This summer the Hallé Orchestra return to Harrogate, bringing the quality and excitement they did under the baton of Sir Barbirolli, however this time they’re accompanied by a new man in town. He likes it shaken not stirred, and you will too as Casino Royale in Concert opens the season with Bond on the big screen supported by the full force of the Hallé. Whilst Bond may travel the world, this year the world comes to Harrogate. From the Leeds International Piano Competition Winner Eric Lu and Menuhin Competition winner Christian Li to authors travelling into town from across the world to raise a glass at the Theakston Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival including James Patterson and Jo Nesbo, Val McDermid and Belinda Bauer plus man of the moment Jed Mercurio. Harrogate continues to host visitors from across the world this summer as Harrogate hosts a Carnival in the Valley Gardens as part of the cultural festival supporting the World Cycling Championships. Music, dance and food means a party for all the family! Amongst a firmament of starry live acts, come marvel at the Museum of the Moon. An art installation celebrating the 50th anniversary of the the moon landings, with a fusion of lunar imagery, moonlight and surround sound.
See the Royal Hall in a new light with our Residency to rival the Spiegeltent, come dancing to the band the A-list trust to get the party going - the Euro-trotting Gypsy Queens. Go mad for it with DJ Graeme Park – the man behind the legendary Hacienda - throw in some rip-roaring glamour from the House of Burlesque, and a bust some moves at the Silent Disco for an electrifying night out. Doing it for the kids is our one-day Children’s Festival, and all ages can get into the swing of some old-fashioned wartime spirit with our epic free family day-out, as the popular 1940’s Day returns to Valley Gardens, complete with spitfire fly-over. This year we invite you to boldly go...from chilled concerts by candlelight to reaching orchestral heights, Harrogate International Festivals invites you to hear and see live events that will reimagine, and reignite, your world. Museum of the Moon is an out of this world installation with each centimetre representing 5km of the moon’s surface. It’s an awe-inspiring sight and is only £3 for adults and £1 for children so visit once or lots, stay for a few minutes or for longer, but don’t forget your camera. Did you know? There are even Pink Floyd lyrics about the dark side of the moon, but the entire concept of a “dark side” is inaccurate, just because the far side of the moon does not face Earth, does not mean that it is dark all the time.
Long Table Dinner For one night only, The Long Table Dinner will transform the iconic Valley Garden’s into Harrogate’s coolest restaurant. Enjoy an evening of style and sophistication, a spectacular setting and a sumptuous three course meal. Perfect for foodies. Did you know? Eric Lu won First Prize at The Leeds International Piano Competition in September 2018, performing Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto in the final with The Hallé and Edward Gardner. On his semi-final round, The Independent praised a reading of Chopin’s Second Sonata which “took one’s breath away with its measured grandeur.” Composed in 1854, Ghost Variations was the last piano work composed by Schumann. A rare treat for the ears, this set of theme and variations in E-flat major are infrequently played or recorded today. Brahms’ Three Intermezzo were composed in 1892. The first intermezzo in E-flat major is prefaced in the score by two lines from an old Scottish ballad, Lady Anne Bothwell’s Lament. The lines are “Balow, my babe, lie still and sleep! It grieves me sore to see thee weep.” Although composed in 1823, Schubert’s Piano Sonata in A minor was not published until 1839, eleven years after his death. This sonata, Schubert’s last to be in three movements, is seen by many to herald a new era in Schubert’s output for the piano. Handel was most famous for his operas, oratorios and concerti grossi. Eric Lu brings the Baroque period to life performing Chaconne HMV 435 from the most recent publication Händel-Werke-Verzeichnis. Chopin’s Second Sonata promises to bring this concert to a triumphant close. Comprising four movements, this sonata gained instant popularity with the public when published. Having become an archetypal evocation of death it has been performed at funerals all over the world, including Chopin’s own funeral. Programme: Schumann Brahms Schubert Handel Chopin

