Set our priorities right Shine for the Lord in a secular world

G

od created man and "put him into the garden of Eden to till it and keep it" (Gen.2:15). God never intended man to remain idle. A blessed man shall eat the labour of his hands, will be happy and prosperous (Ps.128:2). Bible holds laziness in contempt and instructs such sluggard to learn from ants (Prov.6:6). A man who is not willing to work is not worthy to eat and is considered walking in a disorderly manner (2 Th. 3:10). But the fall of man brought drastic changes in working condition. God cursed the ground because of man and said, ....."in the sweat of thy face shall thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground" (Gen.3:19). As man progressed, revolutionary changes occurred in the work culture. Slavery prevailed for a long period. Industrial revolution, brought in multiple issues related to employee - employer relationship. Communism was the by-product of this labour crisis. As a result of Marxian philosophy, employees became more powerful than the employer. The fall of communism brought in new labour culture.

The above mentioned philosophy, brought about a new work culture in the corporate world, exploiting the resources in the best possible way. Today you are no more appointed for eight hours, but for 24*7 (a new term). Probably they may provide you with all what you need at the cost of your time and energy. You may not get time even to meet all your personal needs. No time for family, quiet time, prayer meetings and Bible studies, and some times even worship meetings. Today you may not realize the damage it can cause to your spiritual and personal life. A man had a good car but the accessories he desired were very expensive. He still wanted them. So he sold his car to buy the accessories. So also is one who behaves like Esau and sells his birthright to get a bowl of lintel.

(Gen.47:14,26). In modern terms we can call Joseph a 'workaholic'. He never did 'eye service' but he served his masters as unto the Lord. Finally what Egyptians rewarded him for his service. There arose a Pharaoh who knew not Joseph (Exo. 1:8). But sad to say, all this services were forgotten. Dear brethren the world will forget our services, but our Lord will never forget our services to Him (Heb.6:10). After working for your company, spending best of your vigor and time, for 30 - 35 years, have you ever felt to step into your office again after your retirement ? In case if you go, do you get the same warmth and welcome there? We read of another man in the Bible, who rose to the highest office in Babylon. Daniel, he too was fully committed to his work and boss. In the midst of his secular work he found time for God. He found time for prayer and quiet time. At the end of his life heaven addressed him, " O Daniel a man greatly Beloved". What a commendation from Heaven! We need to balance our secular and spiritual life, imbalance is dangerous. Beware when the world is trying to rob our time and energy. In fact there is no significant difference between secular and spiritual, all that matters is our priorities.

Joseph is a classical example of a man who was faithful in his work place. Wherever he worked, he was fully committed to his work and he took 'extra time' to satisfy his masters. He did the hard labour in Potiphar's house, with the keeper of the prisoner and also in the palace Modern liberalization and of Pharaoh. He was a God fearing globalization has tremendously man (The Lord was with Joseph), changed the work culture. The and he was a prosperous man worth of man has degenerated to (Gen.39:2-3,23). OF THE CROSS

- part 3

Roman Centurion at The Cross – Koshy Mathew

O

ne of the prime propellers of success of Roman Empire was it's well organized and disciplined military power. Soldiers were posted in every nook and corner of the country to ensure absolute security. Legion was the highest unit of the army (Mark.5:9). It consisted of 6000 to 10,000 soldiers and was further divided into six; around thousand each. The Officer in charge of such a unit of thousand was called as chili-arch or chief Captain (Acts.21:37). A chili arch or Chief Captain was in charge of 600 to 1000 soldiers and this unit was called Cohort or Band. When Pilate delivered Jesus Christ to be crucified, the whole Band or Cohort's soldiers came (Mat.27:27).Like wild dogs six hundred soldiers surrounded the most innocent man ever walked on the surface of the earth. That was the fulfillment of Psalm. 22:16. "For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have enclosed me". As it coincided with Jewish festival season, 4

additional army men were probably reinforced in Jerusalem. Our Saviour stood like a lamb in the midst of wild beasts. We see him like a ram caught in a thicket by its horns.(Gen.22:13). Bands were named after a place or a person. For instance, Cornelius the centurion was belonging to Italian band (Acts.10:1). Julius was belonging to Augustus band(Act.27:1).One band or Cohort was further divided into six centuries, each comprising of around 100 soldiers. Centurion had liberty to exercise power and authority bestowed upon him by the Roman Government. (Mat.8:89;Lk.7:1:-10). One century was further divided into ten sub units each comprising of eight to ten soldiers.

Centurions mentioned in New Testament Generally centurions were supposed to be tough and arrogant, but most of the centurions mentioned in the New Testament have been generous

and God fearing. The centurion in the city of Capernaum was a God fearing man. He loved the Jewish people and constructed a synagogue for them (Luke.7:5). He was concerned for the health of his servant and sought healing from the Lord (Mat.8:1-10). Cornelius of Italian band was another God fearing centurion mentioned in the New Testament (Acts 10:1-4). It was under the custody of Julius, a centurion of Augustus' band Paul was taken to Rome. It is mentioned that Julius courteously treated Paul and gave him liberty to go unto his friends to refresh himself. (Acts.27:3). The chief Captain and the centurions who arrested Paul at Jerusalem were also courteous to him (Acts 22:24-29; 23:17-24).

