Welcome music | literature | arts | fringe | culture

Welcome,

Embrace

the

Festival

Spirit!

In our ever-changing times - the uncertainty of the economy, the upheaval of political change – there’s one thing that will always endure: the arts - music, film, theatre, story telling. Voices from the past and present tap into something deep in our make-up; the arts are hardwired into our DNA. The Harrogate International Festival is a celebration of the very best of those voices. For over 40 years our Festival has been centred on great classical music. Celebrating the Presidency of Dame Fanny Waterman DBE, you can expect an elite pantheon of pianists, including the man hailed as a ‘modern-day Horowitz’, Arcadi Volodos, and winner of the 2009 prestigious Leeds International Piano Competition, Sofya Gulyak. The Festival is also about embracing the new, emerging talents of tomorrow with our celebrated Young Musicians series. It’s about pushing boundaries and engaging new audiences. This year we’re incorporating more literary events, featuring Alan Bennett, Ian Rankin and Joanne Harris. What’s more, we’re flirting with the outskirts of the mainstream thanks to our burgeoning Fringe Festival. Like a Russian doll, the Festival offers you the unfolding delights of music, literature, film and theatre – uncover treasure within treasure. Do something incredible. If you’re a regular Festival goer, welcome. And if you haven’t yet experienced the Festival, do something different this summer. Go on, take the plunge. Lecture: A time machine from 1781 - An afternoon with a square piano British pianist and BBC broadcaster David Owen Norris has an international solo career that has taken him from Munich, America, Vienna, Australia and now... Harrogate!

Mon 19 July Crown Hotel | 2.30pm Tickets: £10 Unreserved

The square piano, invented in London in 1766 by the Saxon immigrant Johannes Zumpe, was a run-away commercial success, dominating the market in England and France for decades. The details of its easily-visible mechanism are fascinating. So too are the resourceful ways in which it was exploited by the composers of the time, including such great names as Bach and Mozart. Spend an afternoon in David’s company as the Gilmore award-winning artist tunes, plays, displays, talks and sings in praise of the piano. After discussing and demonstrating the mechanism, the music, musicians and the migrants, David will end with a performance of songs, poems and diary extracts that together present a picture of 1780’s England.

Another chance to experience the inner vitality and emotional drama of the Endellion String Quartet as they play a programme featuring pieces from Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. The quartet has the exquisite ability to capture the lyricism and poetry in scores that are extraordinarily expressive and are renowned for their chemistry and intensity.

Find the Rhythm Tonight!

Tickets: £10 Unreserved British pianist and BBC broadcaster David Owen Norris has an international solo career that has taken him from Munich, America, Vienna, Australia and now... Harrogate!

Fri 23 July Royal Hall | 2.30pm Tickets: Grand Hall £8 Composer, pianist, performer, arranger and educator, Alex Wilson is one of the UK’s leading Latin music producers. Wilson will discuss his work with salsa music, while an experienced salsa dancer and instructor, Lee Knights, gives a dance demonstration and masterclass. Mendelssohn and Mahler

Tickets: £8 Unreserved

Music historian and award-winning novelist Norman Lebrecht offers a radical interpretation on the Jewish nature of Felix Mendelssohn and Gustav Mahler. Mahler converted to Christianity to become head of the Vienna Opera, but always sought to explain his peculiar identity. ‘I am three times homeless,’ said Mahler, ‘as a Czech among Austrians, an Austrian among Germans and a Jew anywhere in the world.’ Mendelssohn left his Jewish roots, composing the wedding march and partnering Queen Victoria at the piano. Hear Lebrecht argue how his active suppression of his Jewish heritage is inherent to his tragedy.

Chopin and the Birth of Musical Genius

Thur 29 July Royal Hall | 2.30pm Tickets: £8 Unreserved

In this 200th anniversary year of Chopin’s birth, Professor John Rink will talk about the life and work of the composer. A Professor of Music at Cambridge University, Rink is an expert in the history, theory and performance practice of 19th-century music. How did Chopin create some of the greatest masterpieces in the piano literature? This illustrated talk begins with a tour of his pianos, where his musical ideas were initially conceived and fully developed. It then looks at Chopin’s compositional process and the different types of score that he produced over time, including sketches, abandoned manuscripts, fair copies intended for use by publishers, and copies presented to friends as keepsakes. The multiple first editions and the autograph glosses in the scores used by Chopin’s students are also discussed, prior to a final consideration of the fate of Chopin’s music after his death. This survey challenges any assumptions we might have about the identity and stability of the Chopin work, while allowing us to celebrate one of the richest musical imaginations the world has ever known.

Once banned and seldom screened, the 1926 Russian film is the thrilling story of Jewish gangsters embroiled in a Bolshevik trap during the Russian Revolution. Following sell-out successes in London and Paris, this is a rare chance to see eight of the UK’s finest klezmer musicians on piano, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, tuba, violin and drums. Experience a dazzling combination of Yiddish folk, classical Russian influences, klezmer and Eastern jazz.

Summerfestival Community& Education music | literature | arts | fringe | culture

Since 2005, Harrogate International Festivals has worked with over 6,000 disadvantaged young people. We believe that music and the arts have the power to change lives and empower young people. Our projects take place across the Harrogate District, including Ripon, Nidderdale and Boroughbridge. By working in harmony with schools, youth workers, Extended Schools Services and a range of other partners, we aim to enrich the lives of young people in all areas of the district. Musical Mums is a weekly singing group for teenage mums and babies that allows early years to access the beneďŹ ts of music from a very early age, and offers relaxing, fun social time for young mothers. The project is now in its third year, and will soon be developing a new group in Catterick.

Our longstanding world music programme, Global Villages, has brought international cultures to children in rural North Yorkshire, ranging from Indian classical music to Brazilian samba drumming and everything in between! This touring half term project aims to teach young people about world cultures through funky rhythms and unusual instruments. Divas & DJs is an urban music project that offers participants the chance to be a rock star! Young people can write their own songs, play instruments, DJ, MC, dance, mix computer music tracks and much more. The project culminates in a performance for family and friends where participants show off their new skills.
