A sincere love for

kitchen Choosing a new kitchen for your home is not something you do often. It is crucial to think it through and choose a kitchen that you are satisfied with over a longer period of time. HTH Kjøkkenforum Harstad has all the knowledge you need about styles, colors and materials – but where to begin?

B

eathe Berntsen is an interior designer by profession, and is one of the knowledgeable consultants at HTH Kjøkkenforum Harstad with a passion for the field. - There is nothing better than help fulfilling someone’s dream of the perfect kitchen. Our customers will be in good hands. Firstly, it is important to be inspired. So if you stop by us we will take you on a tour to show you all the possibilities within kitchen fronts and wine cabinets, says Beathe. Mapping your style Do you prefer classic or minimalistic? Modern classic is often portrayed in the New York style, recognizable through the use of rustic materials.

A different direction would be a nostalgic kitchen with classical qualities. Or what about a minimalistic approach that would suit most norwegian homes? - When a style is chosen, it is easy to adjust with colors, materials and appliances to make sure that the new kitchen is adjusted to you and your home, says Beathe. Make the right measurements Make sure to make room in your schedule for a meeting with a kitchen designer. It is wise to make good measurements beforehand, and at the same time note where the pipes and ventilation run today. It is no problem to leave this up to the expert. Our consultant can come to your home to make the right measurements.

Stop by and become inspired, says Beathe Berntsen, consultant at HTH Kjøkkenforum Harstad.

- Together we can work on the layout, how the kitchen work triangle should be, and the placement of pipes and ventilation. Equally important are the details such as knobs for your cabinets. It can «make-or-break» a kitchen, says Beathe. From thought to result HTH kitchens come in finished modules from the factory. You can also order it flat-packed to save money by setting it up yourself. They also have experienced kitchen fitters that stand at the ready to help you. The quality and guarantee of 25 years is the same in all the aforementioned variations. - We adjust the kitchen to your budget and needs, so stop by for a talk, says Beathe.

Decorating for a good workflow The kitchen work triangle exists of three invisible lines that connect the most vital work zones – sink, stove and refrigerator – which form a triangle. The idea is that these three zones are relatively close to each other to establish an effective workflow that will save time. You move more within this area than any other zone in the kitchen. To create the most effec tive layout, it is a general guideline to say that these three lines should add up to a sum between three and five and a half meters long.

When the courtyard is completed, it will consist of a main house, stave church, barn, forge and out-house. The construction work takes place in collaboration

rondenes Medieval Farm will be a unique arena from where to teach people about the local medieval history, says Ingrid Moe at Sør-Troms Museum. At the farm peo-

ple will meet the housewife and the master with their family, the boy servant, the maid and several other people with connection to the farm. They will also be able to meet the livestock

with NTNU`s department for traditional crafts and technical building protection. The main house is a pole-built residential building with a tradition back to ancient Norwegian building practice. The house will be dresses with peat on the roofs and walls. Inside, the house has “mold” benches along the walls and an open fireplace on the floor.

The stave church is built as a copy of Haltdalen stavkirke. The church will be named «King Øysteins Church» since King Øystein ordered such a church building during his visit to Trondenes in 1114. Through detailed investigations of the work and craftsmanship techniques used in the original church, the building of King Øysteins church will be performed with

similar tools and techniques used in the Middle Ages. Most of the materials and parts for the main house and stave church are produced at the regional museum in Sjøvegan before raising the buildings at Trondenes. To tell the tales of the Medieval farm several stories will be re-enacted. The topics will range from the history of our country and

local history to different social conditions such as the relationship between king and church, everyday life, culture, etc. Most of the dissemination will take place through role play and interactive participation. The goal is for us to be perceived as a living Medieval farm both for locals and other visitors alike, regardless of their background and age. For school children, the

farm will be a living classroom. For local companies and visiting groups, the courtyard will be a unique framework for any event. -We are really looking forward to opening the farm to the public. Now that all the roles are filled, the clothing is sewn, and the animals are in place, we are only waiting for our guests to arrive, Moe finishes.

EXPERIENCE 1000 YEARS OF PLOUGH, CROSS AND SWARD! Learn about the history of the Harstad region through an extensive exhibition, stretching from the Stone Age to the 1950s. The focus of the exhibition is the Viking Age, the Middle Ages and the 2nd World War. Outside, at Trondenes Medieval Farm, the life of a Northern Norwegian family during the early 13th century is communicated.

A LIVING MEDIEVAL FARM OPENS JUNE 23RD, 2019 This summer, the gates of Trondenes Medieval Farm, situated just next door to Trondenes Historical centre, are opened. The farm illustrates a relatively standard size farm in the 13th century - not very big, but also not to small. The husband’s main workplace was at sea, while his wife had the daily responsibility for farm operations. Through role-play and drama Norwegian and local medieval history is conveyed. Here you can, among other things, meet the mistress Jorunn, the boy servant Haldor, the maid Frøydis and the oldest son of the house Sverre.

DAILY EVENTS ALL SUMMER During the summer Frøydis and Sverre will be working at the farm every day, and as our guests, both children and adults can assist in the daily chores. The young people can try traditional handicrafts using leather and wood, and the adults can go for a tour of the exhibition and a taste of the Middle Ages served in the lounge.

FARMING ALL YEAR During the year, the nature of chores around the farm changes. The autumn is characterized by harvesting and processing of wool and linen. In the winter they brew beer and sews clothes for the farmer to use out at sea, while spring is a time for sowing and repairing fences. All this you can experience up close, and even participate in the work.

Opening hours: June 23rd - August 18th, all days 10:00 - 16:00 Tickets: adult NOK 125, - / child NOK 60, Full year ticket: adult NOK 375, - / child NOK 180, -

SUITABLE FOR SMALL AND BIG: Mountain hikes are suitable for people of all ages, such as these little friends who have taken the trip to Trollvassåsen.

Hiking for everyone Harstad is a pioneer when it comes to mountain walks. Perfectly located between the rocks and mountains, the next peak is never far away.

P

eople go hiking in almost any weather. Mountain tours have really become something for everyone, says Kjell Søreide. Harstad Bedriftsidrettslag where he works has since 2002 organized a public health activity called Ti på Topp in the Harstad region. During summer and autumn, people are encouraged to go hiking in the local area and register their hikes online or in the

12

E X P L O R E H A R S TA D

app, and when the season is over, prizes are distributed. The activity grows year by year, and Kjell Søreide can safely say that the hiking interest in Harstad is great. Norwegian public health and volunteerism - It is a part of the Norwegian soul. We love to go hiking. Many of us spend most of our working day in front of a screen, so after working hours we really

Commercial magazine for shopping and adventures in the Harstad region

feel the need to get out into nature, he says. In his team he has many eager volunteers, and the most active are Asbjørn Kaarbø, Tina Eilertsen, Sigurd Ditlefsen, Arne W. Jensen, Astrid Erntsen and Ketil Stavdal. They help decide on new trails, put up marks and maintain the trails during the season. - This is a great way to stay in shape. When I started with

Fjellgeita’s top tour tips in the Harstad area

Mountain hikes is a vailable for everyone, not just for those who are already fit

There are many nice marked trails in the Harstad region. Here are some of Kjell Søreide’s best tips:

Tina Eilertsen Bedriftsidretten

Keipen at Aunfjellet (496 meters above sea level) The path is good, and the route to the top is well marked. Parking is located on the left side of the road, west of Aunvatnan. The trip is only a 3-kilometre round trip and is suitable for most people.

