Oddsocks: The Tempest

Music, art and theatre has the ability to transform. See the world through new eyes this summer with our month-long Festival bursting with colour, laughter, soul and song. 2018’s Festival theme, Innovation, brings one of the most mercurial (and Mercury Award nominated) singers, Laura Mvula, to Harrogate. Returning are Festival favourite, The John Wilson Orchestra, swinging into town to breathe new life into Hollywood’s Golden Age, and we’ll relive Bernstein and Tchaikovsky, marking key anniversaries of the composers’ lives.

An alumni of Harrogate International Festivals’ Young Musician series in the 80s, Emma returns to the Festival that discovered her to celebrate the centenary of Leonard Bernstein.

Friday 27 July | Royal Hall | 7.30pm She’s the soul singer and two-time Mercury Prize and Brit Award nominee, with a public endorsement from Prince. Her album The Dreaming Room features collaborations with legend, Nile Rodgers.

Angels have inspired flights of brilliance for millennia, from poetry to art to music. Expect some divine intervention from the heavenly Bach, Mendelssohn and Rachmaninov, as the impeccable British vocal ensemble VOCES8 unite with the ‘queen of the Baroque violin’, Rachel Podger. This innovative, exquisite programme features a new commission by Owain Park.

Festival Finale: Hallé Orchestra with Sir Mark Elder

Sunday 29 July | Royal Hall | 7.30pm Schubert Symphony No.8 ‘Unfinished’ Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto in D major, Op.35 Dvořák Symphony No.7

British conductor Sir Mark Elder, Musical Director of Manchester’s world-famous Hallé Orchestra, marks the 125th anniversary of Tchaikovsky’s death.
