Welcome to the 2022 Harrogate International Festivals Summer Season… I can’t quite believe I’m able to write this. After the last two years of programme cancellations, organising events, only to cancel again, we are finally able to bring back our wonderful Festivals of music, literature and crime this summer. Things aren’t fully back to normal as yet. We’re building back the team, creating new programmes and trying to get the balance right of not running before we can walk again, all delivered within an incredibly short space of time. We’re looking to the future in 2022 and focused our attention on a host of young musicians, writers, talent and performers in this year’s classical music programme, rising stars from around the world will be landing in town this July having won a clutch of international awards and hoping to wow our Harrogate audiences with their prowess. Meanwhile, our debut authors panel New Blood is probably one of the most hotly contested events of the year with Val McDermid’s annual picks often going on to become bestselling authors after the spectacular springboard of the Harrogate stage. 2022 also features our very first Young Conductor & Curator working with BBC Young Musician Winner and local; William Dutton to create a wonderful programme of classical and chamber music. This year also celebrates a host of special anniversaries across the season; from the 40th anniversary of the Hacienda in Manchester as we welcome Graeme Park to the Spiegeltent, to exploring how representation has changed in crime fiction as we mark 50 years
since the first Pride March in England. More golden anniversaries are to be celebrated with the Brodsky Quartet in our opening concert and of course a very special celebration of music to commemorate the Platinum Jubilee of the world’s longest reigning Monarch as the Armonico Consort recreate the highlights of the Coronation Service of Queen Elizabeth II in a unique concert performance hosted by ITV news anchor Nicholas Owen. Of course, there’s familiar favourites as Oddsocks present their fabulous capers at Harlow Carr with Hamlet…The Comedy, a host of free lunchtime events in the Spiegeltent and the Carnival will make its return to town as a grand finale to the whole season. There’s a lot to celebrate in the programme from young musicians and writers at the very start of their careers, to celebratory events marking one’s journey in life, to a host of fun with our free family and community events across the month. We’re looking forward to a fantastic summer and as the huge green chairs land at HIF HQ and the body outlines pop up around the town, we hope you manage to enjoy a little bit of music, reading and Festival fun across the summer. Introducing our 2022 Guest Curators
Denise Mina
2022 Theakston Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival Programming Chair We are delighted and excited to welcome everyone back to Harrogate again this year for what promises to be an outstanding Festival. We hope that our special guests and old friends, our long-established traditions and new events will make this return to the full Festival after the Covid hiatus a real celebration of crime writing in its many iterations. Personally, I feel very fortunate to be part of the programming committee in a year when we have been able to bring so many outstanding writers together. We want everyone to have a great weekend and hope that you will enjoy every moment of it as much as we do!

William Dutton
2022 Harrogate Music Festival Guest Curator I am thrilled to have been asked to curate the programme for the Harrogate Music Festival this summer. Having grown up in Harrogate and having performed in the town many times before, it is a special honour to be a part of the wonderful Festivals team. We want to take you on a thrilling musical journey in the hands of some of the most exciting musicians in the country. A few weeks ago, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge called on people in the UK to help tackle loneliness in their annual ‘Mental Health Minute’ on the radio. Although we might not always feel it, I am sure that many of us in the past two years (myself included) have felt at times alone and sad. If we have learned anything from the pandemic it is that we need each other, we need our Festivals and we need great music!

celebratory anniversaries across the season; from the 40th anniversary of the Hacienda in Manchester as we welcome DJ Graeme Park to the Spiegeltent, to exploring how representation has changed in crime fiction as we mark 50 years since the first Pride March in England. Theakston Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year Award #TheakstonAward champions the very best crime fiction being published in paperback in the UK and Ireland. With a mix of nailbiting psychological thrillers, tense police procedurals and gripping mysteries, this year’s longlist demonstrates the incredible breadth of modern crime fiction. We can’t wait to reveal the winner to launch the Theakston Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival.