Soldiers and John the Baptist John the Baptist the fore runner of Christ was a fiery preacher and a revivalist. His messages about Messiah and the Kingdom of God caused great impact on all strata of society. Pharisees, Sadducees, scribes, tax collectors even

soldiers were moved by his sermons. He exhorted them, "kingdom of God is at hand and bring forth fruits befitting repentance" (Mat.3:7-8). When soldiers likewise came to John the Baptist seeking his counsel and asking, "what shall we do?". John the Baptist instructed them three things 1. Do violence to no man 2. Do not make any false accusation and 3. Be content with your wages. They violated all these three things And they never really repented. When Messiah came they treated him violently; he was the most innocent victim (Mat.27:27). They made false accusation against the disciples. "His disciples came by night and stole him away while we slept""this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day" (Mat.28:13,15). Even after two thousand years, Jews believe this concocted lie spoken by soldiers(of course tutored by chief priests). Biggest lie in the human history in return for the bribe they received! (Mat.28:1215). Moreover, they parted his raiment among them, and for his vesture they did cast lots. "These things, therefore the soldiers did." (John.19:24). They were not satisfied with their salary.

(Mat.27:37,39; John.19:19-20) Crucifixion was a Roman form of capital punishment, reserved for criminals. And it served as a ghastly warning to all those who did not have the Roman citizenship. The entire process of crucifixion was executed under the supervision of a well trained centurion. The centurion orders his soldiers to clear a semi- circle near the place where the cross had to be planted. Soldiers would then bind and nail the victim on to the cross and carry out everything with precision. Finally at the centurion's orders the cross was lowered into deep hole already dug in the rock.

Following are the highlights of his actions and utterance. 1. Centurion saw his death, it was unusual. He saw him giving up His spirit willingly. Mk.15:39 2. As a Centurion he need not fear anything, but the events associated with the death of Christ brought fear in him; the fear of God. He saw in the noontime sun became darkened, followed by earthquake and rocks started cracking. He was musing on the utterances of Christ. First and the last utterances challenged him most.

The Balancing Act Balancing spiritual principles for life in a demanding secular world

– Thomson B Thomas

P

racticing the principles given by the Lord for a Christian to live by has become challenging in a secular world with variant rules and values. When some wilt and give in others separate secular and spiritual to practice separate rules satiating their conscience. Yet for a person who is serious of his relationship with His Master and Lord cannot sacrifice his beliefs for temporary gains. He would represent the Master anywhere knowing his presence in the society, work place or otherwise, not as an accident but as ordained of the Lord. Pleasing the Master will be his only goal, anywhere at any cost.

secular and the sacred is to balance life in this age while keeping an eye on the age to come. A Christian is not left without directions to lead a spiritual life in his secular surrounding. It is his duty to draw wisdom from the Scripture and apply them in each situation.

sacrificing biblical, spiritual, principles.

1. Acknowledging the Lord's authority.

When Jesus Christ is the Lord of the time, relationships, and wealth of a Christian the demands of the world on these are also immense. For example, In daily living the demands of the 'time-robbers' are several these world- work, friends, days. For many leaving the office in time has become a matter of "..a young Christian the past. doing something always. But the 'workers' are those who do what is needed. When it is true that one should eat only if he works it is also important to remember that one should not eat only to work. A Christian must always remember that the time beyond his normal work-time doesn't belong to his employer. Those should be used for his personal and spiritual matters. Any regular demand on this time should be resisted even at the risk of being stamped noncompliant or idle (Exo. 5.17). It is also a matter of great concern to notice from many recent reports of personal abuses at work place that they occur mostly in extra hours of work, not in the normal times. This was also true of Joseph. The temptation to fall in sin came while he was at work. The Scripture alerts us saying that it was when there was no one around (Gen. 39.11). Joseph seems to have been a workaholic. If he had fled the temptation to work 'extra hours' he wouldn't have been in a situation where he had to pay dearly in fleeing from immorality!

2. Commitment to Biblical ethics at work.

should not be doing “eye service, as men pleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart” (Eph.6.6). Similarly submission and obedience is called for at work (v.5). Good fidelity is demanded (Tit. 2.9, 10). Here the proper use of time, stationeries in office are all included. Matters like receiving bribes, swindling money, sexual sins and the likes should be shunned. It was this sense of responsibility that helped Nehemiah and Mordecai in Shushan and Daniel in Babylon to be faithful in their labor in strange lands. They used their offices for the good of the people of God in their lifetimes. Obedience to human authorities should be rendered to the point beyond which it becomes disobedience to God's commands (Acts. 5.29). It is told of a young Christian hired by an elastic vendor as sales boy that when he was asked to stretch the elastic while measuring for customers, answered, 'Sir, your elastic is stretchable but my conscience is not'!

