FROM THE HEAD MASTER

Dear Parents Welcome to the final Harrovian of the 19/20 year. It has been wonderful to welcome our students back to school for the last two weeks of term, giving them and their teachers a much-welcomed lift in spirits. We have been able to introduce the new normal routines successfully, helped by limiting the numbers of year groups attending each day. Is it possible for children to wear masks all day and socially distance themselves? The answer is, ‘yes it is’. We now look forward to the start of the new school year in August, when we aim to reopen fully. This has been an extraordinarily difficult year, thank you for your support. As we look to the new school year, there is much to be optimistic about. I would like to thank the staff who have worked so hard this year and adapted to changing circumstances with good grace. I would also like to thank staff who are leaving Harrow Bangkok this summer for their service and contribution to the school, and especially to the five members of staff with over 5 years of service: Mrs Kirsty Salmon, Mr Loic Ropars, Mrs Swarnalata Naik, Mrs Yuki Sugimura, Mr Christopher Johnson and Ms Elizabeth Hammond. After 17 years of service, I would like to acknowledge Chris and Liz’s significant contribution to boarding, music and the development of the school. For departing colleagues, I wish you the very best for the future. To the whole Harrow Bangkok community, I wish you a safe and relaxing summer break. With my very best wishes

l ead of Lower Schoo I would also like to thank our parents for all their positive difference at our school.

It has been an incredible couple of weeks to end a remarkable year. Having our students back in class, albeit a little further away from each other than once before, has been delightful. Last week our Reception children had a quick visit to see their Year 1 classrooms and received a video from House Teddy sorting students into their new Houses. The House system is at the heart of students’ lives at Harrow Bangkok, with children staying in the same House from Year 1 until Year 13 (and beyond). Being part of a House gives a great sense of belonging and helps to develop our students as future leaders by encouraging co-operation and friendly competition. House shirts are available in the school shop and are worn every Thursday. Next academic year we have a new name for our Early Years Centre. Instead of simply calling it the EYC, we will now call the entire centre from Toddlers through to Reception – the Little Lions Early Years Centre. After all these years it is great that our centre of innovative and excellent practice gets its own name! I would like to say farewell and good luck to all our departing teachers. We all wish you every success in your future lives and thank you for making such a

support during these difficult months. Depending on their age, most students have continued to learn as well as they would have done during this time. Many have developed new-found learning skills including, independence and responsibility, and I am sure that children will ‘hit the ground running’ at the start of next academic year when I hope things will be almost back to normal. Best of luck to our Year 5s moving on to the Prep phase of Upper School. Watching you grow over the years has been my pleasure and I will miss you very, very much, but know that I will be reading more about your successes in these pages in the coming months and years. I hope you enjoy our virtual Speech Day this Friday. While it is a shame that we were unable to hold the live event that we would have liked to, I hope you agree that the virtual experience recognised the hard work and achievements by our students in the best way we could in these circumstances and I congratulate all our prizewinners.

Well done to all students for your determination and hard work this year. I wish you all an enjoyable holiday and look forward to seeing you again soon. Nicholas Prockter Head of Lower School

Nursery Home Learning The well-being of the children is our utmost priority, therefore Nursery teachers have dedicated whole-class live Zoom sessions where we can come together in a fun and relaxed environment. Nursery S gathered for our first virtual group photo during our live Zoom session. Each morning the children and teachers take part in these live sessions which offer all of us the opportunity to see one another and participate in activities together during the school’s COVID-19 closure. During these sessions, we have done a number of different activities ranging from songs and story times, to exercises and counting, to a show and share session! Recently, a couple of children challenged the group to do planks as we counted up to 10, while another child challenged the group to use an object around our house as weights as we lifted it and counted up to 20! Ultimately, these activities are meant to offer continuity of speaking and listening in English, while having fun with each other during these times of isolation. We are going on our 3rd week of live Zooms now and to us in Nursery S, that means we have been fortunate to have 3 weeks of laughter, smiles, and a virtual social gathering each morning. One thing we all agree with is how much we miss school and each other! Thank you lovely parents as always for your continued support. Suzanne Uthaichalanond Nursery S Class Teacher

Online learning in Early Years Online learning and Early Years are not two things that you would naturally put together. Learning in the Early Years needs to be playbased - promoting exploration, enquiry, problem-solving. Our vision is to develop inquisitive learners who have a desire to find out more about the world around them. We needed to get creative with how online learning could work. Luckily, creativity is a strength of any Early Years teacher, and as it turns out, many of our Early Years parents too. Toddlers have been continuing to develop their ‘Communication and Language’ skills through the stimulus of stories – and believe me, our Toddlers love books! One of the stories, ‘Maisy Goes on Holiday’, was shared through a video, and the students were shown how they could make their own ice lollies – it’s very hot at the beach! Later in the week, students got together on Zoom to eat their lollies – observing how they tasted and how they melted. Super for development of ‘Understanding the World’ and fun to laugh with their friends and teachers too! Pre Nursery have been enjoying stories too – especially ‘The Shoemaker and the Elves’. Role playing shoe shops with teddies, lacing and practising tying their shoelaces and designing their own shoes are just a few of the many activities the children have enjoyed, developing their fine motor skills, mathematical understanding, creativity and imagination – without even realising it. Nursery students have loved seeing their friends every day in live Zoom sessions. They have had the opportunity to sing, play games, share stories and ideas, in much the same way they would have done at school. Seeing friends is such a cherished and valued part of our home learning day – seeing familiar faces can make everything seem a little more normal during such an unusual time. With Reception moving into Year One soon, it has been important that they continue to develop the core skills; reading, writing and number. However, don’t worry they have been having fun while doing it – plus one of the perks of home learning is yummy treats you wouldn’t normally have a school Kate Umpleby Head of Early Years

UPPER SCHOOL AND BEYOND

Head of

Upper School

This has been a year quite unlike any other, but our students have risen to the challenges and showed resilience. We have been so impressed with how they have engaged with online learning. It has been wonderful to welcome them back into school for the final two weeks to give them a semblance of normality and say goodbye to friends before the long summer holiday. During the school closure, many of our students took part in the COVID-19 reflections project, which is an opportunity for all the Harrow schools to record this unique moment in history. I would like to thank all students who took part in this and, in this issue, we have shared some examples. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a pleasant summer holiday and we look forward to the next academic year. We hope that in these times of uncertainty, the school can provide a sense of structure, normality and of course a truly world-class education. Jonny Liddell Head of Upper School

Poetry Competition

Once again, this year the English Faculty has run a Prep phase Poetry Writing Competition to coincide with our study of poetry in the summer term. We decided on the theme of Friendship and Gratitude and have read many interesting and heartfelt poems by our students. Here, we present a selection of the most outstanding poems. Well done to these students and well done to all those who have taken part and submitted their poems. John Tasker Prep English Co-ordinator

Harrow Bangkok Linguistics Olympiad 2020

Earlier this year in Term Two, just before all of the disruptions, all of our younger students and several of the older students took part in the annual Linguistics Olympiad. This was the second time we had run this event at Harrow Bangkok, and it was great to see the enthusiasm and competitive spirits that this competition elicited. The Linguistics Olympiad is an international competition held annually that dates back to 1965. Should you wish to learn more about this event you can find more information on Uklo. org. We are grateful to the organisers in the UK for allowing us to join all the way from Thailand. It is our pleasure to announce this year’s winners below by year group. Winning teams and individuals will be awarded trophies on our return to school. Year 6: Éclair, Minnie, Tete, Kwankao Year 7: Kaohom, Patrick and Mimi Year 8: Nammon, Gao, Ajen, Phupha

Recently, three of our wonderfully talented and committed prep students recorded some exceptional achievements. Shin (K6), Tang (S6) and Proud (C7) have each dedicated a huge amount of time and interest to this and have exceeded expectations by achieving their Bronze awards already. Proud has also achieved the Silver award. Their achievements are fantastic and are testament to some of the excellent work being done whilst being educated online. Eoin Shannon Head of Computing Tang (S6): “My favourite iDEA badge was the animation badge and the hacker badge. I like iDEA because it is fun and teaches you through engaging ways.” The Duke of York Inspiring Digital Enterprise Award (iDEA) is an innovative Badge Store concept that helps students develop skills. ‘Badges’, which are mapped against the National Curriculum and the Skills Framework for the Information Age, can be online or real-world experiences which unlock points

Shin (K6): “iDEA is like a fun and interactive learning platform which teaches you the basics of Computing and also E-Safety, the Brain and Coding (and even further). I find it really fun and enjoyable. My favourite badges were the Worker ones, which gives us examples on how we can use basic Computing in real life.”