YOGA AT THE EDGE: A hike is not just a hike, it can also be combined with other things - such as yoga! Here some people do the yoga position «dances». Photo: Elisabeth Berntsen

Photo: Lisbeth Hægdal

Ti på Topp I had been to the same mountain peaks for many years, but now I have discovered many new peaks, Tina says. Good workout Mountain hikes is available for everyone, not just for those who are already fit. In fact, there are few activities that provide as good a training effect as a hike. - Many people who start exercising think that they must start jogging, but it can be a bit straining for muscles and tendons. It is much better for your muscles to go for a walk up the hill. If you walk at a steady pace, talk a little and get your heart rate up, the effect is great. You will need a good speed on flat

GANSÅSTOPPEN: At the top there is plenty of room for both a break and to enjoy the view. Photo: Bedriftsidretten in Harstad

ground to get the same training effect. The bonus is the experience of getting outside, getting a view, feel the weather and fresh air, says Kjell and adds: - Besides, few people regret afterwards, regardless of the weather, that they chose to go on a hiking trip. Suitable for everyone The motivation to get out for a hike varies from person

to person. For some it is an everyday activity and training, for others only recreational. Also, an increasing number of tourists and other visitors have opened their eyes for mountain tours in and around Harstad. When the tour destinations are so easily accessible, there is nothing in the way that a Hurtigruten tourist or a conference guest with a couple of free hours can find the time for a hike.

Commercial magazine for shopping and adventures in the Harstad region

Gangsåstoppen (179 meters above sea level) The peak itself is a popular goal, but the trail to the top is very nice as well. Or should we rather say the trails - there are several different routes to follow to the top. Start at the parking lot in Toppenveien, up the stairs and follow the marked path. Just below the top there is a climbing route, and at the top there are both a traditional shelter and binoculars available. Maybe you can also find the cave of Amor, which is hidden here? Swelling (726 meters above sea level) This top is a short drive from Harstad city centre, about 45 minutes. Drive past Tovik, Renså and almost to the top of Krokmyrdalen - in the direction of Grovfjord and Astafjord. You can park in the lower half of the last steep stretch, on the left side before the highest point of the road. From here, you find the marked trail. On the way, you pass some marshes that can be wet, so remember suitable footwear. From the top the view towards the Harstad area gives a kind of bird’s-eye view. This hike is more demanding than Keipen and Gangsåstoppen, but not worse than most people manage it just fine.

We promise great summer atmosphere!

The festival promotes maritime culture in addition to arts and culture from all over Sápmi. It is important to preserve and revitalize the Sami culture with its traditional values. nother successful Fagmøbler Landsås Cup is finished. Both the sporting event and the concert this year were an unconditional success, as it has been for the past seven years.

HK Landsås would like to give a special thank you to the organizer staff which is working night and day both before and during the tournament. It is amazing to see how dedicated you are in your efforts to support the club.

Big thanks to everyone Landsås håndballklubb would like to thank everyone who has helped the club during this year’s tournament. Without the parents this would have been impossible to achieve. We know that the volunteer effort is huge, but in return we get excited kids and good feedback from other clubs.

HK Landsås will also give a special thank you to our sponsors, which gives us the opportunity to focus on being Northern Norway’s coolest handball event. With your help we have come from an almost dead-end cup, to a sports event where teams are now on the waiting list to be able to participate.

- If you want the perfect day out, good food is a must Tour enthusiast Tommy Simonsen and his outdoor students at Harstad Folkehøgskole are not in doubt: Good food is important on tour - and that does not mean a bag you pour hot water into.

T

hroughout the year, Tommy Simonsen spends much of his time outdoors, and his tours always include a nice meal.

the students in the outdoor life class is to learn to make food outdoors which is tasty as well as provide enough energy for hours of hiking.

- We want to enjoy our time outdoor, and then food is a very important ingredient, says Tommy.

- We have made a few mistakes in that department. Once we were to make tomato sauce and used two whole cans of tomato puree as well as whole tomatoes and a powdered base for to-

Learning by doing One of the learning goals of

mato sauce. It didn`t exactly taste very good, says Anna Sødahl. - But that is how it works. It is impossible to make an omelette without cracking some eggs, Tommy laughs. Prepare at home All tour meals must be planned before leaving civilization. After shopping, it is a good idea to prepare

some of the ingredients before leaving the house. For example, fry the minced meat, cut the vegetables and cook any bases for sauces that you bring. - The social part of preparing and sharing a meal on tour is also important. It is much more special when you cook together for a while before you can sit

Lightweight food Sometimes the most important thing is that the food weighs little, especially if one is to wear a rucksack for several days in a row. Here is a list of foods that weigh little and can provide OK nutrition: - Bag of soup and casserole base - Dried meat / stockfish - Energy drinks, coffee, toddy, cocoa and tea - Mashed potatoes, whole grain pasta and rice as an accessory to other foods - Oatmeal (preferably together with milk powder, sugar and cinnamon) - Rice porridge and milk powder (plus own mix with sugar and cinnamon) - Crispbread - Dried fruits such as apricot, raisins, banana or mango - Bake mix for bread on a stick, pancakes, sveler, waffles (you only add water and butter or oil) WOK IN THE FREE: With ready-cut vegetables and optional meat or other protein source, wok is super easy to make, too. Recipes Calzone on bonfire Calzone is a baked pizza in Norwegian, shaped like a crescent. If you prepare the ingredients at home, the dish is easy to prepare outside. Before you go: 1. Make dough from wheat or mixed flour at home and put it in a bag with some oil in it (then it will not stick to the bag). 2. Prepare the filling before leaving. You choose whether you make everything from scratch or if you buy ready-made pizza sauce. Cut the other ingredients, take what you like! Pepperoni, bits of sausage, mushrooms, onions, fried minced meat, strips of beef, peppers, tomatoes, cheese -you choose. On tour: 3. Roll the dough into a bun and squeeze it to a flat circle. Adjust the amount of dough and the size according to the size of each individual wish. Rather make two smalls than one large, as the little ones are easier to get fried through. Put the dough on a piece of aluminum foil which is brushed with some oil. 4. Put filling on half of the dough, start with the sauce and finish with cheese.

OMELET ON bonfire: Omelette is easy to make as a tour breakfast, especially if you prepare the batter at home. Photo: Tommy Simonsen

down to eat, than if you just boil water and put it in a bag of freeze-dried porridge, says Viktoria Harmøy.

«Beans, chickpeas and eggs are good protein sources, and can also be eaten by vegetarians,» says Anna.

Important nutrients As important as it may be that the food tastes well and that it stays fresh during your tour, it also needs to contain the correct ingredients so that you have enough energy during long days with activity. Proteins and carbohydrates are especially important.

Eggs are a popular ingredient when the students from the folk high school is on the move. There are separate “egg-containers” for touring, which protects the shell and prevents crushing. Alternatively, you can cook the eggs in advance or break them into a bottle or a tight box.

Replacing the primus? Do you always rely on your primus and camping stove when you are cooking under the open air? What about trying to make the food directly on the bonfire? If you are going to make a lot of food, it is faster, and in addition, it is nice to sit around a bonfire warming up while eating.

26

5. Fold the dough in half so that the portion without filling covers the portion with filling. Squeeze the joints tightly so that the filling does not run out. Fold the aluminum foil to cover the entire calzone. 6. Fry the calzone on the edge of the bonfire. Eat as it is, straight from the foil.

