design statement I am originally from a small county bordering Cleveland, Ohio, which made me familiar with a mix of lifestyles and cultures. As a child, I became active in my school and the community through different leadership programs and volunteer work. Through giving back to the community, I was able to work on a range of art features that kept with the community traditions and history. Since attending college, I have volunteered at the local animal shelter for adoption events. Also, I am the fundraising chair in the Interior Design program through IDEAS (Interior Designers for Education and Sustainability) and a student member of ASID (American Society of Interior Designers). I am currently studying Interior Design as a 4th year undergraduate at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. I have learned valuable skills to guide my passion for design through research and the design process during my academic pursuits. I understand the design precedents needed through analyzing research (codes and case studies), 3D programming, and presentation skills. I have also gained insight from my internship on material selections, ordering, and preparing for client presentations and meetings. Throughout my education and internship experiences, I have created design intents through individual and team-based practices. I managed to put myself through 4-years at Virginia Tech with help from the Veteran Affairs benefits and by working 40 hour weeks at the campus dining hall on top of being a full-time student. I plan to further my education by focusing on sustainable practices involved with the environment and design to help individuals reduce the amount of waste, materials, and energy. Through experiences and my passion for design, I intend to improve the quality of interaction and connection between people and spaces while creating valuable interior environments that foster the spatial design focus of wellness, sustainability, and inclusion.

Individual Project | 7 weeks Nordlingaholt, Reykjavik, Iceland Outside Iceland’s capital, Nordlingaholt is hugged by the surrounding nature of wildlife preservations and bodies of water shaped by the base of a mountain range. The suburbs celebrates connectivity through the organic curves that were shaped by the surroundings to form a central circle for the community. Focusing on wellbeing and sustainability, the site location for the Holistic Spa takes in the atmosphere and culture of its country’s use of geothermal sourcing. 7
CONCEPT Shaped by the surrounding mountains, woodlands, and bodies of water, the site is located outside of Iceland’s capital in Nordlingaholt. Inspired by the local icons, the thermal springs, the newly designed Holistic Spa Mist aims to create a tranquil healing place for multiple sclerosis patients and guiding teams. MIST stands for multiple sclerosis therapy while paying homage to the site where hot steam from the volcanoes and thermal springs create a mist through the environment for a feeling of relaxation for the unknown of what is ahead. Upon entering the space, a soft curve leads backward revealing multiple options of travel along the additional structured paths, seamless plush facade, and veining routes to the secluded zones. At the intersection of all the paths lies a mystical sheath over a soothing water feature edged with a smooth grain-stone. The dark stone contrasts with the light airy steam and cooler levels of beige and clay on the outskirt build-up to highlight the pops of vibrant blue, green and red tones in the central areas. The different levels and contrasts through the use of overlapping colors, textures, and surfaces allow the space to function for a variety of users creating a tranquil treatment space while using natural, sustainable resources. LIGHTING TECHNIQUES
FEATURE ELEMENTS
To reduce the pressure and stress on the eyes all lighting fixtures are suppressed by cove, indirect or transparent coverage. Through multiple sclerosis research, vision and cognitive issues are often common symptoms. Adhering to these difficulties the lighting is used as a wayfinding tool on the floor and ceiling planes with linear light. The wall sconces help identify rooms addressing the cognitive challenges.

Individual Project | 2 weeks Downtown Richmond, Virginia ASK is a childhood cancer foundation in Richmond, Virginia that provides support to families who have a child battling cancer. Over my summer e-xperience with Baskervill, we were tasked with an individual project guided by a team in the healthcare studio to enhance the experience of support, guidance, and reflection ASK has to offer. Following the mission of the North Star goal, the facility was inspired by the concept behind following the north star. 15
CONCEPT The renovation for ASK, a non-profit Childhood Cancer Foundation, promotes wellbeing, connectivity, and support through the newly inspired design proposal focused on the guidance and journey of light from the north star. FLOOR PLAN 01. 02. 03. 04.

Group Project | 5 weeks Downtown Roanoke, Virginia For the pod project, working with a second-year architecture student better developed the spatial interpretation perceived within the pod-- and the pod within a space. The initial pod by the integrated group project was transformed by reducing the scale and creating soft edges into the lotus sleeping pod that was developed with Lauren Pittas, a fellow Interior Design student. I primarily contributed through the pod configuration and the space planning aspect within the homeless shelter and translating the concept into the perspectives through Photoshop editing of the images to better engage the lotus effect within the space. 19
CONCEPT Revival is a Homeless Shelter and Basic Needs Day Center in Roanoke, Virginia. Inspired by the simplicity and transformation found in the lotus flower, the spatial intention was to create a soothing lower level and a more active first level that corresponds with the lotus transformation-- the rising day and sinking back into the water at night. With the intent of fostering the lotus effect, the spatial zones connect by an inner circular path that creates a smooth transition to various levels and passageways. Like the lotus, Revival supports the connection between individuality and community in everyday growth and resilience while promoting wellbeing, sustainability, and inclusion.

SPACE ANALYSIS The oval center area was inspired by lotus petals which helped with the circulation of the space and created a smooth transition from upstairs to downstairs. The space is flexible for a variation of users and preferences with the overall contemporary style being cohesive throughout to foster the connection of individuality and community.

2020 IDEC Student Design Competition National Honorable Mention
Group Project | 3 weeks Downtown Roanoke, Virginia The 2020 IDEC Student Competition was for a veteran living community center where we were prompted to design the public common space that would act as a community street in connection with the out-of-contract living areas. Along with fellow Interior Design students, Leigh Ann Williams and Heather Lodge, our design placed Honorable Mention in the competition with Hero Park: Living United. I primarily contributed through the research with the veteran and director of nursing along with space planning from information gained through the insights from the interviews and the connection to the layout of Elmwood Park. 25
CONCEPT The design for Hero Park: Living United brings the elements of Elmwood Park indoors, creating an urban street interior that focuses on promoting social sustainability and community as a means of support as veterans live and grow post service. In paying homage to the site’s location, the font and design elements focus on the Industrial Art Deco style found in the 1920s historical building. The Veteran Community Center Hero Park: Living United was a team designed task focusing on implementing a safe, inviting environment for all branches of military veterans to connect with providing for post-service concerns limited within the space. After communicating with a Navy veteran and a Director of Nursing, our team focused our design intent around open sight-lines, community connection, and wellbeing within the entire site. By incorporating elements found in the Roanoke Community, Hero Park- inspired by the different pathways found in Elmwood Park- connects parts to the whole and allows for user choice that joins people to each other, nature, and creative expression.

INTERIOR NEIGHBORHOOD
Perspective by Heather Lodge
Spatially, the central focus is the circular path that provides opportunities for resident connection, an indoor track for wellbeing that transitions into an outdoor art walk, and a farmers market that brings the social sustainability focus to life. The central community areas are surrounded by two-story facades that was designed with a ground-level stoop for residents who prefer interaction as well as containing a second-floor private balcony for those who want more privacy.
Interior Elevation by Leigh Ann Williams NTS 28
FARMER’S MARKET Within Roanoke, the downtown area has a farmer’s market that was translated into supporting different branches and cultures of the veteran community market. GYM While we have provided a central path to encourage well being and exercise, we also provided a gym for a space to get back on track after their time post-service.