Despite the period of online learning, the Upper School’s commitment to implementing the High Performance Learning (HPL) framework into the Upper School and providing staff training has continued throughout Term 2 and 3. Working with students in Term 2a, members of the HPL steering group simplified and adapted the Advanced Cognitive Performance skills (ACPs) and Values, Attitudes and Attributes (VAAs) terminology in order to make it more user friendly and meaningful. In addition, they created their own innovative Thinking Skills (ACPs) and Performing Skills icons (VAAs) which have already started to be used throughout the Upper School; in lessons to signpost the systematic teaching and deliberate practice of the skills, in our literature to illustrate our commitment to HPL and next term,

throughout our learning environment. During the May INSET day, Upper School teachers focused on developing their understanding of the HPL strategies, familiarising themselves with our new teaching and learning cycle, which combines a range of current pedagogical thinking, and the vision for developing HPL consistency in lessons and drawing on HPL strategies throughout the Upper School. Teachers completed online training, which involved viewing a series of videos outlining the work of the HPL steering group and next steps. It was delivered by members of the team and feedback opportunities were provided to harness further ideas. This was a highly successful, inventive method of teacher training and welcomed by the teachers.

UPPER SCHOOL AND BEYOND

The introduction of the HPL framework at Harrow Bangkok has provided us with opportunity. The opportunity for teachers and departments to review and creatively tweak their curricula and teaching resources, the opportunity to upskill with regards to current pedagogical thinking and neuroscience

7billionideas Students in the Upper School have been provided with outstanding opportunities to practice and develop their High Performance Learning (HPL) skills through our formal partnership with the awardwinning ideas company, 7billionideas. With one of the desired outcomes of HPL that students become enterprising learners, undertaking carefully compiled entrepreneurial courses dovetails beautifully with the HPL philosophy. Working with David Harkin, we have collaborated to deliver a series of online courses throughout the period of closure to provide our students with varied online learning opportunities and situations in which they can develop their thinking and performing new skills. Prep phase students undertook the #Harrow Ideas project. Over the course of 3 days, they worked independently to come up with an idea which would change the world. They then had to design a prototype and a marketing strategy for their product. The work produced was of an incredibly high standard and Lin C8 was awarded the number 1 idea by David Harkin and his team.

At the end of April, Year 9 and 10 students took part in the HomeHack course which was a virtual, blended learning course which provided students with an opportunity to join live seminars while working on entrepreneurial tasks offscreen.

11

UPPER SCHOOL AND BEYOND Last week, Year 11 and 13 students were introduced to David Harkin’s new course: Embrace: Being World Class. Students were provided with the opportunity to participate in a self-paced online course which focused on listening to inspiring TED Talks, videos from 7billionideas and a series of self-reflective assignments. We very much look forward to further cementing our relationship with 7billionideas in the future in order to provide our students with further enterprise and innovation opportunities as well as to hopefully welcome David and his team back to Harrow Bangkok next school year. Day started with an introduction to HPL concepts to engage students with their learning journey. They were introduced to the HPL framework and rationale, the way their memory works and the Thinking and Performing skills that they need to develop through deliberate practice. During each Challenge Day, students were asked to choose their topic from a series of research or practical questions and to work with an online tutor throughout the day. They had to use their meta-thinking skills to create a plan and organise their time, their linking and analytical skills to research their topic and their creative skills to produce a product of their choosing to demonstrate their mastery of the topic. Underpinning these crucial thinking skills, was the ability to be agile in their approach, by enquiring, taking risks and being open-minded. Each student was provided with a grade for their effort based on their planning, research, product outcome and ability to reflect on their learning. The ability to reflect is another important trait that we want to develop in our students as self-regulation and metacognition are crucial to life-long success. The highest achievers were students who demonstrated that they were hardworking, able to persevere and be resilient during their learning process. The work that was produced on the day was diverse, creative, exciting and innovative and we would like to commend all the students who engaged with their chosen topics and during the tutorials. At the end of the day, it was a pleasure to listen to the students as they talked confidently about their work on Zoom, demonstrating intellectual confidence in their chosen topics. Harrow Bangkok teachers and students have benefited hugely from the use of technology these past few months. Google Classroom, Zoom, and Classkick are now household names and we have certainly grown a little more dependent on our devices. Although we are grateful for this privilege it is also a relief that, with the summer holidays approaching, we can have less screen

A study conducted in the UK by the National Literacy Trust found that talking together as a family at mealtimes boosts children’s confidence. 40,000 children aged 8-16 completed a questionnaire in their classrooms to rate their confidence in communication. The results suggest that some two-thirds (62%) of those who talk daily with their families at mealtimes feel confident to speak in

Some three-quarters (75%) of those who chat at family meals said they felt confident to join in class discussions, compared with 57% of those who sit together to eat but never or rarely talk and just under two-thirds (64%) of those who don’t sit down for meals (see Figure 1). Since joining Harrow Bangkok four years ago I have been continuously amazed by the academic abilities and work ethic that our students have. However, having been involved in guiding students with their applications to study Medicine, I would like to see our students have more confidence, more flexible thinking and a stronger ability to communicate their ideas verbally. In Thailand and the UK, the main aim of a medical interview is to find out how well the student communicates. The interviewers want to hear the student show creativity, demonstrate empathy and solve problems. The ability to have a critical discussion with an adult is also vital for any student wanting to study at Oxbridge. Parents of Harrow Bangkok, we need your help, and it starts around the dinner table! The questions here complement our High Performance Learning (HPL) initiative and can help move away from the age-old question ‘How was school today?’ to engage our children in some deeper thinking. You may be surprised at what they come up with!

I for one cannot wait to hear the laughs, cheers and banter coming from our common room. Whilst the boys have been away, the Bradbys team have been busy improving the house; Mr Max has completed the Accelerated Reader board, Mr George has put up some inspirational quotes, Mr Michael has contacted Bradbys Harrow on the Hill, while Mr James has dusted off our House Shirt and framed it. It all looks amazing. However, the Bradbys household are really missing you and wanted to tell you why; Sand whistling his latest tune, Tle’s dancing (he’s good!), Song, Best and Billy’s nightly noodle feasts, Fergus and Eugene’s battles at chess, Phoenix’s sense of humour, Ong’s amazing cakes, Man U and Nat’s legendary pillow fights, Pavis, Daniel, Ice, Pete and Neo’s nightly football in the Sports Hall (and discussing how Liverpool won’t win the PL title), Mack for his swimming devotion, Three and Tom for their

STEP IN TO BOARDING LIFE West Acre has felt eerily quiet since the girls left so we have kept ourselves busy preparing for their return, whenever that will be. Soon we hope, as we miss the sound of chatter and laughter and even the battle to make sure that all devices are handed in before bedtime! In our free time, we have walked around the school field, again and again, grabbed a bike to expend pent up energy, jumped around our rooms to fitness videos and practised yoga to maintain calm during this challenging time.

Needless to say, the West Acre team have kept each other company whilst maintaining social distancing and we have managed to keep our spirits up often sharing ideas for recipes and discussing the merits of using alternative ingredients during baking. Some of us have even tried our hand at painting (with mixed results!). Maybe some of these creations will find themselves on the walls of the boarding house? You will have to wait and see. Keeping in close contact with family and friends has been crucial during this time and we are comforted in the fact that all is well back home and contacting the girls via video conferencing has#yearfourontour been a delight for us all. #bornready We cannot wait to see them all again. The Grove has a pulse once more! Thank goodness we are going to end this year with boarding students back in our boarding village; the place has a pulse once more! It has been fantastic to see our Bradbeians, West Acreans and Grovites in their houses and quickly finding their feet after three months away. The village atmosphere has been buoyant; we have a vibrant and bubbly community once more. These past few months have allowed us all time to reflect on what a special place our boarding village is when it is full of students. We look forward to welcoming the full complement of our boarders back when the academic year commences in August. We say a sad goodbye to our year 13 Grovites; Brian, Josh, Jaehwan, Henry, Nadol, Trey, Andy, Perry and Phukhao who move onto the next exciting episodes in their lives. You have been a joy to know and we will miss you greatly. Come back and pay us a visit when you have the chance. You will always be welcomed

with open arms. We say goodbye to Scott Childe and Toby Hunt, our two grad leaders, who have given invaluable service to our boarding community and more specifically our Grove family. Toby begins his PGCE teacher training course at Cambridge University this September. You will be a credit to the profession. Hopefully we will see you back within these walls one day. Scott is going to take his time to consider his next move. His enthusiasm for media and all the fantastic contributions he made in this area for the school has been greatly appreciated. We wish you all the very best. Finally we say goodbye to Miss Harshida who will transition out of boarding into an Upper School cover and library support role next term; heartfelt thanks for all you have done supporting our boarders these past three years. Kosumruamchai Community Project

During this incredibly difficult time, staff at Harrow Bangkok have been supporting a project to help those in the community surrounding the school. The project has involved collaboration between school staff, community leaders and the district authorities. Three initiatives were set up in three different locations so that we could reach as many people as possible. Every Tuesday and Friday 100 meals were prepared and distributed from a noodle shop on Soi 8. On a Wednesday 300 meals were distributed from a community sala just beyond Soi 19 and a food pantry was set up outside of Green Bears cafe on Soi 24. In total an astounding 137,200 baht was donated by staff from across the school, which enabled two of the initiatives to run for 5 weeks and provided 2500 freshly cooked, nutritious meals. The food pantry has been stocked with essential items such as rice, eggs, oil and sanitary products and will remain in place. Some of the donations have been used to keep this stocked over the weekends. This project would not have been possible without the kindness and generosity of staff and support from the community. The district officials have ensured that social distancing, temperature checks and hand sanitisation have been in place throughout. The community leaders gave additional support by delivering food to people who were not able to attend the sala due to illness or infirmity. Extra thanks go to Kru Nang, as this whole project wouldn’t have been possible without her support, her understanding of the local area and her willingness to translate for us. If you would like to help please continue to support the food pantry. Sarah Bannister Assistant Head of Prep phase

Drive-through library service - a roaring success! the way to engage students to make the best use of the school’s assets. We are looking forward to going to school to pick up some books.’ Harrow Bangkok parent ‘I visited your drive-through library this afternoon and returned all of the overdue books I have borrowed previously. I also returned the book Raeden had borrowed.