3. Withstanding temptations to compromise.

When corruption is pervading all The morals a Christian should levels of society a Christian keep in his secular life is laid should know that an error does down in the Scripture. In the not become right when it biblical times many were slaves becomes regular. These are days to well to do families (1 Cor.1.26- when one spends more time with 31). Paul says all our resisted at any cost. Paul says, works and words should be to the “Flee youthful lusts” (2 Tim.2.22). glory of God (1 Cor.10.31). Joseph fled from sin when he Everything should be done as could have, humanly speaking, unto the Lord (Eph.6.7). One gained much influence in higher

echelons of power in Egypt by falling for it. God honors such fidelity. Joseph lost his servants robe for his faithfulness. But God gave him a royal robe in return!

4. Have a yardstick for success that is different from that of the world. Many assumes standard for their lives looking at others' lives. Having a six digit salary, 3BHK flat, four wheeler, good admissions for children etc. are seen as symbols of success. The attempt is to keep ahead in status, than his peers. When these are important for those who have only the 'secular' before them as their goal, for a Christian what pleases his Master would be of utmost importance. God's will, divine glory, fulfillment of life, preparing a generation for God and fulfilling God-given duties determines the measure of success for him. These don't mean that one should live isolated in this world of sin but it means one must be insulated from the contaminations around. God expects his people to keep the spiritual principles in this age while at the same time having the legitimate enjoyment of all that God has prepared in the world for His own. While living in a world of diverse values and goals, to have a different value system based on the Word of God and to resist the temptation to compromise, one needs strength that comes from reverence and obedience to the Word of God. Only those who possess these can balance their spiritual life successfully – Thomson B Thomas is an evangelist, a Bible Teacher and preacher based in Mumbai.

BIBLE STUDY

Heaven and Hell – Richard Masih

W

e need to consider the biblical teaching on heaven and hell for four reasons:

1. it's very much missing from the modern day preaching. In the bygone eras there was much hell-fire preaching. 'Repent and believe or else you will go to hell' was an integral part of the evangelistic preaching. Now a days, not only hell is missing but also repentance is missing from our preaching. Now it is just believe. Repentance and turning away from sinful life is the part of genuine conversion 2. Reverence to God in His fear is a must for our everyday living. The Bible says to work out our salvation with fear and trembling (Phil.2:12). Very often 'fear and trembling' are missing because we forget hell. From time to time reminder is needed. 3. It is a must for our evangelistic efforts and soul winning. We cannot reach out to people with the love of God and the 8

“William Booth,... said that the best training that he can give to his workers is to send them to hell for twenty four hours.....When they will come back they will never be the same... in their approach to soul winning."

The prison chaplain was there walking by his side giving him the comfortable, soothing words from the Scripture. Finally the convict turned to him and asked, “Do you really believe that? If I believed, as you say you believe, I would crawl on the streets of London on my elbows on broken glass pieces and tell people the gospel.” I asked myself the same question. Do I really believe in heaven and hell? Then what am I doing to save people and win them for the Lord?

Hell 1. Hell is a 'place' of torment and agony or anguish (Luke 16:23, 24, 25, 28). 2. Hell is a 'place' of the lake of fire burning with sulfur (Rev.19:20; 20:10, 14, 15; 21:8). 3. Hell is a 'place' of conscious existence: a. The rich man could recognize Lazarus and Abraham (Luke 16:23). His mind was functioning effectively. b. The rich man could make two requests (Luke 16:24, 27). Both the requests were turned down. There is no answering of prayers in hell. c. The rich man could feel the burning flame and feel thirsty (Luke 16:24). His physical sensations were intact. d. The rich man could remember his five brothers on earth (Luke 16:28). His memory was working well. e. The rich man could reason with Abraham (Luke 16:30). His mental faculty was alert. 4. Hell is a 'place' of nontransference (Luke 16:26). Once gone there, there is no way out, no matter how much prayers are offered, rituals and ceremonies are conducted on behalf of the dead. After death there is no salvation, but only the judgment (Heb.9:27). 5. Hell is a 'place' of eternal punishment (Mt. 25:46). If the eternal life is eternal, then the eternal punishment is also eternal. There will be no respite in hell. 6. Hell is a 'place' of weeping and

gnashing of teeth (Mt.8:12; 13:42, 50; 24:51; 25:30; Luke 13:28). I am sure these will not only be the tears and gnashing of teeth of the relentless pain and burning sensation but also of regrets of lost opportunities. 7. Hell is a 'place' where its worms do not die (Mk.9:48; Isaiah 66:24). Think of the worms crawling all over the body, repulsive and frightful! 8. Hell is a 'place' of darkness (Mt.22:13). Darkness is depressive and distressful, may lead to mental, emotional and physical breakdown.

