Living Meaningfully: Civility, Technology and Beauty
Voted number six in the ‘Top 100 Things to do in the World’ by GQ magazine, Berwins Salon North is a relaxed, social evening, where you’re guaranteed to learn something new about yourself and the world around you.
With big ideas in inmate spaces, this cabaret-style evening will enlighten, entertain and excite your curiosity. Showcasing the most smulang ideas in science, technology, psychology and the arts, each scinllang speaker has the challenge of engaging their audience within a 25-minute set, interspersed with intervals where you can chat, get a book from the speaker, or grab a drink at the bar.
At our first Berwins Salon North of the 2025 season, Oliver Burkeman, Dr Alex Box and Professor Louise Mullany each explore ‘Living Meaningfully’ from different, yet interconnected perspecves, shedding light on how we can embrace the realies of the modern world to create lives that resonate.
Oliver Burkeman takes us on a liberang journey towards a more meaningful life – one that begins not with fantasies of the ideal existence, but with the reality in which we actually find ourselves. Addressing the fundamental quesons about how to live, Oliver offers a powerful new way to take acon on what counts: a guiding philosophy of life that he calls ‘imperfeconism’.
Dr Alex Box is a visionary arst and pioneer of Beauty Futurism, redefining creavity in make-up, beauty and identy. Blending art, science and technology, Dr Alex Box is a leader in exploring how technology shapes identy across digital and physical worlds. She has contributed and collaborated with the art and fashion magazine King Kong, Chanel, Lady Gaga, and Google.
For years, Professor Louise Mullany has been examining the prevalence and power of politeness in our everyday speech and acons and discovering what this says about us. Are politeness standards really declining? Are women really more polite than men? What is the best way to apologise? Politeness rules our day-to-day lives, whether it’s speaking to colleagues about issues at work, dealing with difficult family members or wondering if you should eat the last piece of pie.
Our trio of speakers will be brought together by our guest host, Magic FM’s bookworm, Natasha Knight
