This thesis suggests that there is a possibility to create systems and use materials in a cohesive way using traditional textile production techniques leading to a building that is more responsive and specific to its programs. Traditional building systems and material use is compositional and based in systems of layers disconnected from their adjacent programs. Often the techniques of textile production are used only as a metaphor.
TEXTILES IN/AND/AS ARCHITECTURE The program of this thesis is a textile campus; a space that allows for the research, production and selling of textiles and textile based technologies. This program exists in the intersection between architecture, interior design, design and technology and fashion. The site for this thesis is the previous fashion building located in the fashion district. The recent sale and impending demolition of this building afford the possibility for real experimentation. Using this existing structure, this thesis aims to create new spaces for interaction and discovery for students across disciplines.