Remember them that had the rule over you, men that spake into you the word of God and considering the issue of their life, imitate their faith.(Heb.13:7). God has raised gifted men time to time. They all were the gift of God to His Church.(Eph.4:8-11).They all did their ministry according to the gifts which God had given to them. Therefore we need to thank God for the wonderful service they did among God's people for the blessings and the edification of the Church. Some had the gift to preach, teach, write books, tracts or hymns, etc. They used all their gifts for the building up of the Church of God. n our last issue we looked at the example of Christ in leadership. We shall now look at some areas in which husbands should exercise leadership in the family. As God has appointed man as the leader of the home, God holds him responsible for everything that happens in the family. He cannot escape by saying “I didn't do it or know it” nor can he blame his wife or children.

Husband is responsible for leading the family in worship, prayer and the study of God's Word. The first area is the spiritual realm. The husband being the head of the family is the priest and is responsible for the spiritual wellbeing of the members of his household. He is responsible for leading the family in worship, prayer and the

study of God's Word. He is also responsible to maintain a godly atmosphere within the home. He has to be a spiritual person himself to perform his duty in this area. It is obvious that we cannot be of help to someone if we ourselves are not spiritual. Otherwise it will be like “the blind leading the blind” (Mat.15:14). Unless the husband knows the truths and principles of God's word, he cannot teach or instruct others. Moreover he should be leading a godly life to lead others in to such a life. Only one who has given first place to God in his own life and spends

time with God and His word on a daily basis can lead his family spiritually. In speaking to Israel God demands: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength” before “teaching them diligently to your children”. It is also mentioned there, that this teaching has to take place all the time through their very life style. (Deut. 6:5-7). In order to clear the doubts of the wives as mentioned in 1 Cor.14:35, the husband has to be well versed in the things of God. It is the responsibility of the husband to sanctify their wives by the

The Spirit of God explains this truth as He talks about church leadership.“If a man does not know how to rule ('manage'Godly Christians have long NASV) his own house, how will he emphasized the importance of take care of the church of God?” regular, daily family worship (1 Tim. 3:5).This means that it is when all the members of the the husband's responsibility to family come together to praise see that everything is managed God, pray and read the Scriptures. well in his home, though he It is a great time to explain himself may not be doing biblical principles and their application in the lives of each member of the family. Conflict management Husband should take leadership to lead the family to the right church (Scriptural) and maintain fellowship and attendance there which is essential for spiritual growth. Another area where leadership of the husband is to be exercised is the arena of decision making. Decision-making is one of the most difficult aspects of the husband-wife relationship. While it is true that wives can be consulted and their opinion sought in making decisions, the right and responsibility of making the final decision rests with the husbands. God holds him responsible for the decisions made. In the garden of Eden Adam was questioned by God and held accountable for what happened there in connection with the sin committed. Instead of jumping into a quick decision, a family must pray over the matter and weigh the implications in the light of the Word of God. However, after this process the husband has to take a decision as the Lord directs him. Management of all family affairs is another area to be considered in leadership. This involves every area of a family. 12

is an essential aspect of a husband's leadership role.He should act as the peace-maker in the family everything. In order to do this, he should have full knowledge of all that goes on in his home. Planning of household activities, financial management etc. comes under the responsibility of the head. The husband is responsible for overall direction, vision, leadership, relationships of the family. He charts the course of their destination (in consultation with his wife). He who leads well can manage well. It is a serious matter to be the head of a household. He needs lot of divine wisdom to carry out his God given responsibility to direct, guide and manage the home. How encouraging it is to know that God has promised to give wisdom to those who ask for it. “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not: and it shall be given him” (James 1:5)

Conflict management is an essential aspect of a husband's leadership role. As human beings it is quite possible for conflicts to arise within a family with one's wife or children. Very often mishandling worsens the problem. It is not what happens, but how we handle them that matters. As the head of a family, husband should take the initiative to settle the problems that arise. He should act as the peace-maker in the family. God has shown us a very good example in this matter of reconciliation. Though God was right and we sinners were wrong, He took the initiative to come down in the person of Christ and reconcile us to himself. A true leader will always be willing to take the lead in settling conflicts. Husbands are exhorted to exercise leadership in bringing up children. God's instruction to raise children in a godly manner is directed to the fathers in Eph.6:4. “Ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.” Though mothers also have a responsibility to care for their children, fathers are the ones who are ultimately responsible here. They should see that their children are taught and trained in the proper way. The children that God trusted them to care for are their responsibility. The safety and well-being of their children is in their hands. May the Lord grant us grace that we may become the husbands and fathers that God has called us to be. – John Kurian is an evangelist, Bible teacher and preacher based in Kerala.

Relationships @ Workplace:

Timeless yet Timely Challenges! In this article author is trying to explore the employer - employee relationship in the light of God's word.