Yes, it certainly sounds like a dramatic recap in your favourite TV series, but we think it’s only right that we look back on the last two years which hold a tremendous amount of poignancy for so many reasons.
Commissioned new music from Dr David Lancaster.
Launched our digital summer season The HIF Weekender.
Brought literature to life in the streets of Harrogate with Codex Light Installation.
We have a long and historic heritage having fired up hearts and minds since 1966, helping to launch the careers of a host of writers and musicians, and creating inspirational experiences of international standard for Harrogate and the North. As an arts charity with only 2% of our income sourced from public funding, our delivery and employees are reliant on the income from ticket sales, sponsors, and supporters. We were devastated to have to cancel our Festivals when the pandemic hit in 2020. We have had to make some challenging decisions over the last two years, losing valuable team members and planning then cancelling events too many times to mention.
May 2020 Brightened up dark streets with the #ViewFromMyWindow campaign.
Brought live music back to Harrogate on our traveling stage Brass On The Bus.
But with the generosity of our Friends and supporters we were able to continue to support our community and deliver much-needed cheer, in one way or another over the last two years – online, outside, with reduced capacity, plenty of PPE, and a whole host of hope, hard work and gratitude.

Kasai Masai
Jo Harrop
Based in London and led by Nickens Nkoso, Kasai Masai’s music reflects their journey from the rural to urban, performing music which has been passed on from generation to generation combined with their own contemporary style. Written in Swahili, Lingala and Kimongo, Kasai Masai’s lyrics portray the cultural diversity of Congo where more than four hundred languages are spoken. The band’s fast-paced style of soukous and rumba meld with Congolese folkloric traditions to create an infectious form of dance music. Expect galloping rhythms, strong melodies, passionate beats, swinging guitars and moving saxophone as Kasai Masai make their Harrogate debut. Theirs is a sound that will transport you to a land where music is a way of life.
Jo Harrop cut her teeth working with a host of legendary artists including Neil Diamond, Rod Stewart and Enrique Iglesias. She joins us in the Spiegeltent to showcase songs from her critically acclaimed album The Heart Wants. Written and recorded when the world came to a sudden standstill in the wake of the pandemic, it's an album about love, life, and loss. This is sure to be an evening of stunning jazz, as Iggy Pop described her as “a superb and unimaginably good vocalist.”

Gone but not forgotten, Jimmy’s nightclub was Harrogate’s busiest club in the mid-1990s to late noughties, loved for its numerous dance floors, nooks, and crannies. Described as ‘a class night out’, it was a venue that ushered in a golden age of clubs that dared to be different. Jimmy’s was the go-to hang out. Maybe it was a bit cheesy. Ok, so it was probably the worst and best nightclub ever. Now it’s time to relive the glory days with our tribute - Jimmy’s Night. They don’t make clubs like this anymore.

Alexei Grynyuk | piano Saturday 16 July | 7.30pm Wesley Chapel
Kiev-born pianist Alexei Grynyuk displayed tremendous interest in music from his early childhood, and at just six years old started giving his first concerts. He attracted wide attention at the age of thirteen when he won the first prize at the Sergei Diaghilev All-Soviet-Union piano competition in Moscow. By then he had already been touring Eastern Europe as a soloist as well as performing Mozart and Chopin piano concertos with Ukrainian orchestras. Later he went on to achieve numerous awards at international piano competitions including first prizes at the Vladimir Horowitz International Piano Competition in Kiev and the Shanghai International Piano Competition in China. Equally at home in Classical, Romantic and Twentieth-Century repertoire, Grynyuk has already appeared at many of the world’s most renowned concert halls, including Wigmore Hall and the South Bank Centre in London, Salle Cortot & Salle Gaveau in Paris, the Great Hall of Moscow Conservatoire, Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and other prominent venues of Europe, United States, Mexico, Japan, South Korea and Morocco. “Sublime playing. Paula Hawkins
Michael Connelly
It is impossible to write about Paula Hawkins without reference to the book that started it all. Girl on the Train was, and remains, a phenomenon. It has sold an estimated 23 million copies worldwide and became the template for every psychological thriller that followed it. Yet this is clearly no one-book wonder…
When Dr Tess Gerritsen was on maternity leave from her job as a physician in Hawaii, she took the chance to try to fulfil a lifelong dream to become a writer. It was something she achieved with spectacular success. Over 40 million copies of her novels have been sold in 40 countries.
A writing career can’t be judged in numbers alone, but Michael Connelly’s certainly tell a story. He has written 36 novels, which have sold over 80 million copies and have been translated into 40 languages, winning leading literary prizes and have been adapted into major movies and a hit TV series.
Paula Hawkins will be interviewed by author NJ Cooper.
Tess Gerritsen will be interviewed by author SJ Watson.
Michael Connelly will be interviewed by international bestseller Mark Billingham.