Harrow Bangkok’s drive-through library service during the lockdown has been a ROARING success with parents and children. From the Little Lions to the Senior Cubs, library staff have sustained Harrovians’ voracious appetite for reading. Now in its 9th week, the service has led the way for Bangkok schools by venturing into the unchartered territory of providing a Library service during a period of sustained lockdown. Harrow Bangkok has stoked up the passion for reading by establishing simple and strict procedures that allow parents and students to order up to 12 books online from any of our 3 catalogues for an extended period of loan.

Whole School Harrow 2 Harrow House Competition

During unprecedented times and in the face of challenge and uncertainty, Harrow Bangkok always comes together to become even stronger. At the heart of this special community lies the House system, universally understood and respected by all those who don their House colours each week. The passion and dedication our students devote towards House competitions is unmatched, but one very new House event has brought that competitiveness and togetherness to a whole new level. The inaugural whole school Harrow 2 Harrow Race encourages students, parents and staff to participate in physical exercise. The goal is to become the first House to navigate the distance from Harrow Bangkok to Harrow on the Hill in London, a distance of roughly 11,500km! Each participant can walk, run, cycle or even swim, and distances are combined for each House. The uptake by the Harrow Bangkok community has been phenomenal, with each House vying for first place.

The race was neck and neck all the way to the finish line, but who will be crowned champions? You’ll have to wait until Speech Day to find out! In the end, the most important message is that we got there together. Lawrence Prunty Head of Byron House

Before we began this project, no one had ever built Harrow Bangkok in Minecraft, let alone any video game. Thus, we saw this as an opportunity to make our mark in the school’s rich and vibrant story as we approach our final year of Sixth Form. We knew since even before the project’s inception that building the entire campus on a 1 to 1 scale was nigh impossible given the rather blocky graphics and dimensions of Minecraft’s gameplay. Therefore, we were tasked with the challenge of making the different hallways and classrooms around the school as accurately as possible, all the while having to consider the reduction of space and capability for detail. Even with eight builders working on the project, it was a most arduous effort for everyone involved, with work having to be split into specialised roles. For example, some were tasked with technical aspects such as command block manipulation and Redstone engineering, while others were responsible for ensuring accuracy and the attention to detail of each building. Furthermore, despite all of our team members being very familiar with the school, one of the greatest challenges was finding reference pictures for all areas of the campus to aid us in building the campus accurately and to scale. Regardless of role, each team member has contributed tirelessly in ensuring that the anticipation from both teachers and students will not be let down. On behalf of the HarrowCraft build team, we hope this creation of ours will be able to entertain and provide a medium where students and staff can meet in a time where our community is separated under social-distancing measures. Gratitude Gratitude is a wonderful thing. Research has shown the positive effects of gratitude exercises, so it is scientifically advised that we regularly remind ourselves of the things and people we are glad of. One of the many things I am grateful for is our kind-hearted ‘Anti-Loneliness Leaders’. These students volunteered to keep in regular contact with their classmates while we have been physically distanced. A massive Orange thank you to Alice, Brendan and Nicha (So6), Baikaew and Only (So7), Jaja, Kla, Pin D and Pin T (So8), Edward, Jinny, Mark and Reawya (So9), Andy and Unite (So10), Kevin, Ploy and Tara (So11), Golf, Pont and PunPun (So12) and Fern, Prem and Serene (So13). The gratitude does not stop there. Here are a selection of things Sonakul students have been grateful for during this difficult time: ‘My mum because she is always there to support me and I always talk to her about my problems because she knows me best.’ ‘I think all my teachers are very caring, so I feel very comfortable talking to all my teachers.’ ‘I’m really grateful for my history teacher! Looking back I wouldn’t have made any of the choices I’m making now if I didn’t like their class so much.’ ‘My friends’ messages; they really kept me company and made my quarantine time not as boring and lonely as it would’ve been.’ ‘My family because they are always there for me and support me in everything.’ ‘My best friend because she is one of the most supportive people I’ve ever met and she makes me feel comfortable and content with being who I am.’ ‘My really good friend for being someone I can talk to.’ ‘The Lazada shipping man! Shipping me random stuff I brought from Lazada…’ I think we are all grateful for the holidays - have a fantastic break and see you in August ready for 2020-21! Mr Dodds Head of Sonakul

The wonderful Churchillian family spirit has continued throughout the lockdown. Some of the highlights and memorable times will be the fabulous Churchill leadership quizzes and games during House registrations every week. The Churchilian teachers often getting more competitive than the students! The lovely Churchill T-shirt throwing video that was shared on social media. #Churchill bringing smiles. A new experience for all, lockdown has taken some adjustment. There have been many positives that have come from these weeks and Churchillian’s have been reflecting on who they feel grateful for during this time: ‘I’m grateful for my parents, they have been really supportive.’ ‘I am grateful for amazing friends I have.’ ‘Family --> They listen to my worries and give me advice too.’

L L I H C R ‘I’m really grateful for the people around me who have been keeping in contact or even asking me for advice. I don’t usually call people, these people giving me a call to rant about something or to have a chat is something I really appreciate. I’m also grateful for the fact that we are still doing fine in a situation that can clearly be so hard for someone as we see in the news and that we have that opportunity to share what we have to those people.’ ‘My friends because they are always there for me when I’m bored.’ ‘Friends because they keep me away from being lonely.’ Churchillian’s well done for your resilience, we look forward to us all being back together again soon! The ‘Purple People’ have lived by the slogan ‘apart but never alone’ during the lockdown. We have enjoyed our time together during House registrations with the creative and enthusiastic ideas of the leadership team, as well the afternoon tutor sessions. All year we have focused on the importance of looking for positives and here are a few examples of what Suriyothai are grateful for during our time away from school. • ‘I have widened my friendship circle’ • ‘I am grateful for time to read my favourite book’ • ‘I get to bake more!’ • ‘I am grateful to my tutors for their daily catch ups with the form’ • ‘A huge thank you to my teachers for their hard work!’ • ‘Thank you to the leadership team for making us laugh and showing us Tofu the dog videos in House registration’ • ‘I have spent more time with my family!’ • ‘I am very grateful of the doctors and nurses who are working hard in the pandemic’ Our family spirit has been fantastic the past 10 weeks and we are always looking out for one another. Development Swimming Year Overview The last year has been very different to what the Development Swimming Team had envisioned for this academic year. Nevertheless, our young swimmers have adapted to the new normal for our sport excellently, continuing to demonstrate their high levels of dedication their learning and development. In Season One, our young Lions competed in range of different swimming competitions across Bangkok including 2Fast2Furious, ISB Swimfest and Puppy Cup. At each of these events the consistent hard work and effort the young swimmers put into their training was rewarded by many significant achievements through new personal bests and heat winner rewards. A notable success for the Development Swimming Team was our 3rd placing in the overall team category at the Puppy Cup competition; a fantastic achievement for the 51 swimmers involved in this event.

Throughout Season Two and Three, the Development Swimmers quickly adapted to our new normal in swimming by engaging in our online training community. During this time, the swimmers completed daily fitness workouts focused on improving essential fitness components for swimming. Additionally, the swimmers also completed weekly challenges and designed their own fitness workout videos. All of these activities supported the swimmers in maintaining and enhancing their physical fitness whilst also engaging with their fellow swimmers. The coaching team have been extremely impressed by the development swimmers’ high level of commitment and dedication to their online training! I would like to say a huge well done to all of the Harrow Lions Development Swimmers for all of your hard work and achievements throughout this year and a big thank you to our swimming parents for your continued support! I wish you all a safe and enjoyable summer break and I am looking forward to welcoming you back in August. Hollie Brewer Head of Development Swimming