««Fried rice» on bonfire Fried rice can be termed as Asia’s answer to puddlein-pan - a perfect way to use leftovers. In addition, it is super hiking food, as it is both healthy and nutritious. It is cheap too. 1. Cook rice, preferably boil-in-bag if you want to avoid too much dishwashing. Ordinary rice can of course also be used. 2. While the rice is boiling, fry the onions and garlic in a separate pan. Then add, for example, shredded ham, mushrooms, carrot or other things you like, and fry. 3. When the rice is cooked, mix in the ham and vegetable mix. Then make a pit in the rice and break in eggs. For one bag of boil-in-bag it is suitable to use three eggs. You can easily break the eggs at home and carry with you in a bottle or sealed box. 4. Flavour with a little soy sauce and pepper. Served in generous portions and eaten easily with spoon or fork.

Baked pizza, or calzone, is tasteful and different tour food - and not difficult to make. Photo: Tommy Simonsen

Cinnamon-swirl on a stick

Basic dough for calzone, stick bread etc.

Something sweet is a delicious ending to a meal, or simply just nice food out on the trip. Bread on a stick is also fun for children, which can easily be included in the making of it.

3 dl of lukewarm water ½ hp fresh yeast, possibly 1 pk dry yeast 2 tablespoons oil ½ teaspoon salt 7 dl wheat flour

Before you go: 1. Finish the dough at home. The dough does not have to be sweet, since sugar is added gradually, so you can use the same dough as the calzone. Also prepare a bag with a mixture of sugar and cinnamon, where the mixing ratio is about 2/3 sugar, 1/3 cinnamon. On tour: 2. Take a piece of dough and roll it to a sausage, the thickness of a finger. Swirl this like a spiral around a wooden stick. If you make some air between the dough rolls down the stick, it is easier to get it cooked all the way through. 3. Dip the stick with the dough into the sugar and cinnamon mixture, and make sure you get the goodies on the whole dough. 4. Fry the cinnamon bun on the embers and share good stories.

Stir the yeast with the water and add oil, flour and salt. Knead the dough well and let it rise - in the bag is perfect, unless it is too cold outside.

Easy bread on a stick dough: 2 cups of wheat flour 1 teaspoon baking powder (or dry yeast) a little salt water Mix two cups of wheat flour and one teaspoon of baking powder in a bowl and add a little salt. This is kneaded with water to a suitable dough

Tornerose

- where dreams come true Since 1985 the store Tornerose has helped people fulfil their handicraft dreams. The store owner, Lars-Ivar Lilleng, believes this has to do with peoples need to create.

T

he unique concept at Tornerose is popular in the region. During June, July and august the focus is on wedding presents, guest duvets, bed-linen, curtains and sun-screening for houses and cabins, and handicraft and yarn for the knitting addicts. Sewing wave If you have a sewing project, we have what you need. Now we have, among other things, jersey for clothes and some quilting fabrics. Just stop by and let yourself be inspired by the quality of the fabrics. We are noticing a growing trend that people like to mend their own clothes, as well as sew new ones. People are very creative, and we love to help them fulfil their dreams, says Lars-Ivar.

Knitting for everyone At Tornerose the shelves are filled with yarn in all colours and qualities imaginable. During the summer months we sell more of the lighter yarns such as mohair, cotton and linen. We are supplier for several yarn producers, and we are happy to help you find the right colour combinations for your knitting project, says LarsIvar as he shows us knitting needles in carbon. Tornerose also arranges knitting-cafe together with the coffee-shop Rustikk. Here you can meet fellow knitters and learn from each other. Whether your project is small or big Tornerose is always prepared to help.

Curtains - more than a shelter against the sun Textiles in your home gives the interior a lift and binds it all together. At Tornerose you can buy curtains, blankets, pillows, tablecloths in the same series as other interior items to give your home a collective style. I addition to the 300 readyto-hang curtains they offer, you can also choose from 800 sample curtains. If you want, the staff at Tornerose can help you measure, fit and sew curtains to your home. It doesn’t get easier than that. We find that many people choose lighter curtains for the spring and summer, and more heavy curtains for fall and winter, often as a colourful addition to other sun blinds. We are the largest supplier of Luxaflex products in our region and have their “shop-in-shop” on display

in our store. This gives our customers the opportunity to see and try the Luxaflex products before they buy. We can tailor all products to your need, says Lars-Ivar. Lars-Ivar grew up with a mother who in some periods knitted as much as 52 sweaters a year. She also followed her dream to start her own store (Tornerose). The dream was to have a business where the customers could crate beautiful knit wear and beautiful homes. Lars-Ivar can also see the same passion his mother had in his customers. - We would love to hear about your next project, says Lars-Ivar. Electric trends at G-sport at Amfi Kanebogen:

Electrical bicycles gets more people active The threshold for getting more people active has become even lower now.

S

tore manager Jostein Kajander and his employees notice an increase in popularity for electrical bicycles at G-Sport at Kanebogen Amfi. - Electrical bicycles has really become the new trend. For many people it will become easier to cycle longer distances, and it is easier to get up those hills that normally are exhausting to climb with a normal bicycle, says Jostein. Only the most enthusiastic of cyclists bothered to cycle throughout the whole year, but we can see a surge of people that cycle to work throughout the year.

battery capacity has some such a long way that it isn’t a problem to cycle in freezing conditions anymore. You just need to change to winter tires when the snow comes, and you are good to go, says the store manager. Families sharing a bicycle Between 70 and 75 percent of eletrical bicycles sold at G-Sport are bicycles for women.

rience before using an eletrical bicycle, hence few electrical bicycles are sold to children. Electrical scooters on the other hand are easier to handle, and are popular among children and adults.

- Cycling on an electrical bicycle is just as easy as on a regular one. You yourself can decide in what gear to ride, and how much assistance you want from the motor, says Jostein.

Powerful batteries It has been several years since the electrical bicycles came onto the market in Harstad, and there have continuously been upgrades on the models.

Popular and best in test To fully enjoy the benefits of a motor, it is important to spindle the bicycle pedals. There is a speed limit of 25 km/h build in all verified electrical bicycles sold in Norway. This means that the engine automatically will cease to assist when you reach the set speed. It will still be possible pedalling in an ordinary fashion.

- The batteries and motors are steady getting more powerful and better. Batteries last longer before they need to recharge, and motors are running more smooth – both over flat and uphill terrain, explains Jostein. The smallest batteries last 45 kilometers, whilst the largest last 150 kilometers before they need to be recharged. Each battery can be recharged at least a 1000 times before they need to be replaced.

- You can use an electrical bicycle the entire year. The

When you tour with B&B Touring, the goal is to become rich on knowledge and experiences.

ur philosophy is that you learn something new when you are on a trip with us. You can find beautiful nature in many places, but our unique history can only be found here, says Johan Bjørnes.

Stiklestad – how it actually went down, says Johan.

He runs B&B Touring together with Oddvar Bremseth. They specialize in guided RIB tours where they narrate about the region whilst you are on a sightseeing tour.

- Many people believe that they aren’t interested in biology, but when they join us on one of our trips and get to learn how it all hangs together, people get a newfound love for it. It is such a giving experience when people are curious and really care, says Johan. Johan and Oddvar, who guide on their own tours, can tell about events ranging all the way back from the Ice Age to climate changes in the north.

No cock and bull stories The region of Harstad has a rich viking history. Johan and Oddvar make it their case to tell the customers true stories rich with facts. - We don’t tell no cock and bull stories at B&B Touring, only factual ones. Someone else can tell the fictional tales of Tore Hund, whilst we narrate his actual part in Norway’s conversion to Christianity, Saint Olav and the prelude to the battle at

Biology in nature’s classroom The science of nature plays a crucial part in the company’s guided tours next to the viking history.

