folklórico dancers, and the music of hip hop, bossa nova, and blues— all with the objective of producing a critical, socially pertinent, and funny work of art.

The 32-year-old singer has become a leading exponent of fado—the poetic, deeply expressive idiom which personifies the Portuguese psyche. As with blues and country music in the US, or tango in Argentina, or samba in Brazil, fado has evolved from humble origins to win broad appeal. “It needs no translation,” Ms. Moura says simply. “It is music that exposes every vocal nuance, and Ms. Moura had nothing to hide. A Tribute To Jimmy Reed
Returning on the heels of last year’s soldout performance, IGN gathers the world’s finest guitarists/composers on one stage. The world’s foremost exponent of solo jazz guitar, Martin Taylor is described as “The acoustic guitarist of his generation” (Acoustic Guitar Magazine) and “something to behold” (Washington Post). “Martin Taylor is one of the most awesome solo guitar players in the history of the instrument. He’s unbelievable” (Pat Metheny). Joining him are Solorazaf from Madagascar, who mixes voice with foot percussion to form a one-man band—“simply superb & magnificent” (Afropop Worldwide), and Guinga, one of Brazil’s foremost guitarists, and IGN founder Brian Gore.
“If you only ever see flamenco once in your life, make it this!” (The Independent, London). Paco Peña embodies both authenticity and innovation in flamenco; he is one of the few practitioners who has transformed how this archetypal Spanish art form is perceived. Named “Best Flamenco Guitarist of the Year” five years in a row by Guitar magazine, “Mr. Peña is a virtuoso, capable of dazzling an audience beyond the frets of mortal man. He combines rapid-fire flourishes with a colourist’s sense of shading; this listener cannot recall hearing any guitarist with a more assured mastery of his instrument” (New York Times). He will perform with his sextet and three dancers.
Mark Hummel and his band are joined by an all-star harmonica lineup: Lazy Lester (worked with Slim Harpo and Lightnin’ Slim), Rick Estrin (Little Charlie & The Nightcats), Grammynominee Kenny Neal, Kim Wilson (The Fabulous Thunderbirds), and guitarists Charlie Baty (in a rare reunion with his Little Charlie colleague Estrin) and Joe Louis Walker (worked with John Lee Hooker, Muddy Water, Jimi Hendrix, and more), all paying tribute to Jimmy Reed. Returning to Three Stages by popular demand, the renowned Aquila Theater—“a classically trained, modernly hip troupe” (New York Times)—offers two plays: Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew and Rostand’s Cyrano de Bergerac. Founded in 1991, the company’s mission is to bring the greatest theatrical works to the greatest number, touring internationally to broad acclaim. “Aquila’s productions are beautifully spoken, dramatically revealing, and crystalline in effect” (The New Yorker).
In 2011, the Three Stages’ audience delighted to Universe of Dreams, Ensemble Galilei’s presentation of poetry, music, and images from the Hubble Space Telescope. Returning now with actors Bill Pullman (Independence Day, While You Were Sleeping, Too Big To Fail) and Lily Knight (Changeling, Boston Legal), the subject turns to great American photographs (Evans, Stieglitz and more), as culled from the extensive collection housed in the MMA. Accompanying these moving images are readings from some of America’s finest writers (Hughes, Muir, and more), and evocative music by Ensemble Galilei (“they play with energy, splendid ensemble, good humor and imagination,” Washington Post)— with performances from Bach to Celtic and back. Hailed as “the dean of Latin jazz” and “one of the world’s great virtuosic pianists” (New York Times), five-time Grammy Award winner Chucho Valdés has recorded over 80 CDs during his illustrious career, performing with countless jazz masters including Herbie Hancock, Dizzy Gillespie, Wynton Marsalis, and Chick Corea. Founder of the rhythmically innovative Latin jazz band Irakere, Valdés has appeared on the distinguished stages of Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center, and The Hollywood Bowl.
The first thing to be noticed is her voice. Madeleine Peyroux was quickly crowned with the neo-Billie Holiday label, but her earliest influence was Bessie Smith. Neither a show-off stylist nor a laid back crooner, her latest CD includes songs co-written with former Rolling Stone Bill Wyman; she sits very comfortably between folk music and jazz. “She sings as elegantly as Peggy Lee and writes with the downbeat clarity of Leonard Cohen” (Mojo). Opening the concert is Rebecca Pidgeon, a singer-songwriter both “nuanced and assured” (Rolling Stone) and whose dual career as an actor includes several featured roles in husband David Mamet’s movies (The Spanish Prisoner, Heist). ALFRED HITCHCOCK’S THE 39 STEPS
NUNSET BOULEVARD
PENZANCE THE 39 OULEVARD GILBER JUST PLAIN FUN
There’s nothing quite like a good laugh in a dark theater.
Here’s three purveyors of just plain fun: one that champions a beloved tradition, one informed by a genius filmmaker who specialized in a good scare, and one burgeoning musical franchise — built around Catholic nuns!
Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps
Nunset Boulevard
A “gleefully theatrical riff on the film… fast and frothy…theater at its finest” (New York Times). This Hitchcock classic features 150 characters played by four actors, often executing their costume and set changes in front of the live audience. A three year run on Broadway and two Tony Awards later, The 39 Steps comes to Three Stages for its first extended run in the capital region. A bored pretty boy brings home a gorgeous spy; she is murdered in his flat and the mystery story is set in motion. “The great fun of The 39 Steps is its invention” (City Beat). Sponsored by Comstock Mortgage.
“The ‘nuns’ have done it again…sinfully funny laughs” (NBC News). This latest installment in the well-loved series of Nunsense musicals features the popular star of Laverne & Shirley. The Sisters are on their way to perform at the Hollywood Bowl, or so they believe. Alas, it’s actually the Hollywood Bowl-ARama. But wait! They learn of auditions for a new musical about Dolores Hart, the famous movie star who kissed Elvis and then became a nun! Will this be their big break? “Hilarious, wacky, and unpredictable!” (ABC News).

