Textiles In/As/In Architecture Making_Materiality_Education Fashion District, Manhattan

SCE Fashion D&T Thesis_Astrid Lipka • M.Arch_Year 3_Spring 2015

This thesis suggests that there is a possibility to create systems and use materials in a cohesive way using traditional textile production techniques leading to a building that is more responsive and specific to its programs. Traditional building systems and material use is compositional and based in systems of layers disconnected from their adjacent programs. Often the techniques of textile production are used only as a metaphor.

Thesis_Astrid Lipka • M.Arch_Year 3_Spring 2015

The program of this thesis is a textile campus; a space that allows for the research, manufacturing and selling of textiles and textile based technologies. This program is exists in the intersection between many disciplines, including architecture, interior design, design and technology and fashion. In an effort to bring together many disciplines in the Parsons/New School community, the site for this thesis will be the previous fashion building located in the fashion district in Manhattan on the corner of 40th street and 7th avenue. The recent sale and impending demolition afford the possibility for real experimentation. Using this existing structure, this thesis aims to maintain the school’s presence in this neighborhood as well as creating new spaces for interaction and discovery for students whose disciplines that rarely overlap.