Football’s 2019-20 The 2019-2020 season had its up and downs for many reasons and they have tested the resilience within the academy. Our season started off with a staggering fifteen percent of the school population enrolling in the Football Academy. September came along with our first tournament away from Harrow Bangkok. Unfortunately this event had to be cancelled halfway through due to torrential rain. October was the month our varsity football teams came together to participate in BISAC. Coming off the back of being crowned champions the previous year, our girls were going into this year’s tournament feeling confident. Sadly we lost in a hard-fought semi-final to NIST who amusingly we beat in the final the previous year. Along came November, our busiest month of the year. Filled with tournaments taking place every weekend, most notably of which was the Harrow Bangkok Youth Cup with over 1,200 students participating on our world-class facilities. Christmas came and went with January delivering our prestigious international football tournament. Even this tournament came with its complications; AQI was playing havoc with fixtures during this period with many events having to be cancelled. Fortunately for us we had a break in the weather and were able to put on the best school football tournament in Asia, something we should all be proud of. From then onwards things went from worse to worse with COVID-19 causing everything to shut down. One thing I have learned through all these adversities, whatever is thrown our way we always seem to rise to the occasion and deliver in a fashion that is unprecedented: Go Lions! Next year promises to be another exciting year for our students with the introduction of a new 9 a-side football tournament in March for varsity boys and girls. Harrow Bangkok Premier League didn’t have the opportunity to start this year but, all being well, this will take place next year. I am delighted to announce two female coaches will be joining the academy along with a new coach as we say goodbye to Coach Martin this year. I would like to finish off by thanking Coach Martin for all his hard work over the years at Harrow Bangkok. Not only has Martin been instrumental in developing girls football within the academy but he has also been actively involved in various dance productions. As of next year, Martin has taken up the role as head of football at another international school in Bangkok. I am sure you will join in by wishing Martin all the very best with his new venture. The Golf Academy’s 2019-2020

This year has truly been unique and not one that will hopefully be repeated in the near future. However, it has given our Harrovian golfers another chance to showcase their determination, resilience and creativity in new and exceptional ways. During the lockdown period, as most other people globally have had to, they have adapted their learning and purposefully practise. Without access to the fantastic facilities the academy has, they have designed brand new ways to develop and refine their skills, whilst also having fun along the way creating fun and inventive trick shots. Success at an elite level continues within the Golf Academy with students moving through the pathways onto the development team and progressing to the elite team, with more students than ever representing the school at SEASAC and due to represent the school at both FOBISIA and BISAC. With Myanmar the destination for SEASAC, our students were excited to experience the culture and fantastic course, Pun Hlaing. The course and the hosts did not disappoint and neither did our tremendous golf team who, although are still very young, are being, deservedly, recognised as formidable opponents. The girls team saw the addition of two new members, Prim (C10) and Pin (So8). Both girls performed outstandingly well with Pin, the youngest member of the team, finishing an excellent 13th place, one place behind teammate Tienhom (C10). A fantastic performance in her first varsity golf competition. Penguin (C10) and Prim (K10) showed tremendous mastery of their technique throughout the two days play however, both needed to show new depths of grit and determination playing down the 18th hole. Under immense pressure, both needed to make par to secure a one-two finish respectively, with the positions reversed from the previous year. Both girls held their composure and secured a 1st and 2nd place finish individually and 1st place overall for the girls team. Not to be outdone, the boys finished in third place overall for the team competition thanks to an amazing performance from Tawan (C11) across the two days who

26

finished second overall. Unfortunately, this year we have to say goodbye to two amazing Year 13’s who have been incredible ambassadors for both Harrow Bangkok and the game of golf. Pat (K13) and Pooh (S13) have been outstanding players and a phenomenal part of the team, supporting and inspiring younger players through their hard work and leadership. More importantly, they have enjoyed every minute and brought fun and enjoyment to everyone around them. We wish you the very best in your future. Well done to all students in the Golf Academy for your hard work, determination to master your skill, your successes and most of all your resilience. Mr Kench Head of Golf Academy Assistant Director of Sport

Golf at Harrow Bangkok is available to everyone. Whether you play on a regular basis or have never played before, there is a pathway for you and you are always more than welcome to come and give it a go.

Gymnastics Academy

overview of the year

There will be obstacles, but with hard work and teamwork...there are no limits! During 2019/2020 we sadly missed out on many events, however we would like to take a moment to provide an overview of the successes we did manage to achieve this year. From development, all the way through to our elite squads it has been most rewarding to see our gymnasts make a real commitment towards improving apparatus technique, body strength and self-confidence. Starting with the Parents Open Skills Day; the academy opened its doors to enable viewers to learn more about gymnastics and attempt some of the skills. This is always such a great event, especially when it finishes off with a fun pool party! Following this was the In-House Competition where the Thai judging association provided constructive feedback to our competition squads just in time for their major tournaments!

Games. For their debut, it was pleasing to hear their refined technique was even mentioned by other schools! Harrow Fair is always a great opportunity to showcase material for our annual gym show. This year was based on the 2020 Olympics ‘Unity’. We were so fortunate to at least perform routines to represent Thailand, India and Brazil. With the hard work and dedication, I could only imagine the rewards Harrow Bangkok would have achieved if competitions and events had continued this year.

The first competition this academic year was FOBISIA where Harrow Bangkok achieved a jaw-droppingly high number of individual, all-round and team medals. Our seniors became Level 3 champions and Nara (Y5) was our very first L3 Senior all-round apparatus champion.

I would also like to take the time to say a massive thank you to the Gymnastics coaches and good luck to Miss Cat who is scheduled to leave this year. She has contributed greatly to the running of the academy and has achieved great work particularly with the development group. Miss Cat has been a lovely addition to the team and will be missed. Thank you Miss Cat and the best of luck with completing your PGCE back in the UK.

Our development team showed excellent commitment and enjoyment towards their first competition Bambi

Gymnastic Online Training Warning a gymnast could flip at any moment… keep a safe distance! It has been a strange couple of months not seeing a busy gymnastics room full of our talented, eager-tolearn gymnasts. Nevertheless, the gymnast’s commitment has been very impressive! This has still been a productive time for our Gymnasts physical development as we’ve focused our sessions on body control, muscle strengthening and physical coordination. Gymnasts have had the option to either: 1. Complete and upload weekly fitness and skill-based challenges via Google Classroom 2.Take part in daily live Zoom sessions, available to all academy squads. Miss Natalie and Miss Cat have certainly enjoyed modelling the gymnastics material and providing specific feedback on the skills each gymnast has managed to replicate.

Gymnastics online training has focused on: Balance Setting challenges to teach gymnasts to focus on body positions, technique and body control. This will help gymnasts learn advanced skills on all apparatus when they return to training in school. Artistry Artistry is all about musicality, overall performance and dance movements during a gymnast’s performance. Therefore, we have set leap and jump challenges as well as a variety of short routines that combine both dance and gymnastics skills. Parent and gymnast paired tasks Parent involvement has been one of the highlights during this time. It’s great for role modelling, motivation, developing teamwork/relationships, boosting our student’s confidence and support. I would like to thank all parents during this time for their support keeping the gymnasts motivated with their training Natalie Greenidge Head of Gymnastics

Performance Swimming Online Training Swimming is a sport where the swimming pool is an essential element therefore, when the pools were closed in March, we faced a tremendous challenge. During this difficult time, the team goal was to ensure swimmers remained fit and healthy through individual training at home, whilst also maintaining a strong team bond as teamwork is at the very core of the swimming team. At the beginning, the main aim was to minimise the loss of fitness during this period but we soon realised that this time could be better used to positively reinforce the abilities and fitness components that are essential for competent swimmers including co-ordination, core strength, joint mobility, flexibility and muscular elasticity. Considering this, our training became focused on dry land fitness sessions as many of our performance swimmers were unable to access to a private and safe pool. The sessions were divided into three different types: • Cardio: Swimmers worked on their cardiovascular endurance whilst trying to improve their coordination and agility at the same time. • Dry-land swimming and core: Swimmers worked on their strength and body position in the water through isolated movements for each different stroke.

28

• Joint mobility: Swimmers worked on their flexibility and muscle elasticity, trying to improve their range of movement in their joints. As well as all these sessions, the swimmers also completed two extra tasks: • Challenge of the day: Swimmers competed against each other trying to achieve the highest score possible in one specific competitive swimming aspect. • Video analysis: Swimmers had to analyse the swimming videos covering starts, turns, side view and front view in different strokes and answer questions. The commitment and attendance of the performance swimmers to all these sessions was fantastic and I am very proud of the high number of swimmers that engaged with the online learning during this difficult period of time. The swimmers even kept training as normal during the Songkran holidays which shows great levels of dedication and motivation to continue to develop and improve in their sport. It is this attitude that makes the coaching team so proud of the swimmers. A special mention to parents for their unconditional support, without their help we could not achieve everything we have done during this period! Thank you team. Head of Elite Swimming Coach David

The Tennis Academy roundup of the year The Tennis Academy season in 2019/2020 has been an anticlimax to say the least. In Season 1 we had our U13 teams compete in the annual BISAC singles, doubles and team events. The boys featured two teams showing good depth for the future; the girls entered with one team. Both boys teams fought hard in their matches showing good team spirit. With more exposure to tournaments like BISAC, the boys could hold many tournament titles in the future. The girls team, however, went one step further than last years disappointment of being runners up and defeated NIST to becomes U13 BISAC Champions 2019! Well done to both Ellie Therdkiet and TT Lithiby who won the girls doubles event and TT Lithiby who won the U13 singles event; a superb end to the U13 season.

Wishing everyone a safe and happy summer holiday, looking forward to seeing everyone back in August.

