HARROGATE INTERNATIONAL FESTIVALS
Welcome
to our 50th Anniversary Year fifth year. Join Simon Callow as explorer Sir Francis Drake, re-living his perilous circumnavigation of the globe, with an exotic live soundtrack featuring original and new compositions played by Viol Consort Fretwork.
Conceived in 1966 as a Festival for the Arts and Sciences, Harrogate International Festivals in its current manifestation encompasses a multitude of different Festivals and events running in abundance throughout each year, showcasing music, film, literature, theatre and dance. This year is no exception. Throughout the Summer, let our theme Discover, Explore, Experiment guide you on an exciting journey.
From the classical to the criminal, we’ve put Harrogate on the literary map with the Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival. This year, join 80 crime writers in the most influential, exciting festival of its kind in the world, curated by Peter James and featuring Val McDermid, Jeffery Deaver, Martina Cole and Linwood Barclay to name a few.
The centrepiece of our 50th Anniversary celebrations is a specially created Fire Garden, in the Valley Gardens this June, designed by renowned French street art company Cie Carabosse, creating a fairground of fire where you can set your deepest imaginings free.
Because it’s such a special year, we have a few extra treats. Music legend Van Morrison, who first performed for us ten years ago, will return in June. And – as one of our most popular names on the bill – we know that many of you will be delighted to know that John Wilson will present a number of events, including In Conversation with Edward Seckerson and bringing his ever popular Orchestra and the glamour of Gershwin to the Royal Hall, before sweeping you back in time – and perhaps off your feet – with an Afternoon Tea Dance with the John Wilson Orchestra.
At Harrogate International Festivals, our legacy for showcasing the finest international artists stands strong to this day. We welcome back Sir Willard White as Guest Curator, cellist Stephen Isserlis and the Czech National Symphony Orchestra. We’re proud of the relationships we have held over the years with the classical greats. But we’re also keen to discover new relationships, and new talent. We’re grateful to festival favourites John Wilson, Sir Willard White, Julian Lloyd Webber, Michael Collins and Lesley Garret for recommending a number of this year’s Young Musicians – through our Pay It Forward initiative.
Through our HIF+ programme, practice MindFOLDness, the art of mindful Origami – the new trend for crafty calmness, and if you haven’t already, please do try our Berwins Salon North on 28th July, featuring three fascinating speakers exploring some of the most stimulating ideas in music today.
The Young Musicians Series also includes the first performance as part of what we hope will become a lasting relationship with BBC Radio 3’s New Generation Artists Scheme, supporting talented musicians to reach the next stages of their careers whilst bringing some of the world’s most promising new talent to listeners across the UK, broadcast on BBC Radio 3.
We’re passionate about the community we work and live in, and believe we need to ensure the Arts remain vibrant for the town and its visitors. Embrace everything from the bellowing Black Dyke Brass Band to the achingly beautiful sounds of The Unthanks and go on a journey of the heart, as well as the mind. We hope that you’ll be challenged, moved, inspired, and above all else, thoroughly entertained.
In a nod to our beginnings as a Festival of the Arts and Science, hear about the influence of Mozart’s music on Einstein, Journey to the Centre of the Sun with Lucie Green, and take a tour of the Solar System with BBC’s Mark Thompson, all as part of the Raworths Harrogate Literature Festival, now in its
We look forward to the adventure together in 2016 and beyond. Sharon Canavar, Chief Executive

future
FESTIVALS OF HARROGATE SINCE 1966
Since its inception in 1966, Harrogate International Festivals has fired up hearts and minds, revolutionising the cultural landscape of the North Yorkshire spa town.
HARROGATE INTERNATIONAL FESTIVALS 1966-2016
In 2014 Harrogate International Festivals delivered over 300 distinct events, created 60m+ opportunities to read about Harrogate through national partnerships and attracted over 90,000 people to our portfolio of live and digital activity.
Our appeal to raise £1m is a critical part of the Festival’s vision to create a secure future for the charity. “Since 1966, the Harrogate International Festivals has played a central role in shaping the nation’s musical landscape, and Yorkshire is lucky to have such a respected and renowned event on its doorstep. I urge you to support it”. Lesley Garrett CBE.
At the heart of our delivery is the creation of an evolving and innovative programme, changing lives through cultural experience. The Festivals cannot stand still; we are determined to invest in our strengths of raising aspirations, creating opportunity and nurturing excellence.
A charitable organisation, our passion and ambition maintains our position as an arts organisation delivering Festivals of national importance and dramatically increasing the cultural opportunities for Harrogate and the wider region.
Philanthropic investment is now critical to the Festivals being a sustainable organisation, with the ability to make full use of our artistic and cultural inheritance and create life changing opportunities in the arts. With your support our appeal will allow us to move further and faster and to touch more lives with our work.
The Harrogate International Festivals is the Home of Festivals. Established as the Harrogate Festival of Arts & Science, our founder Clive Wilson believed that
The Future 50 Appeal to secure the future of the Harrogate International Festivals will be made up of philanthropic donations, fundraising events and a range of activities. These funds will ensure that the future of the Harrogate International Festivals is vibrant and engaging, allowing us to continue to create access to the arts for the widest range of audiences and participants regardless of background and personal circumstance.
“The Festival must be seen as a developing thing, widening its scope and perhaps shifting its emphasis as the years go by”. The Festivals has indeed evolved throughout the years having been at the forefront of classical music in the 60s, the vanguard of comedy and street theatre in the 80s and 90s to the breadth of festivals within our current portfolio. Today we are distinctive amongst festivals, measuring our farreaching delivery against our limited funding income.
In short you will help ensure our arts charity thrives, not just survives. For more information about giving please contact Lizzie Brewster: 01423 562303 Lizzie@harrogate-festival.org.uk

