A YEAR OF NEW CHALL FROM THE

HEAD MASTER At the start of 2020, none of us could have foreseen the impact and challenges wrought on the world by the pandemic and, in the context of the School’s long history, the exceptional period we have lived through. In years to come, historians may never fully appreciate how the School came together and how it was the strength of the Harrow community, even more than its flexibility of thinking, its openness of mind and its spirit of generosity, that brought us through what will, we hope, prove to have been the worst of the pandemic. The School’s values of courage, honour, humility and, above all, fellowship have been lived out on the Hill during these times. At the end of last term, I thanked every member of the School family, the boys, their parents, the beaks and all the staff for what In spite of the challenging times in which we all find ourselves, your enthusiasm for our fundraising endeavours has continued, for which my colleagues and I are most grateful.

they achieved. In addition, I extend great praise and gratitude to the School’s many donors, through the doorway of the Harrow Development Trust. In spite of the challenging times in which we all find ourselves, your enthusiasm for our fundraising endeavours has continued, for which my colleagues and I are most grateful.

FROM THE

CEO OF THE HARROW DEVELOPMENT TRUST Being an optimist is one of the key traits of being the CEO of the Harrow Development Trust, someone for whom the glass is always half full. Thus I tend to look beyond the challenges of the pandemic, and am motivated by the ambitious development programme that the Harrow Governors have asked the HDT to undertake, to celebrate 450 years of Harrow’s heritage, as well as providing an abiding legacy for future generations of Harrovians. Therefore, at the start of 2021, I declare that our ambition is to have funded a number of major projects and priorities during the coming five-year period. These include the construction of our new Science Schools for Biology and Chemistry and a complete refurbishment of the Shepherd Churchill Dining Hall, both commencing in 2021. Then, coinciding with the 450th anniversary in 2022, we will have completed an extensive renovation of Old Schools, and implemented in it a new hub for research and practice into teaching and learning, artificial intelligence and cognitive science. At a later stage, a substantial new Sports Centre will be built, providing a host of training facilities

All of our capital projects will deliver a significant social impact, and be made widely available for use by our partner schools and the local community, supporting young people with significant barriers to progress.

and competitive opportunities that are worthy of Harrow’s greatest sportsmen. Moreover, all of our capital projects will deliver a significant social impact, and be made widely available for use by our partner schools and the local community, supporting young people with significant barriers to progress. Our programme of raising funds for bursaries is as important as ever, and these are our key priorities as we approach the 450th anniversary period and beyond.

FROM THE

CHAIRMAN I have thoroughly enjoyed my first year as Chairman of Trustees, in particular getting to know and working closely with the team at the HDT. My role is to provide a link between the Governors and the priorities that we set ourselves to assist the ongoing funding requirements of the School. At each Governors’ meeting, the extent of the HDT’s financial benefit to the School becomes more evident and there is much to do in the coming years to maintain the levels of investment needed to provide bursaries and support for capital projects. A real disappointment last year was the disruption to almost all of the HDT’s social occasions, at which Old Harrovians, parents and donors have previously been able to gather. I keenly look forward to a resumption of these occasions and a return to near normal as soon as possible.

Why Harrow now needs your support As well as enjoying the anniversary celebrations that will follow, my hope is that many of us will also join together in financially supporting them.

Throughout its 450-year history, the School has relied on the considerable generosity of its supporters to ensure its continuing excellence. Today, perhaps more than ever, your support, through the HDT, is vital to Harrow.

The School and the Governors’ ambitious plans during the years surrounding the 450th year of our foundation encompass four key areas: imaginative building projects to sustain the School through the remainder of this century and beyond; widening access to the School through increasing our bursary provision; preserving the School’s rich heritage while bringing innovation to some of our spaces; and, finally, making a significant social impact through the expansion of the Shaftesbury Enterprise programme. These areas sum up the School and HDT’s key ambitions: as well as enjoying the anniversary celebrations that will follow, my hope is that many of us will also join together to support them financially.