A neverendring thirst for knowledge Whilst tourists are open to new learning experiences and tend to be very curious, are locals often astounded

over the knowledge about their environment that they previously weren’t aware of. - Almost everyone is interested in viking history, but biology can be a hit or miss with most people. We adjust our guided tours for our customers, to make the experience worthwhile for everyone, says Johan and adds: - We have guided tours for school classes as well. It is very rewarding to teach them about the archipelago, instead of whatever is happening on their phones and tablets. With more than 11 years of experience is the duo in B&B Touring ready to take on new challenges. They are planning on more land-based experiences in the future where storytelling will be a vital part. - The more I do this, the more history I learn myself. It never gets boring!

B&B Touring can offer the complete experience package in Harstad’s archipelago when they team up with providers of culinary brilliance. B&B Touring has build a simple house, Midgard, in Sundsvollsundet on Bjarkøy where they take customers who want to combine food with storytelling. After a boat trip packed with storytelling, the guests will arrive at a house with exquisite food. Here B&B Touring collaborate Bark or Kokkens Mat among others for a complete experience. Here you will be served delicious food ranging from a bowl of fish soup to a three-course dinner. Such an experience would take 5-6 hours and is perfect for the groups that are looking for a unique experience. - People come here to ease the tension in their shoulders and philosophize at the seaside. year’s 10th anniversary was unanimous: This area works brilliantly and gives the festival public a better venue than was the case with the old Bakgården.

- We have lowered the prices of day pass compared to last year. Hopefully this will also help convince people to get out of the couch and into our festival area. This year we will have even more seating, and the supply of both food and drink will also be better.

- Not least, it allows us to put out more benches and tables, so people can sit. We are a city festival and it is hard to stand on asphalt for so many hours. So, this year we will make sure that there is more seating in the festival area. Hopefully there will be a lot of people, so we can show the artists that we have the world’s best audience here in Harstad.

to satisfy the pallet inside the festival area. An important year Although the festival has been arranged ten times before, this year’s event is in many ways very important and represents a new beginning. - Bakgården Harstad AS is a brand-new non-profit company that will stand on its own feet. And like all start-ups, we are, of course, dependent on people wanting to buy what we offer. If there are not enough audiences at the festival, it is not certain that Bakgården as we know it will last for years to come. Fortunately, ticket sales have been very good, so we are reasonably certain that this year’s festival will also be a popular party.

–- We have decided on artists that we know will give us great concerts. That’s what it’s all about for us: To give our festival audience magical concert experiences with artists they like, or artists that they didn’t know they liked before they got to experience them at Bakgården. Below you can read a little about this year’s artists, sorted by day:

Thursday:

Friday:

Veronica Maggio: The critically acclaimed Swedish pop star has won five Grammis, two P3 Gold, three Rockbjörnen and three Gaffa awards in Sweden. She has been voted the Nordic Region’s most popular female artist, and is the first female artist to have sold out a concert at Stockholm Stadium!

The September When: This year is thirty years since the band released their first album and ten years since they were last on the road. Led by Morten Abel, it becomes a formidable walk down memory lane when the band performs their most famous hits.

Ruben: He is from our neighbouring island Bjarkøy and stood on a major festival scene for the first time during Bakgården two years ago. Since then, he has become a pop star with two Norwegian Spellemannspris nominations. buy tickets at

www.bakgaarden.no

Matoma: The music producer and DJ Matoma has more than one billion streams worldwide. To Bakgården he brings his full band to play monster hits like «False alarm», «Running Out» and Coldplay remix «Adventure of a lifetime».

Queen - Åge Sten Nilsen feat Bel Chorus: Queen’s songs are immortal, which was further enhanced and revitalized with the stunning Bohemian Rhapsody movie, which won four Oscar awards. Åge Sten Nilsen has a fantastic voice and together with the local male choir Bel Choruss he performs the best songs from the Queen catalogue.

ISÁK: With Stjernekamp winner Ella Marie Hætta Isaksen as the lead figure, the trio ISÁK has taken Norway`s music scene by storm. ISÁK is simply one of the most promising electropop groups from Norway in a long time.

Staut: Folk rock band STAUT has taken music and festival Norway by storm. Bakgården promises to show why they are referred to as one of the best live bands in Norway.A review in the Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet says that the song «Øpin grind» gives us a musical taste of Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band in folk rock mode.

Saturday Åge og Sambandet: This year it is 35 years since the rocker from the Trondheim region released the iconic album «Levva Livet». It is celebrated with a tour called «3570». 2019 is also the year Åge Aleksandersen turns 70, and of course this national rocker comes to Bakgården during his jubilee!

Sol Heilo: Music’s response to Pippi Longstocking, former Katzenjammer-member Sol Heilo, came right into the Norwegian living rooms this winter thanks to the popular program «Hver gang vi møtes”. There she charmed and excited everyone with her energetic musicality.

Violet Road: With great musicality and an infectious mood, there is hardly a band in the country that exudes a bigger musical excitement than Violet Road. Where these guys show up, the party is on, which has made the band a highly popular live band.

Blått & Rått: For almost 30 years, Blått & Rått have rocked the region with their music. Twenty years ago, the band released the album Oppned, and of course it should be marked. When songs like Oppned, Nytt Liv, Profet i egen by, Svart & Hvitt og D e ikkje nøye, the crowd is encouraged to sing along.

Exhibitors Although the market at BakgĂĽrden has experienced a large growth in the number of exhibitors, the market manager Lena Magnell has room for more. - We have room for more than 80 exhibitors, and we encourage companies, teams, associations, individuals and others to participate. The market has consolidated its position as the most attractive market in our region. BakgĂĽrden and the market are therefore a unique place to profile your business.

Visit our website and sign up for your company, says Magnell. Although there is construction work in the square in Harstad during this year’s festival, both Harstad municipality and contractor Harstad Maskin AS have promised that access during the festival will be very good. - Since it is also election kick-off this weekend, it will also be possible to meet all political parties in Harstad. They have their stations on the south side of the square.

Aktiv Events keeps expanding their horizons:

Strive to deliver the best of experiences It all started with a bachelor party for his best friend Rolf. Now Per Helge «Pekka» Johnsen strives to create and deliver memorable experiences for others.

I

t probably sounds like a cliche, but I am here so others can experience things that they thought they wouldn’t be able to do or afford on their own, says Per Helge Johnsen – or known by others as Pekka. Pekka was earlier involved in activities as skydiving, bungee jumping and other extreme sports when he one day decided to make this his career. It all started when he arranged a bachelor party for his best friend. The idea was simple; he was creating activities for everybody attending, so they all had

an activity they could do together. This quickly lead to his first enquiry – a company booking activities for a group of 40 people. It all just escalated from there on out, and Pekka now leads one of the leading activity companies in the region. Pekka runs Aktiv Events in Harstad, where he takes people on different activities and creates memorable experiences in the region. Aktiv Events also delivers activities in regions such as Sortland, Lofoten, Narvik, Tromsø, Bjerkvik, Bardu and Alta.

