Welcome Welcome to Harrogate International Festivals and your guide to the summer season this year. June and July are packed with over 80 events where you can experience great music, jazz and dancing in the mirrored Spiegeltent, take some time out end enjoy sensory bliss in our walk-in Sculpture on the Stray with the Luminarium from Architects of Air, or enjoy top notch food and a well-crafted cocktail or two in the Valley Gardens at our Long Table Dinner under the stars. Headliners this year include two-time Mercury Prize and Brit Award nominee Laura Mvula whilst giant of the crime genre; John Grisham visits the Theakston Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival for the first time, interviewed by the inimitable Lee Child. Of course, there’s free events galore; from our Young Musicians in the Spiegeltent, to our Big Read events with Mari Hannah and watch out for the fabulous Fairey Band and their Acid Brass popping up over town, trumpeting the tunes of dance club anthems. For over 50 years, Harrogate International Festivals has been committed to supporting the development of artists and authors from their first performances to headline shows so don’t miss the opportunity to say ‘I saw them when….’ with our New Blood author panel and Young Musicians concerts throughout the summer. We recognise that those on the stages in the future will also need audiences, so check out our Library of Live programme offering free tickets to U18s to some of our classical concerts across the summer, plus a host of events for little ones at the Children’s Festival. We’re celebrating Bernstein and Tchaikovsky marking key anniversaries of the composers’ lives thanks to northern powerhouse, the Halle Orchestra, conducted by Sir Mark Elder, whilst one of our very first Young Musicians Emma Johnson returns to Harrogate. With new commissions from Guest Curator; Ayanna Witter-Johnson and VOCES8 & Rachel Podger, 2018 ensures we celebrate composers old and new. Luminarium by Architects of Air by Alan Parkinson The West Park Stray will transform to a magical world of sensory bliss. From the Guggenheim in Spain, to the Sydney Opera House in Australia, the monumental and interactive walk-in sculptures of Architects of Air designed by Alan Parkinson, have astounded audiences across the globe. Architects of Air has toured the luminaria since 1992 and visited 43 countries. The luminarium offers a dazzling maze of winding paths and soaring domes where Islamic architecture, Archimedean solids and Gothic cathedrals meld into an inspiring monument to the beauty of light and colour, and where visitors can happily lose themselves.

Guest Curator: Ayanna Witter-Johnson What exactly is ‘the exception to the rule’? Our Guest Curator, Ayanna, is what. Soulful and captivating, the MOBOnominated singer-songwriter is a versatile jazz vocalist, composer and cellist. She has worked with symphony orchestras, big bands and quartets, while bringing the seemingly opposing worlds of classical and contemporary music together, with alternative R&B. Ayanna’s musical prowess gets her airplay on BBC Radio 1, thanks to her eclectic soul. A graduate of the Manhattan School of Music, she has played in Harlem NYC as well as working with the London and BBC Symphony Orchestras.
The installation awakens all the senses, creating a sense of wonder and enchantment for all ages.

Big Read Encouraging as many people as possible to read a classic work of crime fiction, increasing links across the region between libraries and reading groups, and inspiring new readers. This year’s book is James Patterson’s Along Came a Spider. This year’s Reader in Residence is acclaimed author Mari Hannah who is supporting the delivery of The Big Read.

Louisa Staples was awarded a place at The Yehudi Menuhin School when she was just eight years-old. As a school girl, aged 15, she was shortlisted for the world-renowned Menuhin Competition. Born in 2000, Louisa was one of few Brits to compete in this ultimate showcase of the world’s brightest violin protégés. At 16, she became a 2016 BBC Young Musician finalist. Music Over The Waters tells how the provision of music at the Spa eventually led to the creation of the Harrogate International Festival in 1966, then continuing to describe the successful growth of Harrogate International Festivals over fifty years up to 2016. The book also shows the close relationship between the prosperity of the Spa and the provision of music, so that the decline of the Spa also witnessed the decline of municipal music until a point in the mid-1960’s when the Spa closed, and municipal music all but disappeared. This encouraged private citizens to develop a thriving Concert Society and, a few years later, an International Festival of Arts and Sciences which over fifty years later is still thriving, though with a content and structure suited to modern times. Music Over The Waters also shows how the Harrogate International Festivals have influenced other bodies associated with music, because from its establishment, the Festivals played a significant role in the community life of the Harrogate District. It is to further this role that all proceeds from the sale of this book have been dedicated to Harrogate International Festivals. Music Over The Waters by Malcolm G.
