Celebrating our past Refounding our future

Celebrating our Past In 2022, Harrow celebrates 450 years since Queen Elizabeth I granted a charter to John Lyon to build a School on Harrow Hill: an opportunity for us to reflect on four and a half centuries of tradition and excellence. 450 years on, we follow in the footsteps of the Giants of Old, from our founding benefactor himself to Lord Byron, Anthony Ashley Cooper, 7th Earl of Shaftesbury, Jawaharlal Nehru, King Hussein of Jordan, Sir Winston Churchill and the many distinguished Harrovians in all fields of endeavour today. We celebrate their legacies, together with the many unique and cherished traditions that distinguish Harrow and give it the reputation of being one of the finest schools in the world.

HARROW 450 • CELEBRATING OUR PAST - REFOUNDING OUR FUTURE

02/03

Refounding our Future Looking ahead, the Governors have set an ambitious development programme that will celebrate 450 years of Harrow and provide an abiding legacy for decades to come. This programme will see considerable investment in our bursaries and buildings, as well as the preservation of our key historic buildings and innovation in learning and scholarship. In keeping with John Lyon’s original vision, Harrow 450 will support the local community, not just through our bursaries but through access to the School’s new facilities, strengthening our partnerships and benefiting many young people in north London and further afield.

John Lyon founded the School in 1572 with a clear vision to provide a free education for 30 ‘poor scholars’ from the parish of Harrow on the Hill. The School’s bursary provision remains guided by this principle: to enable talented boys from families with limited financial means to benefit from a Harrow education. Over the next ten years, the School aims to increase significantly the opportunities for boys who require financial assistance to come to Harrow. We plan to provide many more full-fee awards for pupils whose backgrounds mean they face significant barriers to progress, while also making the Harrow fee affordable for a much wider range of families.

Our aim is to increase the percentage of boys in receipt of means-tested support from

10% to over 30%

08/09

Churchill Places To coincide with its 450th anniversary, the School is establishing Churchill Places, a new bursary scheme which adds character to academic and co-curricular excellence as a criterion for being awarded a bursary at Harrow. Our vision is to find and nurture boys, through two years at prep school and five years at Harrow, who, in their own way, may one day change the world for the better; boys who, without significant financial support, would not

“When I was awarded my bursary to Harrow, I couldn’t possibly have imagined where it would lead me today. During my time there, I had the joy of playing for the 1st XI football team for three years (winning the league each time), visiting four continents and acting as Head of School for my final year. Seven years on, I am starting the next stage of my journey at Harvard. Who knows where I will be 40 years on – but I do know the bursary I was awarded has already changed the course of my life and opened up incredible opportunities.”

The Harrow Development Trust aims to

raise £10m to fund up to four Churchill Places per year over a period of 10–15 years. With the necessary funding, we will extend the scheme thereafter.

future

Throughout Harrow’s history, transformative construction projects have ensured the margin of excellence that distinguishes a Harrow education. The need for inspiring environments for Harrovians is as important today as it has been for the last 450 years.

Building for the future Foremost among the School’s priorities is the refurbishment of the Shepherd Churchill Dining Hall and the construction of a new state-of-the-art science facility to provide a motivating learning environment for Biology and Chemistry. Later phases include a new sports building and a scheme that will provide safer, more direct thoroughfares across the east side of the Hill,

BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE

Dining

A refurbished dining hall – feeding young minds The Shepherd Churchill Dining Hall, named after notable benefactor Augustus Shepard Churchill, requires a complete overhaul. Originally built in 1976 to feed up to 1,000 boys and staff, it is now catering for over 1,400 people on a daily basis. This substantial refurbishment project will not only meet today’s needs, it will also mean the dining hall can be let out for functions of all types and sizes. It will be specially designed for (concurrent) co-use in the holidays by members of the community who might experience significant barriers to progress, such as looked after children as well as commercial lets for corporate events and summer schools.

20/21

As a central hub where Harrovians gather three times a day, the refurbished dining hall will encourage social interaction and greatly improve their overall mealtime experience

A more efficient layout with step-free access will increase capacity and speed of service, as well as resolving several key operational issues

The improved design will significantly increase its appeal for commercial lettings

This extensive refurbishment will address any condition-related issues and make it serviceable for at least another 40 years

Sports

A sports building worthy of the greats Sport has been at the heart of Harrow life for over two centuries. The current Sports Centre is in need of replacement to be able to meet the needs of a growing 21st-century sports programme. The School has drawn up plans for a substantial new centre to be built in a later phase of development. The new building will provide training facilities worthy of the greats and be widely available for use by our partner schools and the local community.

