Can you tell fact from fiction? Writers tell lies for a living, but how well can they spin a tale to a live audience? Here’s a chance to pit the strength of your inner-lie-detector against a line-up of Christopher Brookmyre, Laura Lippman, Stuart MacBride, Val McDermid, Denise Mina and Martyn Waites. The panel will reveal secrets about themselves and their work, and it is your job to catch them out in a falsehood. But be warned: if you think they’re telling porkies, and you turn out to be wrong, you will have to pay a forfeit of £1. If you are right, the liar will have to cough up £5! Remember, truth is often far stranger than fiction... Chaired by Grand Inquisitor Mark Billingham, Secrets and Lies is surreal, anarchic, and very, very funny. This is an unmissable opportunity to see two of the creative masterminds behind the critically acclaimed American TV drama share the inside track on the off-screen story. A slowburning television phenomenon, The Wire aired for the first time in 2002 on US cable channel HBO, and ran for over 60 episodes until its final episode in March 2008. Praised for its realistic portrayal of urban life and challenging exploration of social and political issues, The Wire has become one of the first ‘sleeper’ television dramas, having found a wider audience, greater plaudits and an ever-increasing amount of international attention since going off air via the series DVD releases and through simple word of mouth. If you want to catch up before you come, then tune into BBC2 who are currently giving the show its first UK terrestrial screening.

Education Programmes
Big Read
Leeds Met Little Read
In partnership with
The Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival is hugely proud of our partnership with Leeds Metropolitan University, which enables us to develop and continue our education programmes. • Reader In Residence Award-winning author Ann Cleeves has been representing the Festival’s reading audience since 2003. Her work in the role has included running CSI-style workshops in schools and community centres, staging events in libraries and rural pubs, and running the Readers’ Book Group event at the Festival in July – a chance for crime readers, not just writers, to have their voices heard.
The Big Sleep New for 2009 is the Theakstons Old Peculier Big Read in partnership with Penguin Books. The book chosen for 2009 is The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler. The novel that defined the hard-boiled school of crime writing and introduced the world to iconic detective Philip Marlowe celebrates seventy years since the date of its first publication this year. Harrogate Big Readers Libraries across Harrogate and district are hosting special Big Readers Book Group events lead by modern day crime author and Chandler buff Martyn Waites. Look out for free copies of The Big Sleep turning up in locations across Harrogate – keep an eye on the website www.harrogate-festival.org.uk/crime to discover which shops, cafes, libraries, bars and stations Marlowe will be staking out this summer.
• Kids, Spies and Private Eyes The support of Leeds Met has been invaluable in allowing the Festival to take literary workshops to schools in Harrogate district, particularly to rural areas where such opportunities are scarce. Our schools workshop programme Kids, Spies and Private Eyes combines talks and practical writing workshops from leading children’s authors with the opportunity for young people to investigate a crime scene, interpret clues and solve a mystery. • Creative Thursday Leeds Met’s commitment to our outreach and education programmes ensures the Festival continues to support aspiring writers through our annual day-long programme of creative writing workshops, delivered by leading authors and industry professionals.
The Big Sleep Mixer Friday 24 July, 6.30pm. Henry’s Bar, the Crown Hotel. Share your love of this year’s Big Read book at the Festival with other like minded souls. Author Martyn Waites will be hosting an informal session in the bar at which readers can share their love (or hate!) of Chandler’s best known novel.
The Famous Five: Five on a Treasure Island Young people can get reading along with the Festival with one of the best adventures around, the first in Enid Blyton’s timeless Famous Five series, Five on a Treasure Island. Take part in the Little Read this summer by reading about the escapades of Julian, Dick, George, Anne and Timothy the dog as they unlock the secrets of the mysterious Kirrin Island. Little Read Events Read it with your school or family and then come along to some Little Read Famous Five inspired events which will be taking place from 3 - 24 July at the Harrogate International Festival Box Office on the Victoria Shopping Centre Piazza, opposite the train station. Activites will include treasure trails, learning outdoor survival skills, storytelling sessions, and a picnic day bring your own lashings of ginger beer! Children taking part in Little Read activities must bring an adult – so it’s a great opportunity for parents and carers to re-live their own youth with the mystery-solving fivesome! For event details, dates and times, visit: www.harrogate-festival.org.uk/crime
Schools Schools can request a Little Read activity pack, filled with fun ideas based around the Five’s exploits, and perfect for end of term activities. Call 01423 562 303 or email crime@harrogate-festival.org.uk to reserve a pack.