Be bowled over by this trio of powerhouse authors.
With over 70 million books in print worldwide, Harlan Coben is the perennial #1 New York Times author of 30 novels. He’s also shaping the streaming schedules with Netflix’s Safe. His next Netflix collaboration will star Hobbit actor Richard Armitage in The Stranger. Coben’s latest standalone, Run Away, is acclaimed as a ‘bombshell-laden thriller’. Ian Rankin created the iconic John Rebus, just over 30 years ago. He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and received an OBE for services to literature.
Belinda Bauer worked as a journalist and screenwriter before she gave novel writing a try; last year she rocked the literary world when she was longlisted for the Booker for Snap. Eva Dolan was shortlisted for the CWA Dagger (for unpublished authors) as a teenager. Her first standalone This is How it Ends propels her onto the A-list. Journalist and author Erin Kelly’s first novel, The Poison Tree, became a major ITV drama whilst He Said She Said sat on the Sunday Times bestseller list for 12 weeks, with Gillian Flynn declaring it ‘unforgettable’.

Jed Mercurio Special Guests: Val McDermid in conversation with Nicola Sturgeon Sun 21 July | 10.30am | Tickets £15
Sun 21 July | 12pm | Tickets £15
Who better to put the world to rights on a Sunday morning than two Scottish Supernovas? Val McDermid has been publishing acclaimed crime fiction for over 30 years. An international bestseller, she’s written four award-winning series. Other work includes non-fiction, short stories, a children’s picture book, writing dramas for radio and the stage, and captaining a winning University Challenge team.
Palms sweating? Make way for the mercurial Mercurio, who cemented his reputation as the most successful writer working in TV today with Bodyguard. The son of Italian immigrants, Jed worked as a junior doctor and served briefly with the RAF. His early work, Cardiac Arrest, set in an NHS hospital, reflected his own experiences and a fascination with how members of institutions close ranks. Bodyguard shared DNA with Line of Duty’s jawdropping twists, labyrinthine plots, and themes of internal corruption. Mercurio brought the nation to its knees in minutes as PTSD-sufferer and ex-squaddie turned police protection officer, David Budd (Richard Madden) prevented a suicide bombing on a packed train. A role that led to a Golden Globe and put Madden into the Bond rumour mill. With viewing figures exceeding 10 million, Bodyguard returned us to a time when a TV show could be a national event. Jed will be interviewed by the BBC’s Steph McGovern.
Nicola Sturgeon joined the SNP at 16. Five years later she became Scotland’s youngest parliamentary candidate and in 2014 was elected SNP Leader. She is the first female First Minister of Scotland. An enthusiastic reader, Nicola views books as one of life’s great pleasures. She regularly shares her recommendations on social media on a Saturday night and is an avid supporter of libraries. She’s also become a regular interviewer of writers at of writers at book festivals.

Festival Finale: Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra
31
Saturday 27 July | 7.30pm | Royal Hall Programme: Puccini | Capriccio Sinfonico Mozart | Clarinet Concerto in A Major, K.622 Brahms | Symphony No.4
Tickets: £40, £38, £35, £32, £29. Boxes: £90, £120
Founded in 1840 by a group of Liverpool music-lovers, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic is the UK’s oldest continuing professional symphony orchestra and one the world’s oldest concert societies. Under the baton of Singaporean conductor Kahchun Wong, this special night promises to be an unforgettable festival finale with a delectable programme of works. Puccini’s Capriccio Sinfonico was presented as his graduation composition in July 1883 and was only the second of his works ever to be published. Julian Bliss, one of the world’s finest clarinettist, joins the RLPO onstage to perform Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto in A major, which was completed less than two months before the composer’s death. Originally intended for basset horn, the version widely known today was transcribed for clarinet, with the listener hearing the work with differing colours. The 2019 summer season is brought to a close with the last of Brahms’ symphonies to be composed. With its serious tone and striking complexities, each of the movements of his fourth symphony bears the distinct stamp of his personality. Tickets: “All IRoom: can say Ballroom: £21, Garden £19- again - is lucky Liverpool.” - The Sunday Times