Four performances celebrating the time that was. A multi-media concert providing a birds-eye view of the 60’s, and three performances dedicated to a more innocent side of the era’s musical culture.
The Righteous Brothers’ Bill Medley The Righteous Brothers can rightfully claim to have fathered “blue-eyed soul.” And Bill Medley’s voice—raw and emotional—is a virtual trademark in popular music. A fixture on Top Forty radio (“You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin,” “Unchained Melody,” and more), the Righteous Brothers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003. “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life,” in which Medley joined Jennifer Warnes, won an Oscar, a Golden Globe, Video of The Year, and a Grammy. In 2007, Rolling Stone said of Medley’s CD Damn Near Righteous that “this gritty singer has delivered his finest solo album and the best thing he’s done since the Sixties, period.” Fri, June 7, 2013; 8 pm $39-$55, Premium $65
Ricky Nelson Remembered and The Four Preps Ricky Nelson placed 53 songs on the Billboard Hot 100—including, at age 17, the very first #1 song when the chart was created in 1957. He attended Hollywood High School, where the original members of The Four Preps were classmates; Nelson and The Four Preps kicked off a national tour—their first—the very week that Nelson’s picture was on the cover of LIFE magazine. In Ricky Nelson Remembered, Nelson’s twin sons perform their father’s songs (“Hello Mary Lou,” “Garden Party” and more), with The Four Preps (“26 Miles (Santa Catalina)”) opening the evening. The Songs of Johnny Mercer
The classic songs, intricate rhythms, and exquisite arrangements that defined one of the first (and most successful) female singer-songwriters are here elegantly portrayed in a loving homage. Created with seasoned jazz master Jon Weber, Stacy Sullivan captures Peggy Lee’s rise from a tragic childhood on the plains of North Dakota to the elite company of legends. “She embraces a room and reveals herself with a sincerity every other singer could learn from... a beautiful voice, a refreshing treat, unblemished and tender”(Backstage).
The best plays on Broadway come together on one stage for one evening. Take four Broadway stars—some of the leading talent in New York today; veterans of Wicked, CATS, Falsettos, Singin’ In The Rain and the like. Put them onstage together where they mix it up with each other, and with a live trio. Hand them a song list that includes music from West Side Story, Hair, The Lion King, Ragtime, Chicago, Billy Elliot, Wicked, Mamma Mia! and then some. Featuring Jason Graae, Jessica Hendy, David Burnham and Christina Saffran. Fri, Dec 7; 8 pm $29-$39, Premium $49

LAKE COLL FOLSOM LAKE COLLEGE
A LITTLE HISTORY The search by the Los Rios Community College District for an exceptional high-tech educational facility began in 1964, but it wasn’t until 1997, when state outlay funds became available, that construction of the current Folsom Lake College facilities was undertaken. Folsom Lake College received initial accreditation in 2004. Today, Folsom Lake College operates at three sites. The growth in enrollment, personnel, facilities, services, and education programs has been explosive, as evidenced by the opening of Three Stages at Folsom Lake College, as well as by its broad educational offerings in the sciences, humanities, technology, and the arts. The college has cultivated a reputation for unequaled dedication, unparalleled service, and a passionate pursuit of excellence that is respected by its colleagues in higher education, appreciated by its business partners, supported by its students, and energized and fueled by its staff.

DONORS M THREE FOR DONORS MAKE THE DIFFERENCE
THE ARTS!
As we begin our second season of performing arts at Three Stages, so much of the news is good. Performances have been well received, ticket sales are strong, childen are coming by bus to experience the magic of the arts during the day, and our community partners and the college’s educational programs are thriving in their new home. In general, Three Stages has nestled comfortably into the daily life of the region. Thank you for your generous and enthusiastic support. But while attendance of Three Stages has been excellent, ticket sales are but one side of the coin. As is common in the arts, relying on sales alone will not allow Three Stages to reach its full potential, to be all that it can be for this community. Support to open the center was generous, coming from state and local bond measures, and many donations from both individuals and businesses — but it must continue, and grow, for Three Stages to evolve and thrive. To support the dream of a vibrant regional arts center for this community, please consider deepening your involvement with Three Stages through an annual donation or the naming of a seat (for you, or honoring someone you love). Other opportunities to support Three Stages are available. Each donation makes a difference and is tax deductible — and formal benefits grow at each level of giving. For more information, visit ThreeStages.net, or e-mail Kristin.Haas@flc.losrios.edu, or call 916-608-6705.