Complete experiences with Aktiv Events Aktiv Events delivers experiences across the entire chain – from individuals, groups and bachelor parties, to large companies, tourists and celeb guests. Pekka and his staff can create activity packages that would fit anyone’s needs, and could last somewhere in between half an hour to several days. The demand for activities in the winter, between November and April, is greatest with Asian tourists. They want to see the Northern Lights, majestic mountains, go fishing and cave hiking. - We deliver complete experiences and can arrange everything from picking up the customers at the airport on

Evenes to a packed schedule with transport, experiences, food and accomodation, says Pekka. Pekka would gladly bring customers along on his tracked carrier or snowscooter and take them up to their cabin on top of Sollifjellet during the winter, or to the large lavvu in Aurora camp on Aunfjellet. Here you can enjoy good food and stories as they wait for the Northern Lights to show herself dancing across the night sky. scooters. The company’s mobile playland, Funparks, is very popular in Northern Norway. Enjoy activities such as bouncing castles, slides, bumperz soccer, bungee trampolines and much, much more. Aktiv Events also has rental of large displays, often paired with live film production which are seen during concerts, festivals and sport events. - Many activities can’t be experienced without us, because most individuals don’t tend to spend the money needed to buy all the equipment needed. But with us at the scene, anyone is able to experience fun at land and sea without it costing a fortune, says Pekka. Own office in Bysenteret Aktiv Events has recently gotten new offices in Bysenteret. The central location makes it possible for anyone to stop by

and spontaneously sign up for some of the events they have to offer. It is possible to book all activities at the office, both in- and outdoors experiences. You can find Funparks by Aktiv Events in the same offices – just a short walk from the bus stop.

- We have a 7 meter high climbing wall, Harstad’s first «escape room» with the ambition of setting up 1-2 more, and laser tag with equipment from Darklight System v7. We have 6 years of experience with laser tag. We have rental of bicycles, snowshoe equipment, climbing gear, cross country skis, skimountaineering equipment, boats, kayak and lavvus. We are opening new tree camps in August, where people are able to sleep in tents in trees and enjoy a great view of the sea, says Pekka.

Steadily expanding Even though Pekka and his customers can look back on 15-20 years of unique experiences, they have their eyes set on the future. Aktiv Events will continue to expand, and the first course of action is to increase his staff with full time employees in addition to the 15-16 people that work as guides, instructors and technicians. - This is my life. I strive to make people happy, and I will continue on doing so, smiles Pekka.

Hekla Stålstrenga has become a national sensation. The band has sung and played their way into the heats of people with songs like «Har du fyr», «Vise ved vintersolverv» and «Vinter». You can hear their greatest hits accompanied by our orchestra on the christmas tour. It will be classical music dressed as folk music – and of course christmas songs.

Mutual respect - We are both friends and fans of Hekla Stålstrenga, and when you combine the fantastic people and music of Hekla Sålstrenga with an energic orchestra from Northern Norway, it will bring the musical experience to a whole new level, says program director Catharina Roos Bilsbak in Arctic Philharmonic (previously NOSO). Hits and christmas music The audience will be taken on a nostalgic trip through time paired with a good dose of christmas music. The architecture of Jan Inge Hovig Jan Inge Hovig (1920-1977) • Norwegian architect renowned for public building raised after the second world war • City architect in Narvik from 1947 til 1950 • Started his own architect office in Oslo in 1950 • Many of his buildings can be found in Harstad, Narvik and Tromsø

Harstad is one of the most exciting cities of Northern Norway when it comes to architecture. Amongst the cosy squares and the charming wooden houses, you will also find architectural pearls (post war) drawn by the renowned Norwegian architect Jan Inge Hovig.

A

fter world war 2, many Norwegian cities needed to recover their identity. The city of Narvik, which experienced massive destruction during the war, hired the Norwegian architect Jan Inge Hovig as their city architect. He would later play a big role in city planning, apartment construction and signature buildings in the region. Samfunnskvartalet/ Community quarter Harstad swimming hall and Harstad community hall & cinema were all part of the

community quarter, which with its strong form set the tone for the new architecture of Northern Norway. The community quarter would contain a community hall, public pool, public offices and offices for rent, which were all symbols of unity and development. Nuclear physics and red leather seats Harstad cinema is an architectural pearl which was finished in 1954. Reaching into the street with a bright neon sign telling everybody what is to be found behind the doors

of oak and glass. A massive marble column that stretches across two floors highlights the principles of the modernistic architecture. The floor covered in copper and marble detailing is inspired by nuclear physics, while the walls are covered with pink marble from Fauske, 360 km south of Harstad. The cinema could seat 630 people in its original red leather seats. Today the cinema is upgraded to accommodate modern standards, and we highly recommend a visit. Glass, air and water Harstad swimming hall was opened with pomp and circumstance in 1958 when mayor Leif Bothner dove into the pool with his suit still on. Since then many people have gotten to enjoy the swimming hall in the centre of Harstad. The building has a distinct

and functional form with huge glass windows to let the daylight in, and a facade covered with big sheets of concrete which are visible from the inside. Today you will have to visit Grottebadet across the street if you want to go for a swim because the swimming hall is now occupied by a gallery, Galleri Nord-Norge. The room is adjusted to meet the galleries need for light and up the stairs you will find a mezzanine floor. But even though the room is dry the tiles along the floor does still tell the story of the original pool. During the year exhibitions of both national and regional interest can be seen in the gallery. Punkthuset - the tallest building in Harstad This eleven-story tall building was finished in 1957 as a part of Skolegaten housing cooperative. It was not common with such a tall building at the time, and there was no shortage of objections from the surrounding houses. But, the post-war lack of housing was obvious, and with a Mayer who had much focus on housing, the first high-rise in Harstad was built. This building is a slim quadratic apartment complex, with a staircase and an elevator in the centre of the building.

You should go for a walk between the pastel buildings which is especially beautiful in the evening sun. Sculptural landmark When a new and modern church were to be raised in Harstad, the renowned architect Hovig got this assignment. In addition to the church building itself, he also designed the interior benches and liturgical furniture. The shape of the church is simple, yet powerful, with clean lines, and natural materials like slate and natural stone where used to enhance the structure. Placed in the middle of a park and on top of a hill above the city centre the church is an important landmark, and with the church tower it even gets a sculptural quality. Harstad church is the first working church built in Norway, which means it has several functions. In addition to its 500 seats it also has a kitchen and a lounge area. The church was consecrated by bishop Alf Wiig in 1958. When you stop by Harstad church on your tour of the city, you will find the statue of Hans Egede, also called the apostle of Greenland, outside the church entrance. The triangular alter piece shows an assembly of Jesus sermon on the mount and Hans Egede preaching

to the people of Greenland. In addition, the church has two glass paintings of the Northern Norwegian artist Jardar Lunde. The beauty of a functional expression The architecture of Jan Inge Hovig falls under the later part of the functionalistic era. The word comes from the Latin term functio, which means to function, execute or complete, this type of architecture broke through in the 1920’s. With this, one removed all unnecessary decor to make something new and fresh, and the use and construction of a building was to be expressed in the way it was built. A functional expression was beautiful. The five point of functionalism: 1. Skeleton of steel-reinforced concrete 2. Flat roof with terrace 3. Open internal plan 4. Horizontal ribbon windows 5. The free facade should be composed Other renowned buildings in Harstad by Hovig is the Rasch-Tellefsen building in Sjøgata 1, Harstad Gymnas (high-school) and Håndverkernes hus (on the corner of Hvedings gt and Normanns gt)

Obs in Sjøkanten shopping center:

The art of shopping smart If you suddenly would run out of paint in the middle of your renovation project, or you are lacking a grill for your summer party: you need not fear with Obs near!