– Oommen Philip The Prelude Once a young boy went to survey the war but took initiative and got the nod of king to fight with enemy's chosen warrior and won and lead the army back with great victory. The whole nation erupted in jubilation and welcomed their hero with pomp and pageantry. As he marched the streets of the capital city, some of the girls in the community sang to felicitate him. They praised the victor and pictured his greatness to be ten times that of their king himself. This invited jealousy and wrath from the king and irritated him greatly. The king couldn't put up with the high acceptance the new commander found among his countrymen so pushed him down to lower rank. But the commander had the grace to willingly accept the demotion and worked in the lower rank with humility. The commander in this story is David who later replaced the king himself (1 Samuel 18:6-13). Bible characters like Daniel, the three Hebrew youth and Joseph also encountered such reprisals

at workplace, but they received abundant grace to handle the situations with humility. They exhibited their spiritually transformed personalities at the workplace and received acceptance from God. They never tried to seek after recognition from the world by surrendering their conscience as pawns to align with circumstances. We also find civil servants like Nehemiah placing the interest of God at the workplace above all and kept their testimony bright and powerful with humility and firmness. Biblical perspective of any relationship, exhibited by attitudes and corresponding actions at workplace or elsewhere, is bound by the extent of grace enjoyed by God's children. They never bother about winning earthly wars, but would be keen to exhibit faith and trust in God to rule and overrule their situations for His glory. The Bible assures of adequate grace to resolve conflicts at the workplace and to take conflicts beyond human level. Relationships are

multidimensional and as such complex and thus prone to conflicts. There are resultant ego clashes and covert or overt encounters which make situations counterproductive and make individuals disillusioned. Conflicts create undue stress in all who are directly and indirectly involved and make the work atmosphere cumbersome and cluttered. It leads to inefficiency and waste of resources. Workers lose their peace in such situations and will find it difficult to enjoy work atmosphere. But for all such puzzling scenarios, the Bible has answers to lead us to a satisfying work life.

Handling or getting subdued? Christians are invariably both employers and employees. Christian employers are executives in managerial cadre but are also employees in a general sense. But they are viewed as employers by their subordinates because they represent the owners or management. These Christian executives are bound to please their bosses by producing best

possible results with the cooperation and support of their subordinates, which would include unbelievers. Subordinates normally expect undue considerations and favours from bosses. When executives can not meet such expectations, workplace relations become sour. Such situations pose several practical and ethical questions which need to be addressed. Do the Christian employees have the responsibility to support, obey, pray and please the unbeliever boss? Are the demands and expectations of the Christian employees a reflection of their Biblical values? How would the Christian boss meet the challenging expectations of the subordinates who are unbelievers? How would the Christian boss handle Union tactics like strikes and work-torule? The Bible provides answers to such questions and demands total compliance (Ephesians 6:57). At the same time, these situations will have to be handled in its context with wisdom from God.

influence the work atmosphere to be one of mutual trust and support. When the atmosphere becomes less tense, people and organizations become more productive and lead to higher levels of performance and reduced cost. The Christian bosses and subordinates need to understand that they are called to exhibit Christ-likeness in actions and attitudes at the workplace and elsewhere (like home or church). It is true that heaven looks for spiritual behavior from the Christian at the workplace while the world looks for intellectual and emotional smartness. The devil is engaged for a battle in our minds so that we can fall into double life, one at workplace and a different one at religious and family circles. But this is resented by the Bible very strongly. We who are partakers of the divine nature and recipients of grace from God have no option to follow two masters at any time, but must acknowledge Jesus Christ as our sole Master in all spheres of our lives (Matthew 6:24). So our work behavior, as in other arenas of life, gives us the The Christian employer is opportunity to examine ourselves admonished by the Bible to avoid to determine to what extent we favouritism, bias and are controlled by the Spirit of God particularism of all sorts and and how much we excel in exhibit a spirit of friendliness and producing the fruit of the Spirit kindness rather than use tactics (Galatians 5:19-25). Such Paul admonishing Christian worldly tactics come from the employees and employers about flesh and are often a result of workplace relationships physical, emotional or immediately after speaking about organizational insecurity. behavior, he goes on to warn Christians about spiritual warfare and the need to pray for spiritual energy to fight (Ephesians 6:1018).This pattern of divine instruction is somewhat repeated when Paul wrote to Colossians as well (Chapter 3). These instructions demand total allegiance from us in our behavior at the workplace as much as in all other spheres of activity. In other words, we are to handle all challenges in our work relationships with the fullness of the Spirit and exhibit the fruit of the Spirit in all dealings with our bosses and subordinates. It includes all our words and body language (1 John 4:17b). Christ likeness might invite ridicule from our co-workers and lead to failures at the work situation when we use Christian values and motives in all our relationships. Yet we will be rewarded by our God for following the instructions in His Word that we ought to obey all authority at the work situation (Ephesians 6:7-8).