Danai Downer Head of Tennis Academy

Unfortunately, all events in season two and three had to be cancelled which was a real shame. We had a very strong U15 and varsity team ready to compete in BISAC and SEASAC events and I’m sure they would have been placed on the podium. A big thank you to those who participated in the online challenges and home workouts during this very difficult time. I am sure you are all back out on court now and working hard on your skills for next term. We say farewell to our graduates Pham and Serene who have been instrumental leaders in our tennis teams and community. They have both been part of some historical victories in BISAC and SEASAC and created some wonderful memories with the team. The Harrow Bangkok Tennis Academy wishes them all the very best in their next adventure.

COVID-19 reflections The Heroes I once knew of a time Where heroes would Ride on horseback, Armour glimmering in The glow of the setting sun, And rewarded for slaying. Now the only armour these heroes have are White masks, White gloves, White coats, While their hearts are full of gold. The battle they fight is greater than any conflict, Against an invisible enemy Amidst the masses, Regardless of race, religion Or classes, But by the efforts of these heroes, From crisis, hope will rise, From tragedy comes unity, From darkness, the light will shine through. Future generations From now will surely see, The sacrifices they gave In protecting you and me.

Covid-19 Reflections Poem I have to stay in my house There’s barely any times when I go outside I can’t go to school My friends are not by my side Although they live down the street I can’t go say hi I can’t give them a hug I barely see them pass by Meanwhile, in my house We go into the pool I was glad I could do that again Since I broke my finger at school In my house We also play ping pong I play with my dad And my game is getting more strong I am aware that in other places People are having a hard time When we’re complaining In the meantime In the news I Saw a refugee camp With too many people And the floor was damp Little space to live But the area is vast Sadly with too much people The virus could spread fast I hope for that they will stay Healthy and see their friends And this whole thing will Soon come to an end And I know that things May seem a little abnormal, But I hope I can go back to school And everything will return to normal Natalie Burke (N6)

And now they face their greatest battle of the century, Another global war begun Against the enemies of good health They know their duty, yet However hard the battle, they Always fight and Never quit so our Kin can live in peace. Your fight is for our future, and for that we Owe you eternally. Undeterred are your efforts, so unparalleled may our gratitude be. Not all heroes wear capes; Some wear stethoscopes. Tonmai (K12)

Chris Johnson & Liz H A fond farewell from

ammond

‘It’s such a perfect day, we’re glad we spent it with you….’ As some of you may already know, this is our last year at Harrow Bangkok and we will be leaving at the end of this term as Director of Music and Director of Development. After 17 years, we know that Harrow Bangkok is a very special place indeed and we would have loved to have stayed for longer with you. We could not have asked for a better group of wonderful students to collaborate and work alongside, creating some of the most memorable moments we have ever experienced in our professional careers. Sometimes opportunities come knocking on the door when you least expect them, and such an opportunity has arisen for both Liz and myself. I have been asked to head up a new Academy of Music as their newly appointed Executive Director of Music opening in Chiang Mai at the beginning of the new academic year, and Liz is also taking up a similar new post with the same organization as Director of Development. We both are very excited about our new roles, though it goes without saying, it has truly been an amazing 17 years which have gone in the blink of an eye, but the memories will last forever. It has been an honour and privilege to spend this time with you and we wish you all continued success and particularly happiness. A school is a community which is greater than the physical buildings in which it inhabits. Though our campus and buildings are amazing, what shines out for all to see at Harrow Bangkok is excellence and passion in all levels and phases of the school, working together as a team and creating an environment and ethos where all students and staff are continually improving the future. In the words of Steven Covey, we hope that you will continue ‘To Live, To Love, To Learn and To Leave a Legacy’. We hope that you will also never stop improving the future and importantly, whatever the future may hold for you, always remember to keep a healthy work-life balance and to laugh lots! Dear Chris... messages from Harrovians It has been an amazing experience to work with you and I have learnt so much from you. I will never forget how you brought my musical ideas to life in the grandest manner. I know wherever you go you will be amazing x best of luck! Anna Henretty-Dunsire It’s the little things with Chris - a friendly hello, a little postcard of thanks or a big hug after a holiday. I hope your heart is happy and your talents appreciated wherever your life takes you! Asha Stokes Mr Johnson was not only a teacher but a mentor to me. He has influenced me so much and guided me to a successful career in music, after Harrow Bangkok. I will never forget all that he does for the Harrow Bangkok community and the memorable times we shared the stage together. Good luck Mr. Johnson! I wish you the very best and that you continue to inspire those around you. Belle Class of 2012 Chris thank you so much for the personal welcome you have extended to me at the Music Department ever since I came here. It has been really fantastic to see the pupils doing music close up, and I have really enjoyed all of our concerts and rehearsals. You are a master at presenting the school, and there have been many highlights. I particularly enjoyed the two Christmas concerts that I was involved with and also being a part of the snacking culture in the small breaks. I wish you all the best in your new adventure and look forward to hearing about it. Ben Stainer I met Chris when he first arrived in 2006 and worked alongside him in the developing days of HIS at Don Muang until July 2011. As Director of Music, a quote he made in the 2006/07 edition of The Lion said: ‘Whatever the future may hold, it is the responsibility at Harrow Bangkok to provide a platform for musical excellence and promote an atmosphere which encourages pupils to want to deliver for themselves the sheer joy of music making.’ Chris certainly made

this happen. He set up the foundation for the musical success of the school by instigating a wealth of diverse musical opportunities including the development of the orchestra, a choir, chamber groups, internal concerts, assemblies and competitions to name but a few. Swing into Spring took place as did The Autumn Bash, the annual carol services and House Music Competitions and I’m sure many more events in addition to those. Chris must be greatly thanked for the development of musical activities and success at HIS and will be sorely missed.Good luck in your new job, Chris. You’ll be missed after 16 years at Harrow Bangkok and I’m sure you’ll bring great musical success to your new school. Carole Ann Eastgate Khun Chris, you are the best music teacher and the best conductor ever! I hope you have a wonderful next year and I will miss you! Thank you very much for the amazing things you have done for Harrow Bangkok! Chom What Mr Johnson has done for music at Harrow Bangkok is amazing - especially the Benefit Bash! The vision, enthusiasm and desire to constantly improve was brilliant - so many great experiences and happy memories for everyone involved. Good luck Mr J and I hope to one day catch you in Chiang Mai Chris Roche A man of unbeatable elegance, determination, human touch and grace. His sense of humour and a shared love of dogs have often brightened my days. May the beautiful nature bring freedom and inspiration. Costantina Pederzolli Working with Chris was a joy. When I was flapping about the Speech Day video and asking for the intro to be changed the day before, to fit in with some crackers intro we’d made, he’ d just calmly say ‘no problem’ and make it all magically happen. He and Liz were also incredibly supportive to our family when we needed them as well. A true gent.Hope everything goes amazingly well in Chang Mai. Dave Harrison

CATCHING UP WITH OUR COMMUNITY He might not know me but Mr Johnson would surely remember my older brother, Pawin. He played violin in school orchestra and joined choirs under Mr Johnson’s guidance. Thank you so much for being kind to my brother. He really enjoyed all those time in high school and being part of a school orchestra is something he is always proud of. As for me, Thank you for everything, Mr Johnson. I remember on my last day at Harrow Bangkok, you orchestrated the Phantom of the Opera song at the ending of the ceremony and it always stuck inside my memories because it was the most epic farewell ever. Harrow won’t be the same without you. I hope for the best in the future for you. The song that you orchestrated will always be Harrow Bangkok legacy and of course remained in the heart of many. Fern Class of 2013

One of the best teachers I’ve encountered during my last few years in Harrow Bangkok where I joined the Choir Club. He supported us through many showcases and challenges and I am sure we are all very, very grateful for that. Time flies and it has been 5 to 6 years since I graduated from Harrow Bangkok. After seeing this message all the memories I made in Choir Club came right into my head. Thank you Mr Johnson for making my last few years in Harrow Bangkok a great one and thank you for all your choir tips and tricks especially for me, a person who knows nothing about music. Your journey continues and I wish you will keep spreading music hypes to everyone in Chiang Mai and lastly I wish you all the best in every aspect of life. Cheers! Jacky Class of 2011

It’s inspiring to see the passion and dedication that he puts into his work. You will be missed at Harrow Bangkok! Best of luck to you Chris! Very jealous of the move to Chiang Mai. I hope to be able to visit both you and Liz one day once you’ve settled :) Fred Class of 2013

Chris – a true gent. Harrow Bangkok puts on some spectacular events and at the heart of each is the music. Chris’s enthusiasm, expertise and care is irreplaceable and he, and his musical charges, have brought joy to so many; from the showpiece end of year events to lunchtime concerts (a beautiful idea and in reality – no need for cheesecake, the performances are that good). I also loved his energy in getting 100+ students who were barely awake to get going on House Shout rehearsal pre-8am on Thursdays. Jake Dodds

Thank you for being such a good friend. You are always so thoughtful and kind. I will miss you so much! I can’t wait to hear about your new adventures! Hannah Meltzer I’ll never forget the first time I met you and you so warmly welcomed me into boarding. You made me feel comfortable and so at ease when I first started that it made things easier for me as a new student at Harrow Bangkok. Thank you for helping arrange piano and singing lessons for me and the time you took time out of your busy schedule to give me ideas on how to write my Upper School president speech. So many of my fond memories of Harrow Bangkok and the boarding house are because of the role you played. Thank you for being so kind and welcoming to me. I wish you all the best in your next exciting adventures after Harrow Bangkok Mr Johnson! Isa Class of 2014