In the immediate term, the HDT is raising funds so that the School is able to provide financial assistance to current parents who have been affected by the pandemic. In the longer term, the HDT is raising a significant portion of the funds needed for Harrow 450, the Governors’ ambitious plans that will keep the School at the forefront of boys’ education for decades to come. Harrow is not a wealthy school – the endowment remains modest compared with other independent boarding schools. School fees cover the School’s operating costs only and therefore, non-fee income, of which the HDT contributes 55%, is critical if the School is to invest in its future:

LOOKING BACK OVER THE PAST YEAR 2020 marked the completion of the The Grove and Druries extensions as well as a substantive internal refurbishment of Moretons. In addition, several minor Three Yards Annual Fund initiatives were undertaken in other Houses, continuing the School’s rolling programme of renovations to modernise every House on the Hill over the next 30 years.

Druries Similarly, Druries, founded in the early 19th century and one of the oldest and most impressive Houses at Harrow, underwent a major renovation.

The Grove A £3m campaign, supported generously by current parents and Old Grovites, has funded a much-needed, deep renovation project of The Grove, a fitting tribute as The Grove celebrated its 200th anniversary in 2020. The construction of the new extension to the north side of the House began in September 2016 and, while delayed (in part due to the discovery of a Victorian cistern earlier in the programme, previously hidden three metres beneath an external staircase), was completed in the autumn. Work is now ongoing to remodel parts of the interior of the existing House. Once finished, the project will deliver new common rooms and light, spacious communal areas, a substantial new boys’ entrance, a new Tutor’s room for one-to-one teaching support, and fit-forpurpose accommodation for the Assistant House Master and Matron.

Improvements include: • the construction of a five-storey extension to the north-west side of the building; • a new common room and light, spacious communal areas for the boys; • 11 bedrooms, two new lavatories, nine showers and three toshes (bathrooms); • a refurbished House Reader (library), Bill Hall and lobby areas; and • improvements to the Assistant House Master’s flat

This much-needed makeover is a tremendous step forward for Druries, confirming the House as a highly desirable 21st-century home for future

Bradbys and Elmfield In addition, the resurfacing of Elmfield and Bradbys’ five-aside Astroturf pitches, funded by Three Yards Annual Fund, provided great satisfaction to Harrovians returning to the Hill in the Autumn 2020 term after many months of remote learning.

urgent need of refurbishment. Enabling work for these projects is currently underway with the construction of a new half-mile long access road, allowing heavy machinery, transport of new materials and excavation of spoil.

BURSARIES AND SCHOLARSHIPS The Harrow Development Trust raised £2.4m for bursaries in 2019-20, along with a further £700k from a generous legacy pledge. This helped fund 99 bursary awards, of which 79 were for over 50% fee relief and 17 were full-fee remission.

Other 2019-20 highlights were: Churchill Places

Peter Beckwith Scheme

Chairman’s Fund

The HDT is currently funding the inaugural two Churchill Place holders: one boy arrived in the Sixth Form in September 2020, and another is spending two years at prep school before arriving at Harrow in September 2022.

The refinancing of the Peter Beckwith Scholarship Scheme is making good progress with £2.3m raised of the targeted £4m, with a further £675k pledged.

During the year, the HDT raised £400k for the Chairman’s Fund, an appeal set up to support families of current boys whose finances are being negatively impacted by the Covid crisis.

The scheme continues to support highly talented boys; the 2019–20 Head of School was a Beckwith Scholar (see opposite), as is the Head of School this year.

