Constructing Framework

The first exercise introduced to the two placemaking theories of Jan Ghel’s Cities for people and Cristian noberg schulz’s Phenomena of architecture and to critically understand the core idea of humanising and placemaking aspect. Furthermore, the theories helped to build a framework that would help in constructive and precise site condition documentation. The Framework was worked out by both the theories and through critically understanding the Placemaking aspect and also the Humanising aspect which the mordern cities or typology are lacking.

Site Introduction

Navrangpura gam holds a history of more than 300 years. It was an agricultural land belonging to the patel community living in Juna gam. Later the corporation provided series of plot which lead to the development of narangpura gamthal. The gamthal was a vacant land initially but over the span of recent 20-25 years it experienced both commercial and residential development fading away the boundaries of gamthal and becoming naranpura block. The red patch on the right image is the Ground. The ground belongs to the municipality school. The ground is ocassionally used throughout the year for sports events, other than that the ground is used for parking.

SITE MAP The Existing site plan has less vegetation on the ground. The urban fabric differs throughout the block. The block has 18 societies and a gamtal area. The societies on the periphery of the block are new developments with 2.7 FSI. On the below left corner the Juna gam is located which is basically the Gam extension with same Byelaws. The Gamtal has a continous boundary at the edge and allows only pedestrain access from that side.

BUILT VS OPEN MAP Narangpura gaam has a varying density that leads to a different kinds of open spaces. Mostly, these open spaces are in form of streets and several every- day functions and interactions happen along these streets on the otlas. The slight below huge open space , the school playground is the only central open community space for the entire neighbourhood. The other open areas are on different societies. The Gamtal has more built ratio compared to the othet typologies since it is clustered and the streets are narrow.

Building Use Plan

BUILDING USE MAP The site majorly belongs to the the residential use. The neighbourhood also consists of a school and a temple that acts as a major attractor to the site. There are two schools in the block one on the left is private school and other adjacent to the ground is Municapality school. There are majorly commercial on the ground floor of the periphery buildings. The Gamtal also has 3 Temples inside the Gam boundary and commercial adjacent to the main roads. The commercial shop are jwellery, groceries, laundary and other retails.

COMMUNITY MAP The gamthal is composed of 95% patel community, 3% of thakors, economiclly weaker section and the remaining are mixed. The new development is most mixed precints but as such shahs and swami narayan dominates in them. The Gam has a strong sense of community due to majority of same type of community whereas thakor vas which has a major share in the Gam population is highly disconnected from the Patel community. Other societies do not have such strong sense of community though they are disconnected from each other.

Time Problem Exercise

The Wall exercise was a time problem task to design an interactive edge which aslo responds to the central space. The core idea of this exercise was just to explore the softe edge and make it interactive through the urban forms. The exercise also introduced to the new softwares like rhino and go into detail 3 dimensional drawing. The Drawing on the right side is the Interactive edge with C shaped Urban form providing hierarchy of spaces, connecting the edge to the central space was main aim. It was mandatory to also explore the verticle development to suffice the growth.

Hierarchy of open spaces and type of activities:

Varying scale of open spaces leading to di rent tyes of activities happening on site.

Vehicular movement connecting the pol with the major street and commercial activities. Wide open spaces of pol or major chowks. Thesere a public in nature and activities like children playing or presence of chabutra. The edge consists of entances, otlas, balconies and windows overlooking the open space, hence higher interaction. Size = 100 - 200 sq. m These small open spacesrea semi public in nature beacuse of scale and type of like washing areas or house storage.

32

The street remains shaded for most times of the day creating a thermally comfortable environment that also makes people enjoy sitting out on their housefront as recreational time.

25m is the distance within which facial expressions can be readand creating semi public spaces that retains this characteristics enhances quality of interactional and to an extent generate probable interactions.

4.5m Soft Edges: Character of open spaces is them. Shops - found near street edges, at the beginning of the pol. small shops, tailors, etc. Chabutras - They dot almost all the chowks in the pol. They characterise these spaces. Temples - Temples and shrines are anchors of the community, often representing who the pol belongs to. Otlas - present outside almost all homes, these are extensions of the plinth, anchors of social life

Liveliness and Safety:

No. of entrances opening into reet st in 50m of span= 30 (eyes onreet). st The more entrances the more opening, hence more eyes on the street inducing a sense of safety. More opening will also generate more possibilities of interactions, therefore making the spaces lively. Multiple facades will constantly stimulate human mind with each crossing.

Physical Elements of the edge: Hard edges makes the facade blunt and dead leading to no interaction between the inhabitants and for visitors. Soft edges makes the environment happening hence leaves lot of opportunities for interaction. Elements of soft edge- otla, balcony, niches, windows.

Central space Idea

The central space idea began with the idea that different activities happen in different ways, for example one type of activity is where there is movement between people and there is accidental interactions. Other type is static and interacting where people deciede a paticular spot and then gather and interact. The activities were identified from the site analysis and were put in these categories. The spaces were then designed in order to create informalness and flexible use throughout the day. The central space idea plays with different materials and patterns to create informalness and attract various user groups. The central space idea also takes into account of the school adjacent to it and caters to the school activity.

Urban Edge Concept

The Urban edge’s concept is to create different space for public, semi public and private activities and to develop it in a modular structure. The Edge focuses on creating punctures and interactive balconies providing interaction and privacy at the same time. The Edge has a frame structure which makes it structually stable and also helping the people to carry out the day to day activities like drying clothes, decorating etc. This will add character to the edge and make it more interactive .

Humanising Urban Spaces

The view particularly shows the interface of edge to the central sapce, it attempts to visualize how the urban edges becomes inetractive and start creating spaces multiple levels. It attempts to take the central activities onto the vertical levels (skip floors) which becomes celebration space. The view shows the pedestrian bridges how it connects the urban edge and the entire neighbourhood vertically.

The View is taken from the skip floor which visualize the space becoming a place where multiple activities could happen. This idea of skip floor provides opportunity to have interaction at multiple levels. It also creates to provide green parks running through the urban edge at various levels making the edge more porous and interactive. The core idea is also to make this space a flexible space which could cater to the temporal or cultural activities like Garba, mairrage functions etc.