Thank you for all of the very memorable musical events that you have organised over the years and for allowing our musicians to shine! All the best, Chris. I’ll miss seeing you around school and our little conversations. Take care and good luck! You have been the ‘face’ of music at the school for so long Chris that it is difficult to imagine Harrow Bangkok without you. There is so much to thank you for be it the orchestral, choral and jazz band performances you have conducted, or the concerts and musical soirees you organised, which were notable for both the music and the cheesecake served during the interval. Your own enormous talent apart, you have a gentle manner, are very knowledgeable and I always enjoyed your company. I wish you every happiness and success in Chiang Mai. Jess Grimshaw

Your musical interlude with us will leave a lasting legacy. You have conducted yourself so well here, may you continue on in your symphony of life with good health, good friends and good music! Jo Khanteetao

The ‘master of music’, Chris is an institution at Harrow Bangkok and will be missed by the whole community. Chris’ musical extravaganzas have been the highlight of the Harrow Bangkok calendar year on year - who can forget concerts by the lake, concerts by the Chao Phraya in Pak Kret, the annual Benefit Bash, lunchtime concerts and even a Christmas carol concert in a beautiful cathedral in Bangkok? Good luck and best wishes Chris in your new exciting adventures in the north of Thailand - I am sure you will love your new home and enjoy the new challenges ahead. Karen Prout

Chris was so welcoming when I joined the school this year. He gave me so much encouragement to continue playing the viola. I have such fond memories of helping out with the Prep orchestra. I’m sorry I didn’t push myself and join in with the chamber orchestra. Good luck Chris, your passion for music will shine out of you wherever you go! Joanne Anson

Chris and I first connected professionally through leadership and coaching training, but in recent years, we have become good friends. Chris, you are the ultimate gentleman, kind, warm and caring. I will very much miss our chats, catch ups over coffee and your wise, measured counsel. I very much value our friendship and hope that our paths will cross again.

Chris, until I came to Harrow Bangkok my cello had been silent for over 15 years. It is thanks to you that I have been coaxed back to it and it is also thanks to you that I have had the wonderful experiences of conducting the Harrow Bangkok Prep and Senior orchestras and also of coaching our wonderful and talented chamber musicians.

Please keep in touch and I wish you all the very best for your new adventures in Chiang Mai. Love Kathryn Gavin x

Always such a gentleman considerate and caring too. Chris wishing you the very best of luck with your new school the students and staff are lucky to have you. Jo Jefferis

You have become a close friend and have also reignited my love of music and music-making, for which I am extremely grateful. Thank you. I wish you every success in your new role - an opportunity to ignite new talent in a new setting. John Tasker

Mr Johnson was always very thoughtful and creative and I very much enjoyed being a part of the school orchestra for 4 years which was an amazing and a unique experience. Paul Lim When I first started working at Harrow Bangkok, Chris was one of the first people to congratulate me on my appointment. He has always been very encouraging of me succeeding within the school. My daughter Katie thinks the world of him and is devastated that he is leaving. Many thanks for everything you have done for my family Chris. You will be much missed by us but we hope that you enjoy your new challenge every bit as much as you have enjoyed your spell at Harrow Bangkok. Paul Willis

So I say thank you for your music for giving it to me. Change the world with your music. The best is yet to come. Pinya Jurgensen Friends of Harrow, Merchandiser Some of my most memorable moments have been created due to music. One example would be a remembrance service. Most of all, I will miss being in your warm company during a school lunch; it always brightened my day. Chris has been a brilliant Director of Music and has taken music at Harrow Bangkok to new heights of professionalism. His love of music can be seen in his dedication and in the innumerable performances both large and small that were put on under his steer. Chris is ambitious in his vision for music whether it with gala performances, musicals or rock concerts. His hard work and dedication have opened the doors for so many students to grow as musicians and perform on a bigger stage – attested to by the number of students who go off to study music at some of the best colleges around the world. Even when faced with challenges which were alien to him – like the immersive promenade performances of The Nativity which required musicians to play in different locations around the school – Chris embraced them with great energy. I will certainly miss him as a colleague in the CPA. Sev Herbert For half an hour once a week I had the pleasure of singing in one of Chris’s choirs. In that short time, those of us present were treated to something very special. Witty repartee, lofty musicianship and a love of the show left us all with a spring in our stride and a tune on our lips for the rest of the day. Wonderful. Chris, I’ll miss the waft of aftershave that always accompanied your arrival in my office. I’ll miss your humour, your wise counsel and your humanity. You are the archetype of a gentleman - a dying breed, someone for all of us to look up to. Thank you. Tim Jefferis He was 1/2 of this dynamic power team. During my time in Harrow Bangkok, Mr Johnson taught me to have patience, endurance as well as leaning me further into my love of music. He is the quieter half of the dynamic duo, but that sure does not mean he doesn’t shine. Mr Johnson (or Chris if I may), I wish you all the best in your next chapter and I’m sure we will meet soon again... Don’t let the sun go down on you ;) Tom Smits Class of 2013

Mr Johnson is very passionate about music. His knowledge of music is endless. Have a question about music? Mr Johnson is your go-to-man! His wardrobe choice is also very suave and classic. Gentlemanly, I might add. Mr Johnson, you are loved by the Harrow Bangkok community, and are yourself a loving, caring person. Wherever your path takes you, I’m sure it will be one of happy experiences. Yim Class of 201 Mr Johnson inspired our music community in so many ways through his passion and care in the little details; it was very heartwarming how he would write us personal handwritten thank you cards after every musical function we performed for - my friends and I have grown quite the collection! Mr CJ taught us the art of conducting and leadership in musical ensembles - a valuable skill I am grateful for, as it allowed me to pursue my musical passion in university. Dear Mr CJ, the first time I joined the choir I was absolutely blown away by Scarborough fair and Bohemian rhapsody. It was the small lunchtime sessions you led with sopranos and altos that sparked my love for choir. By chance I was put in the position of piano/choirmaster for my medics choir in university, and every time I carry out our sessions I always think back to the choir practices you led, and how inspiring you’ve always been. You have taught me so much in choir, and gave me countless performance opportunities that allowed me to grow as a musician. Dear Liz... messages from Harrovians Liz was the first person and smile I saw when I arrived in Bangkok, and she knew my name! Her warmth has never faded. You will be much missed Liz. I have loved our chats and you have provided me with guidance at every stage of my time here. Sending lots of love and good wishes for your next exciting chapter! Xxx Abigail Jevons I will always remember the welcome Liz gave me when I stepped off the plane to embark on my new life in Bangkok with my family. Apart from being extremely tired after a long flight with a 5 and a 7 year old, I was really nervous about whether moving to a new country was the right decision for us. Liz welcomed me ‘literally’ with open arms and gave me a huge hug! She knew straight away how I was feeling and took me under her wing. That act of kindness made me instantly feel at home, knowing that I had come to a place where people were so friendly, empathetic and kind. G ood luck in your new job Liz. You’re going to be fabulous! Thank you for all your support over the years. Alex Costa After stepping off the plane in Bangkok, Liz was the first person our dazed and confused family met. She immediately put us at ease and chatted to the boys as if she had known them forever. She bought them a snack and their nerves melted away! She was not just doing her job though and, throughout the first few months of our new life, Liz was always there with a smile and a genuine interest in what we were doing and how everyone was coping with the changes. She will be missed by our whole family and many other staff and parents, past and present. Ali Veysey I will never forget the how friendly Liz was and how welcomed she made us feel as soon as we arrived at Suvarnabhumi airport. The perfect first impression. Thanks for always being that friendly face around campus! Asha Stokes