Handling Ungodly Demands Pressure to comply with ungodly instructions from the unbeliever boss can be highly intimidating and cause great concern. The believer's conscience is pricked when asked to compromise on quality, service, promotion and advertisement. The believer is often used as a channel or becomes a victim to nepotism, favouritism, corrupt practices, exaggeration, victimization and suppression of facts. If we stand for the truth and do not comply, it may affect our career prospects and even our job. But conceding to such acts is against the biblical

Be sure not to allow obstacles, whichever form they may be , to get in the way of God's precise opportunities for you. Now, let me jot down a few biblical solutions in dealing with personal stress: First of all, limit your focus to the concerns of the day. Jesus said, “Do not worry about tomorrow. For tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own” (Matthew 16

To conclude, instead of being cumbered by your problems which further accelerate your stress, the Bible recommends taking it 'all' ( which includes your stress ) to the Lord in prayer. This verse in Philippians offers the comforting promise that as we pray, our minds will be protected by a peace that goes beyond our ability to comprehend. “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus”. (Philippians 4:6-7). – Raju M. Relationships @ Workplace principles we hold. It is a greater challenge to communicate such convictions to the authorities. It is at this juncture that our hearts ought to dwell on fruit of the Spirit. Here we must stand firm and present our convictions with respect, humility and love and guard against the tendency to engage in covert or overt warfare with the boss or the organization in such circumstances, but show true Christian character. Daniel and the three Hebrew Youth stand out as prime example in the way they handled king's ungodly demands and politely and humbly stood their ground. They were driven by faith and trust in the Lord to look after their life and future while they stood strong in their faith. Ethical Issues @ Workplace The Christian employee should be above reproach in complying with rules and regulations and exhibit highest standards of work ethic. He should comply with punctuality and promptness to meet deadlines. He should desist from pilferage of all kind and should not have shadow warfare with the boss. He should desist from the use of employers' resources for personal purposes, like telephone, transport, computer and the like. We are not expected to make personal gains at the expense of the employer and make people say that we are made rich by our employer (Genesis 14:22-24).

Word not to ill-treat employees, underpay and mistreat them because these will invite the wrath of God (James 5:4; Colossians 4:1). We should not forget the fact that there is divine reward for genuine faithfulness and earning the trust of our employers (Ephesians 6:8). We must be diligent and faithful and leave our future with God who will not forsake us (Colossians 3:24).

A Challenge to Respond!

The Bible guarantees honour and respect for a servant who looks after the affairs of the employer diligently (Proverbs 27:18). Rejoice in the Lord – Sanjay Udaypure

T

he word “rejoice” means full of joy. It is a quality or attitude of delight and happiness. When we receive any gift then our heart gets filled with joy. More so, when we receive God in our hearts then our hearts are full of joy and happiness. The joy comes when someone experiences positive encounters. For example, when hearts are filled with peace people reach the stage of delight. The Greek word for rejoice is chairo which occurs eight times in the Book of Philippians. The Book of Philippians is known as the book of joy in the New Testament. Apostle Paul urges believers to be happy all the time. Paul was in fact in prison when he wrote to the believers to rejoice as they faced trouble in the church from false teachings. It is applicable to us too. We must comfort ourselves by rejoicing in the Lord. A person who rejoices in the Lord always, will not go off track. Our rejoicing will keep us in the will of God. Let us look at reasons for a Christian to rejoice every day. 20

Rejoice because God is with us We must rejoice everyday because God is always with us. He is the “Emmanuel” God who is always with His people. We must be happy and glad in Him. The Psalmist says; “I will be glad and rejoice in you” (Psa. 9:2). God's presence makes our hearts rejoice in Him. None can be happy without God in the heart. As His people, let us be happy with God's presence with us.

Rejoice because our Names are Written in Heaven The Word of God says; “Rejoice because our names are written in heaven” (Lk.10: 20b). Heaven is God's resting place. It is the most holy place. What a privilege to have our names written in heaven. Christians have a wonderful hope of entering into heaven. It is the place where everyone in Christ alone can enter after death. No one can enter without being born again (John 3:3). We must rejoice because God has written our

names in heaven. Share the Good News of Christ and bring many under the saving knowledge of God. Let us rejoice with others by making them taste the love of Christ and let the love of God rest in others lives too.

Rejoice because Christ gave us the Hope of His Second Advent The Word of God says; “Rejoice in the hope of the glory of God” (Rom.5: 2). Christians line with great expectation of His second coming. Christ's return is sure. However, we do not know when our expectation will get fulfilled. The word of God says; the gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come (Mt. 24:14). Though we may not know exact time of His return yet fulfillment of all events of God's salvation plan so far, assure us of His coming again also and of taking us to be with Him forever. This is the great assurance that God has given to His people through His Word, The Bible. Let us prepare

Whatever is not clear will be there for us to make new discoveries. If we are wrong in our understanding, we will get corrected. But for the present let us take as they are given in the Scripture, believe and rejoice. Let us escape the fires of hell ourselves and help others- our family members, loved ones, relatives, friends, colleagues, fellow students, church members, neighbors and acquaintances, etc.- by our witnessing to escape.

Working Woman: A Biblical Perspective – Julie Varghese Mathew

church (Ephesians 5:21-6:4). Our love for our families must be sacrificial, just as Christ's love is sacrificial. He left His throne and sacrificed His life for us and we better practise to emulate such humility and sacrifice in our homes. We are to submit to, exhort, and most importantly love one another (1 Corinthians 13, Ephesians 5:22, Hebrews 3:13).

