RATIONALE ASSIGNMENT 4, 5

I chose a VICE online article and strove to recreate it in the form of a VICE print edition mockup. My three graphics included a cover page, a page of drawn sketches and a hoodie mock-up image. Collectively my graphics were designed to add visual interest, draw in the reader, and reflect the information presented in the article (ie. the hoodie’s popularity with various subcultures, its negative delinquent connotations, and its elevation into high fashion as the epitome of street cool). The cover page was a compilation of three photos (male model wearing a hood, surprised female face, and a hand smothering a mouth) that were collaged together and then made into line art. The image was meant to be harsh, and slightly disturbing, with the female’s imploring eyes locking with the viewer, daring them to read the article. The eyes were mismatched in colour to unbalance and make the image “pop”, with those colours being repeated throughout the spread. My hand drawn images were purposely kept rough and sketchy to support the “street vibe” of the hoodie, as well as mimic fashion designer’s pre-collection artwork. To represent the hoodies strong urban-street culture roots, I chose to accent the spread with spraypaint motifs and cool toned colours (blue, green, grey) often used in graffiti and concrete (the canvas of the street). This motif was also used throughout the spread to provide continuity, and act as a visual guide to draw the eye around and through the text. Their placement was thoughtfully placed to give weight and help visually balance the spreads. Grey circles in the background were used to juxtapose the straight-lines of the layout and soften it. After doing some research, I found out that the magazine was recently redesigned (March, 2016). VICE’S overarching design principles of simplicity and function as well as their tendency to embrace “loud graphics” and “white-space”, helped guide my design decisions. The layout, sizing and graphic choices were determined by the information I gathered as well as the recent edition articles I looked at for reference. My typography choices were determined by those included in VICE’s new typekit; if I couldn’t find the exact font, I downloaded a recommended alternative. I ended up using Sabon for the main body text, Trade Gothic for subtitles and callouts, Monsterrat for the captions, and a mixture of Clarendon and VKS Choice for the title. The title word “Hoodie” was in its own unique font to be dramatic and emphasize the main subject of the article; the distressed effect applied to the text was done set the tone for the overall grime/street aesthetic of the spread.