CATCHING UP WITH OUR COMMUNITY Liz I am so grateful for the support you gave me early on with the windsurfing start-up – as you know this is something which is close to my heart. Without the encouragement on that I might not have pushed through to make a success of it (although we are just getting started…). The other big factor in working with you was, of course, the Japanese Speech Contest, and the fact that it did not work out when we were right at the point of execution is even now a source of sore regret. However, I felt the support of the Marketing Department in that endeavour was so crucial and thank you for that. Good luck in Chiang Mai – I hope to hear more about your future paths! Ben Stainer I was a boarding house student at Harrow Bangkok for seven years under the supervision of Ms Liz. I have told her that she was my mother while I was away from my real mother. To this day I am so grateful for all her guidance, advice and tough love (I really needed it!). Ms Liz, I hope you all the best in your future. I know you’ll do great wherever you go! And I hope to stay in touch more frequently! Binayak Class of 2014 Liz is my first and most prominent memory of joining Harrow Bangkok. I remember arriving after the long flight to Thailand and seeing her smiling face welcoming some very tired teachers. For me, she is the face of Harrow Bangkok and it just won’t be the same without her. Her caring, warm and compassionate personality ensured we all felt secure that we had made the right decision to join the Harrow family as soon as we had stepped off the plane. Good luck Liz! Harrow will not be the same without seeing your warm and caring smile around the campus. I wish you all the best of luck for your next chapter and I hope realise how much you will be missed by all. I’ve known Liz since she joined Harrow Bangkok in 2006 and worked alongside her until I left in 2011. I remember her professionally mainly in her original role as Head of Boarding at the Don Muang campus. Although boarding had been established at Bangkok Garden, Liz had a vital role to play in developing it further and in establishing new routines and organisation as boarding numbers continued to increase. Her philosophy was to ensure that the Boarding Houses maintained ‘a good solid atmosphere with a delightful social working community within them’ and this certainly was true. Under Liz’s leadership boarding, in every aspect, developed and provided a strong foundation for continuing development. I really enjoyed working with you, Liz and I wish you every success and happiness in your new job. Good luck in the future. Carole Ann Eastgate Hi Khun Liz, I am sad to hear that you are leaving, you are a great person who has changed many amazing things at Harrow Bangkok to be a better world. CATCHING UP WITH OUR COMMUNITY My first memory of Liz is when I stepped off the plane in 2015 with a thousand suitcases. My daughter was a very young baby and my son had just finished Reception. The whole family were bewildered, bedraggled and sleep-deprived! I remember her vivacity and passion from the very beginning. As a family, she took us under her wing, returning to the airport to search in vain for a very special lost teddy bear and acting as a fairy godmother when Cinderella could not go to the ball! I will miss Liz very much both as a colleague and a friend and wish her and Chris all the best for the future. I can’t imagine Harrow Bangkok without you and Chris! You will leave a big big hole in both the school and our hearts. Emily and family x Emily Jones Love her hugs. She is such a warm and loving person. I was under her care during a time in boarding house. It was the best experience ever. I actually saw her many times during my Harrow Bangkok visits after graduation. She remembered me and really is a big supporter of my career when no one really thinks I can accomplish. Can you please add me via Facebook so we can keep in touch? I’m so excited for the journey ahead of you. Best of luck. I’m going to miss your warm hugs. Fern Class of 2013 Ever since my boarding house days, Liz has always been a second mother to me. Liz was the first person I met when I arrived at Harrow Bangkok and she made me feel welcome straight away. Seeing her face on arrival at the airport made me feel so relaxed. I have also had the opportunity to work with Liz whilst running MUN - we couldn’t organise these events without her foresight and imagination, as well as her kindness. Remember that time when we had our very honoured guest speaker for SEASAC MUN - Khun Mechai, and we were petrified about him falling on the stairs going up to the stage? You were there to help and lend your arm for him to lean on - thank you! Good luck in the future Liz. You are Harrow Bangkok - I don’t know what everyone will do without you. Hannah John Thank you for always being there for us, especially when we first arrived. Good luck in your new adventure, I look forward to hearing about it. Hannah Meltzer From the moment I enrolled at Harrow Bangkok and met Ms Liz, she made sure I felt at home, comfortable, and at ease. My time in Harrow Bangkok would not be filled with fond memories and exciting activities if it weren’t for you. I am truly grateful for the time I spent in boarding and at Harrow Bangkok with you Ms Liz. I have so many great memories at boarding from Friday night quizzes, after school baking cookies, weekend shopping trips to different malls as well as late-night girly chats with you in your lovely boarding flat. I fondly remember the times when you had your office for boarders and we’d spend time with you every chance we had - almost every snack and lunch break. I know I definitely took full advantage of it but only because you made it so easy to have a laugh, relax and unwind in what sometimes felt like a stressful situation. Thanks to your insistence on going on the boarding trip cycling around Chatuchak park, I finally learned how to ride a bicycle. I also enjoyed catching up with you and other Harrovians and boarders in London. There aren’t enough words or ways for me to thank you for all that you’ve done to support me throughout my time at Harrow Bangkok and even at university. I wish nothing but the best for you in your next adventure. I look forward to hearing about it. Isa Class of 2014

CATCHING UP WITH OUR COMMUNITY Liz – although it has been hard to forgive Liz for insisting I have a haircut, I think Suze may not have looked at me again without one, so (indirectly) I owe her my life. Harrow Bangkok without Liz is a little like Somtam without sticky rice and, as with Chris, it is hard to imagine the school without them. Hugely generous host, as we all know, a great sense of fun. I still find my blurred recall of their party during my first year one of the more surreal memories of my time here - endless champagne and more seating than a football stadium – yet so ornate and exotic. That lake too! Jake Dodds Your positive energy, warm smiles and kindness have been such an important part of our school community over the years. Thank you for all you have given. I’m going to miss you so much! You’ve shown me nothing but kindness since the first day we met all those years ago. Good luck and take care. James Beere Working with Liz on the Friends of Harrow team since 2014 has been a joy. It helped us strengthen those bonds of friendship over hard work, amazing events and lots of laughs. Wishing you as much fun and success in your next adventure. Janice Hughes You are, by nature, very warm, friendly and personable Liz, and I always found you both welcoming and very easy to talk with. Thank you. The job you have done for Harrow Bangkok is phenomenal! Put simply, you, Liz Hammond, are the reason the number of students has gone up in the last few years. I would also like to thank you sincerely for all the support you have given me over the years, be it with my own children when they were at the school or with the chess tournaments I used to run. Your leaving is a monumental loss to the school. Jess Grimshaw

ers had their feet on their seats - I had never seen anything like it! Liz was incredibly generous with her time, reassuring and wise with her words of wisdom as I visited Thailand for the first time. Wishing you nothing but good for your future Liz xx Jo Khanteetao Thank you so much for all you have done for me this year, especially the on-boarding process. This was so professionally handled but with a nurturing touch as you are so approachable. Good luck Liz, I wish you all the best for the future. Thank you so much for helping me settle in. I hope there’s a ‘Liz’ at your new school! Joanne Anson In my short time at Harrow Bangkok, I have been witness to your energy, commitment and talents in everything that you do for the school. You have an instinctive understanding of what needs to be done and the energy to get it done. I also have huge respect for your down-to-earth approach and the way that you have included both Thai and Western staff in your projects. You will be missed by the school, and by me as a friend. I wish you every success in your new role, where I am sure that you will spread your own brand of professionalism, enthusiasm and all round magic. Good luck! John Tasker

CATCHING UP WITH OUR COMMUNITY Liz and Chris were some of the first people I met at Harrow Bangkok when I came for interview and a subsequent visit. Some of my first memories of Harrow and the warmth of the Harrow community were shaped by these encounters. In the lead up to my arrival, Liz was only an email away, able to answer my many questions and really helped me to settle in. Chris welcomed me warmly into the music department and helped me get involved in performance again. I will never forget my first major Harrow events, the Harrow fair, Gala concert, the Benefit Bash. The sheer wow factor was a result of the dynamic Johnson Hammond duo. You will both be missed! Jonny Liddell From the very first moment I arrived at Harrow Bangkok, Miss Liz and Mr Johnson made me feel so supported and welcomed! They always made time for a chat and constantly kept the whole boarding house entertained with fun games and activities. Good luck with your new adventure, you’ll be missed! Xx Joy Martin Class of 2014 How to possibly put into words how amazing Liz is in just a sentence? She is one of the kindest, wisest, caring, funny, talented and warm people I have ever met. Ms Liz is an incredibly patient and kind woman who is always looking out for the best interests of her students. I feel especially lucky to have had her as a confidant, life teacher, and boarding house mistress for four years at Harrow Bangkok! May this next adventure bring you joy and exciting challenges! I hope your new school knows just how lucky they are to have you. Kalina Class of 2014 A lady with a heart of gold and multi-talented. Over the last 14 years I have worked with Liz, she has taught my youngest son in Pre-K whilst running a boarding house, made Halloween costumes for hundreds of students, organised countless memorable Harrow Bangkok events from balls to Bashes and conferences and been a mother figure to thousands of children who have passed through the school and who still keep in touch with her. Liz has always put children at the heart of her decision-making and is always the most popular member of staff at any alumni event where the topic of conversation is always about life in the boarding house and how loved and cared for they felt. The best event organiser I have ever worked with, Liz always makes it look so easy but, unknown to other staff, she will have worked 18 hour days behind the scenes to ensure the event runs perfectly… We all wish you success and happiness in your new role and life in Chiang Mai- exciting times ahead for both you and Chris. Karen Prout Liz is synonymous with Harrow Bangkok, her warmth and positivity radiate towards everyone and anyone. I can’t remember the first time we met, Liz has always been there. Liz, I will miss your cheerfulness and welcome smile, you have always been there for me and I have always respected your advice and suggestions. As Harrow Bangkok goes, you have been the centre of our community whether it be for students, teachers and parents alike; school events and that eye for detail will be difficult to replicate. I wish you all the very best in Chiang Mai, Prem are very lucky to have you. Thank you for being there for me during all the years we have worked together and I hope to see you soon. She is a wonderful, kind, and lovely woman. Farewell Khun Liz. Time is fleeting, but memories are forever. Korn I would like to wish Miss Liz and Mr J a new lovely journey of their life. Thank you for all the positive energy they bring to our Harrovian community. Looking forwards to meeting up with them soon! Golf Class of 2008 Liz Hammond and the Stalders go back to the very beginning when Ms Liz was a Pre- K teacher at Harrow Bangkok with Michaël Stalder in her class. Her love for children, joy and enthusiasm for community as well as building relationships with people and the school was evident in her Pre-K class and it continued through her years as the Head of Boarding and later as the Head of Marketing and Development. Liz will remain in the hearts of people as one who never took a problem for what it was but went beyond it and around it to see how a situation could be improved. Chris is remembered as someone who is passionate about music and loved seeing people create, excel and enjoy music! The Stalders remember a precious moment when Sam Stalder sent his first piece of his own composition to Mr Johnson to see how it could be used. Sam had already left Harrow Bangkok but wanted to dedicate his first piece to his school of many years. Mr Johnson played Sam’s piece of music at the Spring Bash to honour an ex-student of Harrow Bangkok! We wish Liz and Chris the very best in their next exciting venture knowing full well their new work place will benefit hugely from their dedication, passion and love of community! Ominium optimi!! The Stalders (Budapest) My first memories of Liz are of her approaching me in between classes to ask (or beg?) me