This woman's motivation is important in that her business activities become the means to an end, not an end in themselves. She was providing for her family, not furthering her career, or working to keep up with the neighbors. Her employment was secondary to her true calling—the stewardship of her husband, children, and home.

Proverbs 31 goes on to describe the activities of the godly wife, If working outside which include purchasing the home causes a materials and food, buying woman to neglect property, planting a vineyard, and doing business. home should not be condemned and women who focus on the stewardship of the home should not be treated with condescension. Clearly there are women in the Bible who worked both inside and outside the home. To name a few, Deborah worked as a Judge in Israel (Judges 4,5), Anna worked in the Temple (Luke 2:36-38), Tabitha was a social worker who sewed clothes for the needy (Acts 9:36, 39), Phoebe was a deaconess and let's not forget Lydia the purple merchant and Priscilla the tent maker. And what about women who have children at home? Let us consider what Paul has to say on the subject. In Titus 2:3-5, he says, 'Older women likewise are to be reverent in their behavior, not malicious gossips, nor enslaved to much wine, teaching what is good, that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands, that the Word of God may not be dishonored'. The emphasis is on how women need to model themselves forgiving love to their children and to own husbands and for cultivating family culture for the glory of God and it does not seem to intend to prohibit women from working outside the home. This does neither suggest that it's a godly choice to work outside nor suggest staying at home mandatorily to become a godly mom. It is essential that a woman, as a mother understands her biblical responsibility before she decides to go out and work. The woman has to own responsibility for the things

pertaining to the house whether it's children, food or clothes. If, therefore, any part of the household gets neglected because of her outside work, then she would not be fulfilling her obligation as a wife and a mother. So, her responsibility as a wife and mother takes priority over any desire or need to have a job. But if a woman has to work pressurized by her husband and consequently the condition of the children- spiritually, mentally and physically-suffers, then the husband will be held responsible.(2 Cor 5:10). Many women today place too much emphasis on career and achievement outside the home. Young women need to be taught to develop primarily lofty and admirable aspiration of becoming a godly wife and mother. The woman who chooses to marry needs to submit herself to the Lord and to her husband in her role as "helper" to him.

heart, then you are neglecting the tasks for which you were primarily created by God. Why was woman created? According to Genesis 2:18, woman was created to be a helper to man. She should therefore fulfill her primary responsibility faithfully, with respect to their children, while the husband is at work. Another noteworthy factor in this case being that Scripturally, work is not optional for the husband (Genesis 3:19) and for the wife to support the family on her own while the husband is alive and able. She should guide the children and so assist husband with his job of teaching and training the children. The Bible nowhere forbids a woman from working outside the home.

Since God's Word does not prohibit women from working outside of home let us too stay with that. The bottom line is that each individual family needs a review keeping in view God's will for the family. God has set up the Each woman must therefore structure for the family, but His examine if working outside the detailed working plan may appear home is interfering with her different for each family, yet the responsibilities of a godly wife goal for all families is same. — to and mother or has come in the bring glory to the Lord. BIOGRAPHY

E. P. Varghese Faithful in the Heavenly Father's business – E J Paily Varghese and his brothers who were doing business at this place thought of leaving the place and seeking shelter at Parur a nearby town. In the mean time, due to the intervention of missionary J. M. Davies and others, the enemies of the Gospel became weak and the Lord blessed the believers including Bro. Varghese and their business flourished. Regular open air meetings were held in the local market twice a week and Bible classes were held regularly by Varghese and other believers.

The beginnings.... The lateBro. E.P. Varghese was born in a business family in the year 1897, at Angamally in Ernakulam District of Kerala state in South India. He was born of godly parents who were originally from a Syrian Orthodox (Jacobite) family. His house was adjacent to the eastern wall of the Jacobite church of Angamally. His father the late E.P.Paily was the Treasurer of the Jacobite church. Brother Varghese was closely associated with that church in his childhood. There were two paintings on the inside walls of the church. These were large pictures of heaven and hell. The picture of souls being tortured by Satan in hell troubled the heart of Bro. Varghese and created a fear of judgment to come. The parents accepted the Lord and separated from the denomination. The late Bro. T D Lonappan, an evangelist who was a pioneer worker at Angamally was instrumental in Bro. Varghese coming to the Lord. At the age of 16, Bro. Varghese accepted the Lord as his personal Saviour and from then onwards , he became a burning light to proclaim the Gospel in India and abroad .

Immersed in the Divine call‌. After being saved, he began to testify for the Lord in and around Angamally. Angamally was a predominantly Christian village in those days and there were 24

three ancient churches within a distance of two furlongs (about 400 meters). Bro. Varghese's ancestral house was in the midst of these churches. RomanCatholics were in majority in Angamally. The nominal Christians in the village in those days were largely drunkards and of unruly behaviour. Soon after Bro. Varghese accepted the Lord, severe persecution was let loose by the Roman Catholics under the leadership of the local priest. They wanted to kill Varghese, but the Lord wonderfully protected him. Bro. Lonappan and a few other brethren were beaten up A very strange persecution took place at Angamally which is unheard of in any other part of India. The dead body of the child of the evangelist Lonappan was exhumed from the cemetery overnight and kept in the compound of the House of evangelist Lonappan. Bro.