John Connolly
No one combines crime fiction, the gothic and the supernatural quite like John Connolly. He is the master of his trade, a scalpel in one hand and a bludgeon in the other, writing beautiful prose and brutal people. As well as several blistering standalones, Connolly’s much-loved Charlie Parker series now runs to 20 novels, each more terrifying than the one before. John Connolly will be interviewed by author and critic Mark Lawson.

Lynda La Plante A living legend of crime writing will take to the Theakston’s stage this July as Lynda La Plante talks about her extraordinary life and writing career. After graduating as an actor from RADA alongside Anthony Hopkins, John Hurt and Ian McShane, she carved out a successful career on stage and the small screen. It was while filming The Gentle Touch that she turned her hand to writing with phenomenal results. The result was Widows, a huge TV hit in the early 80s. She then turned her hand to novels, writing international bestsellers, before creating a show for ITV, the iconic and ground-breaking Prime Suspect. It set a path for unparalleled success in books and TV.

In what is sure to be an unmissable event, Lynda LaPlante will be interviewed by programme chair Denise Mina.
Charlie Higson
Charlie Higson is one of those annoying people who are good at everything. Not content with being an actor and comedian, and formerly a singer, he is, of course, also an acclaimed author with a hugely impressive body of work. A star of The Fast Show, Broadchurch and Grantchester, his writing career is at least equally striking. The five novels in his Young Bond series and the seven in The Enemy series have thrilled and enchanted readers of all ages. His latest novel Whatever Gets You Through the Night, is an out and out crime thriller, a gripping and brilliant page turner with a dark heart. Charlie Higson will be interviewed by TV presenter Steph McGovern.

Heathcliff Trio
Wednesday 27 July | 7.30pm | Wesley Chapel Bonded by a musical consensus and shared vision, the Heathcliff Trio was founded in late 2020. Created from a decade-long collaboration between childhood friends Ashley Tong and Sebastian Kolin, who studied together at the Yehudi Menuhin School, they encountered Danish pianist, Jonathan Siahaan, upon completing their studies, whose resonating philosophy pronounced himself the final choice of a long-lasting search. The Heathcliff Trio recently won 1st prize in the 9th International Johannes Brahms Chamber Music Competition with two additional special prizes including the best interpretation of a piece by Brahms. The Trio recently made their debut at Wigmore Hall for the final concert of The Parkhouse Award International Competition for Chamber Music. Despite their short existence, the Trio brings together their extensive individual experiences in chamber music, which include collaborations with artists including Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider, Kathryn Stott, Enrico Pace and Barnabas Kelemen.

Festival Finale with the Amici Ensemble Thursday 28 July | 7.30pm | Royal Hall
The Amici Ensemble was originally formed in the 1980s to showcase the talents of professional musicians based in the region, and to demonstrate that great, high-quality orchestral music can be programmed locally without having to draw players from further afield. The players are traditionally drawn from the region’s larger professional orchestras including Opera North, the Halle and BBC Philharmonic, which ensures an incredibly high standard of performance. Whilst renowned for accompanying soloists and choirs, the orchestra are delighted to be returning to a more symphonic repertoire with a fitting close to the 2022 Harrogate Music Festival, conducted by our Music Festival Guest Curator, William Dutton.