to take part in a marketing shoot. Since then, I’ve had many more wonderful encounters, and each one brings a smile to my face. Thank you for doing all that you have over the years, and not just for me; I truly, truly appreciate it and you. She made sure that it was!Thank you so much for all the help and support you have given my family and I over the last two years of working together at Harrow Bangkok. We hope your next adventure will be stimulating and fun! Paul Willis Thank you very much for everything you’ve contributed to our community. You are an amazing friend and colleague. I will miss you a lot. Good luck for your new journey! Pen

Dear Ms Liz When I close my eyes and think about you, the first image that comes to mind is walking back from school through the leafy paths that lead to the boarding house. There, you would be sitting on the porch, offering us a smile or a conversation, but most importantly, your time. This represents what you have done for us, without fail every single day, on our little walks back, but also whenever we needed a little sunshine or a little warmth far away from home - and sure enough, you became home for us, the sun and rock. Thank you for raising us and being a funny, charming, kind parent to us all. I hope this new adventure leads you and Mr Johnson to many wonderful paths and people, and I hope we see you again soon! Rainy Class of 2014 Liz is an amazing person, someone who you can rely on. You will be missed so much! Rani Grover Forever the queen of ‘cardboardizing’ Harrovians into brilliant billboards, bus advertisements, and teeny trinkets of the 20-year-old house we are proud to call a home because of you. I wish to - for now - send you a small hug through the large success story that is all inside this newsletter. Here’s to you, Miss Liz. Hello lovely Joan! Both of you know this won’t be the last you’ll hear from me! Stay safe for now, catch up next time we talk. And for Chiang Mai; you never know, one day I’ll be at your doorstep, ‘Hello, hello? Propaganda-posed crazy musician/ Emcee that goes rogue, off-script for hire!’ Love you dearly, Richy Class of 2018 I would always remember the support you gave me when I was producing the Speech Day 2018 video, asking me constantly whether I need to access to any location or needed to film a particular group of people and you would get it sorted out in no time and phone me updating me when it has been sorted.

CATCHING UP WITH OUR COMMUNITY Good luck Ms Liz! I will always remember your infectious smile you gave me from when I was still a student to now an alumni. I hope your future shines bright! Ryu Class of 2018 You are amazing and kind! Liz, I wish you have a twilight year and healthy! I love you Saai Busapavanich You were the first Harrow Bangkok face we met when we came through arrivals and we couldn’t have asked for a better welcome! Good luck on your next adventure. I am sure it will be just as an exciting chapter in your lives as this one! You will be missed. Sarah Bannister Harrow’s Boarding House Mum! May your high levels of confidence, support and good humour help as many in your next job as they have here at Harrow Bangkok. Scott Howe I cannot think of anyone with a more positive and creative approach in school than Liz. Whether with words or random acts of kindness, Liz was always capable of bringing warmth or uplifting people’s spirits. Her ideas for marketing the school were both fun and memorable – even iconic with those lions. The success of the Harrow Fairs and of the school balls or alumni gatherings is due to her hard work and dedication. If Liz came calling you said yes because you knew that what she was asking for was for the school and not to satisfy her own ego. Students in boarding will remember her kindness and care as well. Someone will replace Liz in her role but she herself is irreplaceable. Sev Herbert Over the past 14 years in Harrow Bangkok, I can feel that Ms Liz is a teacher with heart. I wish you luck and please always remember that I still care for you forever. Sunet Boonmee Friends of Harrow Vice-Chairperson Dear Liz - Your departure is such an IMMENSE loss for Harrow Bangkok. Your friendly smile has always made everyone around you feel valued and cared for. Just wanted to wish you nothing but the very best. Take care of yourself and I hope our paths cross again. Harrow Bangkok will miss you!!! Suzanne Uthaichalanond (Early Years)

Like many people, I suspect, I first encountered Liz at the airport where she had volunteered herself (typically selfless and pragmatic) to greet the new cohort of staff. The warmth of her welcome, and the help she offered in those first few nerve-wracking days, has stuck with me ever since. Liz is kind, she’s honest, she cares. She also has a great sense of humour - so important in the workplace; I will sorely miss forays into her office for a chuckle and a chin wag. Thank you, Liz and all the best for the future. Thank you, Liz and all the best for the future. Tim Jefferis The Sanctuary of Liz and Chris Liz and Chris were fundamental and unwavering in their support for myself and my family when we joined Harrow Bangkok in 2008. Working so closely with them enables you to see a unique perspective of the wonderful and glorious aspects of Harrow Bangkok life. Privately they are incredibly modest and generous. They surround themselves with wonderful and beautiful things and share these with impeccable hospitality. They are a wonderful team who complement each other so well, the best of friends, true soul mates. Chris has brought exceptional standards to the school performances having established an incredibly professional platform from which to elevate young musicians of all genres and styles. Importantly, Chris, values and champions the musical arts above all else. Demanding yet appreciative, for those students who have been gifted with music, in him they have found both a teacher, mentor and gentleman who is moderate in temperament and consistent in manner. One who champions and facilitates those starting out as much as those at the top of the grades. Chris has left an indelible legacy on the culture of Harrow Bangkok more than any one headmaster can achieve. He’s also pretty resilient in a kayak during a monsoon :) As we all know Harrow Bangkok is a machine and once term starts you have to pick up the pace quickly. Having Liz by my side to guide and advise was an enormous relief. She leads with kindness, good humour and natural savvy. She has an extraordinary depth of loyalty that drives her self-sacrificing approach. Hugely successful yet modest in her ambition, Liz is not one of those types who bulldozer their way through work and relationships to maximise their CV. She also has the wonderful quality of being true to herself - Liz is always Liz whether it’s sitting in her garden, attending a dinner ‘on The Hill’, speaking with parents or

CATCHING UP WITH OUR COMMUNITY hanging out with the students. She never puts on a front and she will always be honest with you, in a really kind way. Most importantly of all is the significance of the impact that Liz has had on the lives of so many children. Whether celebrating the successes and achievements, birthdays, prom, graduation or being there when the chips were down, Liz has been a mother to hundreds if not thousands of Harrovians. She can’t stand confrontation yet she will take on any uncompromising teacher or irrational parent in order to stand by her charges - a tremendous example of duty and honour. She is the sanctuary that so many have required and her impact will have sown seeds of support and compassion that will be with them for life. The real essence of Harrow Bangkok. Sadly, a part of the heart of Harrow Bangkok will be gone but their legacy is there in the foundation of it all. Tim McD Well, where to begin? The beauty about Liz is that she’s had an impact on so many lives without even knowing. Her sitting outside on the bench after school making you feel right at home was just what everyone needed. That little push in the right direction or a simple cup of tea made one closer to where they wanted to be. You’ll always have a special place in my heart Liz. As I said to Chris, I’m sure our paths will meet again - I’ll make sure of it! You’re an absolute gem and I truly wish you all the best. Lots of love, your boy, Tom. ...I hope you don’t mind, that I put down in words... how wonderful life is now that you’re in the world... Tom Smits Class of 2013

Liz and Chris you will be missed . I will always remember the warm emails Liz sent us before arriving in Bangkok and welcoming us off the bus at school. Your legendary new staff parties at the amazing oasis in the city, with endless bubbles! Chris you are an integral part of the Churchill family, always supporting me, the students and staff in bringing together the House spirit, and especially when it came to House Shout! I wish you both all the best for the next chapter in your adventure! Tomoko I met and welcomed Liz in her first year here. Liz is lively lady and I also named her ‘Queen of Games’. Thank you very much for always supporting me both in front and behind the scenes.I wish you all the best. Tul xxx I can’t imagine my 5 years at Harrow Boarding without Miss Liz; she was my home away from home. I truly believe I wouldn’t be the strong person I am today without her encouragement and advice, which I’m very thankful for! Good luck with your future endeavours, Miss Liz! Thank you for all that you’ve done for me, the boarders and the Harrow Bangkok community! Sad to know you won’t be there when I next visit the campus but I know we’ll still find a way to catch up. Lots of love as always! Vanessa Class of 2015

Best of luck Chris and Liz! The Harrovian. 50