We also present a performance in partnership with BBC Radio 3’s New Generation Artists – a scheme that helps to support talented musicians to reach the next stages of their careers and brings some of the world’s most promising new talent to listeners across the UK through BBC Radio 3 broadcasts.
Since its inception in 1966, Harrogate International Festivals has always believed in nurturing young and emerging talent to help create world class performers of the future, as demonstrated through our annual Young Musicians Series. To celebrate the Festivals’ 50th Anniversary there is a special focus on young performers, with more Young Musicians concerts than ever before. Through our Pay It Forward scheme, former Young Musicians including Lesley Garrett, Jullian Lloyd Webber and Michael Collins, have recommended their stars of the future. We also welcome winners of both local and international music competitions, as well as continuing our partnership with music charity Live Music Now.

Sonata for Violin and Piano No.1 in B minor, BWV 1014 Violin Sonata No.1 in G major, Op.78 Violin Sonata No.26 in B flat major, K378 Five Madrigal Stanzas Baal Shem Suite
Unravel the complexities of the universe in a special crossover event that marries music and literature to celebrate Harrogate International Festivals’ heritage as a Festival of Arts and Science.
The companion recital to Einstein’s Universe, violinist Jack Liebeck and pianist Katya Apekisheva perform a programme of violin music that was loved by Einstein or inspired his work.
Einstein, the world’s foremost physicist who developed general relativity - the most beautiful theory ever formulated turned to another virtuoso for solace and inspiration: Mozart. A violin player and devotee, Einstein saw his life ‘in terms of music’ and sensed the secrets of the universe in music.
Born in London in 1980, Liebeck is one of the most compelling violinists at work today, appearing with all the major British orchestras as well as being in global demand. A professor of violin at the Royal Academy of Music, he’s also played on the Oscar-nominated soundtrack for Anna Karenina (2012), and film score of Jane Eyre (2011). The Age newspaper praised his “individual voice, confident in articulation, capable of vehemence without stridency and a lilting elegance of phrasing.”
Professor Brian Foster – Professor of Experimental Physics at Oxford and European Director for the International Linear Collider, is joined by violinist Jack Liebeck to present a musical lecture, exploring Einstein’s life and involvement with music and how his ideas have shaped our concepts of space, time and the evolution of the Universe
Pianist Katya Apekisheva has been hailed by Gramophone magazine as “a profoundly gifted artist who has already achieved artistic greatness.” A prize winner of the Leeds International Piano Competition, and an acclaimed recording artist, she is one of Europe’s most renowned pianists, as well as Professor of Piano at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

Supported by the Audrey and Stanley Burton Trust
Mozart Tchaikovsky Dvorˇák
The Marriage of Figaro Overture Violin Concerto in D major, Op.35 Symphony No.8 in G major, Op.88
Libor Pesek - Conductor Alexander Sitkovetsky - Violin
The Music Festival Finale opens with Mozart’s ever popular overture, before welcoming Sitkovestsky to perform Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto, one of the greatest works ever written for the instrument.
The inspirational power of a live orchestra is something everyone should experience in their lifetime.
The final work truly demonstrates that Dvorˇák’s musical energy didn’t just inject new life into his own music; it shone a way for the late 19th century symphony to be profound in its musical implications as well as brilliant and immediate in its communicative power. Dvorˇák’s eighth symphony does just that, offering a rousing end to the Harrogate Music Festival in our 50th Anniversary year.
Celebrating its 23rd birthday in 2016, the Czech National Symphony Orchestra has gained a position among both Czech and Europe’s top symphonic ensembles. Moscow-born violinist Alexander Sitkovetsky joins the orchestra, conducted by renowned conductor Libor Pesek. Hailed for his fiery, energetic playing, The Strad called Sitkovetsky the ‘star of the New Century’.