Y

ou don’t really need a plan when shopping at us beforehand. We have long opening hours and everything you’d need under the same roof, says warehouse manager Stig Jensen. The shop is open from 8 in the morning until 11 in the evening (10 on Saturdays) and its’ employees and staff are at the ready to help their customers with all their needs. Refurbishment late at night - People are often busy and have their days all planned

out. Job during the daytime before you go home to your family, and continue with errands at home. If you’d then renovate late at night and run out of paint in the middle of your project you do not need to stress out. We have everything available on our shelves so you can come and pick up whatever you need, or one of our staff will gladly assist you in choosing the correct item, says Stig. Normann Aronsen is one of the staff members that the manager refers to, and is at the ready to help the customers.

Normann has worked in the store as long as Stig has, namely 19 years. He knows everything you need to know about your refurbishment project as he is the sales manager for building and housing. - We stand at the ready with advice on products, and methods on how to best apply these to help our customers. The market steadily gets introduced to new products, and we have good knowledge about how these are put to good use, says Normann. Price guarantee on paint Recently there has been good progress in the field of paint. - Earlier there were only oil-based paint products for use of both in- and outdoors. Nowadays we can find environment-friendly paint,

which lasts just as long as oil-based paint, says Normann. Obs is the largest retail shop with the longest opening hours in Harstad. That gives a very clear competitive advantage. The same goes for the store’s price guarantee on paint. The store makes it a point to be the cheapest within paint products. If you find the same kind of paint at a lower price with one of their competitors, Obs guarantees that you can buy the paint at the same price. Great selection of grills It is not just paint and renovational tools that are bought in Obs – the barbeque season is just as essential for the store. With nearly 20 different grills on display, it is safe to say that E X P L O R E H A R S TA D

65

Cont. from previous page the store has something for everybody. - It was just a few years ago that only those with a lot of money could afford gas grills, but now there are gass grills in so many variants and price ranges that these aren’t exclusive anymore. But I have to admit that I myself swear to charcoal grills - due to the tastiness it provides, says Stig with a smile. Grilling with gas is easier if you’re going to grill different kinds of meat, fish and vegetables that all need different heat treating. - With more burners and different heat zones, it is easier to control the temperature in the grill. This provides different grilling experiences than with a charcoal grill which are harder to adjust, says Stig. Among the different brands, Obs has the bestseller from Flying Culinary Circus in store.

He and store employee Marcus Våg Asvald tend to see many sold bicycles roll out of the store. - It is DBS and Merida that deliver splendid products year after year. The people know that those are of high quality, says Kai Roar. You can have a bicycle for many years as long as you maintain it properly. - My best tips would be to degrease and lube the chains often. When cycling in environments rich with dust and sand, you need to clean the chains regularly to prevent damage on your gears, says Kai Roar. Both chain lubricant and degreaser can be found on the shelves in Obs – along with anything you would need in your daily life. - Shopping smart is an art – and you can do this at our store, says warehouse manager Stig.

BICYCLEMANIA: Marcus Våg Asvald (from left to right) and Kai Roar Kind sell many bicycles - especially from the DBS and Merida brands. These brands are known for their quality products.

- Those are grills of great quality – just as good as Weber, whom are known to be great with grills, says Normann, who informs us that those also can be bought at Obs. Fun for children Obs has something for everyone. Whilst mom and dad find it rewarding to search for solutions regarding their renovation projects, is there more fun to be found for children in the department of sports & leisure. There is an impressive selection of bicycles to be found between spring and summer at Obs. - We tend to start the season with bicycles for children and teenagers, because they tend to be the ones in need of them first. The adults tend to buy new bicycles when we approach summer, says Kai Roar Kind, sales manager for sports & leisure.

”The Road is Just a Surface” til Festspillene i Nord-Norge

Her møter kunstpop av ypperste klasse Jo Strømgrens surrealistske verden, sier Utsi. «The Road Is Just a Surface» ble også utgitt i albumformat i 2018, og har fått strålende anmeldelser.

Harstad for free The best in life is free, they say. Here you find some of the activities you can do in Harstad without spending money. Selsbanes seil The 50-meter-tall fountain is easy to spot in the harbour. It is created by the artist Geir Samuelsen, and it is intended to honour the Viking Chieftain Asbjørn Selsbane who lived in Trondenes. When the wind blows the fountain shows its true form as a sail. Street-art Harstad is the home to many artists - so many that the art even stretches out into the streets. Several places in the city centre you can find artwork made by many different street artists - and maybe you will even find something completely new? On the walls of the town hall, in Hans Egedes Gate and in Fjordgata you can find some of the largest and most popular street art of the city. Generalhagen You find Generalhagen in Storgata, the main street, and it covers two blocks. Originally this was the private garden for the general, therefore the

name «The Generals Garden». The general’s mansion burnt down in 1942, and after the second world war the garden was made a public park. In the park you will find the statue of the general himself, major general Carl Gustav Fleischer. There is also a music pavilion in the park, which was built as a statement building and symbol of the growth in the cultural life of the city. The pavilion was the main concert scene for the brigadier band which was established in Harstad already in 1911.

everybody, and the gallery is open from Thursday till Sunday. The gallery building is a piece of art, drawn by the architect Jan Inge Hovig. Before the gallery was opened, this building was a swimming hall and community hall. You can still see the original tiles from the swimming pool both on the inside and the outside. The gallery hosts approximately 12 different exhibits every year, and it presents both sobering and challenging arts from national and international artists.

Harstad public library Harstad library is the main music-library for the county of Troms, and it has the largest public collection of music in Northern Norway. Concerts and lectures are held on a regular basis. In addition, you can borrow books, e-books, movies and music, all free of charge.

Kasfjord city 12 km north of Harstad city centre you find the most charming little place - Kasfjord city! This miniature city consists of about 100 residential houses, shops, church, concert hall, OL-facilities and much more. Mostly the buildings are made from recycled materials, and it is refurbished and expanded every year. You find benches and tables around the city so that the visitors can sit

down and really take in the atmosphere in the city and the beautiful surroundings. The city is open for visitors from early summer till the first snow. Harstad Church Just west form the city centre you will find Harstad church. The church was built as a working church, which means that is has multiple functions in addition to the normal church activities. This helps the church come to life also during the week days. Inside you find the triangular alter piece that shows an assembly of Jesus sermon on the mount and Hans Egede preaching to the people of Greenland. The church also has to spectacular glass paintings made by Jardar Lunde, one in the back of the church and one to the north of the choir. The Troll forest In the forest above Brokvik, about 20 km south of Harstad city centre, you can find the

forest of the trolls. It is a relatively easy hike which takes you up to a spruce forest. As you walk in between the trees you will meet trolls in all shapes and sizes. Keep your eyes open, you never know where they hide… Public beaches Even though the swim temperatures may not be the warmest, there are several public beaches and places you can swim in Harstad. In Folkeparken there is a fresh water lake with a small pier,

prepared fire places, benches and tables. A swim in the lake may even feel good after a nice hike along the paths in the park. Another fresh water lake is Hagavannet, close to Trondenes. In Kanebogen, close to Harstad camping, you find a pebble beach, and if you go to Gressholmen (not to far from the forest of the trolls) you find a beautiful white sand beach. Altevågen in Trondenes is also a nice place for a day out by the sea. All these areas are prepared with fire pits, benches and tables.

Hilsegate - Harstad greet street If you find the Norwegian people a little bit strict and private, you can visit our greet street in the city centre. Here everybody is expected to say hello to people they meet, and we encourage you to stop for a chat with the locals. On your map the street is called Rikard Kaarbøs gate. Ferry-ride In the county of Troms all pedestrians and cyclists can travel with the ferry free

of charge. This means that many areas around Harstad is available without cost. For example, a bike-ride to the neighbouring islands of Grytøy, Bjarkøy and Sandsøy. You take a ferry from Stornes to Bjørnrå, and from there the next islands are connected by bridge and tunnel. Or you go the other way, with ferry from Stangnes to Sørrollnes to visit Andørja.