The School has a long tradition of sporting achievement both in the heritage of modern day sports, and at the highest level within the games themselves. Many Old Harrovians have become celebrated international sportsmen and this sporting excellence continues today. There are numerous others who play or have played sports for universities, clubs and at county level.

The new Sports Centre will include: 1,800 hrs p.a. of community use including significant provision of vital swimming lessons for local primary schools

Two substantial new sports halls

25-metre six-lane competition swimming pool, with a viewing gallery and training pool

State-of-the-art fitness and performance suites

HERITAGE - PRESERVING AND INNOVATING

Preserving our heritage and innovating our spaces

Heritage

Preserving and innovating our spaces The Old Schools project is a timely opportunity to combine the very best of Harrow’s heritage with ground-breaking research and teaching practices in an exciting fusion of the ancient and the modern. Old Schools, the original Harrow School building opened in 1615, now requires attention. In addition to a general external and internal refurbishment, the intention is for the existing Old Armoury room to be repurposed for the installation and development of our state-of-the-art Centre for Teaching and Learning, Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Studies. The space will be used to introduce additional teaching and learning practices which are imaginative, innovative and world-ready for the remainder of the 21st century. In addition, the School is preparing a rolling programme of renovations to modernise each of our boarding houses, ensuring these traditional buildings can meet the demands of modern-day boarding.

28/29

“This centre will help to ensure that Harrovians are equipped to thrive in a world where artificial intelligence and machine learning are going to be dominant in their careers and lives. It will stretch their abilities far beyond traditional teaching methods through evolution and development of their meta-intelligences.” CHA R LES B A I LEY ACA DEMIC A N D UN IVER SITIES DIR ECTOR

Preparing boys for the future is at the heart of our plans and this new centre will be located in the heart of the School, in its very first building.

It will provide: An experimental teaching space to enhance the boys’ learning and to demonstrate findings to colleagues

A space equipped with large screens for collaborative and project-based work

A hub for teacher training and action research, virtual reality learning, coding, digital experimentation for artificial intelligence and machine learning, which will be a valuable resource we can share with local schools

SUPPORTING OUR LOCAL COMMUNITY

Supporting our local community At the heart of our vision for Harrow 450, is the significant support that it would allow us to offer to people who live locally, in north London and beyond. In keeping with the vision of John Lyon, through Shaftesbury Enterprise we aim to address increasing inequality by making our resources and expertise available to young people with significant barriers to progress supporting and nurturing them in meaningful ways that will help them to play a role in transforming the world for the better.

“Harrow School, through the process of cheerful and respectful interactions that is Shaftesbury Enterprise, has sought to forge links in its immediate community and then to build purposefully on them. I am inspired and uplifted by the testimonies from Harrovians and our partners about work done and funds raised with so many and by so many, with the simple common aim of improving our shared experience of what it means to be human.” A L ASTA I R LAND • H EAD M ASTE R

Some of the ways Harrow 450 will benefit members of the local community:

Offer opportunities in sports, science and co-curricular activities through the use of Harrow’s outstanding facilities and expertise. Many young people will use our facilities and visit the school site for enrichment sessions

Provide vital early years support to hundreds of primary and pre-school children at risk of falling behind at the beginning of their educational journey

Offer use of the newly refurbished Shepherd Churchill Dining Hall to our partner schools, especially outside Harrow term times

Provide outstanding subject-specific teaching support in local secondary schools to improve educational outcomes for many students

Work with local community groups to fund grant programmes and provide support for many young people facing significant barriers to progress

Expand our offer for holiday programmes, providing a wider range of opportunities to support children for whom holidays are problematic

OUR FINANCIAL STATUS

Our financial status Throughout its 450-year history, the School has relied on the considerable generosity of its supporters to ensure its continuing excellence. Major new building developments, capital projects, scholarships and bursary awards, partnership work and teaching developments have all been financed by the collective voluntary contributions and legacy gifts of Old Harrovians, parents and members of the Harrow community.

‘Without donations from our generous supporters, none of the ambitions set out by the Head Master and Governors of the School would be possible.’ T H E B U R SAR • NICK S H RYANE
