WELCOME
FROM
THE
HEAD
May I offer you all a very warm welcome to Harrow Hong Kong’s 2021 Speeches and Prizes. As we continue to live through the most challenging moments in history we need to adapt quickly. The rate of progress in upskilling and innovation is astonishing; as the saying goes: ‘Necessity is the mother of invention’. As a school, and as a sector as a whole, we have needed to make huge strides in online learning and the way we teach and learn is changing. When we finally come out of this pandemic, it will be different from when we first went in, back in January 2020. However, what has not changed is our ability to connect with each other, as friends, teachers, parents, alumni, governors, and supporters of the school. As full school resumed again on May 24th, the sense of excitement was palpable and there was a sense that life was getting back to some sort of normality as the community was reunited. It is a pleasure to come together today to celebrate all that our pupils have achieved over the course of the year. Not only have our young people continued to progress and attain a high standard in their academic studies, they have shown an appreciation of the arts, continued to give of their time and money to charitable endeavours and involved themselves in competitions, socially-distanced sport and a range of Super Curriculum and Co-Curricular Activities. The fact that our pupils and staff have continued to achieve in such a dynamic way is a testament to the spirit of the school and how we ‘interconnect’. I am delighted that we can celebrate all that our boys and girls have achieved once again this year and that parents can join us via a live link. Not everyone will be a prize winner, but each one of our pupils has in their own way impacted on our school community. At Harrow Hong Kong we are blessed with outstanding pupils and staff and supportive parents and Governors. To quote the words emblazoned across our 2021 Long Ducker t-shirts, we are ‘Stronger Together’. I hope you enjoy the 2021 Speeches and Prizes.

SONGS
Songs have been an important part of Harrow life ever since John Farmer, a former Head of Music, wrote the first Song in 1864. The Harrow Song Book now contains over fifty Songs written about aspects of life at the School. They are a unifying force as Songs are sung in many different scenarios: by boys in their Houses every term; by the whole School to audiences of parents, Old Harrovians, and guests of honour; and by Old Harrovians when they gather in different parts of the world. The tradition has been taken on at Harrow Hong Kong through the composition of its own Songs. There are now nine: New Harrow (2012), May Fortune Reign (2013), One Thousand Voices (2014), Among the Pillars (2016), We Will Succeed (2017), Every Step (2018), Where We Belong (2019), The Light (2020) and One Moment, One People (2021). 10

One Moment, One People Written by Beccy Owen
If you are locked out I will bring the key. If you are lonely come and stand by me. Cos the room keeps getting brighter as you shine a light. and the world keeps getting kinder with you by my side. This is one moment, (This is) one people, (This is) one lifetime, (This is) one song. This is one moment, (This is) one people, (This is) one lifetime, (This is) one song. If you feel diff’rent we will take your hand. If you feel frightened come and join the band. Cos the room keeps getting brighter as we shine a light, and the world keeps getting kinder singing out side by side. This is one moment, one people, one lifetime, one song. This is one moment, one people, one lifetime, one song. Every heartbeat drums together and fills up with pride and we’re growing strong together, singing out side by side. This is one moment, one people, one lifetime, one song. This is one moment, (Cos the room keeps getting brighter as you shine a light,) (This is) one people, (This is) one lifetime, (and the world keeps getting kinder with you by my side.) (This is) one song (x 2) The room keeps getting brighter as you shine a light, and the world keeps getting kinder with you by my side.

HEAD’S
SPEECH
25
BILL School Bill is the traditional roll call for boys at Harrow that took place in the Bill Yard located in front of the original School building, which was completed in 1615, and today is called the Old Schools. On Speech Day at Harrow, the School Bill ceremony re-enacts the roll call, in which every boy is involved. When a boy’s name is read out, he passes the Head Master, takes off his hat and says ‘Here, Sir’ before replacing it and moving on. At Harrow Hong Kong, pupils will be expected to say ‘Here, Ma’am’ when they pass the Head and take off their hat.
