Ten years ago, a handful of us were cajoled into putting together a crime festival in the sedate Victorian spa town of Harrogate. We called in favours from reluctant friends, persuaded publishers to come north of the M25 and compiled a programme that excited us. We hoped it would attract readers too. We must have done something right, because the Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival is now the most vibrant and popular event of its kind anywhere in the world. Because we’re inclusive. We include the very best writers, from newbies to icons of the genre. We include translated fiction, TV and film adaptation, a quiz and, of course, beer. We don’t hide the writers away – we include them in the rolling party in the bar. And in everything we do, we include the readers. Because writers without readers are redundant.

At the 2011 Festival, news broke of the massacre on Utoya in Norway. During the 2012 Festival, news broke of a gunman opening fire at a movie premiere of The Dark Knight Rises in Colorado. In both horrific cases, the news threw into stark relief the conversations onstage. In a world where unspeakable crimes are committed, does crime fiction anatomise or glorify crime? Does it provide readers with consolation and enlightenment or does it further disturb? These haunting questions will be discussed by authors who are keenly aware of such difficult dimensions and explore them in their work. The towering influences of other much-admired writers can inspire, scare and shape novelists in many ways, including some they’re not even aware of till later. BIG READ Join in the 2013 Big Read and our celebration of the sixtieth anniversary of the creation of the greatest ever fictional spy, James Bond, by reading the very first Bond novel, Casino Royale, this summer. In Casino Royale, first published in 1953 and an instant success, Fleming introduces one of the most captivating and popular fictional characters to the world. In this, the first of Fleming’s 007 adventures, a game of cards is James Bond’s only chance to bring down the desperate SMERSH agent Le Chiffre. But Bond soon discovers that there is far more at stake than money. The Author Ian Lancaster Fleming was born in London in 1908. His first job was at Reuters news agency after which he worked briefly as a stockbroker before joining Naval Intelligence during the Second World War. Following Casino Royale, Fleming went on to write twelve other Bond books as well as two works of non-fiction and the children’s classic Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The Bond books have sold over sixty million copies and earned praise from figures such as Raymond Chandler, who called Fleming ‘the most forceful and driving writer of thrillers in England’ and President Kennedy, who named From Russia with Love as one of his favourite books. The books inspired a hugely successful series of film adaptations which began in 1961 with the release of Dr No, starring Sean Connery as 007. Back in early 2003, the very first meeting of incredible minds converged at a hotel in Harrogate to discuss the possibility of the Harrogate Crime Writing Festival. A decade on, and the success of the Festival now speaks for itself, with some of the biggest names and brightest talents in international crime fiction appearing on the Harrogate stage each July! The full team at the Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival would like to say a huge and heartfelt thank you to all of those that have helped the Festival to become ‘Europe’s largest Crime Writing Festival’, with an audience of over 12,000. Starting with the co-founder, the incomparable Val McDermid, who chaired the inaugural Festival in 2003 and the two following Festivals in 2004 & 2005, to Jane BradishEllames who guided the Festival so wonderfully into being during its early years, and the time and expertise of the Programming Committee since 2003: Maria Rejt, Hilary Hale, Selina Walker and David Shelley, with a special thank you to the incredible literary agent Jane Gregory, who has remained on the committee since the Festival’s inception.