REFURBISHING: Pål Sørvoll and Daniel Cristea is completing a massive refurbishing project. Here you see the laser tag field in the works.

SAM lekeland renewes:

More focus on young adults and company visitors With laser tag, trampoline park and escape room in the house, SAM lekeland (activity park) will focus more on young adults and company visitors.

T

his is going to be amazing! says Pål Sørvoll, manager at SAM lekeland. The reason is that he has great plans for this indoor activity park. During the summer and fall massive changes will take place behind their doors. Earlier the park was mainly targeted towards children,

74

but now they will expand in order to offer several activities for the older kids as well as the adults. We need to give the youth activities they enjoy to get them inside the doors, says Pål. Lazertag for youth and adults The 250 square meter laser-tag area is new this

year. Dressed in special wests players hunt each other with laser-guns inside an exciting maze. There is much running, adrenalin, action and excitement. It will be just like re-enacting one of the many video-games the youth know, but in a controlled environment where security is the main focus, says the head of the activity park. In addition to being popular among teenagers, laser-tag is well suited for team building events, bachelor/bachelorette-parties, family events

or activity night for a group of friends. The laser-tag arena has a smoke machine, UV-lights and sound system and is also a good place for a disco-birthday or other private events. In addition, you can also rent rooms as a meeting or party venue. Indoor trampoline park During fall and toward Christmas, parts of the activity park will be equipped with 5-6 trampolines. We have gotten many requests for high quality stunt trampolines, so thath is exactly what we have ordered, says Pål.

SAM Lekeland More than 1200 square meters in three levels filled with adventure for all age groups

FUN FOR ALL: Both children, adults and teenagers can have fun with laser tag

Open every day, all week. Monday - Thursday 15:30 - 19:30, Friday Sunday 11:00 - 19:30 All rides and equipment approved by the Norwegian Veritas Offers pool table, trampoline, mini-pitch, climbing-wall, f oam-pitch, VR-games, venue for birthday parties and other arrangements as well as a wide range of games. Lazer tag, trampoline park, escape-room and relax lounge coming.

MODERN EQUIPMENT: The laser tag equipment at SAM lekeland is brand new and modern POPULAR TRAMPOLINES: Daniel Cristea, Lise Marie Bakke Nesheim and Pål Sørvoll are looking forward to opening one of the first trampoline parks in Northern Norway.

Earlier people have had to travel to the south to visit a trampoline park, but now it will all be found in Harstad. Brain exercise in an escape room At the same time as the trampolines are getting sent over, SAM lekeland will also build an escape room. The concept can be found in many countries, and the point is to solve a mystery within a time limit. To do this you need to work through several tasks which puts your brain to the test. In other words, a perfect team building activity.

We already have this concept available by using VR-glasses, and that is very popular. This is the reason we now choose to make a room where you can physically solve the tasks together as a team, in other words a perfect team building exercise, says Pål, before he adds: Here you can really fill the hour with fun! Also, room to slow down By the end of the year a relaxation lounge will be ready at the top end of the play area. Here the kids will have

Lazer tag

The participants are divided into two teams and given wests fitted with laser sensors. Each team has their laser-gun and will eliminate their opponents by hitting their wests. The game is often played out in a maze and you have a time limit of 10 - 15 minutes. The infrared beams used in the game are completely safe. International laser tag tournaments are held regularly all over the world

20 - 30 square meters to wind down. In this area the lights will be dimmed, and the music will be relaxing. - At SAM lekeland there we want to offer experiences for everyone, and everybody is welcome, says Pål.

Escape Room 3-6 participants work together through the whole game. The team is locked into a room for one hour and will need to cooperate to find clues and solve riddles before the time runs out. The participants must be good at observing things and be able to separate useful from useless information. Each escape room has its unique theme, appearance and background story.

The red main building, called Normangården, was built in 1723, and was originally the main house for the trading post Raten. In 1798 the farmhouse became a guesthouse by permission from King Christian VII of Denmark and Norway. In 1914 the old guesthouse was turned in to a family home, and around 2013 the house was restored back to its former glory, and once again ready to welcome guests. Elgsnes has been inhabited much earlier than 1700, and traces of settlements dating as far back as 10 000 years have been discovered in the area. In addition, finds have been made that could be

traced back to the younger Stone Age, Viking Age and Merovingian Age. Fishing tourists from all over Europe Today Normangården, and its owner Tore Ruud, welcomes more than 1000 guests during the summer. They stay in the old farmhouse, which now is upgraded to meet all modern needs, such as TV and WiFi.

Winter tourists are welcome Even though Tore has hit the big 70, he has no plans to cut down on the work. His newest focus is to expand the season

at the house, and welcome guests during winter as well. -We have the perfect conditions to watch northern lights out here. Almost no light pollution, and the few lights we have, I control and can turn off if necessary, Tore laughs. Tore Ruud can also offer something for local companies or tour groups in his renovated boat-house on the beach. Here he works together with other local suppliers to offer a gourmet experience by the beach. And, if the weather gets a bit cold he will light the stove to give a nice natural warmth.

-My best feedback is guest who come back year after year, says Tore Ruud. That means that they have enjoyed their stay. The conditions for fishing in the area is also great. Andfjorden, the fjord just outside Elgsnes, is known for its halibut, and it is good possibilities to catch cod, pollock, cusk, haddock and redfish. Some of our guest are out to catch the biggest fish, while others Commercial magazine for shopping and adventures in the Harstad region

The idyllic archipelago:

Grøtavær – adventures to cherish Do you dream of spending your vacation on a private island? Or to roam around the archipelago by bike? With Grøtavær Brygge as your base, the dream can come true.

I

n the archipelago outside Grøtavær you will find myriads of uninhabited islands and skerries ready to welcome guests who are looking for experiences out of the ordinary. - We are more than happy to help our guests get out to the islands to experience a few quiet hours on a deserted beach outside Grøtavær. You can bring your own lunch, or we can prepare a picnic basket for you, Noralf Leitring tells us. As the manager of Grøtavær Brygge he is passionate about creating the best experiences for all guests who visit the area. Caribbean vibes A trip to Grøtavær, which is situated at Grytøy and only a short ferry ride and drive

northwest of Harstad, offers both the classic Northern Norwegian scenery as well as an exotic vibe resembling the Caribbean. Here you find the steep mountains inviting you to go for a hike, a versatile archipelago with white sandy beaches and crystal-clear water, and a rich animal and bird life. -These are magical adventures that you will only find along the coast of Northern Norway, according to Noralf. He himself is born at Grytøy, and he is a true patriot who loves all the nuances of his area. -But, he reminds us, even though the beaches are white and the ocean clear, you will be reminded that you are north of the Arctic Circle as soon as you put

your toe in the water. Luckily this doesn`t stop us from having days where the air temperature reaches 25 – 30 degrees Celsius. Noralf is a creative guy, and he is continuously developing new products. His latest project is glamping – which is a luxurious form of camping. During summer 2019 you can try this at Grøtavær. Here you can spend the night in a high-quality bed, in a lavvo in the middle of nature. You fall asleep under the midnight sun and wake up to an undisturbed view of blue ocean and white beaches. It can even feel like beeing stranded on your very own island. On two wheels in the archipelago In addition to the beautiful and hidden beach pearls, Grytøy and the neighbouring islands Bjarkøy and Sandsøy, are the perfect place to spend your day on two wheels. Grøtavær Brygge offers bikes to rent

Commercial magazine for shopping and adventures in the Harstad region

for individuals and groups, and by bike it is easy to find marked nature trails for new adventures. Grøtavær is also a good starting place for mountain hikes, with or without a local guide. And if this was not enough, you can rent a steady boat to go fishing in the rich fishing grounds outside Grytøya. Bryggeloftet At Grøtavær Noralf can also offer traditional experiences in the old wharf, but this is only for pre-booked groups of 10 – 150 people. Maybe a birthday celebration, or a wedding, in this charming venue could be something to consider. You arrive by land or sea and are greeted with song and an introduction to the traditions of Grøtavær. The food served is of course based on local ingredients and traditions. Noralf welcomes all his guests with humour and warmth, and a desire to make your stay an adventure to cherish.

