HARROGATE INTERNATIONAL FESTIVALS
Welcome Symphony Orchestra, to taking an early morning stroll with the Bard of Barnsley, Ian McMillan - we hope all ages in your family will share the unifying, life affirming experience of a live performance this summer.
Last year we marked our 50th Anniversary with a magical Fire Garden that forged lasting memories and brought generations of families together. This year, we’re keeping that fire and spirit burning across continents and through the ages; 2017’s celebratory theme is ‘Generations’.
Alongside our flagship Music Festival, this July we welcome the world famous Theakston Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival. Our Guest Programming Chair Elly Griffiths has programmed blockbuster authors Lee Child, Ian Rankin, Dennis Lehane and Kathy Reichs, alongside TV panels on ITV’s Vera and Grantchester.
Putting the international into our Festivals, we explore the world - from the Kamus String Quartet, who celebrate Finnish music across the generations - and cross the Atlantic with a free concert performed by the San Jose Symphonic Choir.
Now in its 15th year, it too reflects our Generations theme. ‘Queen of crime’, Val McDermid handpicks her top debut crime authors in the annual New Blood panel. We also honour an established giant of the genre as we present our Outstanding Contribution to Crime Fiction Award.
Our success lies not just in bringing the finest international talent to Harrogate’s doorstep, but in our commitment to transform lives through culture. We are passionate about the transformational power of the arts. Our HIF+ programme delivers year-round educational and outreach work to our district, from our free Big Write, inspiring local school children and aspiring writers, to our free weekly Musical Mums sessions for young mums and their children.
We’re also thrilled to announce a glimpse of the line-up for this autumn’s boutique festival for book lovers - the Raworths Harrogate Literature Festival. As audiences dance this summer in the Royal Hall to the swinging band music from Alex Mendham & His Orchestra, they will be echoing the steps of our grandparents who graced its dancefloors in days gone by, and those of our grandchildren who will boogie in future years.
Supporting the rising stars of the future is also at the heart of our Festivals. The renowned Young Musicians Series returns, alongside a showcase from BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists, recorded for broadcast on BBC Radio 3. We’re also excited to be supporting new compositions, written by Gareth Williams and Mark Simpson, performed by The Gould Piano Trio.
We believe culture is a flame that should be passed on, sung, celebrated and shimmied, like a flaming baton in a relay race, from generation to generation. It takes passion to safeguard it.
2017 welcomes Armonico Consort as our Artists in Residence, who will deliver a special ‘Big Sing’, an opportunity for the whole community to participate in the Festival.
Here’s to our strong heritage and ambitious future, we hope you’ll support us this summer, and for decades to come.

European Union Chamber Orchestra with Benjamin Goldscheider Wednesday 5 July | Royal Hall | 7.30pm Pre-Concert Talk | 6.30pm
L. Mozart W.A. Mozart W.A. Mozart M. Haydn J. Haydn
Symphony in D major Adagio in F K.411 Horn Concerto No. 4 in E flat major Concertino for Horn in D major Symphony No. 42 in D major
Hans-Peter Hofmann | Director Benjamin Goldscheider | French Horn Since its first public performance in 1981, the European Union Chamber Orchestra has performed in venues across Europe and as far afield as Asia, North, South & Central America, North Africa, India and the Middle East. The orchestra has worked with internationally renowned soloists such as Julian Lloyd Webber, Nicola Benedetti, Yehudi Menuhin and Tasmin Little. In 2008 the Orchestra’s Haydn CD was Gramophone magazine’s “Editor’s Choice” and their 2013 release of music by Mozart received an “Outstanding Award” in the International Record Review. Directed by Hans-Peter Hofmann, this concert programme explores Harrogate Music Festival’s theme of “Generations” by examining one of the greatest musical dynasties of all time - the Haydn and Mozart families. The orchestra will be joined by BBC Young Musician Finalist Benjamin Goldscheider who will perform Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Horn Concerto No. 4 in E flat major as well as Michael Haydn’s Concertino for Horn in D major. It is not surprising that both W.A. Mozart and Joseph Haydn emerged as two of the finest musical minds of the time, both having the guidance of their fathers, who were also talented composers. Although the music of Leopold Mozart and Michael Haydn is less well known than that of their more prolific sons, the Haydn and Mozart families developed a strong connection. While W.A. Mozart was still young, Joseph Haydn was already a renowned composer but as Mozart grew older, the pair developed a mutual respect for each other’s compositions. Tickets: £21, £17, £15. Established in 1924, the San Jose Symphonic Choir has been under the direction of Leroy Kromm since 1985 and is based in Silicon Valley, San Francisco. In addition to performing standard symphonic choral repertoire, the Choir also regularly commissions and performs works by living composers and in particular, compositions that highlight wider community and humanitarian issues and causes. future
FESTIVALS OF HARROGATE SINCE 1966
Since its inception in 1966, Harrogate International Festivals has fired up hearts and minds, revolutionising the cultural landscape of the North Yorkshire spa town.
HARROGATE INTERNATIONAL FESTIVALS 1966-2016
In 2014 Harrogate International Festivals delivered over 300 distinct events, created 60m+ opportunities to read about Harrogate through national partnerships and attracted over 90,000 people to our portfolio of live and digital activity.
Our appeal to raise £1m is a critical part of the Festival’s vision to create a secure future for the charity. “Since 1966, the Harrogate International Festivals has played a central role in shaping the nation’s musical landscape, and Yorkshire is lucky to have such a respected and renowned event on its doorstep. I urge you to support it”. Lesley Garrett CBE.
At the heart of our delivery is the creation of an evolving and innovative programme, changing lives through cultural experience. The Festivals cannot stand still; we are determined to invest in our strengths of raising aspirations, creating opportunity and nurturing excellence.
A charitable organisation, our passion and ambition maintains our position as an arts organisation delivering Festivals of national importance and dramatically increasing the cultural opportunities for Harrogate and the wider region.
Philanthropic investment is now critical to the Festivals being a sustainable organisation, with the ability to make full use of our artistic and cultural inheritance and create life changing opportunities in the arts. With your support our appeal will allow us to move further and faster and to touch more lives with our work.
The Harrogate International Festivals is the Home of Festivals. Established as the Harrogate Festival of Arts & Science, our founder Clive Wilson believed that...
The Future 50 Appeal to secure the future of the Harrogate International Festivals will be made up of philanthropic donations, fundraising events and a range of activities. These funds will ensure that the future of the Harrogate International Festivals is vibrant and engaging, allowing us to continue to create access to the arts for the widest range of audiences and participants regardless of background and personal circumstance.
“The Festival must be seen as a developing thing, widening its scope and perhaps shifting its emphasis as the years go by”. The Festivals has indeed evolved throughout the years having been at the forefront of classical music in the 60s, the vanguard of comedy and street theatre in the 80s and 90s to the breadth of Festivals within our current portfolio. Today we are distinctive amongst festivals, measuring our farreaching delivery against our limited funding income.
In short you will help ensure our arts charity thrives, not just survives. For more information about giving please contact Lizzie Brewster: 01423 562303 Lizzie@harrogate-festival.org.uk