Looking forward With John Lyon’s original intentions in mind, the Governors have approved some changes to the School’s bursaries policy. The aim is to broaden significantly access to Harrow for boys from a variety of backgrounds. The main features of the revised policy are: The introduction of new entrance bursaries

LEARNING, INNOVATION AND HERITAGE Visiting posts in Art and Music Donors have contributed funding to appoint professionals in both Art and Music to become Visiting Fellows at the School. In Art, the London-based artist Elizabeth Drury is due to begin a 12-week placement. She works primarily in drawing and has exhibited across the UK and India. She is the co-founder of Hot Desque, a ‘nomadic curatorial practice’ based in London that presents exhibitions, talks and essays. In Music, the department hopes to appoint a young OH, Thomas Moy (The Grove 20113 ), to share teaching, performance and musical engagement widely with schools in the local community.

HERITAGE Preserving our Heritage and being innovative with our spaces An imaginative and exciting project will commence in 2021, combining the very best of Harrow’s heritage and history with ground-breaking research and teaching practices in an exciting fusion of the ancient and the modern. Old Schools, the original School building, opened in 1615, now requires attention. As part of an extensive renovation and refurbishment of this historic building, a substantial space funded by the HDT will be devoted (in what is known as the Old Armoury) to the installation and development of a new centre for Teaching and Learning, Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Studies.

Computer Science Society project Already, boys from the Computer Science Society are excited about the new centre and have been inspired to design their own piece of high-performance technology. They are building a desktop PC from the ground-up using carefully assembled, bespoke hardware. The system, capable of cutting-edge performance, AI emulation, machinelearning and big data science, will be the most powerful machine ever developed at Harrow, and has been designed to be easily upgradeable in future. The new system will allow for a massive boost in computational speeds over the current departmental hardware – up to 25 times faster than the current set of high-performance PCs. Above all, the system will grant unparalleled educational opportunities to all boys interested in AI and big data science.

OUTREACH AND PARTNERSHIP The HDT and Shaftesbury Enterprise raised a total of £276,300 in 2019/20 for local causes, including £65,000 specifically for Covid-related relief efforts. THE NEW EDWARD BOWEN SOCIETY In 2020, the Harrow Development Trust renamed the legacy society, honouring one of the School’s greatest benefactors, and a notable and much-lauded figure in the School’s history. A former beak, House Master of The Grove and Director of Music at Harrow, Edward Ernest Bowen’s legacy can be found across Harrow’s richest traditions. Bowen’s name will be familiar to all Harrovians, as author of the lyrics to many of Harrow’s most popular Songs, most notably Forty Years On. An ‘excellent scholar’ Bowen is also described as ‘an indefatigable foot-ball player’ and was responsible for codifying the rules of Harrow football in 1865, creating the game that we know today. Described in a memoir after his death as having a ‘character of the rarest beauty and purity. His (apparently many) friends turned to him upon any question of morals or duty or honour with an assurance that was absolute.’ It is to this generosity of spirit that Harrow owes in no small part its standing today. On his death in 1901, Bowen bequeathed The Grove, which he had bought during his tenure as House Master (1881–1901), and other property to the School as part of one of the most valuable legacies in Harrow’s history.

LEAVING A GIFT IN YOUR WILL

Bequests have been enormously important to Harrow since its earliest years, with John Lyon’s original endowment and reversionary legacy being the foundation stone upon which the School is built. As we celebrate 450 years of heritage and tradition at Harrow, leaving a gift in your will is your opportunity to make a lasting contribution to the School for generations to come. Choosing to leave a gift will help safeguard Harrow’s future. As a charity recognised by HMRC, all legacies at the current time to the School are free from Capital Gains Tax and Inheritance Tax. By choosing to make a gift in this way you may reduce the total tax liability of your estate to your family. If your estate is worth over £325,000 and, if you leave a minimum of 10% of your estate to charity, the tax due may be paid at a reduced rated of 36% instead of 40% on the balance of your estate.

Join the Edward Bowen Society If you pledge to leave a gift in your will, you will automatically become a member of our Edward Bowen Society. You will also receive invitations to donor events, including a special benefactors’ lunch, your family will be invited to a memorial tree-planting ceremony and your name recorded in the Harrow Tree Book. f you wish to discuss leaving a gift to Harrow School in your Will, please get in touch with us.
