Technology help center

Applicable to Geebamu: Program: The makerspace, technology driven program could be considered for Geebamu’s program offerings. Empowering the community with relevant skills will help make parents more employable, and support children’s learning and development (and improve their chances for scholarship in a country where public school charges a premium to attend). Design: strong emphasis of planes, natural lighting through expansive skylights and curtain walls provide cost effective interior lighting while contributing to a sense of grandeur and wonder within the space, wood slat dropped ceiling with recessed light fixtures running the length of the room guide the eye and create a strong sense of directions. Presentation stage/choir bleachers double as seating when not in use—highlighting the importance of planning for flexible and adaptive spaces. Bright colours such as turquoise as the feature and golden yellow as the accent help enliven the space, making it less severe and more welcoming to a younger generation.

Quiet group study rooms

Applicable to Geebamu: Program: A focus on offering a balance of quiet study and louder, more sociable areas for learning, tutoring and gathering reminds designers to consider acoustics, segregating spaces according to function and human use patterns. Knowing their target demographic (university students) they took into account their primary learning needs and designed a space to best support them. Geebamu’s main users needs should be constantly kept in mind, and the varying user’s needs should be accounted for (children want/need louder and more playful spaces, whereas school age children might need semi-private areas for tutoring sessions and mothers preparing to take a skills upgrade test for a course migh need complete silence). Design: expansive lobby with a multitude of gathering space promotes sociability and serves as the central heart of the building. The tiered seating stairs allow for the vertical circulation path to be turned into useable socializing and reading space (efficient!). The bar height counter running along the main floor overlooking the lower level is flanked with seating to offer patrons a prime view of the building, creating interest and encourages the users to explore spatial volume and engage with the building in another way. Geebamu could have places to plug in laptops or charge ipads running along the bar top— making use of the floor voids that will be used to help express my design language. Materials are kept simple: concrete, wood, steel and glass. This modern mixture does not overwhelm but conveys a sense of strength and authenticity. These materials would be suitable for Geebamu (could be locally sourced and help create an atmosphere that reflects my chair’s meaning).

Meeting rooms “An incubator for technology, the space is designed flexibly to change and adapt as requirements from the community shift. The design concept is inspired by modern technology: similar to a computer, the facility serves as a "shell" for educational "programs" that can be modified as technology evolves. . . . People of all levels of experience are invited to come and learn in a public environment. A coffee shop adjacent to the open collaboration area serves as an informal touchdown zone for

patrons of the library. The Makerspace connects theoretical learning to product development ... will be leading innovative educational programs and classes. Do Space has partnered with the Omaha Public Library to make a number of digital resources and databases available, as well as a collection of STEM ebooks available for checkout, expanding members' educational opportunities. (HDR Inc., 2016) Applicable Points for Geebamu: Design: bold colours, colour coding for wayfinding, dropped ceilings with lowered panels, open floor plan for flexibility, partition walls, use of glass (transparency and visibility) Program: technologically driven – offering training and opportunity to use equipment that otherwise would be too expensive. Fostering STEM education amongst children for better job prospects. It is a library based on digital collections and books are accessed through databases. This frees up space for alternate programming and allows people to engage with literature in a different way. This departure from the traditional library setup could work well for Geebamu, freeing up floor space and allowing for more comfortable gathering spaces and flex space to accommodate community responsive activities.

Centre Culturel de Notre Dame de Grace, Montreal, Canada – December 2015 Type: New Build, Community Library Architects: Atelier Big City, FSA Architecture Inc., L’OEUF s.e.n.c Cost: 14.5 million Size: 4500 meters squared Applicable to Geebamu: overall building shape is similar to Geebamu (minus the west wing) so spatial planning and use of open spaces should be considered. Example of Stair Seating and multi-function programming (social activities on first floor, and traditional library activities on second), different zones of building are distinct and well defined, structural components exposed and left as part of design language, scale of furniture in relationship to room height (ie. Low modular pieces enhance a sense of verticality within a high, exposed ceiling corridor) (kennieff, 2016)