Keen student of the scripture‌. He studied the Bible in depth and he became an efficient preacher. He travelled extensively to different towns in the area known as Malabar. He preached alone continuously for a period of 23 days in special meetings held in Cannanore. This is an outstanding ministry which was not repeated anywhere else later. Many people came forward to accept the Lord. Bro. Varghese was an itinerant preacher, but he was also a good business man.As he had to travel all over India in connection with his business, and utilised such occasions for preaching the Gospel. He was a man of prayer and this accounted for his success in the ministry. Bro. Varghese had an opportunity to go to Pakistan in connection with his business and stay there for a few weeks and preach the Word.

Borders of ministry being enlarged…. A tragic incident took place in his life in 1939. He was a passenger in the train that met with an accident which is known as the Ayyalur disaster. This happened near Trichy around 12:35 am, i.e. in the dead of night. Bro. Varghese was thrown out of the compartment, but he landed safely under the great protection of the Almighty. As the survivor of the train accident, he received much publicity all over India. A Punjabi Christian lady who was the wife of Delhi Police Commissioner wanted to meet him.

sound edifying books. He taught in many of our Bible schools. He was a good agriculturist and had a large family of three sons and eight daughters. As a preacher and teacher of the word, Bro. Varghese was well known in Brethren circles in and out of India. Even in his old age, preaching of the Gospel was his great passion. His preaching was powerful and brought many to the Lord. He was a burning and shining light.

they do". He realised that he too was included in that prayer as the one who did it ignorantly. 6. As it was a festival day Jewish authorities sought special permission from Pilate to break the legs in order to hasten the death. They have to dispose of the bodies before that evening. In all probability, it was this centurion who prevented the breaking of legs of Jesus Christ. He heard his last prayer, "father, unto thy hands I commend my spirit" Luke23:46. Yet one of the soldiers in his arrogance pierced His side with a spear. Blood and water came out from his side; further confirming His death. (John.19:31-34) 7. Joseph of Arimathae sought permission to get the body of Christ, in order to bury Him. Pilate received the news of the death of Christ with a great astonishment and so he got it ascertained with the centurion. It was this centurion who issued the death certificate of Jesus Christ.(John.19:38; Mk.15:4445) In the last three series of articles we could see how the cross impacts the whole humanity. Words of Christ fulfilled on the day of crucifixion. " if I be lifted up from earth, will draw all men unto me" (John.12:32). A poor man, Simon of Cyrene a

POEM

Roman Centurion: Musings at the Cross Summary of poem: The Roman Centurion who led the crucifixion of Jesus at Golgotha was one of the stellar soldiers who was trained to do execution every single day. He was trained to be cruel. Yet that day as he crucified Jesus, this man testified “Truly this was the son of God.” …what made him accept that? why did he say that? was he saved by saying that? This poem is composition from the viewpoint of what the centurion would have felt. The Appointed Hour draws nigh Another day, Another execution So usual of my day, yet I never realised Today was like no other day “A day of darkness” yet “A day of Light” The Appointed Hour arriveth at the cross I saw him – first time their in courtroom Something within me stirred He was like no other So calm, So beautiful, So heavenly Why was he here? I ask! The crowds go berserk outside Straining my ears, I hear “Crucify Him” “A day of darkness” yet “A day of Light” The Appointed Hour arriveth at the cross Flogged, whipped was him Furrows made in his back Yet not a word of murmur nor regret I wonder standing afar off What manner of man was he ? “A day of darkness” yet “A day of Light” The Appointed Hour arriveth at the cross On the Hill we climb, he labouriously Laid we him on the cross, the man named Jesus I look into his beautiful eyes, I look into his beautiful face 26

More beautiful than all else Undescribable Joy, Mercy that is unpennable Shines forth from his face “A day of darkness” yet “A day of Light” The Appointed Hour arriveth at the cross As I beheld the crucified I hear him for the first time. “Father forgive them…..” My heart melts, spirit broken down. I wonder-Can he – Forgive me?? A man who had done so many executions I strain my ear to him as I hear his whisper “IT IS FINISHED” Could he be the Son of God? Wondered my heart! “A day of darkness” yet “A day of Light” The Appointed Hour had finally arrived at the cross Earth shook, Darkness engulfed My heart burnt in fear and shame Thunderous realisation struck me Crucified Jesus was truly the Son of God Heart metled, knees crumbled, Tears soaked my face, Testified I aloud!! “TRULY THIS WAS THE SON OF GOD” It was a day of darkness but now a day of Light Truly The Appointed Hour had come and passed ! – Godly Abraham

In Christ JORDAN C. KHAN

In this book, author Jordan C. Khan depicts the dividing line between the nominal and the real. He suggests a way to reality for all the races in Christianity.
