OVERVIEW

Thesis Statement By focusing on multigenerational communities, the community health and wellness center aims to integrate universal design for the diverse population by welcoming inclusiveness and connectivity in the facility. The use of wayfinding and lighting techniques will provide support and guidance through the different levels of the facility enhancing the experience of a sustainable lifestyle.

Problem Statement This three-story, 52,377 square foot Outpatient Rehab Facility in Singapore with a focus on material health related to sustainability. Addressing the old-age support and the multigenerational communities in Singapore, the center will meet the various needs of the diverse community. To provide support for a diverse demographic, the facility provides a wellness center on the entry-level to and health facilities on the upper two levels for privacy. A focus on material health will correlate with the health benefits the facility provides to Singapore residents. By promoting WELL and LEED guidelines in the design, the facility will promote wellbeing, and longevity to the multigenerational communities.

Concept Development Concept Statement Shaped by the surrounding natural landscapes, the site is located in the central region of Singapore in Rochor, the Outpatient Rehabilitation Center is at the crossroads of public transportation throughout all of Singapore. Inspired by the cultural icon of the “City of Nature”, the historic influences and sustainable intentions of the Singapore environment, economy, and wellbeing guide the newly designed Outpatient Rehabilitation Center, which aims to create a serene gathering place for multigenerational communities and healthcare teams. Upon entering the space, natural elements found within Singapore, such as stone and wooden elements, will contrast with each other providing a tranquil environment. The first level focuses on the community where gathering and learning opportunities stand. The second level focuses on the physical health aspect found in nature of climbing upward. The third level speaks to the openness of the hilltop where mental health will be provided. Providing clarity of wayfinding along main and secondary pathways keeps in touch with the trails in nature. The different levels and contrasts through the use of colors, textures, and surfaces allow the space to function for a variety of users creating a serene treatment space while using natural, sustainable resources.

Branding

Entry Lounge Perspective The subtle curve that is evenly divided on the central axis acts as a notion to the balance of nature vs structure and the fostered connection of old to new. With multigenerational communities as the client, the focus was to have easy wayfinding for all age groups and encompass areas of activities for collaboration as well as individual spaces to promote user choice.

Wayfinding

Partial Section Scale: 1/8”=1’-0” Integrated Wayfinding With almost all Singapore citizens owning a smartphone, integrated signage in hotspots (located at the ends of main hallways) allow users to select their destination and guide them through the building. The system works by scanning the icon on the wall with the smartphone camera, which leads to a website that opens options to destinations to select guidance in the building. After choosing the location, the smartphone generates a map with the shortest path of travel, making directions easy for new and returning patients and visitors. The arrows are yellow as it symbolizes support in the Singapore culture.