Travel tips: Folkeparken is a good starting point. From here you can hike to several different traditional shelters, (gapahuk) both by water, inside the forest and at a peak

ENERGY STOP: Food and drink is important on tour, says siblings Karen, Hanna and Magnus Ă˜wre.

Hiking with children: - Parents must be patient Hiking with children is no challenge if the parents take it easy and do not stress.

G

unn Elin Fedreheim is the head of the Barnas Turlag, a branch of the Norwegian Hiking Association, in Harstad and has hiked a lot together with children of all ages. She believes that it is up to the adults to make the hike a success. - Kids can do almost anything. I have often been amazed by how far the little ones manage

88

to walk. The clue is that the parents stay patient, she says. As an adult, one is often used to having a specific goal for the hike: You set out to ascend a certain peak, travel a specific distance or reach the goal in a set amount of time. When you hike with children you need to change that mindset.

- Kids do not have the same goals for a hike as adults do. They enjoy climbing trees, picking flowers and jumping from rocks. We just need to be patient and let them play, and the hike will be a joy for the children as well as the parents, says Gunn Elin. Gunn Elin and her partner Tommy Ă˜wre often bring their three children, Hanna (4), Karen (6) and Magnus

(9), on short and longer trips. More than once, the youngest girl has insisted on taking the tour in a princess gown and to bring her toys along. - I think that is okay – that is not the battle we need to win. She can go for a hike in the dress, and we bring a change of clothes for when she finds the dress a bit annoying, she laughs.

ALL DRESSED UP: Sometimes a dress is the only thing a four-year-old is willing to wear, and that is ok if gives everyone a nice trip.

Popular tours: Maistua and “vikingdomen” is a popular destination in Harstad - also for the children. The cottage is open for everyone, but you need to have a key to enter. You get the key in the summer months with Kiwi Medkila. Gangsåstoppen is also a suitable destination for children and their parents. Great view on the top, and a shelter where you can make a fire. READY, SET, GO: Almost dressed and ready for the trip. Karen puts on a dress, Hanna the rainhat and dad Tommy and mom Gunn Elin approve the choice of footwear before they are ready to leave.

New slope opening December 2019 at

Sollia Alpine Centre In scenic surroundings only 8 km outside the city centre of Harstad, you find one of the best family friendly alpine ski-centres in Norway, Sollia Alpinsenter. Currently big expansions are in motion, and the goal is to give visitors even better facilities.

D

aily manager Knut Granås tells us about big investments in the months to come to make Sollifjellet even more family friendly.

in good time before the season starts, Knut can tell.

son, to much joy for both locals and tourists, Knut says. Knut also says that they are facilitating artificial snow in the long run to be able to accommodate professional sports. The goal is to have a super-G trail approved by FIS, but to have this they will need a harder surface which is difficult to accomplish with only natural snow.

The new slope will be to the right of the existing slope, and it will be fully lit and accompanied by a separate lift. The lift will be a plate-lift, which is a bit easier to use for beginners than the existing t-lift. We expect to be ready in December 2019,

Powder snow with a view The alpine centre today has a variety of slopes, all with a spectacular view from the top where you can see Vågsfjorden and Andfjorden while you whiz down on powder snow. We are situated in an area very rich in snow, so this is one of the most «snow-stable» place in our region. This is one of the alpine centres which opens first and closes last in the sea-

Family-trip to Sollia In Sollia the smallest children can have fun in the

toboggan slope or try the 62-meter-long auto walk. There are also simple jumps and rails for those who would like to try, and with 5 slopes, 320 meters of elevation and 7,2 km trails there should be something for everyone. In the cafe you can enjoy the Easter sun in the outdoor area, or catch a breath in one of the 130 seats inside. The cafe offers coffee, tea, some warm dishes and regular kiosk items.

Ski course and ski rental At Sollia Alpinsenter you can rent alpine skis, snowboards, off-piste-equipment and helmets, which can also be used off premise. We also offer ski-course for any one person and smaller groups. Just contact us on our website, and we will accommodate you as best we can, says Knut Best freeride terrain in Norway In Sollia you also find an amazing terrain for freeride

skiing. It is easily accessible by taking the main lift to the top of the mountain. We have also prepared an area at the end of the mountain so that you can run all the way to your car and drive back up to the lift. Sollia Alpinsenter was named the best freeride terrain in Norway by the magazine Fri Flyt, and with a new slope the conditions will be even better next season.

Commercial content from Sparebank 68º Nord

Our local bank on 68 degrees north

A regional powerhouse January 1st, 2019 the savings banks of Harstad and Lofoten merged and became Sparebanken 68°Nord.

T

his merger was desired by two successful banks, says Werner Martinsen. Martinsen has been the manager of Lofoten Sparebank and will continue as manager in Lofoten for Sparebanken 68° Nord. -It is during the good times we need to build for the future, and that is what we now have done, he adds. -The forces working towards centralization are strong in our country, and we see the need to make strong alliances in our region in order to secure local wealth also in the future. We stay offensive and facilitate so that the local communities along the whole latitude also in the future can benefit from a strong local bank with local commitment.

94

E X P L O R E H A R S TA D

Regional centre of gravity A stronger interaction along the latitude of 68 degrees north is desired by local companies, municipalities and people in general. Sparebanken 68°Nord is seeking to mobilize collaboration across established regional borders and structures. By seeking cooperation with other positive forces our goal is to make the latitude 68° north a seamless regional centre of gravity. Local ownership is important to make this work, as well as good infrastructure. The big road-projects and the modern digitalized work market will make it easier to maintain a good workflow through the whole region. Sparebank 68°Nord strives to be a driving force in the development towards the region of Ofoten/ SørTroms/Lofoten/Vesterålen

to become a stronger and even more developed centre in Northern Norway. -Our goal is to be one of the most important pillars on 68° north, and we want to be in front in order to further strengthen, gather and develop this region, says general manager of Sparebanken 68°Nord Tore Karlsen Karlsen also adds that the bank should set a strong example in the work towards uniting all good forces in their geographical scope. Unique ownership Sparebank 68°Nord will stay 100% locally owned. Martinsen says that it is important for them to stay local, because that is the only way to secure that the recourses stay in the region. We will not send dividend out of the region in any case he ensures us.

Commercial magazine for shopping and adventures in the Harstad region

-This has to do with our vision to create more value locally. By maintaining this ownership structure, we strengthen our ability to be a strong supporter for our customers, and contributor to local associations all along the golden coast of Norway, Karlsen says. Still the local patriot The name is new, the logo is new, and the totality of the bank is strengthened. But, most customers will not see any change throughout their day-to-day business with the bank. -Our employees are the same, we keep all our offices, and we will still be an active contributor to the society. All in all, we will still be the same popular local supporter we have always been, an enthusiastic Tore Karlsen tells us.
