ARTUR PIZARRO

AQUARELLE GUITAR QUARTET

Mike Hayward & Laura Grime

piano Portuguese pianist Artur Pizarro shot to fame in 1990 when he won first prize in the prestigious Leeds International Piano Competition and is renowned throughout the world for his lyrical poeticism and outstanding virtuosity. The programme covers a vast range of styles and emotions, but perhaps the highlight is the inclusion of Ravel’s Gaspard de la Nuit – often called the most technically difficult and virtuosic pieces in the repertoire. Expect fireworks from one of the best pianists of the younger generation – if not any generation. “Perceptive, sympathetic, brilliant” Gramophone Schumann Waldszenen Op.82 Ravel Gaspard de la Nuit

Chopin Sonata No.3 in B minor Op.58 Prokofiev Sonata No.7 in B flat Op.83 Tickets: £15, £13.50

Sunday 7 March 11am

MICHAEL McHALE piano

The Endellion is renowned as one of the finest quartets in the world and are famed for their interpretation of Beethoven’s works. Their Sunday Series programme has a Russian theme, featuring the first of Beethoven’s Op.59 Quartets, known as the ‘Rasoumovsky’ quartets because they were commissioned by the Russian ambassador to Vienna. The Russian flavour continues with Tchaikovsky’s beautiful and elegiac Third Quartet. “In music of the Viennese Classical composers the Endellion has few challengers” The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians Beethoven String Quartet No.8 in E minor Op.59 No.2 Tchaikovsky String Quartet No.3 in E flat Op.30 Tickets: £15, £13.50

Michael Collins’ phenomenal talent, depth of expression and warmth of personality have made him one of today’s most sought-after soloists. Collins’ programmes are beautifully constructed, and the Sunday Series recital is no exception. With classical poise and elegance from Weber, romantic melodies from Saint-Saëns, sultry jazz from Gershwin and virtuosic displays in Messager’s Solo de Concours, there really is something for everyone. “Collins dazzles like a bel canto diva in the pyrotechnic leaps, trills and runs, while he lavishes his rich tone, phenomenal breath control and deeply satisfying expressive insights” Sunday Times Saint-Saëns Sonata Op.167 Poulenc Sonata Gershwin 3 Preludes André Messager Solo De Concours

“A genuine treat: energetic, sensitive, texturally varied, technically faultless and highly evocative” Classic FM Programme to include works by: Rimsky-Korsakov

Since his triumph as winner of the 1970 Chopin International Piano Competition, pianist Garrick Ohlsson has established himself worldwide as a musician of magisterial interpretive and technical prowess. 2010 is the bicentenary of Chopin’s birth, and in celebration Ohlsson will be performing an all-Chopin recital, featuring some of his best-known works alongside some rarer treats. The Second Sonata is known for the famous ‘Funeral March’ of the second movement, but we also see a lighter side to Chopin in the beautifully rich Waltz. The programme concludes with the virtuosic and passionate Scherzo, completing a fitting tribute to a Romantic genius. “Mr. Ohlsson... played with stunning but never steely power, free but never distorted rubato, and delicate but never precious beauty” New York Times Chopin Three Nocturnes Op.9 Two Polonaises Op.40 Sonata No.2 in B flat minor Op. 35 Mazurkas Op.7 Nos. 1,2,3 Mazurkas Op.30 No.4 Waltz in A flat Op.42 Scherzo No.2 in B flat minor Op.31 Tickets: £15, £13.50
